I have a TMobile MDA that has the newest Tmobile rom installed. I have tried GSPmagic and Magic Button and both suck. GSPmagic cant close the phone or active sync, and locks the system sometimes if you dont use close All which closes everything , what a buggy piece of crap. Magic Button seemed to hog my resources and it had problem closing things as well. Is this a commmon problem or does anyone here have a solid task manager and it would be a plus to put the device lock on the task bar too. I DONT ASK FOR MUCH JUST SIMPLE AND SOLID.
thanks

Try InClose
Much better
Thanks Mark, that is ALOT better. uses half the system memory as well. Now I just need to figure out how to get the phone lock in my launcher or on the task bar.
Task Manager
I haven't tried InClose, but I use Truetoolbar and SmartSkey.
After having used allmost all available taskmanagers, i just assigned "Running Programs" to a hardware button. One click and u can manage your tasks. No loss in memmory or performance.
If you want to put the phonelock in the tray, you can use VJTrayLaunch with VJDeviceLock.
For a task closer, I use VJOkButt. But it purposely doesn't close the Phone or ActiveSync since they could be necessary files. To close those, use VJTaskKiller or VJPhoneToggle.

Phone can *not* be closed by *any* task manager. The phone all can only be closed by killing the cprog.exe process but that results a) instant soft reset b) freezed device c) flight mode turns on (depends of the device which happens, but one will surely do).
KTamas: I don't think closing cprog.exe will always have that effect.
I've done it quite safely on my Magician, except for one bug: trying to dial a contact from Contacts causes a crash.
On my Mio A701, closing cprog.exe will put the phone into flight mode.

how do you do that? I can't figure it out.
ILauncher v3.0 has a task manager that will close the phone pad which frees up program memory. It also has a traylauch. Ilauncher uses less memory than pocket plus.
Anyways here is another free taskmanager, install to phone the execute. It will allow you to see the process riunning and allows you to kill any process you want.
Inclose
Just downloaded and using Inclose. Magic Button was fine unti I upgraded the ROM. Then it went berserk. Never closed the phone pad had to soft reset. Let us see how Inclose behaves.... until now it is.
I use SmartTask with the Cingular 8125 and it is absolutely perfect:
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/smarttask.shtml
(ok, a few exceptions, like you can't quit the Phone application or else the phone resets. but otherwise perfect.)

Umm... How do I do this? Can't see that option in "Buttons" in settings.
Magic Button hogging memory?
Sorry, but you don't know what you're talking about...
Magic Button's exe only uses 4kb of memory!
If you wanna talk about a memory hog, we can talk about Voice Command porking up a whopping 4477kb of memory
As for a good task manager style app though (like the windows task manager), I suggest ITaskMgr:
http://www.iaccarino.de/silvio/ppcstuff.htm
Excellant task manager and it is free! It also minimizes to the phone's tray. Very cool app.
http://buzzdev.net/content/view/86/1/ I currently use that one and I'm liking it.

Yes, this Task Manager is great. Improved functionality on v1.5 - check the above link. And it appears to be very stable, I haven't had any issues with it at all.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that you need a lttle program to make it work.
Just install the cab and you have got the option in the 'buttons"menu.
^that's wonderful, I've been looking for that all along, nothing fancy, does what i want perfectly I can't stand all those task manager progs, thank you.

Thanks for your suggestion. I have this installed and it works sooooo much better than magic button.
It has a lot of useful features, like to rotate the screen. I can now rotate my screen to landscape when I'm using PIE without opening my keyboard. Also, if you want to minimize instead of close, you just press and hold the close icon and select minimize from the drop-down menu.

It DOES cause some CPU usage. I'll publish some more exact CPU usage benchmarks; when I tested, it caused some 1-2% CPU usage, unlike most other (decent) task manager tools. This doesn't mean, however, that it'll always cause that much CPU usage. Will definitely publish a big roundup of all these apps, along with their CPU and memory usage.
I have seen lots of posts that explain how to close running programs,
and how to get memory back.
But I would like to know how I can let software run continuously
in the background.
I put the exe. of the program it in my start-up folder, and after a reset the program runs.
But sometimes during the day I close all other running software, to get
back memory. But when I do, I forget to startup the one that needs to
run in the background continuously.
Can someone please explain how to let it run continuously, without
accidentally closing it ?
tnx.
Is there really no-one here that knows how to do it ?

It depends which soft you're using to close the whole set of running applications. Some of those applications managers have an option where you can put exceptions, so when you call the close all functionality, all the excluded apps won't be closed.
Cheers,
.Fred
or if u use vbar make ur program active and use the "close all axcept active" option...
How are you closing these apps?
As by default Windows Mobile keeps every app running in the backround (and is why you see so much talk about how to <i>really</i> close applications).

