Skyfire v0.85 Free - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Sorry for my bad english im from Mexico
The guys of skyfire has released it. You dont have to register for the free beta.
Skyfire v0.85 The best internet browser
Description:
Skyfire brings the PC internet experience to your mobile. Watch videos on YouTube or Hulu, connect with your friends on Myspace or Facebook, shop on Amazon, or listen to music. If you can experience it on your computer, you now can do it with Skyfire on the go. Skyfire is fast, easy to use and available for free for many smart phone models.
What is Skyfire?
Skyfire is a free, downloadable mobile web browser that allows you to experience the internet on your phone exactly like on your PC. Now, you can use the full web from your mobile phone with unprecedented speed and simplicity – without the typical restrictions and limitations that current ‘mobile web’ efforts offer. It’s “The Web”, not some mobile web.
A brand new browsing experience.
Mobile browsing exactly like your PC.
With Skyfire on your phone you can for the first time ever shop, watch web video, listen to web music and stay connected on your social network -- just as you would on your PC. We're talking about full-featured PC versions of your favorite websites. Skyfire gives you speedy page loads, full audio, images and video. From Myspace, Facebook, YouTube to Hulu - it's the full web experienced on your phone.
The real web, served-up right.
Unlike other mobile browsers, Skyfire supports the desktop version of Adobe Flash applications so sites, including those that serve-up video and music, are rendered exactly as you would expect - just like your PC. You will instantly recognize the content, be familiar with the page layout -- which is not true for most mobile browsing experiences. We support all that's good about today's web - not just Flash, but also Silverlight, Ajax, QuickTime and more. And even better: Skyfire evolves with the newest capabilities without you having to do anything.
Go anywhere, see anything.
Not only do we deliver video and audio, we also deliver everything else you routinely do on the web. Get maps, check sport scores, view weather forecasts, read the news, check flights, and stay active on your favorite social networks. From the Top 10 of websites all the way down to the obscurest of pages - you'll do it all from your mobile phone just like you do on your PC.
Blazing fast.
Skyfire is faster than any mobile web browser you've ever used. You'll load web pages as fast as your PC and eliminate the long delays and error messages you get with other mobile browsers. Don't take our word for it, check out this bake-off by Laptop Magazine and see how we handily outclassed the iPhone 3G.
Easy to use.
It's easy to experience the PC web on your phone with Skyfire's clickable content and intuitive navigation. We know it's a small screen and that's why we made navigating intuitive with full screen, thumbnails and adaptable zooming modes. You simply and quickly get to exactly where you want to be on a page - navigating at speeds that make the experience enjoyable.
Quick content and simple search.
All the places you routinely visit are a click away. We have handy links to popular websites on the start page. Your bookmarks and your browsing history is just a click away. Better yet, you can even bookmark your specific view (zoom level, position) of content on a web page to get exactly to the right place in one click.
We made search simple. Use our nifty SuperBar to perform a search or enter a URL from a single field. We even suggest the most commonly used search keywords as you type. Plus the search results are from Google and Yahoo and are presented in easy to read tabs for each category: web, images, and videos, and maps. Simple and it's all a click away.
Plenty of handy features.
We're always adding new features as we roll out our beta releases. Recently, we made it easy to share and easy to find mobile sites.
Discover something on the web that you want to share? Now you can send it to your friends from Skyfire via a text message. We even shorten the URL to easily fit into a single SMS text message with room to spare for your own words.
Don't like the big web page on your small screen? Want to go to the mobile site instead? If we find a mobile version of the same site, Skyfire lets you know - then you decide if you want the mobile or full website. Simply look for a 'Mobile Version' link at the top left of a page. Skyfire even renders iPhone specific web sites nicely.
On the phone you own - and free!
You can load Skyfire on your existing Windows Mobile (version 5 or 6) or newer Symbian Series 60 phones in a few steps. In a matter of minutes, you can install it either over the air or via your PC. It's free - what more can we say. No need to buy an expensive new phone and get locked into a new contract just because you want a better mobile internet experience.

Many have been aware of it since the development started. I'm not saying you can't post it, just do these types of post in the General forum.
Also, I suggest removing your download link.

It's not a matter of how someone feels, just a general concept of this section of the forum. As far as development goes, it won't be much of a development topic since nobody here is developing it.

you are right champ but here is so many software that should not been here and a first "free" skyfire beta is really interesting.
I installed the cab but skyfire finds no connection ? It starts searching and runnes hsdpa on my polaris but i only see "connecting..." but nothing happens. Is this still limited for US citizens ? or only for wwe ROMs ?

