Day 1
Dear Diary,
I was so excited to receive my very first WinMo phone yesterday from Vodafone UK. I have been using Symbian OS phones before, and where they did the job, I found myself needing more from a device to fiddle with, and also to help with my new business I have set up.
I gave explicit instructions to my girlfriend to plug it into the mains so it’s all charged up ready from work.
5:30pm came and a rush back home to start playing with my new toy!
Well, firstly what an amazing looking phone. The feel of the phone it one of the best I have had, and I fell in love with it as soon as I picked it.
When I first started to use it though, I found myself over whelmed with the functionality and knew then I would have to change my mind set in more ways than 1.
I got straight onto xda to download all the neat extras that the people of this forum and others have contributed. I added the Manila cab file, TF3D panel installer, facebook panel and the SPB mobile shell.
At first I had to get my head round the panels idea. Once I did, what a really good feature. But I then noticed funny things going on. Contacts that I added were not being shown, I had to added them manually again, using the list of contacts within WinMo. I really thought that the contacts in Manila and SPB would of mirrored what was in the WinMo contact registry.
Being a noob with WinMo I started to panic trying to do the simple tasked that I took for granted with all my other previous phones.
Trying to send a txt was making me feel as if I have made a bad mistake. The whole process is so long winded. Too many menus and options to go through to finally type a text message in.
I then started to notice the reception. What reception! I thought something might have gone wrong, but after a couple of seconds waving it in the air, I finally got reception – 2 bars. 2 BARS! What the heck, my N95 gave me full reception. What’s going on here I thought. I also found it very temperamental, fluctuating greatly for no reason at all.
When I decided to retire to bed (at 1:30am!) I came across my final niggle. Setting the alarm! What a nightmare. Once again I had to go through the maze of options to be presented with a menu to setup an alarm. This was fiddly to say the least. The interface is so small I had to use the stylus to create an alarm which in my eye is even more an inconvenience.
I do like the phone, and I am hoping it is just me having to change my mindset. Doing the everyday tasks is a real pain in the bum, but then I am sure there will be easier ways of doing the things I want, as I have noticed that there is more than 1 way of doing things.
My only concern is the reception, and I will be keeping a close eye on this, and I feel this might be the reason I will have to send it back – No point in having an all singing all dancing phone with no reception!
Day 2
Dear Diary
Well, after some persistence the phones way of working is really starting to grow on me. I have spent more time adding contacts in to WinMo, which i can say is a pain, but once the information is there the phone really starts to shine.
I worked out that reason why TF3D and SPB don't sync with WinMo's contact is that what they actually offer is technically speed dials (Should of realised that when it says favorites - Doh!). All i do it select my most used contacts from WinMo, and with the addons (especially TF3D) it shows the contact in its full glory. And if i need a number not in there i just go straight to WinMo contact with a single click!
I updated the dialer to the Touch HD one, and WOW, so much better than the standard one. All i need now is more people to ring me so i can get to use all the features on offer
I also added the Touch HD keyboard, not a must because of the hard keyboard, but still better than the WinMo keyboard.
I am still getting used to the setup, but judging by how i am progressing so far with the phone, i feel it will only be a matter of time before i get totally used to it.
The reception is still worrying me tho. So i decided to do some tests. I drove home last night from work (16 miles) constantly checking the signal, and what i noticed surprised me a bit. I had signal all the way home, where with my N95 there were a few placed that i didn't.
This meant 2 things to me, either the phone didn't update the signal icon as much as the X1 over the N95, or the signal bars that show the strength were deceptive.
Ummmm food for thought. I just need to go to a place i know i defiantly do not get signal and do some tests there.
So, over all, it starting to be a good experience and i am starting to get to the nitty gritty of the device. Some one on here did say something that has stuck in my mind. "Phones are trying to be like PDA's and PDA's are trying to be phones". Having this angle getting an X1, going from the N95, has made me realise that i should stop trying to use it like a normal phone.
Tomorrow, i am going to try and sync it with outlook and others - I'm hoping that's when the confusion stops, and the fun begins!
Day 3/4
Well over the weekend I didn't have time to sync it to outlook (yet!), but I have managed to work out text messaging. It’s so easy to do now. Where i was going wrong was I was not used to the style. It's pretty much like MSN chat client where it always displays the history of message sent. What I was doing was replying manually and had to add the recipient etc. All I had to do was reply straight on the screen showing the message. Told you I was a total noob to all this!
I am noticing my attitude to the phone. Every time i am holding it I am being so careful. Careful not to scratch it, careful not to drop it, careful not to slide the keyboard out to hard, careful not press to hard on the screen - you get the idea. Every time I put it in my pocket making sure I don't have anything else in my pocket. So I am going to have to buy some sort of protection, lucky there's a nice section on xda to guide me on what’s best
hello sir.chunk
Oddly enough, unless I am mistaken, you wouldn't be the first person to say how much trouble they were having with this phone on the Vodaphone UK network
---------------------
I remember when i went from a BB 7280 to a Palm Treo 600 (and before that the Pregnant-Retard Nokia 3600 (3650))...i initially hated it at first, but then the PalmOS grew on me. Afterwards I went to the Treo 650 when it was launched, and then in October 2005 I went ahead and got a HTC Wizard. I returned that sucker right away (I admit i didnt give it a fair chance), but finally in May 2006 I went and got a HTC Prophet. Once again I hated it, however I refused to go back to my Treo 650 (mainly cause of the stability issue). I gave it a fair chance, and when I found programs upon programs for Windows Mobile (i already knew they existed but more so now), I was hooked.
The trick with Windows Mobile devices, coming from another area (for example S60) is to be patient.
Many people who give up quickly really lack the patience to learn the device. They expect to pick it up, and go go go...convergent devices, although convergent, are not regular cell phones, and while Series 60 is a smartphone platform, it sill has a strong "phone" feeling to it.
Patience develops into skill, and then skill develops into power. I don't think you will have problems with functionality, but I agree, if reception is lacking or non-existant, whats the point...after all it is a cell phone first!
Anyways that was my random spiel...don' t know how it will help, but i thought I would add it anyways
Cheers!
Its a nightmare, i consitantly looking at the reception and it's never the same.
I have never had a problem like this before.
As we speak i am at work, in a town with 3G access, that i know my previous phones have had full bars, but i have no reception, but i know 5mins ago i have 2 bars
Its very annoying as the more i use this phone the better it is getting!
But what use it a phone with out reception

