automatic edge/gprs/walk'n'web connections - Touch GSM General

I recently bought a used T-Mobile MDA Touch. Naturally it has T-Mobile finger prints all over it. If I active an application that requires the Internet, the phone connects to edge or gprs. It notifies me but doesn't need my permission. This can happen with my attention else where and since I am on a prepaid it can cost a lot of money that returns no value.
Any ideas or suggestions? Perhaps there's a switch or a or hack that would require my input before proceeding to these costly alternative?
Thanks in advance.

Schap's Advanced Configuration Tool can disable connections without rebooting system - if you need GPRS, you just start ACT, go to connections settings and tap connection you want to enable. When you don't need it, you disable it again. Works perfect for me

Thank you! Works for me, too. )

New, another invention: after blocking connection this way if you want to use it, you don't have to re-enable it. Just install Opal Comm Manager and set your connection as default in Settings -> |Connections| -> Connections. Tapping Data connection in Comm Manager will connect it, but other apps won't be able to do it Tested on Onyx 4.0.

Sorry I cant see how to do this. I have installed Advanced Configuration Tool 3.3 and disabled GPRS, and I have Opal Comm Manager installed, but latter will not let me switch GPRS back on.
Can you clarify exactly how/where to "set the connection as default" so that I will not need to go back into Advanced Configuration Tool to re-enable it every time?

how to disable GPRS

Any way to disable gprs in the handset. Some of my applications are using gprs for updating and my service provider is charging me like anything. I have wifi and want to use that alone for data... is there a setting somewhere which will help me in disabling GPRS
i tried the nodata ( nogprs) application but its not working for me
Gopu
Do you need GPRS at all? If not, go to Settings->Connections->Connections->Manage existing and delete everything.
Setting > Connection and select "my work network" as internet connection instead of your provider's one.
You can change it back anytime you need to really use GPRS

In the registry you’ve got the following key:
HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A38-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\Connections
Export this key to enable GPRS later on.
Go inside your data connections and you’ll find a key, “Enabled." This key has a value 1, change this for every connection to 0.
There, you're done.
You could try to go to the Comm Manager and disabling "Phone" and activating Wi-Fi.
Hope this helps!
Try the Moto Toggle Widget on the market. Requires root, but works

Blocking Data On HD

I recently got the HD, but since I live in Canada I figured it wasn't worth it to get a data plan (Can only use EDGE and prices are outrageous). As such, I'm wondering if there are any apps or methods to block data.
I would still want to be able to use wifi for internet and such, but stop EDGE from working. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!
Goto the Comm Manager and turn Data Connection off? Don't know what that does to wifi which has a seperate on/off? That failing, could you not disable data from your operator?
what works for me is to set networks for automatic internet access to "company network":
Start - settings - connections tab - connections icon - extended tab - select networks - automatic internet access => set to company network
I have a german device so had to guess english names ... be warned.
if you make the change and try to update weather data you should get an error.
Set it back to your phone provider should make it connect (and charge you) again.
I called my carrier and asked for data transfer to be blocked.
Start - Settings - Connections
Tap the Connections icon
There you might see an entry for your mobile provider - in my case I see
"Vodafone Live"
- Add a new modem
- Edit my proxy server
- Manage existing connections
Tap 'Manage existing connections'
You will see a list of modems (in my case I see 'Vodafone Live')
Tab and hold the modem
Choose delete
Anyone tried MoDaCo's NoData utility?

dwnload tweaks 3.3. There is an option to disable one or al of your data connections.
You need to install compact framework 3.5 first (google it if unsure).

How to disable GPRS connection failure notification?

I have asked my phone company to disable my GPRS access already and I have a wireless router to use Wi-Fi. However, I must admit that the constant attempts by Windows Mobile to connect my GPRS which always result in a failure notification is rather annoying.
Is there a method to disable these notifications?
Reg edit
There's a registry edit that will disable the automatic connection, or if you have advanced configuration tool you can do it there. If you don't have advanced configuration tool you can download it here.
I use pre-pay, and as the data charges are high, I only use wifi. I use an app called nodata. It lists your GPRS connections, and allows you to disable them so that they won't be used. I got this app from crc's device update, but I'm sure you could find it easily.

Oh, I recently upgraded my phone's OS to Schap's WM6 Pro, so it came with the OS. I did as you asked (disabled the auto-attached for GPRS), but unfortunately, it didn't seem to work as it continued attempting to connect, and the notification still appeared.
Thank you to you for responding. I appreciate the help!

You mean MoDaCo NoData? Oh yes, I installed the app, and used it to toggle the GPRS off, and you're right. It worked perfectly and the message does not appear to be coming up anymore! Thank you so much for you help!

Edge Time out?

I'm using EDGE on TMo and everytime i use it (Opera/google maps/email) when i'm done and close out of those programs i have to manually go into Comm Manager and switch the Data Connection off. Is there a feature that I can have it turn off automatically when not in use?

Advanced Config Tool has an option to choose how much time connection can stay idle, after that time it will disconnect.

Deactivate data connection on HD2

On my Diamond, I had a handy little application called NoData which deactivated data connections so that I didn't get charged for using mobile internet by mistake.
Is there any way to do the same thing on the HD2?
Thx.
I am also looking for an app that can do this.
I'm off abroad in a couple of weeks and I am already having nightmares about the bill I may have when I return if I can't find a way to deactivate the data!

Just use the same app
Grtz,
Degake
there is a app out there called...................nodata
oh, are you sure it works on the HD2?
nodata works fine but i use bsb tweaks to disable data connections manually before crossing the border so i can enable it just in case
Since I have no data plan with my carrier i disable connections not referring to WIFI alltogether, I just go to Settings, connections, menu, connections, advanced, select network, and put "work network" (or something, I have it in italian) to both.

there is a vey simple way to deactivate the data connection: long press the on/off key and you will get a little menu: one of the menu items is deactivate data connection. Press it and it's done.

That terminates it, but it doesn't stop it coming back on when an app tries to use it.
Is there a reason that no-one has suggested airplane mode?
no cab needed, the answer is on the HTC site:
How do I disable my 3G/GPRS Data Connection?
Follow the steps below to ensure that your phone will never connect to a GPRS/3G Data Connection.
1. Go to Start > Settings > Menu > All Settings > Connections > Connections
2. Tap Add a new modem connection > then under Select a modem, select Celluar Line (GPRS) > Name the Connection "Offline" >Tap Next.
3. In the Access point name text box input "Offline" and tap Next.
4. On the next page tap Finish.
5. On the second Connections Menu, tap Manage existing connections and select "Offline" then click OK.
Re-enable the data connection if you want to connect to the internet via 3g/Edge.
1. From the home screen, slide to the Settings tab, Wireless Controls > Data Connection.
2. Select your Country and Operator
3. Tap OK.
4. On the subsequent screen, tap Yes.
The phone will automatically configure itself with the appropriate settings.
Note: When disabling the connection in this way, your phone may report errors when trying to connect to "Offline." The error is caused by the phone being unable to connect to a data source due to the settings, and is normal.
