Is there a way to shut down apps running in the background. I know to hold home to bring them up.
There are many threads about this you should do a search first.

is there a way to properly turn off an app without using task manager? i read if u hold x it actually does close instead of minimizing but it does not work.
Depends on the app I believe....
...Opera for example. If you click on the menu > quit...it gives you the option of closing or minimizing, if you close it...it actually shuts down.

holding X only works if you have the appropriate mod installed, so no, either a custom taskmanager, or the builtin one from WM.
Anyway, let me give you a word of advice:
1) give a clear title to your threads, "noob question" makes it clear that you're a newbie (as the 1-post counter does as well), but tells nothing at all about your question
2) there's a nifty link in the top right-ish side: "Search"
you want to make sure there closed try BsB Ram Sweeper

Why dont you click the back button?
Btw, this thread is for "Development".
I guess
Sorry for wrong place to post but still, even if i press the back button, that will sometime's take me to some random app i opened half an hour ago and then wont go back any further and then the home button will still do the same thing.
Dont press and hold just press and release
are there any mods out yet that allow for this?
Not that I know of, I believe that requires source code hacks. We don't have the honeycomb source.
is there at least a way to close/kill apps from the running apps button next to the home button? Right now the only way i know of is killing theme from app settings

Now there is a thought! I am new to Android but I think it is completely asinine that there isn't a way to close apps. Even doing it in setting isn't a sure fire way to close apps. Not just apps but how but the settings menu for example? They say those apps are not using resources but if I am done with a game/app then I want to close it.

very good idea.
pull the recent apps and either do a long press, or maybe it could have an "X" to close it
Heya is there any way to closed programs throw the side bar on android 3.2.1?
I cant closed it and it too many apps running on background and it make my tab too slow.
Please help me out

When you are done with an app use the back button to close it, the ones that show in the bar are recent, it doesn't necessarily mean they are running.

I echo his sentiment; you usually close applications by pressing the back button several times or selecting "Quit" or similar from menu. Pressing home button or switching to another application via the recent-menu leaves the app still running. Ie. try to use the back button more often.
Also, if you wish to see actual list of running applications and be able to force quit them, then I could suggest Advanced Task Manager ( https://market.android.com/details?...1bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5hcnJvbi50YXNrTWFuYWdlciJd ) on Android Market; I have that one installed myself and it works just peachy.

this is exactly as how things should be done.. Only difference i use Advanced task killer Widget. But i set its settings to all off.. Especially Auto kill. and when ever i see there are things that decided on there own to run i just tap the widget on home screen and they are gone. You can also long tap and select what you wish to Kill. Its preference to use as to what one you use.. Just be sure it does not run in background. or it will become one of the things your trying to prevent .
Read this to understand why closing these is not unnecessary (other than for privacy reasons)
Task Killers... The Answer from Google & Developers
There are some ROMs that allow for this. However as the person above me pointed ot, its unnecessary. ICS has the built in ability to remove appps from the multitasking menu. I don't know if this suspends the app or something like that, or not.

Not neccesary with ICS
In ICS you just have to slide the aplications on the lists to the sides and they will dissapear.

anyone else noticed that even if you slide to close the app in ics if you go to running services you find the app is in fact still running? and to clarify i am talking apps that are not using outside services like updates/wifi

This is correct. Swiping away the app simply removes it from the list. I learned this when I Home buttoned out of Grand Theft Auto III, swiped to the right and it was still running in the background. Pretty much, it takes a task-killer to absolutely, positively stop an app. But, unless it's effecting your battery life, using wifi, or Bluetooth, there's not a huge need to kill apps. Android has some pretty smart algorithms to manage resources...making task killers unnecessary. You should only kill apps if you're sure they're effecting overall performance.
These apps still exist when I go to settings under apps, but there are no links on the home page to open them. When a notification shows up the app will open when clicked on. I need help bringing these back please.

What launcher are you using? If fire, then try to adb and clear fire launcher data. Don't have the command on hand but search in launcher hijacker thread for the word performance and someone posted it.
Or you might be able to clear fire launcher data from the fire itself. Go into settings, manage apps, all apps or whatever and look for fire launcher or it might be called home pages. Then click on it, clear data and force stop. Reboot and see if it fixes it.
Fixed!
Thank you sir for your wisdom. The Home Pages was the issue. All is well again!