One thing though, Nokia products...my god are fantastic with reception and reception strength. If I am not mistaken the N95 set the bar for network strength.
I agree, what good is a device (a phone sorry) if it can't get any reception....I really hope things improve.
I can confirm that (HTC) Windows Mobile products in general are cack when it comes to reception, and the X1, being made from the same stock, isn't any different.
I work in what amounts to a bunker and the signal strength in my place is so weak I'm considering switching operators (do you hear, StarHub?) and the position of my desk is such that I have to place the phone at the very edge of it to get a proper signal.
I've had a lot of phones in 2 years, and every HTC since the first generation Touch occasionally misses calls or SMSes, even when the signal indicator shows one bar. Even the Blackstone (Touch HD) I tested a week ago (not on sale here yet) was no different whereas indeed, my previous E90 and N95 did a good job of hanging on to the signal.
If any HTC RF design engineers are reading this - please buck up, guys. It's the business crowd who depend on WM to keep their corporate life in sync for whom good reception really matters. You've worked so hard to make WM sexy, don't lose them.
"bars" on xperia are silly, in my room I have only 1 but it works far better than my old touch that has 4. So, if you have signal strenght problems may be a faulty device.
For interface problems you only need some training in the new world of windows mobile, by default is a pain but you can customize everything and make your mobile confortable to you in different ways. Nokia products are phones that can be used as pda, winmobile devices are pda that work as phone, who wants to buy a winmobile device should have this clear in his mind

I am really starting to love this phone and the interface i am slowly getting my head round - I am starting to see the light!
But its just the signal - GRRRRRRRRRRR Like i said in another post - It's like having the best pub in town, but with no beer!
I have 12 days left before i can send it back, dont want to, but i will have to and be sad and get the <cough> Blackberry <cough> bold

Yeah thats another thing I wanted to add...bars area subjective thing...but alas if you cant make a call, you cant make a call right...
Lucky you however. I can never go back to a non-touch screen phone...the Bold is a great device, but it has no touchscreen (and well the Storm is not a viable option for me).
If things dont work out, they dont work out unfortunately. At least you can't say you didnt give it a fair shot right
I thought i let people know that the signal shown on the phone might be desceptive. Read Day 2 on my first post.
nice that u are sharing ur experiences.
signal bars are not really a good gauge of actual call performances as u can't equate 1 bar of nokia to 2 bar of SE (for ex)
u really need to judge the call capabilities based on actual dropped calls or voice quality.

I'm with StarHub at present... I'd say stick with M1 or SingTel. Per-second billing works out cheaper, but you still get what you pay for...
Having come from a similar position (having all WinMo devices up until I switched to the dark side with an N95) I completely understand the pain. I bought a diamond and sent it straight back as I wasn't ready to part with my n95.
Having finally bought an X1, I have to say I'm falling in love with WinMo again, but the signal bars also worry me. However from personal experience, i've found that i've dropped far less calls than my n95, and I've even took calls in the basement car park at work where my n95 previously had none.
Also, as a Voda UK customer, one thing I didn't realise about the N95 was that when you have an HSDPA signal, your calls get bounced to VM.. This was on an advisory sheet in the box which I only found yesterday as I cleaned up my N95 for ebay.. (I did wonder why I got hardly any calls all day and people told me they couldn't reach me)
I'd say the bars on the screen definately aren't a good indication, stick with it.
Only other thing i'm trying to get comfort from at the minute is the GPS, my N95 always seemed to keep a strong signal, the X1 currently isn't great, but this may be because i'm using it in my nokia car holder... more to follow as I figure it out
ok.
i have seen enough complaints about weak reception of xperia. Nothing but wrong! Xperia has good signal, and it holds on to it. It switches fast between 3g and HSDPA. I live in a confluence between 3G and GPRS cells. I never missed a call, and browsing is a delight. I had a P990 in the switching between #G and GPRS was so annoying, breaking up the connection.
After that i had an W890i - Vodafone branded. A top receiving signal from the testers,At least what they said. For me: a crap. Constant drop of signal, a lot of missed calls, browsing: a nightmare in GPRS. On 3G- when i got good signal - a delight. Then i "enlighed" when i read your posts about bad signal on Xperia: It is the branding which destroys the X1 reputation, and it is making it worse in reception.
Apparently, the branding is modifying the radio software, in favour of the branding company. It seems like Vodafone is doing a crappy job with their radio algorhytms.
To all Xperia users that complain about signal: try update the software and get rid of branding. Stay on "unbranded" way. It is way better.
About Nokia: those phones are big liars: they show more signal than the real one they are able to receive. I was in a lot of situations, where nokia shows 2-3 bars of signal and was unable to establish a call conection. And the update of bars is so slow...., so you don't really notice the signal variation when you pass through a bad signal area, although inside, the phone struggles to keep the connection with cells.
On Xperia i noticed that the signal strength bar update is nearly instant, comparde to all my older phones.
Until now, very happy with my Xperia.I thought it is harder to use as a phone, but it is not. It is my first WM phone.
I have switched from a HTC TyTN to X1 and I can confirm that my X1 has a weaker reception. Thats a fact!
When i travel by train the X1 drops out several times and it's no point picking it up unless the train stops.
But when I talk to other X1 owners, they say the reception is fine. So maby Sony Ericson has f***ed up some of the phones?
My X1 is not branded and I use Telia Sonera as service provider, which always worked fine (untill I got the X1).
But, I still like the phone, best WinMo ever! Just hope that there will be an upgrade available soon, maby that will do the trick..?
I'm very angry... The X1 is the Phone i ever searched... But the Receiption is weak!
I switch from HTC Tytn II to X1. I use E-Plus (GSM1800) in Germany. I also have a Twincard, so i can use 2 Phones similar.
On X1 is allways 1 Bar Signal strengh less than Tytn II.
@Sir.Chunk:
I have an unbranded X1i (european version)
I come from a Touch Diamond, TyTN, SE w890, etc etc etc...
I have good signal and never experience reception problems with my X1
My carrier/provider works over 850MHz only and I have ZERO reception problems I am very pleased with the reception
Maybe your problem is not the Xperia but Vodafone
I used Vodafone for several years and the signal was so variable depending on which area I was
Or maybe your carrier uses different bands/specs in differen areas (assymetrical tower expansion with different coverage areas) thus your phone is picking up the strenghter signal, jumping from 2G to 3G, or from 900 to 2100 as you move around... maybe
Your reception could improve if manually adjusting phone setting to just one band / GSM or UMTS instead of "auto selection" ???
But 3 bars on one phone doesn't equal 3 bars on another.
Run FieldTest and have a look at the db values
This thread seems to be an example of 'ignorance breeds ignorance' with the exception of a few. For the newbs *roll eyes here*, just hardSPL and download a different radio, for God's sake!!!
Most WinMo limitations always have a way out, which makes this platform unique.

