FRONT CAMERA? What for without service provider? - XPERIA X1 General

Most people can't use the Video Calls because lack of providers.
But what else you do with it.
Any body uploaded pictures taken with the front camera?

Not really true to say "most people", EVERY provider here in the UK does it, bar a couple of the tiny "virtual providers" who don't have their own network.
Maybe its just your region that doesnt offer it, but they couldn't have shipped it here without a front camera.

in the US providers do not offer it--however their are apps that let you use it for a webcam, front facing cam(for self shots) or skype video calls.

here most people can make video calls
it's just that nobody really want to it's
pretty much not used
guess it's a girls having to spend ½hour to look their best
before answering the phone thing

what apps for webcam ability?

it's in std. phone app
and it only works with
direct calls to another phone which
support it

id like to know what apps you are talking about for using the front camera as a webcam / skype video calls...would be great

As WEBCAM? I guess we need an app. and connection trought USB or Bluetooh. Hmmm.. anybody knows?

Hmm. Seems there is an app here: http://www.ateksoft.com/webcamplus.html

@ At45
Thank you, good find.
Looks very good I hope is compatible with Xperia.
Thanks

Would be nice if there would be a way to use the small front-cam as a webcam in Live Messenger.
Regarding the use for it for videocalls, here in Holland it's possible to do so as nearly every operator offers it, but I wouldn't know of any people that make use of it. It seems to be too expensive or so.

Has anyone managed to get Ateksoft WebCamera Plus to use the front camera?

i believe theres only 1 carrier that offers video calls in the US... I could go on about the world politics but i wont.
however as i have a x1i coming tomorrow i was also wondering about this. as it will be the only feature on the phone i wont be able to use.

well if you are on tmobile then you won't be able to use the 3g either...but yeah in the USA we are hosed with video phones.

until they lower the costs of video calls (at least in my country) NO one is gonna use them xD

I have an X1a and I noticed it does have the front camera but no icon in the basic phone app. I am sure there is a reg edit to enable this. Anyone know where to find it?

"no body uses video call" I disagree
Really no 3G in USA ?? Sounds wierd to me
I'm currently living in a "developing" country in Latinamerica, but 3 out of 4 local carriers offer video call (kinda "fancy" feature since it costs more than a standard call). HSDPA is also available, so I got really surprised when you stated "US providers do not offer videocall"
It doesn't make sense to me, you are supposed to be the "developed world"
Lets get to the point:
I flashed my X1i with the X1A LAM (latinamerica) ROM and I can tell you for sure the videocall option is there in the diapad
I've also tested the X1A NAM (northamerica) ROM and I think it had it too (not completely sure because I don't remember, but I should have noticed its absence)
In dialpad, check "menu" --> "vieocall options"
It would possibly apperar only when 3G signal is picked up

Most American networks don't support full 3g yet, it's coming soon though from AT&T at least.
Anyone know a way to get video calls through Skype on the X1?

Skype on DHD

I have also posted this on VF forums but hoped someone here on might have some experience of this:
Anyone out there using Skype on their DHD yet? I use skype for my business and have a skype incoming number too so it is great that I will no longer have to divert skype calls to my mobile at cost. I can now just pick them up directly from my mobile for free. I can even make free outgoing UK landline calls from the mobile via skype as part of my skype subscription, although this isn't as big a deal due to the VF contract I have.
I may be wrong, and I will be testing this out very soon, but when abroad and assuming you buy a local SIM with some data allowance, I think I should be able to receive calls to my skype number and make calls (via my skype subscription) to UK landlines all from my mobile for free! Can anyone with similar experience confirm this to be the case?
Also, the skype app for android isn't the most intuitive regarding changing the settings etc and you can't use the back button once logged in, only the home button to hide the app. Hopefully that will be addressed in the next release. My main issue however is that I cannot change the ringing volume for skype which is currently set very low. I have found an option to change the ring tone but it only offers either the default or something from the music stored on the handset, no mention of volume though. I have also set all the volumes of the handset (Calls, notifications, etc) to full but skype still rings very quietly. Anyone have any ideas on this?
For anyone interested, Skype just released an update for this app. It now allows you to use the back button to hide the app. However there is now a more annoying problem of the missed call page showing up everytime you go to the app (assuming you have a missed call) and won't go away until you clear the whole history.
I have read on other forums the only solution to the low ringing volume is to change the default to a music file of your choice which is of a decent volume.

Yes, tried Skype on my DHD today for the first time. Signal was quite good to start with but then the sound started breaking up a little. Then I took an incoming Skype call which didn't have such good sound quality.
It clearly works, but I think the sound quality, like on another other computer, depends on the quality of your data internet connection. Also, it is annoying about the back button, I agree. Looks like its just the first version for Android, so hopefully Skype will improve it soon.
So the BIG ?
Is there a front facing camera on the DHD?
No, the DHD hasnt got a front facing camera.
Any idea if the back camera can be used for a video call?
Not very convenient I know but its someth at least ;]

NO I did not, because all the crappy reviews do NOT mention that, most of them tend to be C&P from some bad stock handout, same as a few 'older' reviews of the DHD mention that the FFC may only work when 2.2 comes out.

