Video performance : THE SOLUTION ! - Touch HD General

It's not the ULTIMATE solution, but it's the only solution i found to watch videos perfectly in my Touch HD.
Video : HD trailer 800x480 @ 25 fps : Ice Age 2
Software : CorePlayer 1.2.5
First benchmark = 87%
First step :
Re-encoding the video in 240x400 on your PC with http://www.pocketdivxencoder.net/ or http://www.virtualdub.org/
Why 240x400 ?
- the video is pre-rotated (instead of 400x240) (performance +5%)
- the resolution is exactly the half of the native resolution (480x800) (performance +60%)
Second step :
Customize the options of Coreplayer :
Menu / Tools / Colors = Native
Menu / Tools / Preferences / Video / Video output = Raw FrameBuffer
Menu / Tools / Preferences / Video / Smooth zoom = OFF
Menu / Tools / Preferences / Video / Dither = OFF (uncheck)
Menu / Tools / Preferences / Advanced / Slow video memory = check
Results (the quality of theses videos seem egal)
800x480 : 87%
800x480 (with the options) : 95%
240x400 : 141%
240x400 (with the options) : 232%

Any visible degradation on picture charity and details?
Would be good if you post both clips for all to see for themselves.
Beautiful work. Thanks.

no, the quality seems the same
because the DPI screen is very high (800x480 for 3''8)

Sorry are you saying we have to re-encode a hi res video ourselves (on a pc) to half the resolution (step 1) or does the player do it automatically?

I upload the trailer "Ice Age 2 HD" on rapidshare (ready in 15min) :
800x480 3Mbits : 26 Mo
240x400 3Mbits : 13 Mo

Re-encode on your PC !!
With PocketDivxEncoder for example Very easy to use !

OK, the upload on Rapidshare is done :
http://rapidshare.com/files/163866230/Benchmark_HTC_Touch_HD.zip.html
You have 2 files : the original, and the optimized 240x400
BUT YOU NEED TO change the options on CorePlayer (see the 1st post of this topic) to see the result.
Default options :
800x480 : 87%
240x400 : 141%
With the optimized options :
800x480 : 95%
240x400 : 232% !!!

Good post. I think our moderator should sticky this.

Well I got to that solution a week ago, when I got my Touch HD.
But the Coreplayer options, I didn't knew.
Simpy using pocketdivxencoder is enough for me.
But thanks!
Cheers.

Nice solution...
The only problem many of us expecting the Touch HD to have good video performance without the hassles of re-encoding videos.

You can't really expect the phone to resize every frame of a massive video eg 800 x 480 or whatever on the fly. If you want better results, of course you have to re-encode yourself to a more suitable size. Otherwise it's just wasting CPU usage and you'll definitely get slow downs.

Sorry but this doesnt sould like a solution to me. Its just reencoding a file to a extreme low res, only a fourth of the pixels, and playing it.. Of course it plays ok, but its only 240x400, and besides that, its completely unpractical to reencode every moviefile. So: nothing changed, no solution at all...

What video bitrate and audio bitrate did you use in pocketdivxencoder to resize your video?
In the advanced options did you choose your ppc as portrait or landscape?
Finally, I can only resize at 400x240. How could you resize at 240x400?
Thanks!

oh yes, what a super duper solution, re-encode the video with less quality on a pc and losing time.
HTC should contract you for new developments.
This is not a solution, the only solution is get hardware acceleration and software allowed to use it.

Guys,
If there is no noticeable degradation in picture quality and sharpness (which was my question in my post), why are you having problem with this solution? Why carry along and process all the 7.1 sound system when you only have stereo capability? Why carry along all the resolution of a blueray when you don't need it? Of course it is reasonable to go through some processing and bring it to a form that we need, minus all the unwanted and unnecessary stuff if that provides the same clarity and improves performance.
Is the reduced resolution becoming ****ty? If it is, then all the phones out there with such resolution (includinding the most worshipped iPhone) ought to be thrown in the bin too as a meda device.
Millenius, thanks for all your tips. It is definitely helpful.

I agree, although the proposal is offered as a solution I would say it's a clunky and expensive workround....but thanks for sharing for those who maybe already have the Coreplayer software. [1]
My Archos (heaven forbid I am going to say something positive about it) just does it .... screen is the same resolution. I drop a 700Mb file and it plays.
I do not know the difference in the internals but it is a disappointment because I was hoping to reduce down to a single device .... looks like the Archos has some life left in it yet.

Yes, HTC should supply the video acceleration drivers...no doubt. However, there aren't many portable devices that can take a high res movie that is meant for a PC and play it perfectly. Another example, would you take a 12 mega-pixel image that you took from your DSLR and just download it to your HD for viewing...of course not, you would re-size it first to save disk space, knowing that the extra resolution is wasted on a screen that size anyway. It is a hassle, but worth the trouble.