Shouldn't be limited to the US, Skyfire's page gives the option for users outside the US and doesn't require the login anymore.
EDIT: Looks like they only have US, Canada, & UK listed for avail countries. Not bad though, ESPN loaded in under 5 sec, video playback is decent, but I still hate the UI.

0.8.5 does not work for me, in France... go back to v0.8.0.
Phone : Trinity

i begin to hate this skyfire idiots. why does a application ony run in three countries !

It's likely to do with regions. I tried accessing www.hulu.com from it, knowing that it won't work on a desktop browser as I'm in the UK, and guess what? Doesn't work as it knows I'm in the UK.. As all pages are pre-rendered on the Skyfire servers, that means that I'm being served by a Skyfire server in the UK. If I were being served by a US server, Hulu would have worked.

:bah
no wvga support

Skyfire works great here in Canada!
Got to get used to the browser but, overall, it's decent.
Well, it's a good FREE alternative to PIE.... no tough to beat

Im from Mexico and Skyfire works very well on wifi
I have a Blueangel

Skyfire is good. I have tried the previous version which didn't support surfing via-proxy setting. Has this version fix that?

correct me if I'm wrong..but this has been out for at least a month hasn't it? I've been using it for at least a month

last version doesn't work!

ok it installs loads then dont work just ses locating and nothing happens this is over wifi and it works as im posting this via opera any ideas?

No, because some of the Opera builds have been redeveloped by users here, not to mention the work it takes to obtain the builds. Skyfire is a free app for anyone to download. Big difference, pay attention before you decide to argue with my point.

Thanks daniel2020,
Now I can use Skyfire in my country, as I can't download it in the official website!!!!
It is working here, but there are a few considerations: it is not real VGA, Opera is, opera is more zoom friendly.

Emulation of iPhone Browser? Why not?

This question always crossed my mind, how come nobody has emulated the iPhone web browser? I've tried IE, Opera, and the mobile Firefox but they're all junk compared to the mobile Safari - mainly because of the finger movements that make it super easy to navigate. This is really the only advantage other than GUI "swiftness" the iPhone has.
Please discuss, and if your response is "why dunt u buy an itele lolz", you totally missed the point.
you have to try picsel browser, some ppl say its better than safari,
and about opera, if you tried opera mobile you have the wrong version because opera mini is the one you want to have. It is not very finger friendly but it is very fast and also very good to use with d-pad
cheers
well i only use opera mobile mini is not really my cop of tea
Look at skyfire.com. It's not out yet, but seems promising!

Anyone know if skyfire is a proxy? or is it just a different engine? WebDAV?

Yes it does, nice demo.
Thanks, SkyFire looks very nice! I'm using Opera atm because it's the only half-decent browser I've found - however the zoom features suck because it can't render text correctly and you can't browse as swiftly compared to Safari. However SkyFire is very interesting, I'll be looking into this further.
Cheers
Saw in the Hermes thread that the WM6.1 PIE has an option that allows you to view the entire webpage then tap to zoom in on a certain portion of it. Sound familiar?
Wonder whatever happened to M$ deepfish browser? I wasn't one of the lucky ones who got on the beta test list. And I don't see anything new posted on the project website.
Is there any way to fool PIE into telling a site that it is an iPhone??
I know it's possible to get PIE to broadcast that it is a desktop, so why not an iPhone??

Yes, it is proxy-based . However, it is the best browser Ive seen for a mobile device to-date. They have a video on YouTube & it looks very promising. Definitely better than Safari because it not only supports AJAX, but full FLASH 8 & 9 as well. If you access ESPN.com, you can actually see the video's of the highlights to the right of the page just like you would on a regular desktop.

Well... Opera Mobile 9.5 will be released in a week or so. It's much better than Safari
Pisel would be just as good as safari - correction, better - if it supported flash. My only two gripes with picsel is the inability to view flash, and not being able to set it as my default browser. Its fast, the nearly-limitless zooming beats the pants off of anything available now or in near future. If I'm not planning to edit them, i open my text files with it too.
Before we get Opera 9.5, the top two browsers in terms of speed are Netfront 3.5 followed by Opera Mini 4.
Netfront is way better than Picsel browser. Picsel is slooooww. It also have memory full problem, on top of other bugs.
I hve done some bencemark between all these browser in the Athena forum, if you're interested.
i been playing around with netfront... and im very impressed... its prob the fastest browser per load time... and its browsing is very nice allowing finger movements... also double tap on screen to zoom out of the page
which in turn opens up a window and allows u to use a nav box to scroll along the bigger portions of the page... i highly recommend for people to try it out ....
Edit: Netfront also has full ajax2.0 support

Best Browser?