Okay guys, this is serious. I'm impressed by my JasJar but i'm not sure it does anything more that i actually need it for than my Imate Jam. As far as I can see there are some good points and some bad points about it and i wouldn't mind some opinons about whether its worth keeping or selling.
Okay my first view on the plus sides:
Screen is excellent quality
Wifi is very fast and much faster than the wifi sd card i have at the moment.
Keyboard is useful combined (but not as big as the fold out one i have for my imate)
Negative Sides:
3g doesn't seem to work in my area so i can't seem to benefit from that
Size is big (i would need a second phone to go out with etc)
Can't see much difference in speed with my level of usage
Pain in the ass to anwser it (imate jam is not a big phone at all)
Software is still a bugger to install etc.
Okay, my mine uses for the jasjar were to be for work. I would be booking appts and keeping track of those appointments and information regarding them on the pda for my work. Although harder to type in, i could in theroy do that on the imate jam. I don't use the wifi alot outside of the home (although it would be useful to use mirc, the web etc while girlfriend is on the pc).
At the moment i'm umming and ahhing because i have to take the phone with me everywhere (actually considering using the jasjar sim free while i'm off work and putting the imate jam back on the road as it were)
REALLY appreciate anyones help to this, its good but i'm not sure if its enough of a step for me to merit not selling it and getting ALOT of money for it (brought as upgrade through o2)
Look forward to the replys
Ian
I'm gonna tell you what I tell other people:
If you don't know what to do with a jasjar then buy the wizard.
The wizard size is as good as big as the jam, has wifi, keyboard and is in those ways much better then the jam.
The reason I need the pro is because I love the vga screen, keyboard and WM5, and I can give support to my customers through logmein.com using 3G.
So sell your jasjar and jam and go buy a wizard.
thanks for the quick response. I'm not sure that I would want a wizard really. I do think that I need to use the exec in a work situation before really considering getting rid of it.
That logmein.com looks rather cool, would like to be able to control my home pc while at work to setup downloads etc. the screen on this is rather special and i'm not against getting a second handset to use for going out etc.
would like to hear anyone elses views if possible.
just to point out to you and myself really i'm lying in bed writing this on the forum with real ease via wifi. hmmmmm another pro to the exec I think!