I dont know much about video resolutions and such, just want to be able to watch Divx TV series on my HD. And at this the HD did just fine - until I tried the settings recommended in the 1st post. Then I had a noticeable lag, and between every scene it felt like someone turned a page - black frame(s) - or turning a curtain, dont know how to explain otherwise. Got rid of all the changes, except Colour, and cannot check Dither again. Any idea?

This is not a duplicate video conversion post. This doesn't just give instructions on how to make a video, but how to do it with high quality, so the movie is the correct aspect ratio, and movies filmed in Panavision and other higher aspect ratios are always shown in normal 16x9 widescreen. Also, this is for DVD rips from widescreen sources (everything I have is widescreen). If you're doing TV shows or something else at 4:3 this won't work (I can give those instructions as well if there's demand for it).
SUPER supports a wide variety of input/source file format to play or encode (to & from) without any additional third party software:
Video format: 3gp/3g2(Nokia,Siemens,Sony,Ericsson) asf, avi (DivX,H263,H263+,H264,Xvid,MPEG4,MSmpeg4 etc..), fli, flc, flv (used in Flash), mpg (Mpeg I,Mpeg II), mov(H263,H263+,H264,MPEG4 etc..), mp4(H263,H263+,H264,MPEG4), ogg, qt, rm, str (Play Station), swf (Flash), viv, vob, wmv
Audio format: ac3, amr, mp2, mp3, mp4, ogg, ra, wma
AviSynth Script Files: avs. ALL Input/source files that fail to encode, will be encoded without error when using AviSynth scripts.

SUPER © Setup:
Codecs: MP4 H.264 AAC LC
Video: 480:270 3:2 23.976 480kbps (yes, you set the video to 480x270)
Audio: 44100 2 96kbps Default
Options: Hi Quality:OFF Top Quality:OFF
Pad: Top:24 Bottom:26 Left:0 Right:0
Crop: Top:0 Bottom:0 Left:Calc Right:Calc
While everything else stays the same from movie to movie, the Calc options above need to be calculated depending on the resolution of the video source. I'll quickly give the calculation and then give an example. The calculation is ( Width - ( Height * 16 / 9 ) ) / 2. Width and Height are of the source video and the result would be what you would select for the left and right crop.
Here's a couple examples from my DVD rips:
* 886x480 source video: ( 886 - ( 480 * 16 / 9 ) ) / 2 = 16 (set the left and right crop to 16)
* 1128x480 source video: ( 1128 - ( 480 * 16 / 9 ) ) / 2 = 137 (set the left crop to 136 and the right crop to 138)
* 852x480 source video: ( 852 - ( 480 * 16 / 9 ) ) / 2 = -0.7 (this movie is already 16x9 so you can turn Crop OFF)
That's it! Perfect aspect ratio, no stretching, and very high quality. Oh, and I would suggest that when you playback a movie TURN ON AIRPLANE MODE! (Home, Menu, Settings, Wireless controls, Airplane mode). The phone searching for GSM, Edge, 3G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and apps trying to use connections will cause your video to slow down, pause, or even fail. As a bonus, it will also greatly extend video viewing time.
Other information:
For high quality, I went with 480kbps video and 96kbps audio. When doing samples, I tested many bit rates and found 480/96kbps to be the perfect balance between quality and file size. A 90 minute movie will be about 380MB using these settings, this allows me to have about 8-9 movies on a 4GB card, plenty for me. You can sacrifice quality for a smaller file size by using 336kbps video and 64kbps audio which will result in the same 90 minute movie being about 265MB.
23.976 frames per second is what all DVD's of movies are filmed at as movies are all shot at 24 frames per second. Using 25 frames per second or 29.97 or 30 will just LOWER the quality because the converter will have to create averaged frames or duplicate previous frames to generate more frames than the source video has. If the source movies you're converting from are not 23.976 already, whoever ripped it did so incorrectly. In the future, make sure you always rip movies from DVD at 23.976.
You should always use the 3:2 aspect ratio in SUPER © as that's what the G1 format is. If you don't select 3:2, if you preview the movie on your computer it will look different than on your G1 because it will stretch it on your computer. Basically, keeping it always at 3:2 no matter what the source will allow you to preview videos on your computer and they will look the same on your G1 as well.
Saving File:
Right click in the box directly under the purple OUTPUT section to reveal the menu for Super ©. Here you will select the default area to save your file by selecting “Output File Saving Management. And you will also find the function to add your media files here as well Add Multimedia Files or Ctrl+A.
Once you have added the file just click on the Encode (Active Files) button and voila!!! You will have your newly converted video files for your G1. Hope this was useful and if you have any questions please feel free to PM me or post your questions. I do have the direct link for the Super © program so if you are having trouble finding it just PM me and Ill gladly send it to you. ENJOY!!!!
EDIT: Once you have loaded the video you intend to encode you can double click on the file to find out its' original settings such as frame rate and such so you can choose it from the list. This might help with the quality of the video.
NOTE: You can download the Video Player 1.0 in the android market to play these files.
Here's a screen shot:

