Has anyone tested the battery life during video playback?
I am planning to watch some videos on it during my long flight -about 12 hours- and wondering if the video playback will be 10 hours as stated by SE or will it be tad more since all the radio functions will be turned off, or less.
Thanks.
I think in Flightmode and with Displaylight turned down you might get close to it. Mine takes about 10 % battery for 45 min video (downsized divx to 320x240) with radio on (3G, automatic) and backlight automatic, so about 400 min from 100-10% battery (~6,5 h). So with Flightmode and display backlight adjustments it might be possible.

I had almost the same. But for me it was 10/13% for about 60-70min video.

Could also be, was just a rough guessing, I'm mainly watching TV-Episodes on the PPC. And the X1 just shows 10% differences in battery power, so it would be the same I guess. By the way, this is fantastic, my old PPCs didn't even get close to the power and battery life.

not sure if 10 hrs will be doable but I tested playing 1 hr of live TV streaming that make use of both 3G and video processing, and the battery dropped from 50% to 30% (iirc)

Is the advertised battery life correct ... because i cant seem to get anywhere close to the standby stated hours. Is standby mode equal to shutting off your magician [ie. red button on right side]?
Anyways, with the screen on, but the backlight off, i can only get roughly 5-6 according to my battery indicator [battery pack pro]. Its even less if i use the pocket pc to play music
Just wondering if this is the norm, or should I try to get a new battery? Any tips to conserve precious battery life ... aside from dimming backlights?[/quote]
standy times are always absolute BS, no matter what phone they're plastered to
mine gets about 2 days use with few calls, about an hr of mp3s and perhaps an episode of the chaser's war on everything.

damn, thats awesome.
(1) You just using the main battery? or do you also use the backup internal battery as well?
(2) How frequently are you charging? I mean, do you wait till you battery is low after 2 days to charge? or are you charging it every so often during those 2 days of use?
(3) What kind of battery indicator software or program are you using [if not the one already installed in settings/system/battery]?
(4) Do you leave your screen off or on when you arent using it?
...mine: 9 hrs. wmplayer playing with screen off and 1½ hrs internet browsing; standby? why should i?
Now i bought a 2400 mAh battery instead off 1200 and indeed it's doubled now...
(1) which backup internal battery?
(2) i'm charching as soon as it's below 10%
(3) i use batterymemstatus including overclock
(4) i prefer shutting off the screen especially to prevent touching any button by accident...

1: Just the main battery, the standard 1200mAH that comes with the Mini. btw you can't actually 'use' the internal backup battery - thats just there to prevent the data in your main memory from being wiped out if your main battery goes dry!
2: I usually charge when the battery drops below 20% (ie. the first 'low battery' warning) as if it drops below 10% then certain functions are disabled (accessing your SD card for example )
3: Resco Today Plugin, comes bundled with Resco Explorer. It uses the built-in battery monitor anyway, like most today screen battery monitor plugins.
4: Off. Backlight switches off after 30s of inactivity, screen off after 3 minutes, but I usually press the power button before I slip it back into my pocket.
I use PocketMusic for mp3s, which switches the screen off automatically after 30s (but still keeps playing!), and TCPMP for video - my videos are all encoded in XviD, which requires significantly less processing power than WMV (in TCPMP anyway) while keeping a good compression ratio, meaning less battery drain.
By the way! Make sure that in Settings > Connections > Beam that your PPC isn't set to recieve incoming beams... that can have a noticeable effect on battery life.
This weekend, when my battery got below the 25% mark after a long time of keeping it always between 40 and 100%, I noticed that my device suddenly went black while playing Sudoku.
After 1 minute I could switch it back on, presenting the boot screen. No data was lost. However, as soon as it gets to log on to the cell network, it would shut off again. I had to charge it to at least 30% to be able to get a cell connection again.
Would this be a sign of a dying battery?
Unfortunately yes, it's the start of the death spiral. :?
Mine was worst; my Mini would shut off suddenly at around the 40% level. Upon closer examination of the battery it appears a little bloated in the centre, so I guess all that accumulated heat from charging did kill my battery eventually.
I changed a new battery a few months back and could now go as low as 3% before the device shuts off.