I've tried both, and apologies for readers of this forum, but the Wizard wins hands down. The Universal reminds me of why I ditched the first Ipaqs and went back to Palm years ago. Sure the Pocket PCs had better displays and you could show off playing movie clips, but that novelty soon waned when it was too big to carry and it took ages to lookup a phone number or check your diary.
You've got to weigh up what you _really_ need when you're away from your PC. The whole point to me of having a PDA is that I can access or update my information quickly at all times. The Ipaq seemd to be always at home or in my desk drawer just when I needed it, because it was a pain to carry. Even when I had it, it was sluggish finding the information I needed. The Palms won over because they went with me everywhere, and information retrieval was almost instant.
So, the Universal is a step back to the bad old days - except it's bigger and heavier. Good to show off with but impractical in most situations outside of the work environment because of its bulk.
Don't be fooled by the CPU either. Whatever advantage the Universal has on paper over the Wizard is sapped in real life by the need to update the VGA display. True, the Wizard is no speed merchant (even when compared to a Treo). But I found responsiveness to critical tasks (e.g. starting up Messaging to read/send a text, screen rotation, answering calls) significantly slower on the Universal - and that _really_ starts to annoy when you're in a rush.
So, everything I did with the Universal I can pretty much do on the Wizard, with the big difference that I can take it anywhere. Anyhing else can wait until I'm back at my PC. What's more, I can actually see who's calling and answer a phone call before it drops or diverts to voicemail
And don't forget the resale value. Given the trend of HTC Wizard / Prophet / Atom devices, the longer you hold onto the huge Universal the less saleable it's going to be. Sure, it fills a niche at the moment, but in 12 month's time, is a 1st generation device that big going to have anything but collectors' appeal?
So, unless you only use the Universal in the home and office, the larger keyboard and VGA display are"must haves", and you don't mind missing the odd phone call, then I would say the Wizard was the better bet.
If you really need a VGA display, a keyboard, and top performance, go for a proper PDA like the Dell X51v, a bluetooth keyboard and a seperate cellphone - it'll probably be cheaper, more flexible and easier to carry. And each element will work much better at what it is designed to do.
@Ineedtoys, what a refreshing and objective view on the subject. Having owned a Treo 650 and Clie TH55 I know what you're talking about. In the real world stability, size of device and battery life are still the key requirements and showing your latest toy to friends/work colleagues etc is nice but for most people is not a sufficient reason for buying a device. You either buy a device to meet a personal requirement or buy a device so that you can play with it "like a toy". Decide if you want a real tool or a "toy" first and then you'll be happy with your decision.
My view is that the Universal is not really a cell phone, it is an advanced PDA/mini tablet and you need to use it with another cell phone. The story for the Wizard may be different.
At first I always open the screen and rotated it to see who is calling me, and pick up the phone. Just like my old xda has it's screen outside.
But this take way to long, and most of the time the caller hung up before it was ready to rotate the screen and is able to pick up the call..
Now I just open the lid to see who it is. then close it again and pick up with the side green phone button leaving the pro closed.
If you use it this way i'ts perfect.
At first I had to get used of the size but now I am used to it.
People sometimes think: what the hell is that big thing?
But when I op the "laptop" and rotate it's screen and show the phone it's the coolest thing they've seen .
very interesting reading
Ihave a Universal (o2) for a week now, and am SERIOUSLY thinking of returning it for something else,
I like the Mini s (Wizard) too, but one subject that I believe is left aside is the battery life : with the Universal that I have tested for over a week if I did use the Wifi like 2 hours and a bit of BT and phone, then its battery would be gone by 5pm (starting at 9am !) quite a shame.
My point is : do these devices need to be pluged to the AC anytime we want to use to use the connexions, in that case I can stick with my laptop if need to be wired.
Or is it ony the Universal that is amazingly sucking the battery like no other ?
I appreciate your help as I have to decide if I send it back before friday ! ;-)
Re: very interesting reading
I presume you tried turning the screen brightness and WiFi power right down, and IR beaming off? The Wizard will definately give you longer as it doesn't have the battery sucking screen and has the low power OMAP processor.
The battery life in the Universal seems to get conditioned after a couple of weeks and does improve, but you don't have enough time to wait for that!
already better after 8 days
in fact I have noticed that it is getting better after a week (the battery),
but it's only because I now used the wifi only when I know I have a power nearby and I disable all connexion when I have it in my pocket, same for the brightness etc...
still.. the second point to change it is definately the size : I already have a tablet-pc to play with, so that will do it for now.
Back soon on this forum with the Wizard.
ill take your universal for my wizard
I've had a Wizard for a while, and thanks to O2's recent bargain offer, I've now got a Universal too. Over the past week I've had a good chance to live with them side by side. I've defended the Wizard in the past against the "it's only 200MHz" soothsayers, saying that with my previous comparison with a Universal, not only was it not slower, it actually felt more responsive.
Well now I lived exclusively with the Universal for a week, to get fully accustomed to its pace and foibles. I've just retrieved my Wizard from the drawer, and boy, I'm amazed at how snappy it really is in comparison!
Every program I open on the Wizard finishes loading before the Universal - Start, Media Player, TCMP, SplashID, Execl, Word. Even keeping apps in memory, and switching between them, is quicker (e.g. Open Messaging, red button back to Today. Open to Messaging (still shown in memory on the task bar) = half a second on Universal, almost instantaneous on Wizard). Both had a soft reset before starting, and have the same number of apps running, and similar PIM database sizes. The Universal is using a Corporate install. The only application that I can find that loads quicker on the Universal (by some margin in fact) is the Camera. Presumably this is because it has been significantly re-written and optimised to cope with the twin cameras and 3g videocalling.
Now I'm not disputing that the keyboard and screen, and the sleek black lines, are gorgeous on O2 Exec. Or that it has 3G, if you use it. Or has minor attractions like standard SD and a 3.5mm jack socket (like they're such a big deal). But I've got to be honest that I'm struggling to find anything else as to why it justifies its price. I appreciate it's more like a mini-laptop, but seriously, apart from providing VGA and the "luxury touch", the Wizard does so many things better!
E.g.
Much smaller
Much lighter
Phone rings first time - and every time
Phone speech path connects immediately on answer
No "Phone acrobatics" to see who's calling
No crashes on incoming SMS
Better Bluetooth range and quality to headset
Excellent one handed usablity
Has 5 more mappable direct access buttons (2x Soft, Messaging, Explorer, Comms Manager)
Doesn't make me look a total d*ck in the street (or even the office canteen) (no more than normal, anyway  )
Better battery life
More available memory
No screen lockups
Faster application loading
Faster application switching
Faster menu responses
I was convinced that once I'd got a Universal with the latest ROM, and removed all the O2 bloat, all those saying the Universal was much faster and quoting benchmark after benchmark would be proved right. But unless you're doing some serious multitasking or gaming, the reverse is true. Even QVGA movies in TCMP aren't that much smoother.
I guess the Universal is the old man's Jaguar of PDAs plodding steadily way. Big, heavy, thirsty, but as comfy as your favourite leather sofa, and built to last. But the cheeky little Wizard is far more street, practical, nippy, and easy to park, even if the flimsy doors go "clink" instead of "clunk"
I still haven't decided which goes on eBay though. Trouble is I like both, in their own way (I like big, comfy cars too). It's just a shame the Universal UI lags so much. It does spoil the whole experience when you know what its little upstart of a brother can do.
Now I know there are others out there who have both devices, especially since the O2 deal. Is my experience typical, or am I doing something drastically wrong?
I am also lucky that I have been able to obtain an Exec and then due to the fantastic offer O2 have had in January I also picked up a Wizard.
And a lot of what you say is quite correct. The Wizard has amazed me at the speed at which it does things and the general overall feel of using it. Even the keyboard (the one area I was suspicous of) has proven to be very good.
The Exec suffers from having a VGA screen. That is what is causing a lot of the lags I expect. For users who have moved on to the Exec from previous Windows Mobile / PocketPC devices, especially VGA ones, this is so not much of a surprise. Before I got the Exec I moved from a QVGA based HP 2210 PocketPC to a VGA based HP hx4705. The slow down on the device was quite something for screen redrawing etc and was widely commented on by users on sites such as PocketPCThoughts. I think that is why you / we are seeing the Wizard act so much more smoother than the Exec, simply due to the machine having less detail to move on the screen so things happen much quicker.
But for me the upgrade to the Exec was a Windows Mobile upgrade - I wanted a new PocketPC based device that was fully connected. I doubt I will ever use it for calls and for that reason I have it on a data only tariff.
The Wizard was only bought due to the price I could get it for and is now my main phone.
I love both devices for very different reasons. I also got them for very different reasons. When I need full connectivity with emails etc. I will carry both - yes the Wizard can do both but the Exec is better for tapping out documents on the road, has a better screen that is easier on the eye. But when I want to carry only one device and travel light the Wizard will always win.
Thanks acetuk, at least I know the Exec's working as it should. I'm not anti-Exec, I have had several situations this week where the Exec won hands down - typing up meeting minutes while I remember what's been said, doing an urgent document review with a colleague (although he did have to squint a little), and checking these forums over WiFi at home So it does come into its own as a business tool, which is how it is marketed after all.
And if you're using the data package in anger then the equation does swing a bit the other way - although the data 5 is a very expensive way of doing it!
I just thought it was interesting to see how well the Wizard performs in hindsight - and how marked the speed difference was on the Wizard, once I'd been using the Exec for an extended period. I knew the screen slowed it down, but I was still expecting some turn of speed given the 524MHz CPU and previous comments by people saying how it really was much faster. But I saw the spinning disc this far more this week than I ever did with the Wizard - and had to reboot more frequently as well.
It also proves how irrelevant to real life reviews and adverts based on "benchmarks" and CPU clock speeds, really are, and that anyone who treats those as gospel is going to be sorely disappointed.
I fully agree - I started skipping benchmarks about three years ago. If I see them in a review I go straight pass them.
In the real world the device is as good as you can make it work for you. If a device doesn't cover your basics then so be it but that doesn't make a device bad. My Exec is slower than my hx4705 for loading PlanMaker and for general feel. But it is so much quicker for data entry. So what I lose in load time I gain in usability. So I win overall as far as I am concerned, regardless of any benchmarks stating overwise.
But the Wizard is an amazing piece of kit. Having PocketInformant running on both, syncing via a hosted exchange server, is a major productivity step forward for me. Pick up the device most useful for the moment, run a sync over wifi or GPRS and get to work. Today I updated all of my tasks and appointments on my Exec using it's excellent keyboard, sync'd to exchange, picked my Wizard up and sync'd again. In less than a minute both devices were fully up to date.
As for the data side of the Exec you are again quite correct. That is why I signed my Exec up for the Data36 tariff with O2 - that's 1mb a day with 5-6mb spare for when I need it. So far that is working very well for me combined with my wifi network at home. I'm paying for it but not too much at £18 / month approx but with no voice calls on top.
Now, if I can only understand better how to get two Windows Moibile devices, two PCs (one private, one work) and one exchange account syncing together better I will be happy!! That might need to go in to another post!
Again I have both thanks to O2 generosity but although I love my wizard for its size and the fact it can do anything the universal can do I would dispute the speed issue.
I find the universal to be the speedier of the two and the screen is amazing.
I love em both is the fact. Why compare them ? Just feel the love