SOG Video Converter options that give proper aspect ratio using 1.0 Video Player on G1 (SOG the only converter that I have tried that works for this)
Choose profile setting "to iPhone"
480X320, H.264: Excellent Quality : (I adjust the parameters as listed below)
Audio = 64
Video Quality = 312 (you can make it higher, this value gives more space for video files with good quality).
Frame rate = 23.97
Output Image = Keep Aspect Ratio (this is important)
Video resolution = 480:320

For those using Linux, be sure and check out Avidemux. It's available in the repositories of most Linux distributions and has automatic tools for converting to various formats (like PSP, for example--which should be great on the G1).
It's as simple as loading a video, selecting PSP from the tools menu, and starting it up.
Or if you're a Linux masochist, the following is a basic converter to Xvid that might be of some use.
Code:
mencoder <inputfilename> -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=-<targetvideosize>ass=1:turbo:threads=2 -ofps 25 -oac copy -o /dev/null
mencoder <inputfilename> -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=-<targetvideosize>ass=2:threads=2 -ofps 25 -oac mp3lame -lameopts br=$abitrate:vol=2:aq=2:mode=0:vbr=0 -o output.avi

STRAIGHT DVD RIP: By umop.apisdn

DVD ripping for COMPLETE NEWBIES.
If you are completely clueless about how to rip a DVD to your G1 (like I was a week ago) this post is for you.
This method will rip a movie straight from your DVD to an MP4 file that the G1 Video Player 1.0 knows how to play.
You will need to download and run HandBrake (an open source ripper) http://handbrake.fr/ HandBrake has the simplest, most intuitive UI of any ripper I have found so far.
Here are some settings that work for the G1. Some experimentation may find a better set of parameters, but these work and yield good results. A two hour movie ends up about 375 MB.
Source: Browse to the VIDEO_TS folder on your DVD
Title: Select the longest one.
Destination: Wherever you want to keep the file. You can actually rip directly to the mounted SD card of the G1, if you want.
Preset: Classic works. Others may also, I haven't tested them yet.
OutPut Settings: Set Encoder to Mpeg4, Audio to AAC, uncheck the two other checkboxes.
On the Picture Settings tab, turn off Crop, check "Loose Anamorphic", and set width to 480. (NOTE: sometimes you have to check Anamorphic PAR before Loose Anamorphic becomes usable. Maybe this is a GUI bug?)
On the Video tab, set the Quality Avg Bitrate to 384.
Click Start in the upper left corner. A 2 hour movie takes about 45 min to encode.
Hopefully people will find this helpful.
Noel.
EDIT: If the DVD you want to rip is copy protected, you will need to also install DVD43 ( http://www.dvd43.com ), a system tray application that de-copy-protects DVDs on the fly. There aren't any configuration parameters, you just install it and forget it. It silently removes copy protection as you read data from the DVD.

TMPGEnc. 4 Xpress Template: Android Video Encoding
I have created a template for TMPGEnc Express 4.0 and above that will make encoding videos to the Android Video Player much easier. It will work with unencryped DVD files, WMV, MPEG, AVI, MOV, and just about any video you throw at it. (if you have the codec)
You must have TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress or later installed before placing the template file. Just download the template, extract the file and put it in the "Export" folder found under /Documents/TMPGEnc/Template. Now follow the directions below.
Step 1: Open Application and click "Start a new project"
Step 2: Drag and drop a file or a variety of files in any format, aspect or demension
Step 3: Click the "Format" tab at the top and at the bottom of the list there is a "Custom Output Templates" folder, choose the "Android Formated MP4" and hit select. On the next screen make sure "Output each clip in a seperate file" is selected
Step 4: Select "Encode" tab at the top of the screen, choose the output location and then click on the "Start Encode" button in the bottom left that looks like a movie clip with an arrow.
This program is expensive ($99) but I have been using it for years for all the different devices I have. There is a trial and the software can be found here: http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/te4xp.html. It is the only software that I know that can take multiple video formats and sizes and batch process them too to one format.
I have converted a number of DVD's in different Aspect ratios and alot of recorded TV from my Vista Media Center, the quality is amazing and has not failed me yet. Please try my template and let me know if you have any problems. I am going to work on a couple more templates in the future to be able to choose Quality Encodeing or Lower Quality with Smaller Size.
Let me know your thoughts and experiences, or any changes I should make to the steps above.

he mikey, love your tut on encoding with super, one question i have all your videos are ***x480 in size. i want to convert a hd rip i have its 1280x544 what settings would i use for this?
I have tried using handbrake and Super. I have grabbed the VOB files using DVDShrink, but am unable to use Super to create a MP4 file. The file that gets created from handbrake causes the video player to inform me that the video is not able to be played. I used the options that were listed by the OP for handbrake, but still get the message. Is Super able to handle the multiple VOB's and create a single MP4?
TIA,

Why 3:2? it looks squeezed and terrible.
Why 480x270? The G1 is 480x320 now I have two blue (not even black) bars across the top and bottom of the movie.
Is this supposed to take 2 hours per movie? or is my computer just too slow?
The frame rate is perfect, no jitters in playback.
The file is not 250MB is over 500MB actually.