Hi,
what you guys this is the best web browser for HTC Touch?
I think the Picsel Browser is very good.
Pls. tell us your best browser.
Thanks!
I've been using Opera.
I think opera mini right now but I think skynet or opera mobile 9 soon will be in the coming months. Both promising full browsing and skynet will be free
I think you mean skyfire browser.
Can some one tell me the difference between:
Picsel and Opera?

Yeah, no Skynet browser please. We turn over control of our web browsing to them and before you know it they'll be self aware and launching our nukes against us. Judgment day. Then they'll activate Arnold to come back in time and kill you, because you are the future leader of mankind.
Ahhh, which browser
I actually like all of them IE, Opera, NetFront...
I have found that depending on the particular website, one will work better than the other. IE works just fine for a lot of websites and has the best compatibility. Opera is great for certain websites that IE just can't display properly. NetFront works best on (poorly written) websites that have too many damn frames and cutsie html features that only impress the person who made the website. The beauty is you can install and use more than one browser to make sure you get into the websites you need. (iPhone can't do that...) I, btw, need to link into my work with Citrix and the Touch is the only phone I know that can do it. I am the envy of my colleagues at work!
I will look for this Skyfire...?

Its great as said by Brigthand, but, I hate the part where it says that 'it uses web server to capture the image of the whole web page and then sends it back to the device'. This is a great threat to our privacy who use devices to input credit card numbers; online banking etc.
My netfront still rules
Yes, understanding that I fully agree. Like someone looking over your shoulder. Definately not good!
Opera Mini does the same thing, so who cares? Just don't surf illegaly on your phone and you're good. Illegal stuff is usually too demanding for phones anyway...
I don't know why... but I guess I would trust Opera more then the creator of Skyfire. The data goes through a proxy in both which makes it much faster, same thing happens on the sidekicks.
did I get banned
hey I just got my skyfire invitation last night installed and started playing with it even checked some adult websites figured out that it does open all kinds of video but today avery time I try opening it it says lost network conection try again later just doesnt work wondering hat happened
wasn't there a transformer autobot named skyfire?
There was an announcement that it will go Public Beta Morrow!
The public beta is out now. I can't get it to work w/ the T-Zones proxy hack which is a bummer, it works over wifi tho. Pretty good so far, it plays youtube videos straight from the site.
skyfire
Hey skyfire runs good on my wing I have windows 6.1 OTPV6 and I just loaded version 0.85.0.7927 from the first forums page under development & hacking. Youtube looks good and runs smooth thats running wifi , but I did notice it takes lots of battery power

Now don't most US carriers do the same thing anyway?? But like another users stated, If you’re not doing anything illegal on it, you’re good to use it. I've been using it on the old ATT Wireless (mMode) network and by that network being mainly WSP with limited Http support. Skyfire is wonderful. I have been using Opera mini and Mobile to get things done completely through http but still hitting brick walls with some sites.
With skyfire, the only wall I've come to thus far is openview... site with its certificate needing to be installed/accepted. Looking for a solution on that now. Other than that is GREAT for me and my $25 true unlimited data plan.
Here is the skyfire 0.85 public cab file.
Skyfire is a great program.
Try skyfire now!!!!!!
I like skyfire. iv been using it for a while now. it is alittle buggy but i think its worth it. It loads web pages pretty fast without wifi and with wifi enabled its really fast for a mobile browser. i just think the scrolling and the zooming function could be way better.I know that skyfire reqires your phone number to work but if your interested in trying then try this download i have below. its an older beta version, (my first 1 actuallyfrom about a year ago lol) this version may only work with wi fi enabled. Just extract, then drag the folder anywhere on your pocket pc. let me know how this works for u guys.
skyfire and opera are completely different to me skyfire has flash settings for ANY WEBSITe includin for the lonely people xD and i dont think opera has flash settings like skyfire but i hate skyfire load up screen but you need a connection i use wi fi so that a con on opera
Skyfire is Awesome!!
i have been using skyfire for three days now and it works flawless. as to the privacy issue, just dont go to places you would put vital info and just browse other sites for fun and distraction. i have been able to go to all my favorite sites. all worked wonderfull.
Skyfire too slow or too buggy?
Hi,
I asked this in another thread last week, but noone answered.
I'm using my mobile phone HTC HD2 since 2 weeks.
I'm searching a webbrowser which is able to play flash streams.
I used Opera 10... it didn't work
I tried Opera 9.5 with this fix of another thread... it didn't work
And for a few days I tried Skyfire 1.5x and the stream beginns to load, but all sites are loading very, very slowly. The other browser are loading faster.
By the way... the stream loads, but just 47% and then it's over... :'-(
Now my question:
Is there a webbrowser which is able to play flash streams?
What is the problem of Skyfire??
Regards
GameCrasher

