In a last-ditch attempt to get one garanteed delivery before the weekend, I ordered two xperia's, one from the UK and one from a US reseller (selling european X1i's nonetheless).
My question is this: my 3g band isn't supported (rogers) and I was wondering if the US version will use the same radio chip and what are the possibilities of getting an update which will enable this additional band (US1?)?
Thanks!

Read this a couple of times, was a tad confused!
Are you in the UK or US ?
Which version of the X1 does not have 3G? or are you saying you don't get 3G signal where you are?
Who is Roger?

Answered several times already. The X1i does not have 850MHz UMTS. No one has managed to get a radio ROM on any HTC device to bring over the UMTS frequencies.
If you want it to work on 850 you'll need the X1a

so x1a rom on an x1i will not work to enable UMTS 850?? are there any links to x1a roms? I thought it wasn't even released yet...
Had this same problem with an omnia AND an n96 now its starting to get to me with the xperia since I really wanted this phone ;\
The OS rom has nothing to with the radio. It may add some options to radio settings, but it does not change the radio itself. The only practical difference is it may or may not make WM faster.
You can flash an X1a radio rom onto an X1i, but it still will not enable UMTS 850. The two radios are physically different (whether it's the microcode or the whole chip), and cannot be changed via software/rom flash. So many people have been trying with the Diamond, Raphael, etc, all unsuccessful; no reason to believe it will be any different with the X1. The only practical difference is it may or may not improve battery life and/or reception.
The X1a is the only one with a UMTS 850-capable radio chip, so if you need UMTS 850 your only option is the X1a.

Ok, so its a different radio chip... I remember the omnia i900 and i907 had identical radio chips as per specs but the former had the 850 disabled. Was hoping sony made the hardware identical and only differed on the radio rom.
Thanks for clearing it up
Anybody want two xperias?
I'd like a black X1i, but only if I can find someone willing to buy my TPro

Anyone can dump their Telstra rom here to share, that would be great for people who are in Canada using Touch HD, Thanks.
I just tried...
"Even Flashed the Telstra rom, still cant get the 850 3G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" but
the display of model have changed from T8282 to T8285
You can get it from the htc website..

Really? I am running this rom and it has telstra all over it... pretty restrictive to be honest
that's because you have to put your devices serial number and it picks the best ROM suited to the device. I have "RUU_BlackStone_Telstra_WWE_1.21.841.1_Radio_52.57.25.30_1.10.25.25_Ship.exe" version if your interested? I'll provide a download link when I get home from work...
Excuse my ignorance...but why would you want a telstra ROM in Canada?

People are hoping that the Telstra model will work with North American 3G, and that there's some way to extract that functionality via software.
I have yet to hear a consensus on whether it's possible or not, though. One poster will say that without a doubt it's impossible, that lack of 3G is 100% hardware based, and another will say that is most definitely is a software/radio ROM issue.
I can't wait for some sort of verdict.
i know what u mean if it aint the t8285 model it won't work with 850 umts...

850 on hd t8282
I'm not sure how or waht the difference is between 8282 and 8285. However, I have a 8282 bought in Australia from, I believe, a reputable firm. While it didn't come with the Telstra Rom it was advertised as being NextG compatable. I get full download speed (compared to my Diamond) and the H symbol is showing most of the time. I had always thought that the 850 compatability was more to do with Radio's than hardware. Especially when this phone has been sold in both markets for a while now. But maybe I'm just imagining the speed. The HD is not yet as good as the Diamond indoors out on the fringes of Melbourne where I live. But it is as good as most Nokias.
well i guess testing it wont hurt. i would want to give it a try too.