Can you quantify this? Are you saying the menus, program loading, application switching and screen refreshes are quicker on your Universal? I'd be intersted in finding out why that differs from the comparisons above. Unless your Wizard is slower than it should be, or you're not using an intelligent task manager?
By the way, my current view is that I will keep both, for maximum love

Using a basic install on both with exactly the same apps and I do feel the universal is faster although I havent benchmarked this or even run them side by side. It just seems faster to me.
However I dont have an issue with either. Its not something im bothered about, just an observation. Im sure you will find others that thing the uni is faster.
Stability
Hi,
Before JasJar I own an IpaqHW6515. Generally JJ is much better that 6515 but using this device as unique device for communicate is not confortable as 6515 because:
1. battery life. my jj can't run for one complete day. With 280 grams devide, increasing of 20/30 grams using a much better battery would be appreciate.
2. BT: 6515 was much better in quality and range. and with a such big and havy device quality of BT would be a MUST because I don't know others but I try to use as much as possible handset because after a while with phone in my hand, I feel tired.
3. I need to soft reset few time a day. This because I start missing calls as device crash without reason while in standby.
4. I ALWAYS have problems (calling mainly) when I need something urgent. And I get crazy because I have to soft resent loosing precius minutes.
For this reasons, I confirm that JJ is best business device (i should not come back to 6515) but I've decided to buy a very light a small phone for make calls and use JJ only for Emails, web....
At least till a new rom will make stable the device.
Ciao
Stefano
Well, this bites. Not only is my JJ slow thanks to WM5, but also thanks to its big screen. I have gotten sick of my constant resents, and I've gone back to my WM2003 device. I feel eBay a callin' my name.
Morning all....
I dont wish to be a fish out of water here, but can i ask if anyone of you have flashed the rom and upgraded...??
I'm now running with the following :-
Rom ver.........1.13.82 WWE
Rom date.......11/30/05
Radio ver.......1.04.02
Protocol ver...1.13.188 WWE
Having had both the XDA II and the IIi, it sure seemed slower than both of them....then I flashed it !!
It is both faster and smoother than my previous XDA's, I haven't once had to soft reset yet....and my battery last more than a day
For those of you who haven't done so yet.... it's a must !!

