i have the sprint stock diamond and i actually like the stock sprint rom except for it was lacking in memory but i was browsing through windows and there are a few cab files that put together take up about 12mb of memory and way to delete them tried with total commander and cannot delete them
ROM = Read ONLY Memory
Hello,
i think you can´t delete this file with any fileexplorer, because this cab files are in the ROM (ReadOnlyMemory).
If you want to get rid of them, you have to flash another cooked rom.

My help files are taking up quita lot of RAM in my Windows folder - would they still work if placed on SD card, similar to how Memaid moves DLL's ??
I moved all help files to SD card and placed a shortcut of the help folder where it was and it works great.
.....
but why this work? with this solution i gain only 1,2 KB!!!!!!
I tried that... But I can't move all help files in \Windows dir. ( hidden files)
it says.. ROM is protected ( or something like that )
I got around 250 KB free .... not bad I guess...
but if I can remove all help files I'll get around 1 MB
do u have any idea :?:
anybody knows how to delete these read only help files!??
if they're ROM files then they're not taking any room that you can gain back unless you cook your own ROM without them.

wouldn´t I get more storage from the ROM?
not from the ROM - you can't shrink the rom except by making a new rom, which AFAIK isn't possible yet on Magician. Best bet for space is to use cabinst to install all programs to Storage/Storage Card, and use MemMaid etc to move many dlls to Storage, and use BigRom hack for extra space. That'll make you much more than a few k from the HTML files.
V
Already got bigstorage. MenMaid is worth a look. thx!

First of all Happy New Year to all of you!
I'm going to cook some roms in the next few days and was wondering what the max working ROM size is. I want to build a ROM with as much apps as possible. Are there any known problems if I use up almost all the ROM space? I remember that there was this "not enough free memory" bug in one of the B&B or Meschle's ROMs. That actually happened although his ROM was extra-small I think.
And talking about the max. size why not talk about all the sizes. I read that the minimum size is a little over 50 MB. In theory there should be 128 MB available, right?
UPDATE: This is what I found out, no need to read the entire thread. I flashed a lot and coud reach a maximum of 65.546 KB, 65802 was too much for it. This ROM included ONLY the OS, I was able to flash a 20 MB Ext. ROM, maybe even larger is possible but doesn't make any sense to me. The RadioROM and the other stuff uses space too, that's the reason why you can't use 128 MB for your ROMs.

If I'm not mistaken WM5 and 6 use persistent strorage - hence ROM is used for storing apps and data, whereas RAM is used for running apps and 'volatile' data. This was different in WM2003se earlier, as RAM was used for both installing apps and running apps and data. ROM was only used for the OS, and for 'built-in-storage', which was like a RAM drive (or ROM drive !!!).
So if you filled up your ROM (extended ROM) with apps, you'd not be able to install anything as there would be no space left. Correct me if I'm wrong.
PS that's why carrier's extended ROMs are only a couple of megs
Thanx for that info, but that's what I'm planning to do. Create a ROM with all the apps that I need so I don't need to install anything later.
I was only wondering because most ROMs seem to be about 50 MB in size but there is only 50 MB free space left to use. Doesn't the Artemis have 128 MB ROM?

Yeah, the atermis has 64mb ram and 128mb rom. I don't know if other space is reserved for the radio rom and the bootlooder etc. I expect that's the case. Good luck with building your ROM, please let me know how you get on.. my email is greenleef (at) talk21 (dot) com if you get a chance.
I want to build an extended ROM too, put all of my cabs in there. I'm just worried about using up valuable application storage space. But then again I install most larger apps to my storage card. What tools do you use, and do you need to CID unlock it first? I'm running the stock WM6 rom from 02.
I use Hyper Core Kitchen, Cook-Your-LLT, OK Package Creator 5.4 and BuildDSM. I also use UPX4PPC to shrink the .exe and .dll files on my pda and then copy the shrinked files back to the packages. I'm still working on that. You only need to use CID unlock if you have a CID locked ROM on your device.
I've succesfully created my first ROMs, 65 MB seems to be the maximum for the OS file, I tried a 20 MB extended ROM that worked out kinda ok. I must have made some mistake because the files installed but nothing was there afterwards to use. I think I might unlock the ext rom and use it as storage space, it's easier that way.

Interesting, but - what for? If you use ExtROM, you reserve space for installers, and even more valuable storage space would be occupied for installed executables and data files.
Perhaps you can achieve better results installing programs from (and maybe - to) microSD card. At least, easier to manage, than reflashing ExtROM.
Anothe side effect: when I install programs to SD Card, after flashing it is enough to copy several .lnk files - and those programs are ready to use, without running installers.
In my opinion, ExtROM is a place for patching OS or keeping very necessary programs, which you could not inject into OS for some reason. Nothing more.
That's what I use my ext rom for, I put my system tools and other programs in there that don't fit in the os-rom. Those are tools I always use and that I haven't deleted in years, so I thought it would be a good idea to have them on my device in case my sd card ever dies or I have to do a hard reset.