Yours originally is T8285 but they flashed the T8282 rom, thats why it shows that is T8282.
My phone is T8282 after i flashed the Telstra rom it become T8285.....but still not compatible of the NextG
The "H" is HSDPA and isnt 850 dependant. Just means that it goes to 7.2/2.0 which again isnt 850 dependant. NextG, like North America is 850mhz. You can have HSDPA on any 3G network (Optus, 3, Voda etc) which use 1800/2100 if im not mistaken?
8285 is the NextG/850 version. Nearly all Telstra-sold phones are 850 versions. Have to be very careful as they have different Radio Hardware
Hi guys, I don't know if this is a basic question but I have to ask it since I haven't find an answer yet...
Can I modify the HSDPA/UMTS band via ROM or SPL update?
I bougth a HTC T-mobile myTouch (1700/2100 MHz bands, UMTS/HSDPA) but later I realized that here in CHILE my provider uses the 850/1900 band for 3g .
So, can I do somethig to make it work here or is it a matter of hardware?
Thanks

No you cant change ur radio bands with software, its a hardware issue and im afraid your stuck with what you got, even flashing a new radio wont change things . . . sorry
it's too different versions of the qualcomm cpu's which makes the band difference
it's hardcoded inside the cpu
You should have bought the Canadian/Rogers version of the phone.
Fvcking HTC builds 3 versions of the phone (mytouch, rest of world, Canada) and people like you and me get fvcked. We have to pay an extra $150 to get the canadian version.
Let it be a lesson: do NOT buy HTC! Acer, Dell, Apple ... they all build phones that work everywhere. NOT HTC.

Actually the CPU (Qualcomm MSM7201a) is capable of supporting five different UMTS frequency bands, however only three at once. Those bands again are indeed preset by the built-in RF chips, so there is no chance of changing frequencies.
Here's the datasheet of the MSM7200 (identical to the MSM7201a in terms of RF support) with an overview of possible RF chip configurations at the bottom of page 3: http://www.ent.eet-china.com/PDF/2007FEB/DTCOL_2007FEB15_AVDE_RFR_AN_01.pdf

Whether a specific band is supported or not in a particular RF topology also depends on the type of RF amplifiers coupled with the baseband IC. Traditionally HTC has been using universal amplifiers for 2G/2.5G hence all recent phones support GSM/GPRS/EDGE on any frequencies. Due to Qualcomm vs. Broadcomm patent lawsuits, they had to stop using universal amplifiers for 3G around 2006, hence most modern phones only support WCDMA/UMTS frequencies that they have individual amplifiers for.
I think it's not HTC specific, any vendors using Qualcomm MSM basebands are doing this as well. So the bottomline is - in most cases it's a hardware issue. In some rare cases (when universal or multi-frequency WCDMA amplifier is installed) frequencies are disabled in software. I can't recall any HTC device that would have this kind of software only limitation.

Hey is there a spell checker in this xda forum?
my apologies
I love my phone
if you are on a pc most internet browsers these days got their own spellchecker
Spell check thanks
You know its amazing what some people consider "most" Web Browsers
I was thinking "largest" web browser (Internet Explorer 8.XX on XP)
Spell checking is not natively included, so all my checking has been with
local docs or remotely using the web pages own checker for web based mail and forums.
So I started thinking no wonder this guys name starts with "Rude"
But I looked around and there is a free plug-in for IE called ieSpell.
I seldom bother with the other browsers so I can't say if
spell checking is included right "out of the box" in them either.
but I just installed ieSpell here and it hyphenated "plug-in" nice and easy
Thanks
when you are right you are right

