!IMPORTANT! - CHECK FOR POSSIBLE DATA CORRUPTION
Quick Steps to check for possible data corruption:
1. Navigate to LOST.DIR Folder in Internal/External SD card using any file explorer (My Files, ES File Explorer, Astro Explorer, etc.)
2. If this folder is empty then you have nothing to worry about - no data corruption! Otherwise, delete ALL of these files (Labelled with various numbers)
3. Reboot device/Restart media scan for internal/external SD card
4. If files reappear straight after reboot/rescan, then there's a possibility that there are damaged files located on the phone or your SD card is damaged/error with file system used.
[If LOST.DIR folder remains empty after reboot/rescan then your SD card/DATA is safe]
Locating damaged files:
- Open the file using any file explorer (My Files, ES File Explorer, Astro Explorer, etc.) and choose to open as "Text" [Alternatively, you can connect/mount it to your PC and open the files with notepad]
- Text should indicate location of possible corrupted file, navigate yourself to this file
- Make backup of file on PC
- Reboot device/Restart media scan for internal/external SD card
- Check LOST.DIR again if any files are recreated, if files are again recreated, then move to next section.
SD card is damaged/error with file system used:
- If you are using a lagfix (especially those with EXT2 as LOOPS), then disable them and/or return to the RFS file system.
- Reboot device/Restart media scan for internal/external SD card
- Check LOST.DIR again if any files are recreated, if files are again recreated, then I would suggest you reflash your ROM and repartition/format
- If LOST.DIR files continue to reappear instantly after a reboot/rescan, then I would suggest you flash back to stock and contact your device maker for warranty claims.
Possible Causes for creation of files in LOST.DIR:
- Improperly turning off device, such as pulling out battery when device is still on
- Interrupted media scan
- Files copied for PC were corrupted initially
- Damaged SD Card
- Fake SD card
- Disconnecting your device when mounted as mass storage device to your PC (without first properly unmounting it)

Having lots of files in your LOST.DIR does not necessarily mean that you have any data corruption - As noted by some users, it is safe to have these files, but I believe if these files continuous reappear in LOST.DIR, right after a reboot, then you have might have a problem
Delete the files, reboot, and navigate back into LOST.DIR folder and if files are recreated then you possibly have data corruption, if LOST.DIR folder remains empty then you do not have to worry about data corruption
----
EXTRA INFO (Edited by me - thanks to rschenck for clarification/original post):
The LOST.DIR is where the system stores orphaned, damaged or corrupted files it finds during the file system check as it boots up. It would be expected that most all of you will have at least a few orphaned files in there. They are perfectly safe to delete, however, if after rebooting the system, MORE files are created in LOST.DIR then these aren't orphans, they are corrupted files and could signal a problem.
Hopefully when you delete them, they will not be replaced at reboot and you will gain some peace of mind that their is no evident DATA/SDcard Corruption/failure
This is a very important housekeeping/maintenance procedure to extend the lives of our phone, especially for those using EXT2 or loops.
Best of luck,
Peter
My lost.dir folder is empty.
I didn't use a lagfix for quite some time though.
I only recently used and ext4 lagfix which has been enabled for about a month or so.

That's good to hear I hope my post is clear enough .... Again, having lots of files in LOST.DIR does not necessarily mean that your internal/external SD card is damaged, it just means that there has been some form of data corruption and by deleting and reboot, you can confirm that your SD is not damage but instead there has been some data that was corrupted.
I think those files can also be the result of disconnecting your phone when mounted as mass storage device to your pc (without first properly unmounting it)

Hmm...
I have some files in LOST.DIR folder, some in my internal and many in my external. I have deleted those files in both SD then reboot. My external SD's LOST.DIR remain empty after reboot, but in my internal SD there are 2 files reappear.
I am using ext 4 + ext 2 loops...
Thank you very much for sharing this, I will try to figure it out...
I get 2-3 files in LOST.dir on my internal SD. I have only tried this twice so far. I'm using EXT4. So what now?

No lagfix Eclair lost Dir has a few files in it .
Moved on lagfixed rooted customised etc etc .Six months a few files in Lost Dir .
Yesterday got about a dozen files in the directory . Why well simple all Titanium backup files and i had a problem with a restore on that app .
Conclusion and from OP post any file that gets damaged is moved to this folder .
A folder to keep an eye on just in case as a warning of possible corruption or bigger problems .