1) If using Super C, you need to change the color option for the pads.
2) Good sticky over at Tmonews about this.
3) I find that 336K video bitrate using H264 looks fine on the G1's 3" screen.
4) Also find that 64K audio at 22.5 sample rate is fine ( I upped Pick of Destiny to 96K at 32K sample rate, though).
These settings save space and battery lasts longer too.
If you do not want to constantly mess with aspect ratio settings, SOG is the best endcoder, but is $30. I use it and use auto aspect ratio option.
SOG also seems to look better at the same bit rates as Super C.
Thank you very much for this mikey, i used the straight dvd rip method and it works like a charm!!! Thanks for putting this together I had a question for you, have you successfully made dvd's that play on your dash with the same quality?
I got a question. At the moment I'm using in Handbrake:
Mpeg4 (H264)
AAC
But the VideoPlayer doesnt recognize the video files I have on my SD card. I also tried Mpeg-4 (FFMPEG) as a codec but it doesn't work either. Could someone help me please?
Update:
After reinstalling the videos application I am finding now the videos. But they don't get played properly. I'm always getting the sound but the video is just one green block. (using H264/iPhone settings) Using other h264 settings also lead me to this green video block. Is there anything I can do about?

I should have waited a few days to say it works like a charm, the last few movies i've encoded don't play, either i get sound and no video or sound with green blocks too. my first 3 play perfectly and im doing it the same way. No clue why
It really differs from the input file. Some work and some dont work in the resulting output file. The settings for iPhone and iPod are ok.
Ok, I've been doing this for a while w/ no negative feedback from the device. I too had the issues w/ either video show as blank/green blocks with no audio or vice versa no audio w/ video just fine. After some research here's what I found. Hope it helps.
Video:
AVC .264 codec for the video (this is harware accelerated and thus can get a better respons from the device)
Basline Profile (this is needed due to our devices not having all the bells and whistles h.264 is capable of)
You want the Profile no higher then level 3.1
CABAC (specific to h.264) is a NO
Reference Frames: 1 (only 1)
Bitrate (Variable): 1000 Kbps
Framerate: Constant @ 23.97 (for most videos this is how they were originally recorded, If you increase this there is more that has to be don during encoding and may slow it down)
For those of you that know how to setup your encoder programs using a manual script for the h.264 settings, you can use the following for your script (it's what works for me)
Code:
cabac=0 / ref=1 / deblock=1:0:0 / analyse=0x1:0x111 / me=hex / subme=6 / psy_rd=1.0:0.0 / mixed_ref=0 / me_range=16 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=0 / 8x8dct=0 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / chroma_qp_offset=-2 / threads=3 / nr=0 / decimate=1 / mbaff=0 / bframes=0 / keyint=250 / keyint_min=25 / scenecut=40(pre) / rc=2pass / bitrate=1000 / ratetol=1.0 / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=10 / qpmax=51 / qpstep=4 / cplxblur=20.0 / qblur=0.5 / vbv_maxrate=10000 / vbv_bufsize=10000 / ip_ratio=1.40 / aq=1:1.00 / cabac=0 / ref=1 / deblock=1:0:0 / analyse=0x1:0x111 / me=hex / subme=6 / psy_rd=1.0:0.0 / mixed_ref=0 / me_range=16 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=0 / 8x8dct=0 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / chroma_qp_offset=-2 / threads=3 / nr=0 / decimate=1 / mbaff=0 / bframes=0 / keyint=250 / keyint_min=25 / scenecut=40(pre) / rc=2pass / bitrate=1000 / ratetol=1.0 / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=10 / qpmax=51 / qpstep=4 / cplxblur=20.0 / qblur=0.5 / vbv_maxrate=10000 / vbv_bufsize=10000 / ip_ratio=1.40 / aq=1:1.00
As for Audio:
Nero AAC works the best
Profile: AAC-LC
CBR: 160kbps
Sample Rate: 48khz works fine (Personally, I don't change the audio rate at all)
Granted my average files are around 190MB per 30 minutes, but it looks and sounds amazing. Better then I was ever able to accomplish with my Dash.
I ripped The Boondock Saints and Fight Club with no issues though when I tried to rip Benders Big Score and The Beast with a Billion Backs they came out blocky, the audio was off and playing slow.
I'm using the HandbrakeCLI for linux due to the fact that the GUI version won't let you crop or adjust the aspect ratio
here is what I tried and worked for Boondock Saints and Fight Club:
HandBrakeCLI -i "/home/josh/.wine/drive_c/FIGHTCLB" -t 1 -c 1-25 -o "/home/josh/.wine/drive_c/FIGHTCLB/fight_club.mp4" -f mp4 -w 480 --deinterlace="slow" -e ffmpeg -b 512 -a 1 -E faac -B 160 -R 44.1 -6 stereo -D 1 -v
Good settings for handbrake
I have integrated MMTest97's x264 encoder options into the HandbrakeCLI command. It works like a charm and the videos look Great! here is the full command with scaling to the G1's exact screen res:
HandBrakeCLI -i "Path/To/Source/Video" -t 1 -c 1-25 -o "Path/To/Destination/Video" -f mp4 -w 480 -l 320 --deinterlace="slow" -e x264 -x cabac=0:deblock=1,0:analyse=0x1,0x111:bitrate=416sy_rd=1.0,0.0:chroma_me=1:chroma_qp_offset=-2:threads=3:nr=0:keyint=250:keyint_min=25:scenecut=40:bitrate=416:ratetol=1.0:qcomp=0.60:qpmin=10:qpmax=51:qpstep=4:cplxblur=20.0:qblur=0.5 -a 1 -E faac -B 96 -R 44.1 -6 stereo -D 1 -v
Also here is the command for an aspect retained video:
HandBrakeCLI -i "Path/To/Source/Video" -t 1 -c 1-25 -o "Path/To/Destination/Video" -f mp4 -w 480 --deinterlace="slow" -e x264 -x cabac=0:deblock=1,0:analyse=0x1,0x111:bitrate=416sy_rd=1.0,0.0:chroma_me=1:chroma_qp_offset=-2:threads=3:nr=0:keyint=250:keyint_min=25:scenecut=40:bitrate=416:ratetol=1.0:qcomp=0.60:qpmin=10:qpmax=51:qpstep=4:cplxblur=20.0:qblur=0.5 -a 1 -E faac -B 96 -R 44.1 -6 stereo -D 1 -v
Alternatively if you are lazy like me you can set up a profile in HandBrakeGUI that uses these x264 options for batch encoding!
Don't know if this helps anyone, but it is working great for me! Thanks for the help in getting this figured out, I've been at it for over a week now!
Cheers,
Xipher
use the ipod/iphone setting on SUPER.. it works fine.
stats555: Selecting Deinterlace: Slower, (i supose slower is best quality) did the trick for me, now i see the videos.
i also set resolution to h264 480 x 272.
File Size
So far i have ripped 3 movies usually about an hour and a half to hours in length. I have only seen an out put size in the 500meg range. Is there anyway to get these smaller?