Ok. Im a little new for all the different terms with a cell phone radio and all that. But theres something that i just cant seem to get a grip on. The US HD2 supports only the 1700/2100mhz for UMTS. Which means all of us ATT users cant have the use of 3g and i believe it hinders the use of the HD2 here on ATT. Theres a few things I cant seem to understand and some things I need technical expertise on:
Ive been reading about the hd2 and i found that the cellular modem is built inside the snapdragon processor. (found that from qualcomm and on pdadb.net)
If the processor is the same for both models why cant it accept the umts850 and 1900 mhz bands?
Answer to that: Im told its hard-coded on the 3g chips and cant be changed.
Question to that answer: Why is there a ROM update for the Dopod HD2 that in fact ADDS support for the UMTS900 MHZ band? If its hard-coded on the chip then why is there a software update for it? Can that update be somehow modified to add umts 850/1900/etc band support. its just some of the specs and things ive found online (mostly here at XDA) just dont seem to add up.
My overall summary:
Processors are both the QSD8250 which supports ALL GSM types (by that i dont mean all freq. bands.) So the cellular modem inside the phones are the same.
Different basebands on the different models when its "hard-coded" on the phones themselves.
Why a software update adding support for another baseband freq?
Someone please elighten me. I just think that theres more to this whole baseband thing than we know since we seem to believe one thing, but theres other official work that disproves those claims.
I use:
TMO HD2 (HardSPL'd and unlocked to AT&T)
WM ROM: Omega XT V14
Android ROM: Mdeejay's Froyo Sense 3.1
Radio: 50.4 version.
The reason the Dopod HD2 got that software update is because that band was always there, but WinMo couldn't utilize it. What you have read about the processor being locked to band X/X is completely correct. The T-Mobile US HD2 will only ever support 1700/2100 because thats what revision of Snapdragon it's using. The Dopod model is using a different revision and always had support for the 900 band. The only way the US HD2 will ever get 3G on ATT is if ATT switches to the 1700 band, or if the processor is upgraded. If you really wan't 3G that bad, I would look into getting an international HD2 as some of them do indeed support ATT 3G.
Ok but if all 3 (us,Telstra, and dopod) use the qsd8250b then wouldnt they all be able to add support for other frequencies that the 3g chip can use or is it that there's different antenna types for different regions or somethin?
Sent from my HTC HD2
What I mean is that, when they are makeing the processors for each board revision, IE the US and EU boards, they enable or disable the frequencies at a hardware level. You can't just flip a switch and have that feature turned on, its not that simple. The processor type is the QSD8205B, but there are many different internal revisions. The antenna's for GSM networks are more or less the same, no matter what the frequency.
ahh see thats what i was thinking... (darn it got my hopes up for nothin) I do wanna get the international but i dont have 500+ to spend and i doubt i can trade in this hd2 for the telstra one, but boy would it be nice (we have a 3g microcell and id like to be inside my house to be able to make a call, even though inside i have 2 bars sometimes and it wont call at all)
Dang it ATT. You and your messed up networks.....

Do you know how much this slows down the speed / performance of the T-Mo HD2?
I got an HD2 specifically to move away from the lag so many winmo devices have and never looked back since. I'm on ATT and it would definately be nice to have 3G.
okay so i reacently read on engadget that att bought qualcomms 700mhz band or soemthign like that. would that mean we get 3g or soemthing liek that?
Most likely 4g. (Why would they want a second 3g network) And if thats the case, there is NO hd2 anywhere which can handle 700mhz,

No it is not, the T8585 is the Euro version of the HD2 (512 LEO)
From SamSamuel on XDA
T9193 is the telstra and uses

T8585 is the regular HD2 and uses
GSM 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS 900/2100MHz
Not sure what the model number of the tmous is (PB81120 is the model ID) and it works on

