Somehow I have removed all the shortcuts from my programs folder, i.e. they no longer show up when i press start, all i get is
Today
Programs
Settings
If I go into programs all i see is the games folder
I can still run the programs from their defualt folders.
Anyone know a quick way to reinstall all these shortcutS or am I going to have to do them all manually ?
Not sure i even know what files types (shortcuts) or where they should be.
I am assuming they should be in /windows/programs as it is nothing there ?
Help
Cheers, Numb
re
OK sorry for wasting yer time, admins remove or delete as you feel fit.
For the record though, not that anyone is likely to ever do this but....
This is how I believe I caused the problem
It started when I was trying to load an irc app on my phone.
I needed to put the app in /windows/startmenu and run from there
I copied across from my desktop
Using resco explorer I went into /windows/startmenu but it wasn't there.
So foolishly i started playing around and somehow in properties decided to untick/tick the hidden box for attributes
The result was that all files in /start menu/program folder were hidden
So by changing it back (somehow!!) through the properties, attributes, it's now all back.
So if your still reading this (fools) sorry, user error on a big scale.
Cheers, Numb
I am receiving the current message on my hd2 and would like to know how i can repair the problem as it keeps popping up on the screen all the time
'Storage memory is critically low. If the storage memory is not increased, other programs may not be able to start. Use File Explorer to delete files that are no longer needed or move some files to a storage card'
Any advice please?
Simple advice- you've got too much installed or saved to internal memory rather than the storage card.
Common culprits are browser caches for PIE and Opera, the HTC Album cache, media files like videos, music and pictures etc.
Use File Explorer to look in all the sub folders of My Documents as a starting point. Try moving all the big files over the the storage card.
Download Treeview from Microsoft Marketplace- it's free and can show you where all the storage memory is going.
should i do this through the phone direct or the pc?

You can do either- as long as you connect using ActiveSync rather than Disk Drive mode.
Using the PC is probably a slightly easier experience as Windows Explorer is more informative than the mobile version!

to be honest, i did not think i will have to go through all this, i thought that the phone would have been more simple to use rather than the link suggested, install this and edit that, i would have thought that the phone would already be setup correctly, instead my phone has become another job itself!

You don't have to do all that. It works great out of the box as well. Those are just possibilities, to customize it and tweak it.
Uninstall everything you have installed on your phone and reinstall it to the storage card. Always install applications to the storage card. That should fix your 'problem'.
Additionally, open the File Explorer, go to \Windows and delete the folder YouTube. That gives you additional free space but the folder comes back when you watch YouTube videos, so you can do this from time to time.
can i drag and drop my applications folder into the storage card via the pc?
Yes, but then the links in the start menu won't work anymore. Think of what happens when you move the Program Files folder on your PC. It's the same here.
can someone give me a step by step guide for doing this task please.
Go to Settings, Manage Applications, Uninstall Applications. There, uninstall all the applications you have installed to teh main memory.
Then reinstall them, this time to the storage card.
And delete the YouTube cache from time to time.
When we're speaking of free storage memory, how much memory do you all have free?
Mine is around 20 mb, is it to small?
Beacuse when i watched a video on youtube i got the same message as in the first post.

As I suggested in the earlier post, this is nothing to do with installed programs- most of those are pretty small and are unlikely to be grabbing the majority of your memory.
It is most likely that you have allowed some large files to be stored in the main memory. By default the phone DOES store most big user files like photos and videos on a storage card, but perhaps that has been altered somewhere?
You need to use a file finding utility to sort this- if Treesize is not available in your locality via Marketplace (or you can't access Marketplace) then you can try Spacefinder, a tiny, free program that will sort your files and folders in order of size, giving a hint as to where the memory may have gone. You can also download Treesize Mobile direct from Jam Software
Stuff like CleanRAM, SKTools etc is OK for clearing RAM but has no effect on Storage Memory apart from clearing some caches, though this can help a lot.
One other tip- as has been suggested, try and install programs onto a storage card, but not if they are system programs like Today plug-ins or keyboards etc. These must go into device memory otherwise you may get some startup errors.
This baffles me. I have just got an HD2 to replace my HD - I started to put exactly the same programs onto the HD2 as I had previously installed on my HD (I install all programs on the device). I got the low memory warning long before I put all the programmes on - on a brand new device with no internet browsing/video/music on device itself.
My HD has more memory than my HD2 - how is that possible?
None of these explanations seem to explain how this happens on my HD2 but not my old HD. I have NEVER had a low memory warning on my HD despite having used it for over a year and having installed more on it than I have managed on the HD2.
I have recently found the pre-installed Google Maps created a cache folder in device memory and pumped it up to 25 Megs. Deleted it of course.

