Hi guys!
i´ve just donwloaded the new opera 9.5 beta for my treo pro and at the beggining worked fine, but now, when i close the app, and try to re-open it later, it freezes and do not open at all. it only appears the name of the last webpage i tried to open. so i have to do a soft reset and will work again, but soon or later, it happens once more
what do u think about it?
i´ve tried to install it on the main memory, and it ´s the same
it doesn´t re-open after close it by clicking in the upper-right corner.
hi jumanjii,
I've had the same experience with the treo pro and opera mobile 9.5 beta. Basically if you use the built in task manager to kill Opera, it causes problems. There must be part of Opera that is not fully shutdown.
Until they resolve this, use the menu in the bottom right and select exit. This will shut opera down properly.
Im not certain but i think this is related to a bug with the opera widgets. Im not sure why but when ive had this problem sometimes the opera widgets folder/app is still running.
Id say get used to using the exit command in the menu, switch back to 8.6 or wait for the final version of Opera.
Skyfire FTW!
I vote for skyfire as well.

As far as im concerned international capability is a pretty key feature.

why would skyfire NOT work in any country except us and canada. its only a browser and thats it. It depends on weather u have a good signal or bad signal that mostly dictates how fast the internet.
Opera 8.65 works perfect for me. I haven't tried the Skyfire yet.
have u experienced very slow speed when browsing the net?¿?¿ i mean, with opera and internet explorer either. even loading google´s webpage takes ages!!!
Will IE 6 mobile be released as as installable app or will it only be available in ROM on new devices?

Skyfire's website says that the browser is only supported in US and Canada. Apparently you can put in random numbers for the phone number during the registration process and get the cab. So i stand corrected.
BUT, they still dont official support its use outside the US. I think the reason is that skyfire uses its own servers (probably located in the US) to render the page and then sends it as a compressed image; Being outside the us means your introducing a 200ms delay (for us aussies atleast) to every action.
*completely non technical comment: does anyone else find the skyfire ceo product demos to be a bit weird and off putting; They seem way to sure of themselves and dismisive of other technologies they are borrowing from; it reminds me of the attitude of people during the dotcom boom. i dunno...

Thanks for enlightning me about that I had no Idea guess I take somethings for granted here. To me though a browser is still a browser however now that u said the skyfire servers are most likely in the US it does make sense.
IRIS browser
Ive been trying the open source IRIS browser the last few days. Its been good so far, very thumb friendly.
Opera Mini
I still am a fan of Opera Mini which works great after installing JRebeiro_EsmertecJbed.cab
I will try SkyFire today though
Best web browser
I live in Chile, in south america, and SKYFIRE work with any problems... great. but i use this only for web page with flash content, like youtube or others 'tubes' ... but for the rest, Opera is the better choice. IMHO.

I use Opera 9.5 with Tf3D and haven't had any issues at all with it freezing or locking up or anything along those lines at all. Not sure if it is a function of the TF3D or the build I am using. The issue may be the build...
hi
with my blackstone i use opera 9.5 but with the treo netfront 3.5 rc9 is the best solution... you can download it for free on the access web site.
My treo Pro get some curious issue with Opera 9.5 : when launched, all my "sounds & notifications" choices was deleted, no alarms at all was selected. It happens every time i launch Opera !
Are you experienced the same Issue with Opera ?

Downloaded the cab, installed to storage card (the new version removed the old version), ran Opera, it asked me if I wanted to register (17 Euros), I said Okay.
Then I had to tell Opera.com my IMEI in order to get a registration code. I found the IMEI in Settings\Indentity.
When I received the reg code, I ran Opera, selected Tools\register, and then there appeared a box asking for the reg code plus another box showing the "Device ID". The device ID number was completely different from my IMEI, and needless to say, now opera does not accept the registration code. Now I have to write Opera for a new reg code.
So, I would advise all to check the "device id" that opera uses, and provide that number when requesting the registration code, rather than the IMEI found in your PPC's Settings.
Is it just me, or does the large icon for opera have a white background (rather than being a ransparent background as it should be)?

Just my two cents, I've been a big user of the data service, particularly browsing, and found Opera the best browser... almost. A much better alternative is to RDP home, and use whatever you have there. No more need to worry about user agent strings, java or flash, plus, it's (suprisingly) a lot faster. The VJ fullscreenTSC utility is particulary useful for that purpose.

Was thinking of trialling Netfront - Can i ask why you think Opera beats Netfront in your eyes?
Thanks
Matt
i was using netfront before i switched to opera and i must say that opera is the best by far.
I find Opera completely useless for most sites:
try www.o2.co.uk on both Opera and Netfront 3.3 and see the difference.
or try new.bbc.co.uk on both
THERE IS NO WAY I WILL EVER USE OPERA.