Hi
I have recently purchased an HTC Wildfire A3335. For those of you don't know, this is a special version of the Wildfire which has a UMTS 850/2100 Radio. Anyway this phone seems only to be available heavily branded through an Australian operator, Telstra.
Due to the hideousness of the branding, I naturally wanted to get rid of it. This was pretty easy-- Cool-- I now have an unbranded wildfire A3335.
Now, when it was flashing (using an HTC RUU exe) I noticed that it was "Reflashing the radio". I freaked out. I know this phone has a special radio in it and of course the unbranded RUU is for the 900/2100 UMTS version (A3333).
So as expected the phone has lost its very special 850MHz UMTS and now only works at 2100MHz (I doubt the phone has suddenly gained the ability to use 900MHz UMTS as it has the wrong chips in it)
The Radio image for this phone is available inside the Telstra RUU on shipped-roms.
My question. Is it possible to extract the radio image out of that and flash it in with the rest of the unbranded system? And hopefully get my 850MHz UMTS back. Currently it appears that the answer to this is no due to the lack of signing?
Current HBOOT: 0.80-0007
Current ROM HTC Standard (Eclair 2.1) 1.37
You can't lose or gain any frequencies by flashing the radio, it's in the hardware...
OK firstly, I did lose 850MHz when flashing the standard image on, so you definitely can lose (but never gain)
The Radio PHY in the phone will be split into two parts, the 2100MHz part and the 850MHz part (or a 900MHz part).
So on the normal wildfire radio image, there's a driver which is likely compiled to drive a 2100/900 radio, and when we run that image on the 2100/850 phone, 2100 remains working because this part of the chip is identical. The 850MHz part dies completely because this driver is not expecting it.
I know how lazy microcode developers are - it's very rare for anyone to go to the effort to make microcode images to support two subtley different chips, instead they will compile two versions of the microcode with subtle changes for each one. Only one bit in a register need be set wrong and the whole lot comes crashing down!
Now there could be a scenario where the radio is a 100% hardware solution, and there is no microcode for the UMTS radio, in which case there's a better chance that having the wrong radio image is not an issue, as the chips themselves are more autonomous. But then - What does the radio image do? In my experience of working with 802.11 Radio PHYs: Not likely. These chips are almost always highly software driven and must be running the correct code to fully function.
Okay so it looks like I just became the "expert" on this one and can now answer my own question.
It is possible to restore the original Telstra radio image, without rebranding the phone using the Telstra RUU.
This is what I did:
1) Download Telstra RUU from shipped-roms
2) Extract radio.img using this process: http://lukasz.szmit.eu/2010/04/extracting-rom-files-from-htc-android.html
3) Repacked radio.img into an update.zip
4) Signed update.zip using http://android.modaco.com/content/software/313829/pc-tool-zip-signer-v1-1/#entry1348449
5) Manually added com/google/android directory into META-INF directory in ZIP file (Copied from someone else's radio image.
6) Flashed image using clockworkmod "update sdcard" menu (unrevoked had already installed clockworkmod)
Done! I've got my 850MHz back again!
I've included the update.zip with the Telstra wildfire radio image here: http://xpander.inaxeon.com/data/files/update.zip
It's interesting looking around the various forums, I think a lot of people have been willy nilly flashing the wrong radios onto their special 850MHz devices then not fully understanding why their phones are without 3G coverage a lot of the time. Oops!
Interesting, last time I checked the radios were identical. I must have missed something. I'll try cross flashing the Telstra A3335 radio on the 900/2100mhz A3333 and see what happens, 3G up here in Canada runs on 850/1900, getting 3G on one of the 2 bands would be nice.
Edit: It's the same as the other radio of the same version 13.45.55.24/3.35.15.31 , did a checksum against the HK_CHT one (cid HTC__622, a A3333)
Maybe the "H" in the version have something to do with the frequencies? ie: Radio_13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10 from the Froyo WWE rom.
Did you not read my second message!
Unless you have an A3335 flashing the Telstra radio is going to make your phone even worse!
The full solution for 850MHz UMTS requires:
A) The right hardware: (Wildfire A3335)
B) With the right software: The Telstra "Radio_13.45.55.24_3.35.15.31" is currently the only radio image in existance which can correctly drive the A3335, and in no circumstances should be flashed on anything other than the A3335!
Likewise - If you have an A3333
Do not flash the Telstra radio image on it, as it is the wrong code. You'll end up losing your 900MHz UMTS in the process (OK so that doesn't matter too much in Canada)
To say it even simpler:
Every radio image except Telstra is OK for use on the A3333
The A3335 must be running the Telstra radio image
Telstra Radio_13.45.55.24_3.35.15.31 is a special piece of software for a special piece of hardware!
EDIT: Kwen has checksumed the A3333 and A3335 images of Radio_13.45.55.24_3.35.15.31 and found them to be identical. This confirms that this paticular version supports both 850/2100 and 900/2100 phones, whilist newer versions do not. See more recent posts.
i have a telstra wildfire which i have wildpuzzle v.08 running on, with putting a new rom on i would presume i have a different radio, am i correct. yet i can get 3g and wcdma/hsdpa no problems. or am i confusing myself
Thanks for this. I'm going to keep the update.zip safe just incase.
I've just imported an A3335 to use on the Telecom XT network here in NZ and I just flashed it with DK's rom (shame that I'm still stuck with the Telstra splash screen).
Although 850MHz is the primary band Telecom uses for their network they also have 2100MHz fallback in my location, so I'm not 100% sure what band the phone is running on.
Is there a service menu or an app on the marketplace I can use to check the band for peace of mind?
Thanks again.