Hey Krinkiespijer,
Where did you get hold of the 2400 mAh battery? Are they expensive?
Cheers,
James
I would bet ebay. ebay.com.au used to be swarming with 2400mAH batteries but they seem to have disappeared .
They are a bit pricey, but I still see a couple of them in ebay. But remember that they're quite large and your Magician wont fit into the stock case.
Also, try tools such as Pocket Hack Master which allow you to underclock the CPU, consuming less power. You can also use em to set CPU speed based on process usage.
Hi
I bought a HTC 4350 just a month ago. I have a problem with battery ( may be it is not a problem ) Battery life is good if I do not make any calls. There is no difference between my old prophet. But if I make calls battery goes very fast ( it goes % 10 in 5 minutes call ) But I am sure battery is good because its performance is very good while using gps, or playing mp3 or something.
So is there a problem with my rom or a hardware problem( my rom is my service providers stock rom ).
Thank for your cooperation..
not sure about 10% in 5min
but using a pda for more power hungry tasks does
mean that it use more power and
the batt last shorter
Hmm it could be the delay the phone shows? Sometimes when I use my phone to watch videos, go on the internet, or listen to music, the batter will maybe go down only 2% in like 30 minutes but when it's on standby and a few minutes go by it'll go down like 4% more when I'm not even using it.
The battery, from what I've seen, has a delay with showing you it's actual battery life. It may be a little higher or lower. If you soft reset the phone it'll show the correct charge.

Yes I tried it. You are right when I soft reset I can see the right battery value, but after soft resetting it still goes % 10 in 5 min.
As a result I can say this I can spend a full battery in a hour by talking on phone but if I watch movie continiously or somethink except phone it goes nearly half a day. So battery is good I think.( it goes very fast if I use GPRS also ) like a problem with radio isnt it...

I just order touch hd , and waiting for it. but I wonder how about battery drain on touch hd.
I got diamond one and it terrible on standard battery.

With my TyTN II (Kaiser) I have the same bad experience, drained in less then 1/2 day. Same with some other devices. But I think this is typical for this device class. With some directives the battery power can be saved:
- disable WLAN when going outwards
- reduce display brightness
- disable/shutdown GPS apps if not used
- buy a car kit ;-)
In my opinion WLAN and the display are the most power consuming parts.

Had a problem trying to charge it in my car for the first time. On a 3 hour journey with about 1/4 battery level left and running pocket player and TomTom when I got home still only 1/4 (or maybe even less) battery power left. I charge it through the USB port in the car stereo. Never had that problem with Polaris under same conditions. Seems ok at home running the same programmes and charging through the mains.
Any one else having trouble charging in a car?
I hope it stands more than one day only. Xperia has better values, my friend told me, it lasts two days more...
friend of mine just got a Xperia. will catechize him...
with heavy usage but turning off WiFi outdoors battery life has been pretty good lasts a day and a half.
In 3G mode, only with two full charges and a bit of heavy usage, cause I only have my HD from last friday, it's been lasting for about 1,5 day. I'm going to test it about one more week and then I'm going to test it in normal GSM mode.
With heavy usage lasting about a day.
2 hours movie
1 hr mp3
30 min calls
10+ text messages
1 hour internet through wifi
12 hrs standby
5 minutes google maps
Maybe 1 hr playing with my new toy (screen lit)
Probably about 2-3 days when my usage goes back to "normal".
I've charged my HD @ 15 o'clock and now is on 72% of battery
opps sorry wrong section, ment to be in the dream not blackstone how do you delete posts?
I have usually a heavy use on it (i.e. too much talking over BT headphone, regular wifi email exchange, rss update etc.).
I used to see it drain easily until I used the advance configuration to fix sd management, connection management etc. For some reason everything was off on mine.
Now with (fairly) regular use it can go one and half day almost.