Bell Canada Atrix VOIP

as we all know, the AT&T Atrix has problem with most VOIP softare. Just wondering if the Canadian Bell version is also experiencing the same problem? If not, that means AT&T is doing more than just turning off HSUPA...

No can't do at this moment. Need to wait for Motorola to sort this VOIP issue.

IM+ Talk Skype Calling
Just an update to using the newly purchased IM+ Talk, a web-based Skype calling service. Well, it took me a whopping two-hour to figure out how to make calls and it was super frustrating...I subsequently had to purchase another Skype subscription (unlimited world, in addition to my original unlimited calls to Hong Kong plan) because of the call-back feature IM+ Talk uses.
So how it works is that you enter the CALL BACK number of the device you are calling on, enter the number you want to call, press the CALL button, and then your device will ring. Answer the call and you will then hear your number connecting. I don't know how to clearly explain it but it works on my Atrix thru. 3G connection
.Eric
im using an att atrix on Fido in canada and i can use skype just fine. i think its att network that is blocking this somehow not the atrix itself or maybe the combination of the two. so if a bell atrix allows voip on bell network it might still not work on att network.
I am using a Bell Atrix on Rogers and am having a hard time using the Skype for Android to work properly. I previously used Skype on my iPhone 4 (also on Rogers) and it worked like a charm...
I am surprised that it's working for you on Fido. There is a big thread from the Motorola support forum that discusses about this issue.
BELL Atrix ain't working on Fido. none of VOIP apps is, tried Tango, Skype from Market, Skype hacked for 3G, SIPDroid Csip, Fring........
Sux....
sorry I made a mistake. it doesn't work for me the sound is horrible. I only install and made a call and assume it was working.
If the problem with Skype is sound quality it may be that Skype needs updating to support the phone properly. In my experience with Galaxy S the sound quality was horrendous for the first while (that Skype was even functional) until updates sorted things out. Actually it took a while to even be able to login, when it could first be installed it wouldn't accept any login info. Picky program.
Atrix, Skype, IM+, ClickTalk, Tango vs Bad Audio
I've the same problem as all you and i've try the following apps like Skype, Skype(3G), IM+, ClickTalk, Tango and Yahoo....
All exept the Yahoo is work badly with the audio, it cutting off and here i'm talking about using WIFI connection ... with the 3G forget about-it.
Only Yahoo look to get a good result and not mentionning that only the Qvix, Yahoo and Tango as the Video working correctly
As winner the Yahoo Video and Audio work over WIFI.
I'm using also the SMSSpeak, Call Annoncer and EmailSpeak, the playback are for unknown reason playing back too fast. To fix Reboot the phone, i think the audio driver as something to do here too.
I've read also for our Bell Canadian friend that the Firmware is out of date... like far away ... AT&T as the patch to fix this problem of audio in the next release 1.57 and BELL CACA is still at the Beta 0.83 no fix planned!
After chatting with a tech at Motorola we can't dream for a new version until the new kernel will be availlable to get the Android 2.3 (What a great one i was using this on a real google G1 this is a real charm) ... So since we known that BELL, ATT and Motorola are not reading our note, it's useless to try the get them to move ... exept to get everyone who as a Atrix to Call/Email/Fax Motorola,Bell,ATT,Fido ....
and btw Moto is coming with a new phone... they act like this is just junk hardware like a batterie. Change phone to fix.

motorola atrix 3g video calls

guys i am in india ....i bought this phone for its awesome features unware of the feature of lack of video calls through 3g network....
i am still trying to figure out how to make a video call through 3g...
in nokia symbian os there is an option of making either a voice call or a video call....is there an option like this in motorola atrix...
guys i am trying very desperately for this....
i have tried fring and other video calls providing softwares but it requires the caller on the other end to also log in to fring or other video call software....
pls suggest me a software which on installation into my phone will alllow me to make as well as receive video calls from anyone with 3g video call facility on the other side....
thank u
Hello, by chance have you tried tango? Its in the app store I heard good things but haven't got to try it yet
Or fring ?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
No, there is no native app for android that doesn't require both parties to be logged in yet. That feature is called google voice video chat, and is currently available only on the motorola xoom, and other honeycomb devices.
I think he means video calling people over the 3G network not internet. I understand this protocol is not implemented in the States, so most of you guys who are in the States would not understand by this.
He wants to make a video call to any other 3G phone that supports video call. Without using the internet and without using any app. My Samsung Galaxy S has that feature. Im having Dell Streak and since its made for the US market, it is like the Atrix.. it doesnt support 3G video call.
Sigh. Galaxy S is made in Korea and the korean has 3G video call protocol implemented there. i think thats why they have.
Qik video app can do this they just release a new version altough sound is bad and video is upside down