Telstra Radio_13.45.55.24_3.35.15.31 is a special piece of software for a special piece of hardware!

It made no difference, couldn't tell if I lost the 900Mhz, couldn't get the 850Mhz for sure.
I tried playing in the Field test menu to switch between GSM Only to WCDMA Prefered/Only and the Band selection menu and completly lost access to GSM, it was stuck on WCDMA Only, had to do a nand restore (nothing to do with the radio version)
I'm not sure if the Radio_13.45.55.24_3.35.15.31 is exclusive to the A3335, most of the roms uses it:
Vodafone SPA
H3G ITA
HTC WWE
HTC Asia India
HTC Asia WWE
HTC Asia HK CHT (that's my phone and it'ss a A3333)
H3G UK
HTC Asia TW
HTC FRA Bouygues
HTC WWE Tesco
Vodafone DE
How did you find out which band your Wildfire was using? (or did you just not have any signal?)

Pretty easy. My operator has no GSM (at all) or 2100MHz sites where this phone is most commonly used. When the alternate radio was flashed on, the phone flat out lost all connectivity to the network. It only returned when the phone was driven to a place known to have 2100MHz coverage. That was a pretty damning and poignant confirmation.
About the versions of the Radio, When I was first considering flashing the RUU I had already been concerned about the radio image and checked the version. I saw that it was used in other A3333 targetted images so assumed that the radio images were not phone specific. Turns out I was wrong.
What would be interesting is to checksum compare Radio_13.45.55.24_3.35.15.31 from Telstra vs. other images. If they are identical, then we know that this particular version supports both style of radios, in which case it is safe for both versions. The reason I've always been qualifying that version "Telstra" is in the fear that they are different despite the identical version number.
Short of actually being a hard core hacker or HTC engineer, It's a bit hard to tell really. All one can really do is share their experiences.
I can confirm thier identical checksum (I checked against another one - not all the versions lol)
another special version of the WF
Hey man, I have a wildfire which runs on these frequencies GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and HSPA/WCDMA 850/1900 MHz.
I was going to flash a stock RUU till I read your post, so I wanted to thank you for saving my precious 3g!

What the heck model is that!
I understand HTC may have a provision for 850/1900 (Model A3334) But as far as I knew that never went into production due to lack of interest from operators. Or is this a fruity variant of one of the new Wildfire S models?
EDIT: As bought to my attention by juanchotolas - it appears that the 850/1900 A3334? (Awaiting confirmation of the exact model number) may exist after all. It leads a low key existance in Latin America sold under an obfuscated difficult-to-google-for name. It's called "Desire A" but it's really a Wildfire. Here's the little beasty: http://www.htc.com/la/product/htc-desire-a/overview.html

I've spent many an hour searching for such an application and one does not seem to exist. Post one here if you find one.
The phone I've been working on was a present for my sister is also used on Telecom XT, I bought it due to the spectacularly average range of phones available at the time through Leading Edge, hence my burning desire to remove the Telstra branding.
You can imagine how incredibly silly I felt when it arrived, she powered it up and it couldn't connect to XT. The thing that's made it extra frustrating is that I live in the UK and was originally working on the phone from here. The UK only has 2100MHz UMTS so couldn't test properly before posting. I've had to do all of this reflashing over the phone and with remote access from the other side of the planet!
Anyway, If you flash the most recent 2.1 RUU (not 2.2) then reflash the radio I posted, you can achieve a fully unbranded A3335 on XT.
You're fortunate to have 850MHz UMTS over there, No one offers sub 1GHz 3G here and it stinks! I used XT for a few weeks while I was back for Xmas and it was an amazing service (If you can get over the cost). You can't have service like that on any network here. Green with envy.