Windows mobile just minimize them. In order to close them, you have to post a WM_CLOSE to the main window of an application. This should in most cases be enough to close an app.

.Fred
tnx guys for your help.
I use Wisbar, but I am not sure if there is an option in it to exclude
a program. I will look into it and see if it works.
I was also thinking about making a change in the registry to
keep the software moving.
As I am not a tech-guy, I do not know if this makes sense.
So forgive me, if this sounds stupid.
Having quite the same problem, just another exe - the CardAutoRun.exe, just another device, a Prophet; see my thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=278672
I also have a TaskMangager, but there CardAutoRun is not visible at all - and I very seldomly use it to close *all* applications.
Yesterday I did a soft reset, after which the CardAutoRun worked for two tests with two different cards - then I simply switched off my Prophet (sent it to sleep), switched on again - and the next SDcard inserted didn't autostart (as it _did_ just before off/on).
Obviously CheckAutoRun gets kicked out by that automatic task managing of Windows ...?
I found out that Wisbar does a good job.
In Wisbar/Settings/Task Management you can clearly define which
programs need to keep running in the background continuously,
even if you close all at the same time.
It does not work
Now, I thought that Wisbar (or taskmanagers in general)
would do a good job. There still is a problem.
Yes, wisbar (or some other task manager) will keep software
running in the background at startup.
But as soon as I start Internet Explorer, the software that
should keep on running in de background is closed.
No matter how I configure the Taskmanager, as soon as I
start Explorer ALL programs are closed automatically.
Does someone know what is happening here ?
I hear about people using different taskiller apps and now I have been reading that these apps are the cause of some problems and that the phone "knows" when to close apps if it needs the memory.
So what is the verdict??? Are Taskiller apps evil or necessary or do they have any value at all???
I use Taskiller. It's a great app but I have to admit, I wonder about its effectiveness. I tend to 'close all apps' if there are a lot running but I've found that this often causes more problems than it solves. As an example, I use the footprints widget on one of my screens. If I close the footprint app using Taskiller, sometimes it causes the whole touchflo process to terminate unexpectedly. I've also found problems closing processes with Taskiller which are related to the social networking/mapping features. If you know what processes to put in the 'ignore' list then fine, but closing some processes can hinder the phone's overall function.
Sometimes, however, if you want to close an app, there's no way other than to use a task killer. Take Peep for instance. No way to close it other than killing it. So yeh, task killers; generally unnecessary but sometimes handy.
Most applications do not properly handle shutting themselves down on Android. Android itself does not close many applications automatically, so a task manager is needed. How ever the automatic task managers have a tendency to kill system services as well and can cause a lot of problems on the phone.

I guess that is ultimately the question....is it really needed???
I used taskiller in the beginning but after I stopped using it I think my phone is generally more responsive and better. Why? Because it doesn't have to start apps everytime I change screen or whatever. However I do have taskiller to kill apps that crashes or similar just in case. I do not use it frequently though. Instead I let the phone handle killing apps and whatnot.
So in my opinion taskiller is not needed because the phone takes care of everything that's needed mostly.
advanced task killer screwed up my text messages so i havent bothered with one since. luckily the device is just as as quick and responsive without it. so my vote is 'a' and 'c'
My favorite has been Advanced Task Killer Free. It doesnt cost anything and doesnt get rid of any vital processes that Android needs, especially if youre using SenseUI. Also, I have seen noticeable performance increases afterwards. So yes, I would say it is needed.
I've been using advanced task killer with problems. It seems to do what it suppose to but it also closes the radio for some reason. The rx signal comes back but the evdo doesn't unless I do a reset... I even payed for the advanced task killer thinking it would have more options but only has a hourly function.
Linux has it's own scheduler which handles tasks very efficiently.
no its not needed. i use to use advance task manager and it totally screwed and lagged my phone. not to mention i wasnt getting my sms because of those apps...i stopped using it and my phone functions great. if i feel that the phone is bunddled up with alot of apps i previously opened, i simply reset it (i hardly do resets because the phone functions excellently).
so no to task killers.
I had Taskiller installed, but after initially using it, I found that I wasn't bothered to use it, but it was still there with the icon at the top of the screen.
I read that they can actually slow your system down, so as I wasn't using it, I uninstalled it and maybe it isn't but the system does seem a little more responsive now
Vince
i used advanced taskiller and it kept my phone awake even when locked/lcd off. that murdered my battery. i uninstalled and use task manager now with no issues. it is not as simple as dragging down the notifications bar but my battery life is fine now.
I've definitely found that there is pretty much zero benefit to regularly using a task killer. Other peoples mileage will vary of course, and I'm sure there will be combinations of applications that don't sit too well together and cause issues, but I'm pretty confident than Android handles resource management well enough for most users.
I do wonder how may of those who swear by task killers are also using swapper, as I can well imagine that swapper will cause problems with Androids own resource management.
Regards,
Dave
HAHAHA guess you're not getting a clear cut verdict on task killers from this thread! seems like everyone has their own opinion....
There was an earlier debate on this topic. The thread is here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=569709&highlight=task+killer
and the android info is here (must read for understanding task killing) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=569709&highlight=task+killer
They work well when set up properly. No reason to be closing widgets and programs on your sense ui that you use on a fairly often basis because it will take some time for them to load when you want to view them.
Leave the stuff you use regularly open and close the junk that takes up resources that you don't regularly use. Most of these programs have exception lists for a reason.
People that automatically end all and close sense, or their system dialer files will obviously run into problems and lag when all that stuff restarts at the same time.