Internet Explorer Mobile 6 - Something worth looking forward to...

Hi,
IE 6 for mobile devices has been anncounced. When will it be available? Can't say for sure, but for more info including screenshots, go here: http://www.theunwired.net/?item=bro...obile-6-aka-6-on-6-is-real-and-shows-its-face
I really like the compatibility option in IE6! Not to mention, it'll include flash.
Looks like with this or skyfire, we won't have any problem with flash sites on Xperia or any other mobile device for that matter...
Best regards.
Thanks for the link! Wish they mention flash and silverlight though.

This was what was said by Microsoft when it first announced IE Mobile 6: "The new version of Internet Explorer Mobile adds the ability to easily view full-screen Web pages and multimedia on the Web with a smartphone. By taking advantage of Internet Explorer 6 technologies and supporting established and upcoming industry standards such as H.264, Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight, the updated Internet Explorer Mobile gives people a rich mobile Internet experience."
hard to get excited imho
most people who are into computer
are moving away from all browsers
made by ms as they are less secure and
behind with nicking features from the rest
and a lot slower
i'll take a chome, opera, firefox or even safari on my wm
device before i turn back to PIE
i tried chrome, i moved back to explorer!
chrome is like a lite version of explorer.
I used to think I felt that way, but I find myself more and more turning to PIE when I just want to check Facebook or Engadget. I can browse one handed, and over GPRS it's much faster (not the browser itself, but as the mobile versions of these pages bring down much less data...) and loads up faster as well. I still like Opera for the full web experience but PIE does come in handy...much better on my battery life as well.
Talking of browsers from Microsoft... (not on mobile device) you should definitely check out IE 8 Beta preview... it has improved a lot!
I have Firefox and Chrome installed on my laptop, but mostly use IE.
i perfer PIE too, it loads instantly!
Opera Mobile 9.5 takes 2-3 seconds to load.
i love Opera mobile 9.5 too, i use it for those sites that PIE cant handle.
After having security problems in the past only with IE, i will never use it again except for special microsoft offices updates. Firefox does the work for me better and more safe. Never had problems with firefox since it is out

I kind of went through that same phase... IE had become completely unreliable. But disabling pop-ups pretty much took care of any such problems, not to mention adding a spyware to the machine doesn't hurt either.

support for low-bandith friendly transcoding proxy in Opera 9.7[Opera Turbo]