True, no need for WLAN to be on when on the move. It's the most power consuming antenna in your phone. You can set it to disable if it can't find an access point for 1 minute. Bluetooth is also a killer... These phones are stuffed with radio's, don't turn them on all at once.
Oh, and my phone easily lasts a day, and I tinker with it all the friggin time, and use it quite a bit. But I only activate stuff when I need it, such as wifi, bluetooth, direct push. I rarely use GPS, yes of course this drains your battery in 4 hours, just like when you would place a call or watch a video or browse the web for 4 hours. Anything that uses a lot of radio activity or a lot of screen on-time will drain your battery fast.
I optimized power saving modes with schaps advanced config and turn the thing off at night.
Push email on winmo or apple phones is a joke. The way it requires to keep a GPRS connection alive is ridiculous. Blackberry understands this a lot better.
If you don't use it, you might as well turn GRPS auto attach off using schaps advanced config tool since that too will save a lot of battery time.
Recharged 20 hours ago. Normal use. GPRS Data Connection on, e-mail push each hour (i have flatrate) and i have 85% of battery left.
I am interesting in any ways to make the battery life longer. I have searched and came up with the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=502694&highlight=battery , but I am still asking as I think nobody has actually asked what I want.
As an example, how is it better ... to have a black screen or another colour, or it dosn't matter. I mean, every colour probably consumes a different portion of the battery. Which is the least consuming? Black is my guess, but I am asking
I am interested in these kind of ways. If anyone knows and good links etc. (my TD2 is alive almost 3 days, but still, there is space for improvement)
display on LCD does not effect power consumption (black screen = sawing power was true for old kathot tube displays)
all I can say is that my D2 has battery for a day and a half...somethimes less (but I'm a heavy user), so 3 days doesent sound so bad now

A day and a half!!
Left home at 10:00 with music on using headphones provided not BT.
On the way 30 min of internet via HSDPA and couple of sms. Then tube so no signal. Then another hour of internet via HSDPA plus some sms messages. All the time MP3 on via headphones provided with D2. All in all trip lasted around 2h 15min one way. By the time I got there battery was at 40% so 60% in 2h 15 min. I think there might be something wrong.
I have BT off, wifi off and screen highlight on automatic.
Yeah same thing happens with me ruscik.
Leave my house, hour and a half journey with abit of internet, music constantly and battery nearly goes to around 50% i think.
Its the internet that really sucks the battery life i think cause i managed to watch a video for hour 15min and battery went from about 45% to 3% and i just made it home which i thought wasn't too bad compared to usually going down by 50% with music and internet.

Yep.. Definite improvement in the battery life! Have been on 2.3.4 since morning.
However, I still need to check the drain overnight.
On 2.3.3, the overnight drain for me was atleast 12-13% with Packet Data. WiFi and GPS Off!

You missed to show the "display on time" in the video. I e press display in the battery menu and read the actual time there.
That is the most important thing to judge if this is good or bad.
Do you know the "display on time" in this case?
I typically get 4h "display on time" in one charge with mixed usage. But of course this depends, if you make a lot of call with display off or play mp3's a lot with display off then you get less display on time of course. And the display brightness affects this too of course (I'm using auto brightness)
Yet another battery thread like we don't have enough already lol

3 hours of voice call is good but not great and and its not a deciding factor as the screen was off in those hours. I am not saying your back up is bad but I don't think there is any improvement in 2.3.4 from 2.3.3.

Sounds pretty normal, especially since this is during two days, so you get more idle drain.
Many factors affect this, e g signal strength during voice/data connection and display brightness.
@yajur
have you changed your screen density?
Tried putting Packet Data, GPS and Wi-Fi all Off.
Battery was 25% when I went to bed.
However, when I woke up, poof! phone's switched off!
The battery drain is decent whilst browsing and making calls, but is insanely large on standby. Any suggestions?

It's, at least for me, easily achievable. Light to medium usage, no long game sessions at the ****ter and turning the push exchange to manual does the trick