Remove your loops then check LOST.DIR again. (and/or refer to the Locating damaged files section)

Again, if files do not reappear right after reboot/rescan, then you do not have to worry.

Exactly
So I am an organization freak, and the root of my SD card had gotten a bit out of control. Not unusual, I know, but having just installed Titanium Media Sync and inKa File Manager, I've been doing a lot more file management and the constant scrolling through crap folders that I'll never need to access is getting old. So I've been trying a bunch of stuff to create what basically amounts to a folder full of shortcuts or symlinks that reference the various folders I need to use.
Now I could just create some sort of MyHome directory on my SD card and store my **** in there, but that doesn't solve the problem of having easy access to some of the folders that need to be in /sdcard, like the Download folder.
So the solution I came up with was to create a folder called 'Home' in the root of my phone. I added a bunch of symbolic links to Music, Photos, Downloads, Documents, etc, and the beauty is I can have stuff scattered all around my SD card and still access them neatly from this one folder. And filter out the crap I don't ever need. Doing this produced the exact effect I was hoping for, and I set it as my Home in InKa File Manager. However it comes with two problems:
First, this folder disappears every time I restart my phone! And second, even if this didn't happen I would still be faced with the folder disappearing every time I installed a new ROM. Oh, and in case it isn't obvious, FAT filesystems don't support symbolic links so this Home folder has to exist somewhere outside of the main SD card.
So, in conclusion: I would like to create a very small partition on my SD card that I have read/write access to, so that I can fill it with symbolic links that will stay put and always re-mount. My problem now is that I'm not familiar enough with the Unix file system or with mounting disks to determine how to make sure this partition gets mounted every time I start my phone. Or, if this happens automatically, where to look for the partition.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can point me in the right direction!! I'm pretty sure I have already created an ext2 partition on my card, by using iPartition on my Mac to place it after the FAT partition. But it won't let me name it so I don't even know where to begin looking for the partition itself.
Why can't you just make a folder called "Home" in /data somewhere? Shouldn't matter where the folder is since you can default your file manager to whatever folder upon opening.
Edit: Just tested it by making a folder /data/Home/
It survived a reboot fine.
Shouldn't be wiped when installing new roms either, as long as they don't wipe data like I know the ACS roms don't. Also if the rom you are flashing backs up and restores your data before flashing like some do, it MIGHT, idk for sure, but might backup this folder as well.
That... totally works. Stays after a reboot too. Thanks! This at least solves one problem and makes the idea totally doable again
Im still curious about a solution to the partition thing though. It would be nice to have a Home folder that was literally always around and that I wouldn't have to worry about even after installing new roms. I know some of them don't wipe data but I would generally Odin when installing a new ROM anyway. Installing Cyanogen for the first time definitely requires that and I feel like I may go back to a stock rom once or twice before CM goes final.
The reason nothing "sticks" when you put it in the root FS if because it is a RAM filesystem, loaded from a file image (zImage) at boot -- it's not a more typical file system in secondary storage like all the other filesystems. This is simply an artifact of how embedded linux systems work.
Sent from my mind using telepathitalk
I created a backup zip file of some images that were in the main sdcard folder that's found within the mnt folder and I was trying to delete said zip file as I thought I'd made a mistake with the zip file and somehow I ended up deleted most of the folders within the sdcard folder!
I checked out the Storage section within settings and it has the following information:
Total space]
13.11GB
Apps
3.28GB
Pictures, videos
245MB
Misc.
8.33GB
Available
1.31GB
Even though the information in the Internal Storage section is correct, when I check my folders using a file explorer software on my device which is rooted and running AOKP, it shows that the folders and files that I deleted are still missing.
Is there anyway to access the internal memory via an ADB-type software that will allow me to recover the files and folders that were deleted by accident as well as let me back up the internal memory to a PC once the recovery is done? (That is, when I can access the damn device as it's being a pain in the ass trying to detect it on my laptop!)
I use Recuva from Piriform located HERE ! It found and restored 234 MP3's that I guess I was pocket deleting on my DHD.
Thanks for the link. I'll check it out as soon as I can get my device recognised on my laptop and netbook!
hi folks,
can anyone explain to me how the the available internal memory is reported in settings->storage on the i9505? mine seems pretty nonsensical.
its reported as follows:
total space 9.25gb
applications 1.74gb
pictures videos 12.54mb
audio 240kb
downloads 20mb
miscellaneous 435mb
available 2.32gb
furthermore, es file explorer is reporting that 6.92gb out of 9.25gb available memory is used, which matches the 2.32gb available reported in settings->storage.
so where is the remaining 4.7gb??!?
i used the sd card analyser in es file explorer to see what's going on and where the data is but adding up all the data there does not account for the missing 4.7gb??
any clues?