edit Feb13: Opera Turbo http://www.opera.com/press/releases/2009/02/12/ does exactly what i want to do. so does toonel (it refuses to run on my device though)
anybody willing to work on this? i looked it up but got nothing as there are no full-fledged bandwidth friendly web browser.
adding the ability for opera mobile to use these proxies (like opera mini) would make opera far more usable to many people that use their phones on hsdpa/3g/edge/gprs
UCweb and opera mini both use a transcoding proxy for all their http traffic. for example loading www.engadget.comm on opera mobile is about 1MB vs only 80KB for the same page on UCweb or 90kb on opera mini. the smaller version have no flash and lower quality pictures (not that important on a phone tiny screens and resolutions)
for me a good compromise is to use two browsers one for wifi (opera mobile with all it cool features) and another for 3g/edge(UCweb). but i rather simplify my life + it would be really good to make use of all the extra featurs of opera mobile when browsing in low badwidth mode
btw
for thoes that dont know it, the advantages of using a browser like opera mini and UCweb:
-significantly cheaper (should be about %80 cheaper)for thoes that dont have flat rate.
-much faster experiance especially for thoes who are on edge.
-better battery life since you can turn off 3G and still maintain a reasonable speed browsing the low badwidth version of the same page on edge/gprs.
-telco blocked sites work
I dunno about a proxy you can configure your browser onto. But I do know:
http://www.skweezer.com/ and the (IMHO) better http://www.mlvb.net/ since its a lot more configurable.
thanks schaggo
your two sites are very usuful to what i want to do indeed. i will play with them some more to see if i can get them to run better on my wvga Xperia
it would however be very useful to to somehow get opera mobile make to use them or a similar site as proxy with a flick of a button.
i wonder if such a simple and useful feature is on the to do list of a future opera mobile version
I havent thought that one through, but couldnt you just set a prefix in the options (opera:config) which goes like http://www.mlvb.net/ which then would preceed all the adresses you enter. No...?
You should check Toonel
http://www.toonel.net/
It is free and it has a windows mobile version (check the downloads page).
I used it a couple of times with opera mobile and it works.
This is abso-excuse me-****ing-lutely great! Seriously, in 3 years I was looking for something like this and today you point it out to me!
Do you maybe want a new car? Or coffee machine? Maybe my wife?
never got toonel to work on my device but i just got to read this
http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=2906
'Opera Turbo" comes to Windows Mobile
Just when you thought browsing couldn’t get any faster, Opera unveils its latest innovation for better browsing, Opera Turbo.
Opera Turbo is a compression solution, similar to its Opera Mini, which will be usable on the desktop with Opera and also for Opera Mobile. It reduced data transfer by up to 80%, thereby speeding up browsing. By taking the processing load onto Opera’s servers it will also allow low-end devices to enjoy a good web experience and fully supports dynamic Web technologies such as Ajax and Flash.
In a press release Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software said "We are living in a time and place where access to the Web should be a universal right to all. Technology has advanced us to the point that we can very nearly access the Internet anytime and anywhere from a growing number of devices,", "As part of Opera’s commitment to provide the best experience on any device, Opera has developed the Opera Turbo solution.”
The service is to be demonstrated at Mobile World Congress, and is to be sold to cell phone carriers and OEM’s as a way to conserve resources and provide end users with a good web experience independent of the hardware or network conditions.

worth a read very short paper

stupid question:
anyone got a proxy i can use with toonel?
You might also be interested in Google Wireless Transcoder. Though not as many options as in mlvb or skweezer, it's definately faster than them.
Google Wireless Transcoder is blocked in my country becuse horny teens might end up using it to watch low quality pixelated heavely compressed dirty pictures. the only reason why skweezer and mlvb still work is because our proxy people did not notice them yet
bad jokes aside, i think a browser with this (transcoding)or similar feature will be a major thing to be supported

The service is to be demonstrated at Mobile World Congress, and is to be sold to cell phone carriers and OEM’s as a way to conserve resources and provide end users with a good web experience independent of the hardware or network conditions.

doesnt opera mobile already support that? by turning it on, the rendering seems to be done elsewhere, although the pictures are still loading slower, this is pretty damn useful!
EDIT: @dexter: wow, the google proxy is damn fast!
Opera mini
I've tried the various site (ie the google's one). They work, quite well, but you loose completely the original format of the web pages. You win the zoom capability of Opera mobile.
But I still think the last version of OperaMini/Jbed is faster and easier.
Really irnterested though in this new Opera Turbo. We will see.

Too many expenses this month and I just got a Touch Pro while still holding on to my XPERIA. I guess you'd have to wait another month or so

bad jokes aside, i think a browser with this (transcoding)or similar feature will be a major thing to be supported

but yeah, youre right, speeding up mobile browsing is a good thing to do, especially if - on top of it - compresses the datastream and you save some bandwith. Theres only one major flaw until now: there is the word b-u-s-i-n-e-s-s in the URL to the whitepaper, seems like its something you have to license and pay bigtime to use it. Hmmm...

Guess not. Enter opera:config in Opera Mobile and in the searchfield which will appear on the page which loads enter turbo and do a search. Tick the checkbox and restart Opera...
i enabled the turbo mode like schaggo said but there is no difference in speed or anything if it does nothing why do they include it
I think the Turbo-option in Opera Mobile has nothing (not yet, at least) to do with the announced Opera Turbo-technology. Because the option is there since like ever, long before Opera announced Turbo. It has to be something different, this option triggers, I have no idea what, though.
This is the Turbo Mode currently available in Opera:
Disable Turbo mode
While this might sound a little bit strange at first to disable turbo mode and present it as a tip to speed up Opera it becomes clear soon. Turbo mode means that Opera pre-draws any image which means that you see part of it although it is not fully loaded. This uses CPU and memory and could increase overall performance especially on slower computers. It should not be noticeable on fast computers though.
Type about:config and enter Turbo into the search field. Disable Turbo Mode and click on save.