Unable to watch movies fluently

hi guys,
I'm glad having a Xperia since last week....but I'm unable to run videos fluently - even with TCPMP 0.72RC1.
There was a "James Bond" trailer von the device when I have bought it, but it runs with 1 frame per 5-10 seconds!
even other movies don't play fluently.
Yesterday I did a hard-reset....but this didn't help.
Does anyone have the same problems?? Or a solution for this probs?
I even tryed out the "Turbo Speed X1 - Up to 8 X faster Performance than standard setup"...but even this didn't help...
//edit: there's no branding on the device...ROM: 1.02.932.3 from 08/29/2008
hi Cysign,
first i have to say sorry... i cannot help you with your specific problem.
but i have got a related problem. the bond trailer runs ok with my x1i... so i tried to rip a dvd for the x1 by myself using the following conversion-settings:
video: 480x270, h264, mp4, 25fps (pal) @ 796kbps
audio: aac @ 128kbps
this resulted in a 706mb file.
i copied the file via active sync to the 8gb flash card in the phone. all went well so far but when i watch the movie it looks somewhat "artificial". meaning that this movie looks like it was made by using a home-videocamera. (i hope this discribes it a little)
the bond trailer doesnt have this videoish appearance.
what went wrong ? are my settings exceeding the capabilities of the x1? or do you have other suggestions ? (btw, i tried to use the same settings as the bond trailer)
greetz
Did you guys trying increasing the buffering size in ur players? I personally use core player 2.0 and it plays perfectly but sometimes and this is rare but its like the graphics gpu is failing or something. All the images appear on the screen very slowly but a hard reset usually fixes that.
Guys, when I try to play the Bond movie, it prompt for license cert etc but it is still not able to play. How to resolve this problem?