Hi,
Have you perhaps made a nandroid backup which saved to your internal memory?
hi malybru. no - i've done nandroid to extSdCard. if i had mistakenly done it to internal, the data would show up in the clockworkmod folder anyway, which it doesn't.
i have flashed to official BTU roms from odin, without wipe, and rooted afterwards each time. could this have anything to do with it?
when i attach the phone to my windows laptop and examine the internal memory in windows explorer, under properties the phone memory is saying 6.92gb used out of 9.25, yet when i select all the files and go to properties, it only adds up to 500-500mb?!?

Hi,
I use a great app from the market, called "FX File Explorer"
It has a "View " button at the bottom of the page which will show you a breakdown of the data on your phone.
Click it when you are in your Main Storage.
It might help to locate some stuff that should not be there.
If not,it's still a great app to have.
yes es file explorer has the same thing. there's no sign anywhere of the missing 4.7gb data! all the files add up to about 600mb.
i still have no clue about this. how about if i backup all the files, reformat internal storage in recovery, copy files back?
i had this problem before.. then i checked data/media.. there should only be 3 folders there which are: 0, legacy and obb.. move every other folder to 0.. hope this helps..

Heya guys,
yesterday, I found that I was in dire need of some more free space on my GT-I9505's internal storage and found that only the contents of /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails were taking up space. After a while of trying to get rid of those files that kept creating themselves again, I followed some advice I read on an Android forum: I deleted the contents of the .thumbnail folder, went to Settings -> Apps and cleared the data of the Gallery and Media Storage apps, respectively, before rebooting the phone.
The contents did disappear for good, but neither Total Commander nor the list of installed apps in the settings nor the Storage summary in the settings showed any different amount of free space than before. To make matters worse, the number didn't even change after I found and deleted about 1 GB of files left by an already uninstalled app, i.e. it seems to be stuck on that value. At the same time, SD Maid tells me that I should have a good 5 GB of free space more than the system is showing. Neither restarting nor wiping the cache and dalvik cache helped.
My rooted GT-I9505 is running this unofficial port of AOKP 4.3, Milestone 1, and version 6.15.6 of PhilZ/CWM Advanced. I'm not sure whether there's more information I might need to provide, other than that the size of the thumbnails files apparently exploded (about 4 GB) when I moved quite a lot of data and obb folders to my external storage using FolderMount.
I didn't find any information about this kind of problem anywhere and am afraid I messed up so badly that I might need to reflash...or worse. Do you have an idea how I can try to fix it?

Thank you for your reply. However, the .thumbnails folder is empty since I deleted its content, cleared the data of the Gallery and Media Storage apps and rebooted as I described in my original post...so apparently, it will not always be there but still take up the space if you mess something up as I did.
Since then, the amount of free space seems to be stuck at the value from before the deletion of the .thumbnails contents, even though I deleted other, considerably large amounts of files since then as well, which should have freed up some more space. That can't be healthy for any kind of storage.
Some error in the file system, perhaps? Maybe some part of the OS keeps the space allocated but forgot what it was allocated for because I cleared the Gallery and Media Storage apps' information about it along with the data? I do not know, neither do I know how to fix it, and I'm getting increasingly worried.

So you're saying it's controlled by the rom and Media Storage and Gallery merely use system functions or the like to create and manage those thumbnail files? I see, thanks for that information.
I assume that means I'm humped. After all, I made those two apps forget that they told the rom to allocate the space, which the rom apparently still is doing...
I guess I'll try if reflashing the rom will help, but I most probably won't have the time for that for a week or two. Until then, I'd be more than happy and thankful to hear more ideas.