Because with the 'fit to screen' option, Opera resizes the pixs and everything on the webpages - keeping them in proportion with the text. Netfront doesnt, so you end up with horizontal scroolbars and unreadable pages, while the opera-rendered ones looks just like the ones on a regular desktop computer.
I agree, my experience with opera is bad. It locks up all the time and can't be dissuaded from dumping tons of temp data in main storage memory.
Netfront is much better. The fonts on netfront are a bit wierd and its no way perfect though!

Exactly - bbc.co.uk is brilliant on opera 'fit to screen'. I find it unusable on netfront.
Sorry, I meant to say the Opera is useless on Universal (mine MDA Pro) compared to NetFront.
I wouldn't use it if they paid me to.
One advantage is netfront 3.3 allows you to log onto more secure sites and if you fiddle with the settings does look and work better for me than Opera but they still haven't relesed the final pay for version and my trial version has ran out

I use Opera on my Universal since the first Beta and all I can say is that it's the closest you can get to a "real" browsing experience on the PDA. The only "better" sollution would be to use some sort of RDP, as mentioned above.
I don't know what you do with your Universal, but on mine, in TrueVGA, Opera is simply great.
Almost as crappy as beta 2! Still very much work in progress - few bugs havn't been fixed, map hardware buttons??, flash??!. Also i'm not sure about you guys but Netfront (latest TP - D2) seems to render about 90% of websites (using WiFi) much quicker than Opera and is more responsive too. What's up with that?!?
Has anyone read the press release fully?
Here it is. http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2006/05/31/
One bit that jumped out at me was this.

Has anyone seen Opera on a released T-mobile phone, or is it more likely the t-mobile have been holding up the release of ROMs in the UK market until they could put Opera out at the same time? If this is true then should we be expecting to see an AKU2 ROM for the MDA PRO with opera embedded sometime soon?

Combine it with FlexMail and you got a basic internet package on the go..
That said, I will give the new Opera a spin.. Why not.. Everything since I installed the latest DOPOD ROM has been working flawlessly and well I cant have that..

Considering that the opinions are so divergent, yet we all come equipped with (pretty similar) sets of eyeballs, I reckon I'm going to take screenshots of both netfront and opera rendering of common webpages and will post them here.
I am a web designer and think the differences of opinions are all to do with how the site's are coded in terms of fixed widths and such like in the html or xhtml and CSS.
Netfront is definitly better for me as web designer for checking on the fly changes for clients sites but for simply viewing sites informtion then I think the new opera mini works quite well and keeps data trafic low.
Hey guys what is the best browser on the vogue? opera, netfront, picsel?
Im waiting for my skyfire beta code btw cant wait to get it.
Opera mini 4 is great ---Skyfire was buggy,
already deleted it.
Don't like Netfront.
Opera 9.33 look promising.
But my favourite is still Opera Mini 4, very fast and very reliable. Ok so it doesn't support flash etc. but hey this is a phone!
I like NetFront. It hast a fast page load, nice zoom in out feature, and works well for forum and news sites. Still no flash but, no body has that working perfectly yet for PPC.

Yes, when you double tap on the webpage, it'll zoom out and show the whole page in the foreground and the zoomed in part in the background. You have to see to understand. I've tried opera 9.5 beta and netfront. Netfront is better right now for format when zoomed in view, although the latest opera beta is an improvement. Haven't seen skyfire yet, but I've read that it's not living up to the hype.
i love my picsel browser but it used to be slow as hell!! after a rom update and registry tweaks i got it as fast as opera so its sweet!!!! i just wish you could download straight from the browser otherwise id delete opera mobile, but opera mobile is the best browser pound for pound
I am a big fan of irisbrowser
Opera Mobile 9.5 hands down
If you really really use the browser to surf the web, the only real choice is Internet explorer. The others are really fancy but, for the majority of the website, reflow on IE work much better and a lot more stable.
Opera Mobile 9 will be the best when they came out. I am using the beta version it is great! It has zoom capability and reflow together!
Zooming alone like Netfont doesn't help if you really really us it to surf the web.
The other one hasn't been out of beta yet.
skyfire is hands down the best. i have experienced no bugs thus far and have not found a single site that does not work with it.

I just gave Irisbrowser a try. It's suprisingly good and fast. I'm astounded that this is the first time i'm hearing about it.
I find myself using Skyfire for most things. It really works well, especially for Digg and Drudge Report. The only problem is that the code on some pages it seems prevent Skyfire from properly reformatting the text to fit in the zoom window, so you have to scroll all over to read them. The most annoying place this occurs is Google Reader - there is just no good way to view this site on Skyfire that I have found. However, Opera 9.5 can view the iPhone interface of Google Reader (www.google.com/reader/i (instead of /m), so I use that when I'm browsing RSS. The version of Netfront I had was buggy, and cut off my data connection somehow when I minimized the app (couldn't get mail, check the HTC home weather, etc.). Prolly just a bad build, but Skyfire and Opera kill it anyway.