The HD2 has more memory (ROM) but a huge chunk (150MB) is taken up by all the HTC Sense gubbins, leaving a relatively smaller amount free to the user. Ultra light cooked ROMs give about 150MB more ROM, and light ROMs about 100MB more than the default ROM.
It also seems that a lot of caching is going on- Album, Googlemaps, Browsers etc eating up ROM.
Get this error the other day, and again last night! Says that I was running low on Memory, and wouldn't let me load the YouTube app! Then Last night as I was using Opera, it gave the same error....
So, did some searching throught the File Explorer, and noticed the YouTube folder was rammed with tiny JPEG images....
I plugged the device up to the laptop, and thouht it'd be easier to deleted files this way as you can highlight and then hit delete!
However, it wouldn't show the "Windows" folders. Even when I changed the properties to show all hidden files and folders....
So, a couple of questions....
How do I access the Windows folder on my HTC via my Laptop? How do I stop YouTube, Opera etc storing all these files and clogging up the memory?
TIA,
Mat

Why don't u try Resco Explorer.
Menu--Edit--Multiselection Mode. It will go to the multi selection mode. Then,
Menu--Select All. Then, You just Uncheck those that is not JPEG Files. Delete.
Well, That's one of the ways....
you can access the windows folder on your device by selecting "active Sync" when you connect the phone to your PC.. then just use windows Explorer from your PC..
need to un tick "hide system files" as well as show hidden.

Hi again guys..... Noticed again last night that the device memory is running low....
I managed to connect to the laptop, and show all hidden files and folders... I deleted all Opera Temp files etc, and YouTube files and that only gave me about 30Mb back. Noticed I have several hundred manilla files within the windows folder.... IIRC, they are a combination of numbers follwed by _manilla (ie, 123456_manilla). Not sure on the file type. I highlighted all these and they only came to a few Mb......
Not sure where all the files are being stored, and what is "clogging up" my memory? Maybe browsing on Opera, is causing it. But AFAIK, I deleted all possible temp files etc.....
All I do on the phone is ring and text (obviously), check emails, and browse on Opera. Now and then I may use YouTube, and very rarely use the Facebook app....
Not sure what files I am ok to delete. I don't want to deleting something, and cause a problem later on!
Any suggestions on what to check?
TIA

well here are the basic windows folders that you can clear out.
Windows/app data/volatile
Windows/cookies
windows/history
Windows/temp internet files
windows/temp.
also these folders may be repeated in the windows/profiles/guest folder.
temp folder in root
all those manila files, that actually "is" manila.they're the various scripts codes and layout files.

found a guest folder, not much in there.... also have to delete one file at a time. If I try to delete multiple files it says I don't have permission (or summat like that)... But if i do one file at a time, then the folder, it lets me...........
still stuck, and only have about 12.4Mb on Device Memory left!
also just deleted the cache folder within the Opera folder.... That free-ed up all of 5Mb!!!!!!!
then all I can suggest is running searches for files larger than..... well, start at 500k and see what turns up.
make sure whatever file manager you use is showing everything.
am i the only one getting mad problems trying to use both together? i ll have opera 10 open and minimized and ill try to run the camera and it will fail to initialize alot, sometimes just fail to initialize, sometimes it says not enough memory, but opera 10 will be the only other app running...
anyone else have this happening to them
I have this problem too. I think this is a known issue and there are no fixes as far as I can tell. you just have to kill opera 10 before starting camera or just use opera 9.7.
I used to have this problem
I used to have this problem but I removed most of the startup programs along with the \program files\selfservice (just renamed to stop.selfservice) programs and I can run everything at the same time. I even removed the bluet hoot service app in the startup but you can opened via shortcut.

connect to your PC with activesync, then use your PC to navigate to my device\windows\startup on the phone.
you know I just tried opening opera and camera and it's fine. perhaps it's working with the leo cpu patch now.
Just to follow up
My phone has been on 3 days without rebooting and I haven't close at all Opera 10. I have 26 processes running including 10 apps running. I think I solved the problem on my phone, not a single mem error.
So the problem was either in the startup apps or the selfservice apps.
By the way I don't use sense, i use SPB MS and s2u2, the phone feels fast very fast even with all that load?(only 179mb RAM free).

So, I have connected my phone using activesync, and every time i open the files on my phone, the windows directory is no where to be found. Why is this? I can find the windows directory just fine when using file explorer on my phone. But not via my computer.