The magman
it's true
The Magman,
I flashed my JJ to o2 ROM and in effect looks more stable faster. I've done during this quite week end and therefore I cannot say solved until I've tried JJ during a complete work week.
Ciao
I've had the XDA, XDA2, 2i and now the Exec - though I also had a play with a mate's Wizard whilst installing some software for him overnight a few weeks back.
I found the Wizard to be a lovely bit of kit, though I wouldn't necessarily say any faster (he had a basic install on, which is what I have on the Exec). The screen on the Exec is absolutely fantastic, the first times I noticed this was on opening the unit for the first time, and when I started whipping files to the Wizard via BT: there is absolutely no comparison between a QVGA and a VGA screen.
I think if the Exec hadn't arrived, then I would have gone for the Wizard, it's a good phone. However, I don't think I would find it easy from the 2i to Wizard, given the smaller screen and the somewhat cheapish keyboard.
Cheers
Ant

The O2 Exec came with the same versions as yours out of the box, so already using the latest.
Have been having too much fun with my mini s and exec so far to even think about flashing the roms
Total arse!!!!
why....
size - way too big as a phone or pda - great as a sub notebook though!
signal strength - crap! 1 bar where my v 600 motorola had 4 barsand my m2000 had 4! (all on orange)
cannot play movies smoothly at 640x320
ate all of my data allowance in 1 evening - dunno why - it was just in my coat pocket!
however,
lovely screen - really really great!
thats about all the good stuff!
its going back! i wish orange did the m3000 over here!!!!!
please feel free to flame me or agree!
Agree in parts, but no in others.
The films problem could be due to your program, or the compression methodology.
The gripes I have are mainly about usability. Why are the SD card and power button on the BOTTOM of the unit??? just weird. Also why can't we easily map different buttons, why does virtually eveything have to be a registry hack??
ORANGE WE NED AN UPDATE
I sort of agree. I had a m1000 and had it upgraded to m5000 and It could be better.
I had the memory issue too. My wifes fault though she decided to accidently record a 25 minute phone call. SO CHECK FOR LARGE RECORDED FILES.
The long delayed ringing issue and 2 second silence on answer is a joke. Spoke to Orange on this explaining that it was a common issue on everyones m5000 they were puzzled.
Also Bluetooth tools what happened! What a let down.
****ORANGE WE NEED A ROM UPDATE DOES ANYONE HAVE A DATE IF THERE IS ONE****
I dont really understand why you posted this. Everyone on this board already has an HTC Universal (or very close to everyone). Since the device has been out for months now, any of us who wanted to take the device back already have. So the people you are giving these "first impressions" to already have the device and what you are saying here is nothing new to anyone. (Although I disagree with all of your points.)

Surely you saw the size of the phone before you bought it? I personally quite like the size, and wouldnt have minded a slightly bigger version with a bigger screen. You also need to realise that the size of a device is *not* independant of its features. The device has a 520mhz cpu, VGA screen, bluetooth, wifi, phone, 3G(WCDMA), decent full keyboard, camera, flashlight, stereo speakers, microphones, 2nd camera for voice calls, fairly heavy battery to run all of this, IRDA, etc etc. With our current technology, the Universal is the absolute smallest you can get all these features in. There is simply no way they could make the device significantly smaller without dropping features.
Given all this, the phone obviously was not designed for some people, for example, 15 year old girls. This should have come as no suprise to you, since you must have either looked at the phone before you bought it, or looked on the internet to see the size of the phone. Yes?

Perfect signal strength here, my bars are always maxxed out. You may have very bad 3G/UTMS/WCDMA coverage in the area where you live. Go into phone options, go to the band tab, and change it from AUTO to GSM. This may help your signal.

If you are, Click Options->Video->Video Driver, and choose either Intel XScale or Raw Framebuffer.

As far as I know, this can only be user error. Ive been using the device for awhile now, and it only ever uses bandwidth when I set it to use bandwidth. If you only have a 5mb or so allowance, opening up a very graphic heavy page could use as much as 5mb. I'd recommend turning off images or using a service which downsamples images to make them smaller to download. You could also use something like this: http://www.google.com/gwt/n
m5000
You are right in most of what you say other manufactures i.e O2 etc. have brought out radio upgades that appear to sort out signal errors etc. However Orange have not brought out an update we are still on radio 1.3. So i'm sure returning them wont make any difference. Other people have had many problems using updates from other network providers. We just want something simple that works. Surely that's not too much to ask.
Other that I quite like the handset and the size to me isn't a bother.
hi there,
i'm new in this forum and i'm going to get a trinity shortly but i've read here some problems with touch screen or audio problem...
At the end, how much are you happy with your trinity? should you buy it again?
Thanks all
bye
pretty damn happy, best phone I've ever owned.
If I was buying new I would however go for the white version, the black still has issues with flaking paint.
I have a white one, great pda phone!!!