LOL! Yeah, I wrote a long email within Opera on my ebay account, tapping away, got to the end.... oops a typo, better correct that.... DOH! nooooo! the delete key becomes the back key. Yeah, plain stupid.
well DEL is used as back in every PC browser, but "should" be disabled when in a textbox.
Does anyone know of a fix for this? I currently select the text by holding down the shift and replace it with the characters I want, or go before the offending text and use Fn Delete. Its hard enough banging out some moan on a forum while on a train!!
definately agree with this one...REALLY annoying!
well that opera is way worse than it's desktop and mini counterpart
is there any way to uninstall it? and what's the best alternative for that?
USe MINI Opera or the Beta 2 - much newer Build
Load Opera Mini or the BETA of Opera 9.5
It is newer and faster
I'm using the 9.5 beta, it's much faster, and doesn't do that.
I looked at opera mobile website and it says that the latest version is 9.51b, is that's the newest? it has been from July!?
where to get the newest?
I have opera 9.51b installed on my Xperia and indeed it's much faster than the Opera 9.5 version which standard comes with the T-mobile branded version. However the standard installed Opera is still on my phone besides the new beta version. Does somebody know how I can uninstall the older version? It's not in the uninstall programm list...
waitin' for a good browser
since 3 years i'm waiting for a good browser for pocketpc or other small devices. but nothings happened yet. opera & iphones safari cannot handle sites with DHTML and javascript for a comfort surfing the web.
we can only hope for opera next versionen or the new pocket IE.
Strange! It doesn't happen on my Vodafone-branded X1 when I press the key slowly and carefully. But it does sometimes when I'm deleting more characters and press it repeatedly and quickly! I have originally installed version 9.5 build 2141 of the Opera.
for me, DEL acts like DEL - but ONLY in text mode!!! so everything is normal.
Sorry but the mobile safari Browser on the iPhone is very good. I can not understand anyone telling it is crap.
Sure some sites will not work - BUT THIS IS A MOBILE DEVICE !!!!
And on Windows Mobile the first browser which gives us a good experience in browsing is OPERA - still it is not as good as safari but it is good. Only not so nice that opera does not offer newer Builds.
There is beta 1 and 2 and the versions on HTC devices and on the X1 - they are all old builds so there is a big missmatch around.
THE ACTUAL OPERA MOBILE BETA is calles 9.51b2.cab
so the x1 operia is older than the official beta? strange cause the build number is lower...

Not SEX1's fault, bugs come from Opera, all devices use it have all the same old issues. We gotta wait for Opera mobile team to comes up with the next stable release.
Just wanted to give folks a heads up that new skyfire was released and it finally supports higher resolution. Before I would hedge between skyfire and Opera/IE due to the resolution issues but preferring the speed and support for Flash, etc...now this will eliminate a decision as I believe I'll be using skyfire 100% of the time.
More finger friendly menus were added to. Surprises me after all these yrs MS has not been able to make many improvements to IE Mobile.
On a side note it sounds like Mobile Mozilla browser for WM should be available early 2010. Its initially targeted at Nokia phone with snapdragon processor but will than move to other platforms
Just thought some might be interested in the update for skyfire.
been using it all morning. Very much improved. Especially like the fact it supports higher res phones now.
Sorry for double post
One thing I noticed is it seems to use a lot more RAM...not thrilled about that. Maybe they can address this in a quick update. Anyone else experiencing significant ram usage by the new skyfire?

Thanks for the head's up. I've been hoping for this update for a while now.
It does look good. I'll probably still use Opera for most things though, and this for video.
Yeah thanks for the update, made it my default and overall I love it. Only thing that Opera 10 does better is the rendering, you know the checkerboard pattern that comes up when you scroll around. Opera renders it faster than Skyfire but with that improved I would have no issues with it.
Oh yeah that and no option for default full screen mode. You can switch to it but once you use the menu you have to select fullscreen again

Opera 10 couldn't uisefully use the zoom bar anyway. Version 9.5 allows variable degrees of zoom, but version 10 only has two levels - zoomed in, and zoomed out. There's nothing in between. So enabling the zoom bar wouldn't actually help.
If you're having problems with the rotation then just use G-Config.