which player?
that bond trailer ran pretty good on my x1a. i cant remember if i watched the whole thing or just to see how it ran but from what i did see, it was good. no lag or freeze up. i played it on the standard media player that came on the phone. i didnt play it thru the panel tho, i just played it by opening up media player. how were you running it? my x1a is pretty much all stock with no hacks on it.
i also had some movies that i ripped in .3gp format and from what i can tell, it also ran pretty good. i ripped these movies for my other phone (lg cu500) and my nokia internet tablet and so it also runs pretty good on the x1a.
i like ripping in .3gp because i can play it on any of my devices and the files are about 100mb per two hour movie. i think my resolution that i ripped my dvd was something like 480 x 240 but im not for certain. its kind of funny that not all devices will run mpeg because of the different variations of mpeg. kind of dissapointing when a product says it will a certain format but when you try and run it, it just so happen it doesnt support that perticular format.
Try Media Xperiance Panel, it is by far better than Core/TCPMP/WMP.
I think the media panel is the only app that support Hardware Accelerate in X1 at the moment.
but it doesn't play most formats and even some of my mp4s sadly
Similar problem here.
The only vid that plays well is the bond trailer.
All others (wmv) are played but with a horrible fps rate
Tried to start media player directly from the today screen and via panel... no difference.
Looks like a fast slideshow.

i tried both, playing via wmp and the media panel but the appearance of my ripped movie stays the same....
there is no stuttering but (as i said in my first post) it looks like it has something to do with the framerate. ?
btw, here is a readout from the program "super 2008 build 33" of the bond trailer:

I tried a My name is Earl episode a few days ago. It's in 1280x720 resolution so I thought it would be a good starting point for a test.
I managed to play it ok i media player at 800x448 or around there, but only with 600 kbps bitrate. It looked ok and played fairly smooth. I would say around 20 fps.
For recoding I used the Xvid4PSP program with modified default MP4 profile.
You need to use x264 (AVC) profile 4.2 and AAC LC (Low complexity). Then it should play with hardware acceleration.
800x480 resolution may be overkill, since the pixels are so tiny, so I would recommend a much lower resolution (600x'something') and around 600 kbps bitrate for a nice result.
I just run the 350mb (ish) avi files direct in Coreplayer.
Res is around 640x352.
TV shows are fine, and IronMan only had a few drops in the high action scenes.
Here's what I do with my videos:
Open PocketDivXEncoder on my pc.
Select HD-TV as the option.
Select the movies I want to endcode.
Drop video quality to 70.
Audio qaulity to maximum.
Resize video (keeping aspect ratio) to 400 horizontal.
Encode.
These all play in Coreplayer smooth as silk
I personally do absolutely nothing. I download a movie and just place it on my sd card and watch it through core player. It plays smooth with no compression at all.
try using spb mobile dvd to convert your movies, i've done this with some movies that didn't play smoothly and now they all work perfectly
Im currently using TCMP im just wondering if anyone has any ideas for the optimal settings for it
Cheers

what is a recommended buffer rate for watching videos?
Can someone confirm that the only player that utilises the media accelerator is the media panel?
I had thought that WMP also uses the accelerator.
Also what are the codecs the accelerator uses?
I've tried various MP4's and i've found only by lowering the resolution do I get smooth playback.
I'm currently going through the baselines for H.264 and found that baseline 3 does not play and baseline 1.3 does not get accelerated.
I'm currently (as I type) encoding a file with the baseline of 1 to see if that is accelerated.
I think we need to narrow down the exact codecs/media players/resolutions to use.

In super if you look in the video panel you can see the H264 Profile in the options section.
Click on the "H" button and the profiles pops open and select your baseline from there.
I've tried Baseline 1 now and still i'm not getting acceleration...the file still plays faster on Coreplayer than it does in the panel.
I'm wondering if this is because I have Jack's custom Rom using pubbas panel installer for the Media experience?
Also nobody answered me about whether or not WMP uses acceleration?

Nothing of this value change speed of video
I experience a constant lag (every 5 minutes) when listening to MP3, do you think change the settings of buffering can help?
Those settigns worked perfectly for my Diamond 2! First time a full .avi worked smoothly! thanks!

I've had this when the built in equaliser is enabled. I solved it by not using the built in equaliser but instead using Audio Booster.
I have no improvements with those settings :S Its the same but it isn't bad.
But if i see the benchmark the video is much smoother than playing it.
Edit: maybe a bit faster after opening a new video

Do you know the REG setting for this so that i dont have to set this over and over again when I flash a new rom?
No REG, settings is located in the config.xml in the Application Data folder...
//Nik
no difference
Hi, I see no difference or at least no discernable one, however I am using stock latest rom, i reencode all video and use wmp as hardware encoding is enabled through wmp api.The way you can play a decent quality with a decent bit rate 500 and above whereas coreplayer will struggle to play anything smoothly above 150.
An example. download any recent 350 lost episode and load and play it in coreplayer, this will be around 620x352 at a bitrate of 60-120 depending on the download. It will play and not too badly but will skip and freeze now and again. Reenode it using Mp4ForHD v2.6 using a higher bit rate and 800x640 res (phone standard res) and it will play perfectly in WMP even though you are using a higher res and bitrate as the hardware encoding is ised. There is no real need for coreplayer as long as you can be bothered re-enocding, if you cannot then you will have to put up skipping video.
coreplayer is greate for music and low res video as it has a lot of codec support however, A good purchase with this in mind.
WOW!!! It works on my Raphael..