Did you try to unhide the folders on Windows explorer>tools>folder options> check "Show hidden files and folders" remember not to delete the files in the startup folder just move them, maybe you'll need them if something doesnt work well specially BThoot.
Do you open it and choose to connect as active sync on the phone or disk drive? I think when I choose to connect as disk drive, then only the storage card shows up and not the on device storage.

As active sync, and yes that's correct you can't see the phone storage when accessing it in disk drive mode.
The items in the startup folder are mostly just .lnk files, which are links to the executables in the \windows folder...so as long as you can find those again if ever needed, then it's safe to just delete anything in there with a .lnk extension.

to the guy with his phone on for 3 days without reboot, what did you delete or mod to gain that kind of stability. I have the tmous update, but there is a cpu update too???

My set up>
T mobile HD2 latest ROM(how ever I was ok using old ROM).
SPB mobile shell 3.5.5 (Sense theme)
S2U2
Arkswitch
In My startup programs(windows/startup)>
arkswitch
ilock2
lumosstarter
spbmobileshell
everything else I moved to
windows/startup2 (or anywhere)
there is an app called BTtrayCE, this enables the bluethoot, so if i want to enable bluethoot i press a shortcut that i made to that app, then i turn bluethoot, probably is ok to leave bttrayCE but anyway i dont use it.
then i renamed the folder
program files/Selfservice to program files/stopselfservice
in this folder there is a lot of trash from t mobile that starts when you turn on the phone.
I think one of my main advantages is SPB ms, really, it disables all that sense stuff that crashes the phone (in my opinion), you can get better performance by using titanium but, it is not too productive.
I'm attaching some pictures of my phone. it is running since morning (it died because of battery) the last screen shot i posted before
Again no problems with the performance at all battery last for 1.5 days but i dont have data plan, just wifi 21 hrs a day.
Hope it helpsss

Awesome Roberto, thank you! I haven't gone in to clean out my startup group yet, but according to what you're showing even the few things that are in there now can go...although I might just put bttray back in there since I use BT all the time.
Also, oddly enough, I don't have the program files/selfservice folder you mention...maybe it's new in the 2.13 ROM...?
They came on 2.13

Actually yes I think they came with the new 2.13 ROM. For some reason with those files running I wasn't able to open more than 5 apps at the same time - they were autoclosing-, i think that's t mo's solution for stability in the HD2.
alright so i deleted some things, and i thinkk i may have messed something up.

could someone send me their startup folder shortcuts so i can compare what you have in there?

Hi again,
I`m new to android and have now got my Wildfire rooted and running the latest Wilpuzzle rom.I`ve also got live wallpapers running, got overclocking running and even Angry Birds so thanks to everyone for the help and advice on these forums.
The last little thing that is now got me is can you permanantly delete trash. As I`ve been playing around I have quite often put things on the screen then wanted to get rid of the icon etc.
So I do a long press and the trash icon appears in the notification bar at the top then I just drag the item to the bin and it`s gone.Over the past couple of weeks I`ve done this loads of times. My question is- Is there a permanent delete option like on Windows or is it permanently deleted each time I drag it to the trash?
If the permanent delete option is there where is it?
Thanks again
you can remove the app by downloading apps like easy uninstaller or uninstaller from the market.
or you can uninstall them from menu - settings - apps - manage apps... etc
or if you're using launcher pro, open app drawer, long press an app and drag it over the trash can until it says drop to uninstall, or something like that.
For the built in widget's, I dont think there is a permanent delete option. But, for 3rd party apps, you can simply uninstall the app itself.
you can also delete any folders that have been created by discarded apps using a file explorer
Thanks for the replys,
I have a file explorer and also know how to uninstall unwanted apps, but what I want to know is,when you drop something in the trash can, is it automatically permanently deleted or is it like Windows trash can where the files or whatever are dropped into sit with the option to permanently delete or restore.
If it is where do I find it on the system to find the recently deleted files/apps etc?
It (The widget) is just removed from the home screen, that's it. Its not uninstalled or removed or anything. (Unless you use LauncherPro/ADW's Uninstall Feature from the Trash Can).
Widgets are basically "functioning" shortcuts like the shortcuts on your Windows Desktop (Eg: Windows Vista/7 Clock, Calendar Widget etc), and, the same effect occurs when you remove a widget as is the case with removing a windows shortcut, i.e., only the shortcut gets removed. The app remains untouched. You can add it later as and when desired.
Lastly, there is no concept of Recycle Bin in Android as far as I know to view recently deleted apps / files etc.
Lastly, there is no concept of Recycle Bin in Android as far as I know to view recently deleted apps / files etc.
Thanks 3xeno thats exactly what I wanted to know.