Once installed whether to storage or main, just do a soft rsest and it should auto rotate.
I am still messing around with it. I dont know if I should go ahead and make my default yet. The rendering speed is slower than the stocked Opera but I much favor the built in flash for web videos.
yummy
Loved skyfire from day 1, loving it more now that it supports better resolution. Rendering not as good as Opera, but that's expected for now, built-in flash works great still, but that's the advantage of cloud rendering. Typing works much smoother, wait time between skyfire sending data to server then back to your phone is much better. As far as mem usage goes, I think what they did with 1.5 is move some of the operations to your phone. Before with skyfire it was exclusively being processed on their servers. I think now things like putting in username and passwords are handled by the phone and sent in one swoop vs having to wait after you put in username, then wait after password and such. Also I've noticed that you can easily move from one field to the next. You used to have to re-tap each blank field, now it automatically moves the cursor and you can start filling it in immediately. Definitely a better browser. Maybe number one if they add tabs. I haven't made it default because of that. Unfortunately I'm out of the US so further testing isn't possible at the moment, but once I'm back I'll look at it more. So far the big face of is Opera tabs vs Skyfire built in flash.
Much, much more faster than Opera or IE. Of course the pages don't look as good but they're still good.
This new release inspired me to install Skyfire again -- I hadn't been including it in my "UC" configuration, so hadn't used it in a while as I flash new custom roms.
For me, the great advantage of Skyfire is how well it handles embedded video (and similar content) that other browsers don't handle well or at all. I stream live .wmv video from my backyard-birdfeeder-cam, and even PIE doesn't support this MS-format video -- but Skyfire does.

What ROM and Manila version do you have?
I have the official 6.5 upgrade for US T-Mobile (Timor version) and it opens Skyfire automatically from the internet tab after using Skyfire's setting to make it default.
There is a Manila file you can edit that will change all the internet tab settings for the T-Mobile stock Manila version I know, because that was how I edited it then.
So I guess it depends on what you're running.

It might also help to know which site's flash videos gave you the issue. Not all implementations are created equal.
I notice, on a sort of related note, that on thewb.com, sometimes the video and audio get out of sync. I'm not sure if this is a general skyfire thing or not, but I've always found thewb's flash player to be a little quirky, so I plan to test some other sites this weekend.

Skyfire has a server side and a client side--the browser itself doesn't actually support flash, the server grabs the content, converts it to something skyfire client friendly, and then transmits it to you. Google might be detecting where your skyfire server is instead of where you are.

Anybody here that could already tell me if it supports:
landscape
multi-touch
flash (what version, I amuse it is not 10.1, and does it finally work well?)
landscape - yes
multitouch - no (I am not sure if it's needed anymore, touch recognition seems to be working MUCH better, hence two levels of zoom should be enough)
flash - YES, dunno what version though... youtube works w/o any probs, so do flash ads, so I guess it's ok for a mobile device )

no worries mate. I just though it's a big news, so that's why I posted in here. other thing is, that this app is not hd2 specific, so...
put it on, don't know if I prefer it to Opera Mini I was using before...
EDIT: Rubbish compared to Opera Mini - taken off

Ok, sounds good. Might be the first time I replace my default browser
I really like it having used the betas but really missing multi-touch tbh. I've gone back to 9.7 for the moment.
So you can try this new opera next to the stock opera without problems?
I adopted Opera 10 beta after I "got used to it". I loved pinch-to-zoom in 9.7 and was convinced that I'd never get into 10 because of that, but I love the zoom-in and zoom-out that Opera 10 does. I do, however, HATE the way that they've solved the text reflow issue by having a setting for the zoom ratio, and just flowing blocks of text to that size. It's a pretty lame way to get round a genuine issue. Anyway, I'm still gonna big-up Opera 10 because it's just fast and smooth, especially when you change the user agent so that you stop getting annoying mobile sites.
Opera 10 FTW
What I don't like about it, though, is the display of pictures. Opera Mini shows things as they should be - doesn't zoom in as much. Now it could just be the settings it's used as default but Opera Mini seems to run quicker IMO

Go into Opera and set the address to opera:config to open the preferences editor. Scroll down to "User Agent", open it up and change the value to 2. Then click save and restart Opera.
I'm not gonna guarantee that 100% of sites will now be desktop versions, but all the ones I've seen so far have been, that were previously dummed-down mobile versions. (iGoogle in particular!)
Lol - sod's law! I just found one that still renders as a mobile site. Grrrrr!
prefer mobile sites personally - screen is too small to show sites in normal mode (this site in particular)

With other browsers I'd tend to agree, but with this version of Opera I have to disagree. I know I *****ed about the text reflow, but it does make pages a lot more readable, and works very well with a text-heavy site like this.
are You serious??? I always browse this forum and all the other sites in normal mode. in landscape I usualy zoom only to click a proper link, other then that I have no problems.

lol,typical.....ill try your settings though,cheers.
It's very nice IMHO but the "visual bookmarks" in Sense (orig. 1.66GER Stock ROM) dont's work anymore. The image stays blank. Anybody knows a workaround?

This prompted me to get rid of the internet tab and put Opera on my home tab as a quicklink. Not a solution, of course, but an alternative. With the start page in Opera 10, you don't need the bookmarks on the internet tab.