For touch HD, just tick "Disable AVC Deblocking" at advanced tab, "soft drop tolerance" to 0.3 sec, and let other settings defaults. Enjoy your hardware-like video player.
P.S: Other settings must be default. I tried with the settings at the first post, just got worse.
512kb of video buffer is pretty enough, and I couldnt understand why no audio buffer and higher video buffer, since I have got even better results wih 256kb video buffer and 64 audio buffer.
Regards.

Hi, can someone post the default buffer settings, I have mucked about so much with them I have forgotten what they are. Note however that the soft drop change seems to be produce the best overall results in that you get the longest amout of smooth play in between frame drops and minor freezes. This is going to be different though depending on what we are playing. I wonder when discussing issues like this we should all agree on a movie or TV episode we can all download and then we are all reading from the same book. It should also be noted we are all probably using different roms which also adds another layer of complexity to it. I am currently using GRIDEVO 1.7B based on 28011 os, those that claim to have smooth playback, what rom are you on and what are you watching, ie whats the bit rate, size of file, codec used and image size.

Encoding MKV Files for Playback

Hello Everyone,
After much testing/researching, I have finally found the best solution to encode .MKV files to .MP4 for flawless playback on the HD2 using MediaCoder. I have tried many of the other methods and settings provided by others on this forum and many of them were good, but simply took too long or sometimes caused choppy playback on the HD2.
Note: These settings will work for any video files, I just happen to use .MKV for their quality.
MediaCoder Settings:
Format: H.264
Mode: Average bitrate @ 1200Kbps
x264 Profile: Baseline
Audio encoder: FAAC
Audio Format: LC-AAC
Audio mode: Average bitrate @128Kbps
Container: MP4
Resize: 800x450
Aspect ratio: Set PAR 1:1
With these settings I have tested 12 different files ranging from 500MB-1.8GB in size(720p quality) and the largest took 34 minutes on my dual core CPU (intel i5). First tried playing the files with HTC Album player and CorePlayer and the results weren't very good and they included a lot of choppiness. After reading some others success with WMP, I decided to give it a shot and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it played the .MP4 files beautifully and without a single hiccup.
Some of you may already have solutions for encoding videos for playback on the HD2, but I have found these settings to be perfect for anyone who wants to encode HD .MKV files.
I want to thank everyone who has contributed to finding the best method of converting/encoding files for playback, but I can honestly say these settings will give you amazing quality and smooth playback, even in the most intense action scenes. Give it a try!
Thank you very much as this was one of my next endeavors to work on and you just saved me tons of time!

Not a problem, I honestly spent hours upon hours encoding with different settings and players to get it to run smoothly. One thing I haven't tried though is encoding 1080p files. If you do, let me know how they run!
Sure will - I have very few 1080 files to try right now (may be 1 or 2).
+1
Someone should sticky this, perfect playback on my HD2 with these settings!
Thank you so much.
Just saved me a ton of time figuring this out. Used for a couple of videos and they play great. Thanks
The only change I made is resizing to 800x480. Flawless playback.

Tried these settings and although they were good, took about an hour to encode, longer than the length of the video in the first place. The settings I posted are to encode video files quicker, and with MediaCoder and not TMPGEnc.XPress.
Different settings, different program
Those bit-rates seem awfully low to me, especially if you're not using CABAC. Do you not get better results with bit-rates >2000kb/s?

There's also a different thread for video encoders, but too lazy to look it up. Guess it's better to have a new thread every now and then instead of having 50 new "How do I get my HD2 to play videos smoothly?" threads show up every other week.
My encodes take about 5-10minutes tops. Only when doing a 2 pass encode does it take longer and there's really no point in doing those anymore unless you aim for a specific file size.

No point in going beyond 2000Kbps as you won't see the difference and the files becomes too big.
Using a crf value of 21 usually results in a bitrate of around 1000-1500kbps.
What exact settings are you using to encode files in 5-10 minutes? Also, what are the file sizes? I am all for learning new ways to do things, I would love to be able to encode in that short amount of time. Let me know!

Depends on the source and of course encoding settings. I usually do a basic [email protected] Encode with --crf 23 and --ref 1(no weighted B-frames and no I-frames) for TV shows and [email protected] --crf 21 --ref 2 for movies. I also use lanczos4 to downscale to 800 x XXX.
Encoding also relies pretty heavily on the hardware involved so the better the hardware the faster the encoding speed. Currently running my i7 at 4Ghz and cpu utilization is 100%(for all eight threads). The software also makes quite a difference and I noticed that MeGui was the fastest encoder of the ones I tried(and it's pretty easy to use).