I was attracted to DK's rom because he made mention that the radio was left untouched (or optional to flash). So I'm fairly certain I'm running the original Telstra radio. I just can't be certain.
Would like to flash the 2.1 RUU and then back to DK again to get rid of the splash screen but for me, all that risk isn't worth the vanity. Like you, the phone isn't mine. It was bought for someone else but I'm responsible for its up-keep.

I'm all about the vanity! I even replaced its plasticwork to remove the logos from the case and posted it in a London issue Wildfire box (had one spare). There is not a single Telstra logo anywhere on this puppy! I think I'd be pretty comfortable in assuming that it's the only fully software/physically unbranded unit in the country- pretty satisfied with that!
The ROM and the Radio are two different components. You should never overwrite a radio by flashing just a ROM.
There's only two (maybe 3) ways you'll ever end up overwriting the Radio on an HTC phone:
1) Flashing an HTC RUU
2) Explicitly flashing a radio update with Clockworkmod.
3) It is theoretically possible for ROMs to include Radio updates but I've never seen a third party ROM contain a radio image. With maybe a small number of exceptions, ROM developers generally aren't going to risk deploying radios with their releases.
Of course you can easily find out by examining the contents of the META-INF/com/google/android/update-script file in the ZIP archive. If there's any mention of "Radio" in there then avoid it on exotic models like A3335
-strike off. the radio build might be different - there might be radios with partial coverage-

whats so special about sub ghz 3g? Anyway werent o2 meant to be starting to use 900 mhz
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Hi all,
As I was traveling to the US in the next weeks, I was planning the possibility of buying a xoom 3G there as it has not been launched yet in Europe. Then I just realized that the 3G version of the Motorola Xoom is in fact an CDMA only version.
However today I have seen in the iFixit that the Motorola Xoom has the Qualcomm MDM6600 radio chipset. This chipset, which supports HSPA+ (MDM6600 looks like a GSM/UMTS/HSPA+/EV-DO multi-mode processor), is the same as the world phone Motorola Droid Pro.
So, my question is:
- Could we have some hope the US version will allow us to connect to GSM versions in Europe anytime soon?
- Will be able to navigate through GLONASS navigation satellites?
Intriguing enough,
/À
No.
Plus it doesn't hurt to search. This has been touched on numerous time on here.
Thanks for the answer. Actually, I did some search on the forum, but still I fail to see whether the difference will be on the hardware or software, as the radio chipset looks capable.
Part of the issue is that the antennas are tuned for VZ's CDMA frequencies (and modulation, IIRC). It wouldn't work very well on say, 900MHz GSM.
Just because the chipset is capable of GSM theoretically doesn't mean it has the antennas or tuning or SIM slot to be compatible with GSM. The lack of a GSM SIM slot alone shoots down the proposition.

Actually, provided the existing SIM-card reader is wired to a serial port (as opposed to directly to the Mini-PCI port's pins) that part might actually work
(BTW, I will give my firstborn for the 3G-version's schematic. Hook me up, someone!)

From what I gather then LTE SIM and GSM SIM are different sizes.

Just checked- same size. Dunno about connections though.
Why not just wait until April 19th and get the Euro 3G version from Carphone Warehouse? The US version, as standard, will not work in Europe.
1.) euopean software flashed on a vzw xoom
2.) gsm simcard detected and unlocked(pin)
3.) for some reason the rild is falling back to cdma even if it is configured for gsm
radio image?
US Xoom in Europe
Hi GhostOfTheNet,
Do you think If install the Stock MZ601_H.6.1-38-1_Retail_Europe.zip, would it work with the Xoom MZ600 instead of the existing Build HRI39?
If not, Please what have you done so far to get it work?
Thanks in advance.

Will GPS work in EU
Hi,
this is probably a stupid question, but I'd just like a definitive confirmation on this - will I be able to use GPS from a US Motorola Xoom (MZ604) in Europe (specifically the UK)?
Thanks

It wont work because the gsm radio image never gets flashed on to the xoom's baseband :/
I tried to do that to see if i could downgrade the radio but it dident work