Compared to what? In comparision to my wife the Trinity means nothing to me... Regarding all other things: I am very happy... better battery and this device would be my last phone.
Very good machine
The problems you're referring to are fairly minor; Using the touch screen does slow down the running of the machine whilst the screen is being touched. This doesn't affect generally tapping/dragging/etc, but it only really noticeable when you're playing games that require dragging around the screen a lot. The audio problem seems to be that there's less bass reproduction if you install one of the "GPS fixed" ROMS (although I believe one of the ROMs now has a patch for this).
These are fairly minor issues though, other than that, it's a superb machine. Good size/weight, and very good performance. The added bonus of GPS (if you install the new ROMs) makes it a unique machine on the market.
Lee
for me it is only a cell or pda...
i'm happy for other important thing
wishmaster... yes, i agree with you... but if you are in this forum to read these thread something tells me that it's more than a simple cell (otherway get a 50€ (30£) motorola )...
Best PDA phone I've used. I gave a way my Tytn after getting my Trinity. If you don't need/want a keyboard, it is great.
Black peeling, D-pad and OK button are failing
Failing buttons forced me to use scroll wheel and 2nd OK button. I like the phone even more now
Waiting for HTC to get the bugs worked out before I send it in for repair.
I am really happy with my white Trinity since I installed the second Dopod rom and enabled the GPS feature. I cannot think of anything that my device does not do that is expected of a modern mobile phone.
It is the complete article as far as I am concerned.
It looks cool, is small enough not to look stupid when making calls, and is packed with a great operating system and software, and to top it all it is fully customisable to suit my needs and requirements.
No complaints here at all.
Ok then, just one.....When will Orange release the official rom update for the Gps to work on Trinity's that were purchased before they released them?
That for me would be the icing on the cake.
The phone rocks - can harldy keep my hands off it
It still ok but I'm not really happy.
htc still does not offer a gps update, the black coat is peeling off (already after one week!!!) and it has a bad w-lan adapter (bad signal and no working auto-detection wether the network uses WEP, WPA or WPA2 or a mix)