Exactly. They are fine if you exclude ALL the necessary components, then just have a few remaining on the main page that you know can be quit. Advanced Task Killer has been fine for me with their 'ignore list'.
i found that since ive stopped using task killer m battery life has improved quite alot
now i leave all the work to the android system
I have had the hero from day one and have had taskiller installed for about as long. I DID use it but do not now... and have no slow downs...
how?.......
custom rom....?
service which frees memory?
no...
Simply press back to exit a program and not home... if you press home the program most likley will not catch the button press and close. click back to exit and the program closes properly.
Press Back ....... this ISNT an iPhone with only 1 button.

I'm going without on this hard reset. On the last go around, even with disabling native sms app and using a 3rd party I was still getting the 100% awake time issue on the sprint hero.
FWIW, On a sprint hero make sure you ignore htiqagent, iqrd and omadm. Killing these will cause a radio reset, and ignore htcsense if you are using sense, which btw you can disable by removing its default setting in settings-apps-manage apps.
I think it is safe to say that I'm pretty ignorant about Android/Linux/etc. Nevertheless, I have Advanced Task Manager and I like to use it. I do use it judiciously, only ending certain programs/apps yet leaving most of that business to Android. And, of course, I use it to end the program itself.

Hey guys,
Just wondered if any of you have severe lagging problems at times, where i press to call someone but it takes up to 4 - 5 minutes to actually respond, or perhaps never responds untill i apply a soft reset.
I also seem to have noticed these occurrences happen when the battery symbol goes down a bar. I think that as soon my 4 bars becomes 3 i encounter some lag and general sluggishness on the device...
Sorry if this has already been covered in the forums, any help will be appreciated!
Dave
hey dude.
there are lots of lagging issues with windows mobile devices.... thats one of them main factors that keep windows mobile so unpopular.
im not sure how familiar you are with windows mobile OS... but if youre only learning, i can tell you that hitting the 'x', 'back' and 'home' buttons will not exit a program... it will just minimise it.... leaving the program running in the background, consuming all your resources (RAM).
the way to close all the apps that are running in the background is to go to:
start > settings > system > task manager
close all running tasks (similar to PC).
Im not sure if this is the cause of you device being slow, but it might be.
let me know how you go.
cheers.

Dutty's task manager ?
not too sure what duttys task manager is all about... im afraid i have never used it. the task manager i was referring too is the standard windows mobile one.
there are task managers and then there are task managers.
some task managers manage your tasks (pick up some milk on way home, take out garbage sunday night... those kinds of tasks - Outlook tasks).
other task managers (the one that will save your RAM), operate similiar to the task manager on your PC.
Cheers for the replies!
I think have installed that task manager (the one in the top right corner with a drop down application list) and that works a treat.
It's not a HUGE problem as I'd say it's fine 90% of the time. I've just been caught off guard a couple of times where i need to use my phone urgently and it just doesn't respond!
Would clearing up some space on the device smoothen it out? i have about 50MB left free
Cheers
Dave
Ive encounted this problem before. Ive flashed new roms + radios etc nothing seams to work it just sorted itself out over time.
try a new radio though think that helped out alot
I just got this phone and like it. But it has a huge, huge problem that I've not experienced with any other phone fresh out of the box:
The task manager is extremely aggressive! My widgets all freeze about 2 minutes after booting. And important apps I've set to remain in memory -- such as my alarm clock -- are closed!!
I don't understand why this is happening, but I'm hoping someone can help me solve the problem.
Thanks in advance.
