Hey,
I was using a custom WM6.1 ROM recently, and it had the great option of forcing GSM, instead of auto GSM/3G. This was great for me as I get really poor 3G coverage and have no need for it. Due to the ROM having some bugs I changed over to the official WM6.1 ROM, which seems really good and solid, but I now don't have that option in comm manager. Is there a way I can set this still?
Thanks!
James
hi,
go to phone, menu, options, band tab under select network type change from auto to gsm
Hi Ekksman,
Thanks for that. I had already checked there but didn't realise that wcdma was 3g.
Thanks
James
I have a Samsung Omnia i900 (XCHG5 updated to the latest J2 firmware - Portugal).
Everything works perfectly except that it doesn't switch automatically to 3G when 3G is available. It just stays in "Edge" mode all the time. If I select WCDMA in the Band selector, it will use 3G but not Edge, of course. The Auto mode seems to not work.
Here in Brazil I'm a subscriber of "Vivo" which uses the 2100MHz band for 3G.
What I tried:
*#1546792*#
and select WCDMA first in the Network order. It keeps the same behaviour. The Auto mode just chooses Edge, even when 3G is available.
Any hints? Has somebody experienced the same issues? Or does your Omnia switch between 3G and Edge without problems?
Thank you!
Well, this is really strange, but I installed Bandswitch:
http://www.smartphonemag.com/cms/blogs/3/tutorial_quickly_switch_between_3g_umts
and it doesn't work. Then I removed and restarted the mobile. For my surprise, now it's with the correct behaviour... First it tries 3G, then Edge... and switch as expected...
Whos knows if Bandswitch did something to Windows Mobile? I don't know... Anyway, I'd like to register it in case someone has the same problem.
SOLVED!
After many attempts, I finally solved this. If someone has the same problem, I'd like to register the solution:
1) type on the phone: *#197328640#
2) [1] Debug Screen
3) [8] Phone Control
4) [7] GCF Test Mode
5) [1] GCF Test Mode
5) [2] WCDMA R5 - HSDPA only
6) BACK and the option GCF Test Mode must be [ON].
I tried it for Rogers - still no 3G I guess it does not really switch bands, i.e. still tries to finds 3G on 2100, not 850/1900...
Anyone succeeded?

If your Omnia is from Europe, it will just work at 2100MHz, not 850MHz for 3G.
The american one will work only at 850MHz 3G.
Hello Dâniel Fraga,
I have the same issue with my Omnia. I also use Vivomad in Brazil.
I was trying your solution with *#197328640# to access the Root Menu. I don't know why but this code do not work for me. When I try I receive a message "Failed". Can be because the ROM I am using.
Do you know another way to access the Root Menu?
Thanks for the help.
is really useful for me
After some time I was able to access the menu that Daniel said, but the procedure did not work for me.

Hi praico. Did you find the "GCF Test Mode" option? It must be turned to "on".

Yes Daniel, I found that and it is turned on. It is really strange, sometimes it seems to work and sometimes not. I will test it more and I'll let you know.
Thanks for the help.....
Hello Daniel,
Can I make another question? Are you able to make a call when your omnia is in EDGE? Today I found out that mine does not work. Even with a very good EDGE signal my call never complete.
Thanks for the help.
After struggling all the weekend with this problem, I found a solution:
Cause:
Had a flashed ROM of the i900 (the phone part of this ROM seeks only 3G at 2100mhz)
Solution:
Flash the Phone part only, extracted from a i900L ROM (which works at 850/1900mhz)
Now I got my 3G signal back
This is the Phone.bin I used: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ERQ6368K
would you be able to tell me how to ''Flash the Phone part only'' i'm a newbie
thank you in advance
Don't worry it's working now.
Thanks a million for the solution.
i have a same problemç my phone is toshiba g500 wm5.0ç please help . i select "auto" in mode selection(in 3g area) but i get Edge alltime..
Omnia in 850 Mhz band
I think my Omnia is only for 3G 2100 MHz and in my country we have 3G 850 MHz is there any way to make it work???
flash the phone
I have the same problem I have the phone only searching for 3G 2100 and I need it to look for 850, I downloaded the file mentioned, how do I flash ti as you mention???
can't find a thread here, but can I switch off 3G on a HD2? Optus in Sydney has no 3G reception sometimes. But the HD2 still thinks it's on. It can call out, but nobody can call in (gets msg 'phone is off'). Data/sms don't come in.
Optus admits it's their 3G, solution is to use 2G. I can't find the option
Touch tools
Touch tools will add an extra slider to your connections screen or if you look through the very first sticky in this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638 under tip#58 there is a cab that just installs that.
turn off 3g

go to settings>wireless controls>phone>band then select GSM instead of Auto under Network type
i have turned off 3g on my phone to save me some battery
ps, tap the phone icon itself under the settings menu and not the slider (off/on) thing
I recieved this myself from HTC Support..
a simple program to do just that, turn off 3G.
No need to install, just put the file on your phone and run it (the .exe, not the .zip d: )