I like the idea of having apps and cabs in extrom, If I can figure it all out I plan to do it. I still use Cabinstall from 2003se on my Dell axim, as I find CABS going missing after i install them. I use PIM backup for PIM, and SPB backup for cloning my working rom with manually installed apps. All big apps go on storage card, which usually don't need registry keys so they're happy run from there - even TOMTOM6.
As far as my MicroSD giving up on me, I use symantec ghost, take an image of my SD every couple of weeks, and leave the image on my laptop.
One thing I really would like to do - remove all the useless .exes and things from my image... If I can free up 10meg from my ROM, I could unlock the extROM and use it as a storage area like you mention.... I think ROM is a lot faster than SD....
I was looking for a exe in the windows dir, when i came across some cabs to panels (SE, mxp etc)
if u delete these it should free up some space.
i cant see it effecting the phone as these are cabs
Am i right?
you can try to move 1 of them to your sd card if you can't they're in the rom and can't be deleted and as such will not free up space even if you cooked a new rom without them

Hi.
I have searched for this issue, but haven't been able to find any answer to it.
I am running low on space on the phones main storage, and I discovered that there are several albums sample pictures which takes up a lot of space and I don't use CoPilot and the exe file takes up about 6MB. I tried to delete them but couldn't.
I have done step 67 in hints, tips and tweaks thread, and I install most of my apps on the storage card, but I am still running low on space.
So my question is: is it possible to delete some of the albums sample and CoPilot.exe?
Thanks
Copilot.exe is burned in the ROM, so the answer is no.
But I don't think that is the problem, as well as the sample pictures.
Try this instead:

Thanks for the help but, that thread didn't help me.
I don't get any error when I try to install an app. I just noticed that I don't have much space left on the phone's memory.
It seems that although I install most of my apps on the storage card, some files are still copied to the phones memory. And trying to cleanup the space on the phones memory I noticed some files that I don't use (e.g. CoPilot.exe and all the Albums sample images, total about 17 MB!). I just cannot delete them, since they are part of the ROM. So I was just wondering if someone had succeeded in deleting them. Has anyone succeeded in deleting those files?
By the way, I have done steps 65 and 67 in the tips & tweaks thread.
try cleaning your internet browser history
there's no point deleting files in rom because they are not consuming ram anyway... because they are in rom! So even if you could delete them, it wouldn't help.
deleting the googlemaps cache and the htc album cache will free up device ram.
you can also move your opera cache files to the storage card. If you use the MS facebook app, the thumbnail images located in \Temp\fbimagecache can also be moved to the storage card and i'm pretty sure the HTC generated facebook thumbs can be moved there as well. But you'll need to delve into the registry to do it
The \windows\rings folder can also be moved to storage card

that's not relevant, he's looking to free more space from the internal storage memory, not the ram...
And alas, you cannot remove files that are in the rom... that's why you'd be better off finding a custom rom suited to your needs without all the apps that you don't really need.
Best I've seen is ~250MB free after flash with sense, or about 30MB more without sense

Yes, exactly.
Anyway, thanks for the help. I'll take a look at the custom ROMs.
Its a HTC Touch but for this simple Question don't want to open a new Thread in the Touch Forum:
My Girlfriends HTC Touch P3450 (with this 6.5.3 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=636589) is running out of space.
(even with Original 6.1 ROM the little Space was a big Problem)
All Apps but Windows Marketplace and My Phone are installed on Micro SD.
Office Mobile 2010 needs less Space than the "old" Office Mobile so i upgradet
Ist there a Way to delete the sample Pictures, Sounds/Ringtones and other (unused) Files?
No success with Windows 7 or RESCO File Explorer.
I remember that it was possible with original Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM on P3450 and T7272 but with 6.5.3 it isn't.
Thanks
(and sorry for my poor english)
im trying to delete transformers and millionaire.ink as well as a few others files from my windows folder and i select delete it wont let me delete it...why?
mind u i already deleted the shortcuts from the start menu....
millionaire
guitar hero
ferrari, prince of persia,tetris
and a couple of others....
how do i delete em from the windows folder?
im using total commander editer....
thanks
because they exist in the rom, meaning even if you did remove them, they would come back when you hard reset. SOme rom files make a copy of themselves that can be deleted (till next hard reset) but some dont.
^^^^
thanks im on the stock tmo rom 2.13
try this
reformat your sd card/ get a new one and the preloaded stuff wont be there.. well some of it the movies are on the sd i know cause you lose them if you reformat your stock sd card ... then you can run a program like clean temp or something i forget its on omarket, and delete dead quick links and delete it it from the \device\windows\start menu in total comandrer should be good to go