Sure thing i'll try that out. I'm running an i5 at 2.2 GHz and many of the other encoding methods took ages to run at 100% CPU usage (2 pass). Thanks for the info, I love learning new and more efficient ways of doing things!

2 pass and constant quality use the same algorithm so the quality is exactly the same.
How do I get .avi files to play in my HD2
What converter program should I use or are you all using? Any good free ones?

[Q] Video - got conversions right but new problem

So I must admit, from a video playback issue, I've never owned a more frustrating device. That being said, because I love everything else about the XOOM, I've been willing to work to achieve good results. I have achieved great video quality with encoding times similar to what I saw when targeting my iPad, and file sizes that are totally manageable. I have attached the Handbrake profile I'm using. I hope everyone achieves similarly satisfying results. I am using Rockplayer.
OK, on to my new problem. Whenever I adjust the volume and it brings up the volume slider, the video slows though the audio continues, dropping the video out of sync. I have to jump ahead or back to bring the video back into sync. It is similar to the lag in video playback that happens when I first launch the video, but in this case, the playback corrects itself within seconds. Can anyone help with this issue?
I've messed with my XOOM like crazy since getting it, constantly installing and uninstalling applications and files. Could this be an issue?
Thanks in advance for your help!
While using RockPlayer are you using software or hardware decoding? Go to settings, scroll to the bottom and see if hardware decoding mode is checked. If not then check it, but please note you will have to uncheck the box when you want to decode non converted formats like Divx, Xvid, and MKV.
P.S. If all of your video files are properly converted H.264 videos with .mp4 containers you should be able to use use the gallery application to play all your videos, and if you don't like the gallery application for videos you can just use a file manager like astro or IO to select the videos from their folder and play them with the built in video player.
I personally use Total video converter & I have no problems with my video or audio.handbrake just wasn't what I was looking for.total video converter works flawlessly.

Some people have reported similar issues when using HB for various Droid models.
Personally I use the build-in Gallery for video playback, because it makes use of the hardware acceleration.
If you are interested, I have a few samples of 720p and 1080p video files on my website that play perfectly on the Xoom. Links on the site will stream as well.
Yes, I'm using hardware decoding in Rockplayer and I always used Handbrake for my iPad and Epic without issue. When I use the native gallery video player, the problem is worse, as the video starts to lag just from bringing up the playback controls. This is very frustrating. I will try some different converters and see how that goes.
Dvdcatalyst, I will give a few of your videos a try and report back.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts.
DVD Catalyst works great. I use the stock player and haven't had a single problem.
(Change the video quality to 1750 kbs in the Xoom preset).
i have no problem switching to DVD Catalyst but have one question...does it have the ability to monitor a folder? One thing that is so attractive to me about Handbrake is the ability to use Dropfolders to monitor my DVR folder, automatically convert recordings and dump them into my Dropbox. This makes all my recordings instantly available when I'm on the road.
Thanks

I tried RockPlayer a couple of months ago, and when it was still in beta, but I always come back to the default Gallery. I have never experienced sync or playback issues on the Augen Gentouch, Nookcolor, Droid X and the Xoom, but have heard numerous reports from people for all of these devices (and others) regarding other methods.
For the settings I use in my own software, for all devices it has profiles for) I make sure it plays as it should without the need of installing a different video player. Only for a few older iPaqs and Palm devices do I recommend the install of something else (TCPMP), but for Android, Gallery (or a player like Act1 which acts as a layer around the Gallery player to add new functionality) never gave me playback issues.
Sorry, when I use DVD Catalyst with the XOOM profile, the video comes out a stuttering mess. Here's the info on the files I'm looking to convert...

It looks liek for some reason the framerate of the created file isn't processed correctly.
I noticed you used a SageTV Recording, could you create a small recording and email it to me, or maybe PM me a download link for a small (1-2 minute) clip?

Additional detail
Additional detail regarding my problem - what I've discovered is that the video plays fine but it's only when the controls from Honeycomb are overlaid that the video playback begins to lag. In Rockplayer, bringing up the playback controls don't cause the video to lag, only the volume controls which are native to Honeycomb. Any additional thoughts? I'm thinking about wiping the system and starting from scratch to see if that makes a difference.
Thanks
thanks, I'll have a look at it in the morning. I am working on a small update that includes new Xoom profiles (the settings mentioned on my website) and will take this along in the process as well.

Thank you!
Shocked but I think I figured it out
OK, I'm shocked that I've actually figured out where I was going wrong. The files I was converting and having issues with were recorded using SageTV from a cable box set at 720p. 720p is 60 frames per second and Handbrake was set for FPS to be same as source. When I changed it to 29.97 FPS, I no longer experience issues with video lagging the audio when I adjust the volume or bring up the playback controls. I don't know if this is an important find, but I don't think it's a limitation limited to the XOOM, as I noticed my conversions using the iPad preset are also limited to 29.97 FPS.
I think I can go to sleep now