Is it a toggle? or does it just turn off 3G?
EDIT: This is just like the regular Data Connection Enabler / Disabler program at XDA.
Is there a registry entry to do the equivalent of what the 3G slider switch in the Comm manager does?
If anyone wants to do this (Set Netwrok to GSM) during XDA_UC through the registry
HKLM \ Software \ OEM \ UMTS
OpMode: 1
Supported Values
0 - Auto
1 - GSM
2 - WCDMA
Band Selection can also be done. Just look for the Folder "BandSelection" under UMTS.
You need to edit the value of BAND
The effect of this can be seen only after a soft reset or manually switching the network type or the bands. However the indicators (in the Comm Manager or in the Band Selection Utility) will reflect the change immediately even though the radio does not switchover to the desired Network / Band.

I support cezzarmicu with this, i do that often when i need my phone to stay longer without shutting off especially when i'm outdoors for longer times!
Simple procedure!
I'm located in Toronto, Canada and recently subscribed to Mobilicity.
I recently got a T-Mobile samsung vibrant and I'm having this problem where if I lose my mobilicity connection (ie in the subway) I have to reboot the phone to get the connection back.
If I don't reboot the phone will not reconnect to mobilicity network.
Is there a network setting I need to do to get it to connect automatically whenver I get disconnected? Or maybe there's a fix for this somewhere?
The vibrant is not rooted and has stock apps right now.

I would suggest turning the radio off ( airplane mode ) and then turning it back on, this should force your phone to reconnect to mobilicity. It would be considerabbly faster and more convienent than rebooting your phone entirely... The fastest way to turn off the radio is to press and hold the power button until the power options menu pops up and hit the airplane mode selection.
Let me know if this works for you.

Thanks for your reply.
I've tried this with mixed results. Sometimes I would be able to connect to mobi's network sometimes it doesn't. If it does connect, it's only for voice and not 3G.
I've also tried manually selecting the network. It takes a minute or so to search networks and then sometimes mobi's network doesn't even appear.
Rebooting it works everytime though so there's something amiss going on here.
I tried a few things:
Coming out of subway (prolonged disconnect): The vibrant gets stuck in "Searching" mode. It does not lock into Mobi's network at even after turning on/off the airplane mode (turns off all wireless). The only way I get connected back is to power off the phone.
Coming out of basement or elevator (intermitent disconnect): I tend to lose my 3G connection when this happens. Power on/off restablishes the 3g connection. I get mixed results with the airplane mode being toggled on/off.
So right now my settings are:
- WCMDA Only in both the Mobile Network settings and the testing menu (*#*#4636#*#*)
- Manual network connection to Mobilicity
Still getting disconnects anybody with other suggestions?
thanks
Does anyone have a solution to this problem? It seems to be only happening with the mobilicty SIm card. SOMEONE HELP!!
I'm having the same problem. Is it a network problem or a phone problem? I'm using T-Mobile Galaxy S Vibrant and Mobilicity. Let me know if you guys have the solution. Thanks.

Looking for input on this as well please.
I have vibrant on mobilicity as well, had this problem on stock JFD, flashed to any froyo roms and didn't have this problem again (currently using macnut R12 + EB stock kernel)
o NICE... its all in the radio... thanx so much... i'm going to install the JK6 custom rom.... hopefully that has the fix as well...
I am actually re locating to Toronto for work so that is good to know.
Out of curisosity, I actually just purcahsed my phone and I am unlocking it at this moment. Do you know if you have to have a sim card inside the phone while inlocking? Or just after to get the key? Thanks!! I see to be having problem running the script, so I was just wondering.
I use to have an app called telinfo that would allow me to disable lte so I can use 3g only but it no longer works on my note 3. Anyone know of anything that works to disable LTE only or force 3g only?
if you have root, I recall that if you download Advanced Signal Status... Click on additional info, then device information.... Above the turn off button, there is a selection box, select CDMA and you will get 3G only
Boom! Thank you! Been installing apps left and right with no success but that one works.
that works for me too - Thanks