How ever , in Offcial displays and websites show us "with a 1.4GHz quad-core processor at its heart, missing only the ability to make calls."
though it is Android 4.1, they cancel the function of making call. For fear that galaxy camera would impact the selling of S III.
>>>>>>>>>Network 4G、3G , HSPA+ 21Mbps (Not include Gsm communication)
Is it the problem of hardware ? Seach the words "call" in the web ,many replies show that they are confused the cancel of call function.
Don't worry, I or someone else in these forums will hack its core and make sure that we can make calls with it.
The galaxy camera CANNOT make calls.......It's just a camera with android on it.........you can put a 3G or 4G enabled sim on it to use its data(like the iPad),and NOT make calls......If you are interested in buying a phone with a good camera....wait for the Nokia Lumia phones with Pureview
Also S-ON/S-OFF are terms only for HTC devices......it's sort of their way to prevent access to the NAND

The reason that works is because it shares a modem with a device that can make phone calls. I'm not saying this camera doesn't. I'm saying don't go flashing that modem.
I have a galaxy camera inbound next week. Expect some threads in original development and development from me. I will be releasing Heimdall One-Click and CASUAL for this device shortly after I get ahold of it. I will also film some XDATVs on it. Then I will send it to Josh Groce at MobileTechVideos.com to get a JTAH flash on it.
I'm very excited to see what this thing can do
It can be done on a very simple way using CM10 : by enabling in build.prop the phone functions and using a Bluetooth headset. However, I think CM10 with Galaxy Camera is a no go, as all the main features are in TouchWiz on this device.
The harder method would be to modify the build.prop to let you make phone calls and then install the dialer&contacts apps .apk from S3 or Note 2. Here will be some compatibility issues, but they could be solved. The only thing you will need is a Bluetooth headset, which will run as speaker and mic.
Samsung can't remove the phone features in Android, just they can disable these functions, which we will enable again .
L.E.: The modem should not be a problem, because this device can receive 3G data for Internet via microSIM, correct?
just gonna state the obvious
Could you just use Skype/Google voice (us)
Would this not work? (Maybe need to grab apks as not supported) but wouldn't that work?

Yes, that will work. It's running Android and that's the only real requirement for those apps. It will probly also support Google+ Hangouts. Native phone calls are a different story though.

Surely you could make Voip calls on it. The device has a speaker, a microphone and data connectivity via Wifi or 3g/4g. You might look silly making calls on a camera but if you paired that with a Bluetooth adapter, then you'd be in business.

I wouldn't care about looking silly, but it would be a perfect device for holidays (or small get-outs and concerts/events). You run around making pictures all day, making very occasional phonecalls and whatsapping/skyping a bit in between .. if this device had call-capability I could leave my $600 smartphone at home and worry about only one expensive device in my pocket.
Besides, I'd laugh my ass off at people looking at me making a phonecall with this haha
The "what the ?!" faces will be priceless
The mic placement is no good for making traditional phone calls, the call quality will be terrible I think. I was really hoping this thing could make calls, I basically only use apps on my nexus 7 now and I only need a phone to take photos and make calls, this could have been it.

[Q] Video call possibility in android

Hi guys.
I am searching for many days about this, but still no proper information.
(Old sony ercisson and nokia mobile had video calling feature.)
Why there is no default video call app in android?
(Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...res_in_Android )
Why there is no App in market or any module for Xposed framework to enable video calls in droids.
Where some manufacturers have video called function enabled and Korean mobiles (LG, Samsung) has video call function but that doesn’t seem to work in Europe, Asia or America, it works only in korea.
Now I have few queries.
1--> is it possible to make video call from any android via any kind of customization with rooting, installing apps or with xposed framework etc.
2 -- regardless of unable to make video call, can droids receive video calls?
3-- is it possible to make video calls with Korean android mobiles, outside Korea? Or we can say, is it possible to fix this error, “when global roaming, video call not supported”. Or it is possible to enable video call when roaming.
Fronts cams are 50% useless without native video calls in androids, why nobody is trying to add video call feature in android?
i already post it in other section, but got no reply in 2 days, probably that was wrong section
Android as an OS has had video calling for years but the thing is that it has to be supported by the carrier for that device. And up until recently almost no one in the states allowed it. Even with those that do have it. They seldom use it as it is just a gimmic and causes more issues then it is worth.
well i have asked my operator and they say that i can do video calls if my phone support. when i put my sim in my retired e72 i can do video calls over network operators line but cant do video call on my z1c! thats a shame.. i hope some one will write a mod or script for that it work..
cheers.

I missed that it was a Korea device. I hate to say it but your out of luck. They are not made to work fully outside of Korea. Their whole system is set up differently as far as data goes.
As for why people are not looking into this. Well that's simple. It's a gimmic. We spend thousands of dollars with wearable, BT, and other hands free devices just to have to hold the device in front of you makes it very impractical.