Funny situation. the rom is available in Orange France, but the phone is no more available. And the rom seems to not be available in Uk, but the phone is available.
Happy, but it is my first day
Got my (white) SPV M700 this morning and within 1 hour I:
1- Connected to Activesync & synchronised my contacts, calendar, notes, emails...etc.
2- I went into the favorit > Sat Nav & downloaded Orange's Sat Nav program (It woked a treat - No ROM flashing or anything ) It actually guided me back home.
3- Called Orange & asked them to unlock my phone so I can use my O2 SIM.
It is a lovely piece of kit (Phone, PDA, Camera, GPS, 3G, WiFi) All in one sexy machine that happens to be 100% compatible with my BMW's BT (it downloaded the entire contacts list (500 of them) to the car's computer.
When I got home I've played with it a bit, then put it on my desk and wheeped at its beauty
The PDA part is ok, a little bit slow but bearable. Although I'm having problem with the phone part mainly getting disconnected when trying to answer the phone and sometimes it wont connect even if I have a full bar.
The best phone i've ever had. All in one: Phone, PDA, GPS, Camera.
I'll put it this way: I can't think of a better phone at the moment... It's got ALL anyone could ask for, in a very decent size. It's not perfect but keep in mind that it's a fairly recent model, and I have no doubt we'll get there.
The only thing I could wish for that's not there yet is a multi-touchscreen (cf. iPhone but not only), and as far as I know there's nothing on the market yet with that feature.
Thumbs up for you guys too, I discovered this site through a friend (just making my first posts, hi everyone) and I'm amazed by the quantity (and quality) of hard work you've all already put in to solving the existing problems and making things better for all. Keep up the good work, and big cheers...
My comparison is with a BlueAngel which I recently lost. Small form factor, brilliant display, noticeably faster wireless, great camera. IMHO the Trinity is a serious device...only problem now is what to do with my external GPS!
Its Awesome
I've had mine for about a week, I have the white, its so cool!!!!!
I had the 838pro before this which made it a bit bulky and heavy with the keyboard which I don't miss.
All in all, its a great PDA/Phone
Now next challenge, setting up Push Email.
R.
I am newbie in this forum, in general i am pretty satisfied with my HTCP3600i! However, i sometimes find it a bit lagging...just you know it's Samsung CPU not Intel.....i once had a thought of go for Atom Life in place, but ended i chose HTC, the reason is i've heard a lot negative comments about Atom's product batter life in a word Short!!
Has some flaws : No wm6, no minisdHC, no standard audio jack. wm6 and minisdhc I hope they'll correct
Wow! It is fast....
I know others have said this but I must reinforce that. I have been running WM6.5 on my (old!) HD for a while and with the new manilla 2.5 (sense) UI it is clearly struggling a bit. I am sure that Dutty and co will improve on that but the HD2 is clearly much more able to handle this impressive UI.
Just got mine from T-Mobile UK so here is my initial feedback to those still drooling over the videos and pictures:
Appearance - Looks great, actually feels slimer than the HD - I know it is but you will see what I mean when you handle one. The curved back (like i-phone) makes it even slimmer at the edges than the 11mm measurement would make you think. The screen looks great - you can see the dots across the screen in certain light reflections (directly across the screen) but I have not noticed any at all in use - just with bright light at shallow angle across the screen. The screen is noticeably bigger than the HD, same brightness. The screen edges are also (as reported) closer to the edge which adds to the impact of screen real-estate on offer.
Only adverse comment on design is the sharpness of the edges to the camera lens surround - the lens edging is sharp enough to damage furniture so beware. HTC need to fix this one. It is minor on the scale of things but completely at odds with the rest of the device which oozes quality.
Branding. T-mobile have put their mark on the phone - nothing externally but the boot-up and shut down splash have T-mobile branding. There is a T-mobile (Web & Walk) spalsh screen that pops up when you start Opera (otherwise completely standard) and there is a T-Mobile IM tool that has failed to work so far.
Unboxing - my box (standard green HTC box just like the videos) had no pouch (leather case). I called T-Mobile and they will be sending one but according to their list they have no mention of either the pouch (that is what HTC call it) or the (miserly) 2Gb miro SD card. There is no (micro) CD like you see in some videos and apart from standard HTC stuff there is a T-Mobile folded sheet about something - was far too busy plying with my new toy to read the paperwork...
Software - all the usual stuff is there. Notes is in 'Outlook' and there is no Co-pilot software to test for 15 days (unless its on the micro SD card (not checked), just ordered and downloaded Co-pilot 8 because it looks great on the HD2.
Camera - the pictures are great and it takes photos immediately - it really has no lag at all on almost anything. The flash is actually quite bright.
Performance - did I say it was fast? Vista sync with PC was faultless, everything just happens immediately - this is also enhanced because apps are never actually closed. There is, as reported, no HTC 'X' task manager to close apps so they are just minimised. So when you start them up again in fact all you are doing is lttbbing back to the app that may already be open. The result is near instant response and when you select, for instnce, Google Map, it is not only already loaded but has maps present too (albeit the last maps). Opera is much faster than on the HD. IE is still very poor by comparison (BTW - Opera is called 'Web & Walk' in the start menu on this T-Mobile phone). The "My location" function just works - on GPRS, HSDPA, WiFi ann PC sync. Weather looks really neat!
Initial Software Loading and trials - just had to hard reset! I installed Monocube Safemode and could not then start-up the handset in other than safe mode!!! Not impressed - wonder if that is something to do with the capacitive screen.
Resco Explorer 2008 - great
Coreplayer - installed OK but noticed that 700Mb DivX film had audio sync problem. This film and this coreplayer version on HD seemd to have no problem.
more to come when I have re-loaded the software and re-synced - don't use Monocube Safe Mode.
I cannot rule out something else having cause the need to hard-reset but it only occured after my first power-up after installing the sotfware. I will report this to Monocude (who make it) and report back if I get anything.
Love the phone - very happy.
This is my first HTC and to be frank, I LOVE IT. Maybe because it replaced my SEX1?
Playing music is a delight, the speaker is amazing. Had to reduce the sound to 50% as it was too loud.
Picture taking, could be better, but as I'm used to SEX1, I can say its impressive.
Fast? Fast? It's lightning fast. This device changed my opinion towards WM. I was appalled, but now I'm extremely happy.
Only one annoying thing, when there is no data connection I get this pop up every time I turn on the phone, which is quite annoying.
Overall, I give it a 8/10. It could very easily be improved with ROM updates.
But why did they make sms notification so small?
I got mine yesterday. (Donated by a certain someone, you know who you are . )
Gotta say it truly is one of THE most amazing pieces of mobile tech I've seen in all my years as a technician. For the 1st time I can finally say winmo users finally have something that knocks the socks of the (in my opinion) now defunct iPhone and indeed any others available to date The speed of everything on this is just amazing, never did I think winmo could achieve this. Of course HTC did an amazing job covering over winmo you really never see it for anything.
I've been reading reviews online and in papers (ya I know, paper, im so old-fashioned sometimes lol ) and all the reviews say the HD2 still couldn't beat the iPhone etc so I was holding off buying it. But don't listen to the reviewers they're just too critical, this phone really is the biz, go get it.
Also, as this phone has no Hardware Keyboard it can be a bit tricky at first. I used to refuse to own a phone without a physical one but replacing the default HTC softKB with Fingerboard and everything is perfect Some minor tweaks and videos, battery etc are all working above and beyond any media smartphone I've used (and Ive even used the iphone for 5 weeks).
Anyways enough of my wild ravings about the phone. If anyone wants to know anything about the HD2 gimme a shout, happy to answer anyone
Just got mine today from.... Vodafone!!! Can you believe for once they've got it out with everyone else????
It's every bit as good as I'd hoped (not surprising as I'm stepping up from an early Tytn).
As tony wheeler found though, you can be too clever.... I originally had an XDA 2 with TomTom Nav 5, forced my Tytn to load it years ago and long before TomTom supported it (in fact I'm not sure they ever did). Tried to force it on the HD2 and all I got was a corrupt screen and it froze. Only needed a soft reset to get it going again, but a bottled out at that point.
I noticed that my favourite game (Bubblet) is missing (I'm a simple soul) and so far I cn't get .tsk skins to load properly, but hey - it's only day one.... plenty of time yet.
Update: sorted Bubble using hints and tips at the top of this forum, thanks TB!! Also, got my skin working by pasting it into the windows folder. It then appears in the advanced Today edit screen.

Guys,
people have been complaining about the messaging application being laggy especially for contacts which have long message trail...is this correct? Are you experiencing it?

Eh, not really.
Ive already got 113 messages (+25 on my SIM) on mine and not noticed any slow down or lagg. Also have loads of emails and no slow down on the email tab either.
Mine arrives tomorrow via DHL, looking forward to it.
Moving back to WM from iPhone, been playing with iPhone for the last six months. I have always been a WM believer, but I always look and test the competition in the real world. Then I have a opinion based on first hand experience.
While the iPhone has many nice features, when it comes to business it isn't as flexible or useful as a WM device.
That's not to say WM doesn't have issues, it does. That's for another thread though.
iphone switch
I will be interested to hear your honest opinion of the HD2 compared with iphone.
The IP screen and nav functions are very fluid, but I think the HD2 is equal or better.
The HTC Shell makes a huge difference.
Without it I would have bought an iphone myself, and that is saying something!
