I'm guessing hardware failure. Something failed on a board that's under the L key. Pressing it flexes whatever is failed such that it causes a short or opens a connection/trace on the board.
its time to get 'er serviced/replaced.

doesnt sound hardware because the screen does it also. Maybe try a hard reset.

how did you backup your contacts?
Sorry missed the soft keyboard bit.
My guess is corrupted word completion file, since it happens on the first letter.
I am having a similar problem with mine only when texting . I f I do a hard reset will I lose all of the registry tweaks I have made along with my aGPS fix? If so that would really suck.

this sounds like a possibility. if you're having this problem, try turning off word completion and see if the issue remains... may be able to rule that out.
it got worse..it got to a point that i couldnt type anything, not even see the keyboard on the screen..i had to hard reset and lose all my contacts...i install outlook to only backup my contacts but it gave me error message..really bad..now since i hard reset all synch goes fine...too bad i had to hard reset..

I have a huge problem with my MDA compact III. The problem is, I have to hardreset my device almost everyday. Thats because all of a sudden the device acts strange and won't open almost every program. When I softreset the device then, the device won't pick u a signal. In stead of showing how strong the signal is, it diplays a !. Also after the softreset sms, mms or my mailaccount is deleted. I have never spoken anyone with the same problem or anyone with a solution. I only have Windows Live Messenger installed, but many people have and none of them have my problem so that doesn't seeme to cause this problem. It's really annoying and it's getting worse by the day. Yesterday I had to reset my device 3 times(!).. If anyone knows this problem or more important, knows a sollution, please share it with me cause i'm close to driving my car over my MDA
Tom
Are you doing an actual hard reset where you hold the two soft keys on either side of the chome wheel, then hit the sunken button on the left side with your stylus while holding the two soft keys and then confirming with the green talk key? If so, sounds like a hardware problem.
No not using the softkeys. I always perform a hardreset in settings menu, i don't know how it's called in english but in dutch is called 'opslag wissen'. Sometimes I get an error saying cold boot could not be completed blabla and then i have to confirm to hardreset.
Tom
Sounds like you are using the 'clear storage' option. Try the actual hard reset procedure and see if that fixes things...thats how I do it.
I just performed a hardreset using the the softkeys. I hope this will make a difference and solves my problem. If not, my MDA gets his first swimminglesson and I'll contact my insurancecompany.
I'll let you know it worked out. Thanks for you're help

As far as I know, this 'opslag wissen' is the equivalent of a hard reset. So it should not make any difference, unfortunately.
no it didn't make a difference. had to be hardreset allready. going over to plan b, allready filling the bathtub.
If you do teach it to swim, however, please post pictures.
O2 Trion. Does anyone have similar issues whereby the keyboard will stop working? Even mid sentance, it'll just stop taking commands. However, if I press space, it will pull the start menu down. I have to soft reset to correct.
Cheers!
keyboard lock
yeah I get the same problem now and again, I have to reset, also I dont always get the backlight working until half way through a sentence.
anyone got any ideas?

Hi.
I frequently send text message, and I've noticed that over the duration I've had this phone (about 6 months) the response of the keys has dropped.
When I first got it, I could type messages quickly and with about 95% accuracy.
Now when I type. I though the keys and frequently they do NOT come up. It first started with the "Circle" Key, now it's across most of them now.
Is this normal? Just general wear and tear? Any solutions at this stage?
Cheers
Edit: Using a JasJam, With WM6 Shaminix Grass.
Well, No lag is going on. Don't really have to push it harder either.
It's more of a needing to press the key twice (mostly) for it to come up.
Which is most annyoing as you type a sentance and you look what you've typed and it dosen't make sense. So you have to go back and edit it and etc..

Well, unfortunately in a way, that sounds like a hardware issue. Maybe a touch of oxidization on the contacts. This does not normally happen though when the keyboard is used often. The keyboard could be replaced, though whether that's worth it would depend on how bad it seems to you.
Just to be sure it's a hardware issue you could do a full backup and a hard re-set. Before loading the backup back on you could test the keyboard responsiveness (self evidently if it's better then it's a software issue).
Mike
i have the same problem too
Maybe you can try to detach your keybord and then use alcohol to clean your keybord.Maybe it will help.Beacause if there is too much dust in your phone, it will cause the keys touching problem.

ohhh.. sounds scary! i dont know how to do that..
I too have a lazy key on my device that needs a harder press but i would second what Mike said and try a hard reset. Make sure you have about 20 megs of free memory or more when punching out emails texts etc or you may see it skip button presses or give lag...depending on how fast you type (in my experience)
Hello everyone:
I've found a failure on my blackstone's g-sensor.
I noticed it wasn't working playing Teeter.
I tried to configure with the tool provided in the ROM but une of the bubles (horizontal) always goes back to the right side.
Tried hard reset, but still got the problem.
Is there something like a driver that I could reinstall, or should I send it directy to HTC??
Thanks in advance
If HARD reset doesn't work, I would suggest sending it back for repair.
- Steve
Yes, HARD reset didn't work.
The SOFT reset was the first thing I tried...
¿Wouldn't be possible to reinstall the software that uses the g-sensor?
The hard reset restores your phone to the state it was out of the factory. No additional software to the preinstalled stuff is required for the G-sensor to work. If immediately after a hard reset the G-sensor still does not work, it's 99% a hardware problem. The reason why hard reset is suggested is to make sure that other software possibly disturbing what does not work (the G-sensor software in this case) are removed, but, again, out of the box the phone already has the software and drivers needed for each part of it to work.
By the way, the calibration error is a clear signal of the problem.
Well my friends...
The g-sensor failure issue has been solved without HTC's help...
Maybe using the Advanced Config tool, I changed the Gsensor value (don't know how to translate it, in spanish "Intervalo de muestreo del acelerómetro").
I set it in 200. Today, as my last attempt to solve it, I changed it again, to 150, and... et voila!!! It works!!!
The strangest thing is that I made several soft reset, even one hard reset (yes, a hard reset, I know how to do a hard reset), but it didn't worked.
It seems that some changes we make with this configuration tools, stay the way we set them, even if we make a hard reset... Is this possible?

Definitely, I've found the 1% that always bothers us in computers...
I still tend to think that your sensor was "stuck" for some reason and after a bit of moving and shaking the device with normal use it got "unstuck". The stock settings are always correct for basic hardware features, and are the same for all users.

Maybe you're right.
In fact, I've changed back the value back to 200 (ms.), and it still works...
But it didn't get unstuck by the normal use... I tried it several times. It happened only when I changed that value.

By doing a hard reset this value should be reset to default, so if you really did a hard reset, it probably wasn't a software issue at all.
I don't have any explanation. Maybe it was just a case that it got unstuck in that moment, maybe not, and changing the setting caused something in a microchip of the G sensor work again... No ideas.

Yes, a hard reset, switching on the PDA while keeping volume down pushed, as the user guide says...

OK, at least, if anyone reports same problem, this could help.
Hi,
I m facing the same problem as you described, my horizontal tube is stuck on the left side.
I tryed to change the polling interval setting without effect.
I discovered a weird (from my point of view) inside the registry. The calibrate2-? is set set at a very hight value (only 1 in binary).
Changing it by a registry editor doesn't work, it goes back to the weird value when i restart the device.
Can you tell me if you had such values when you experienced the problem ?
Thank you
Hi again,
You know what ? i m happy
It was a pure physical problem. I give on my touch hd a little pinch on the left side and it unstuck the problem.
Everyone must know that it can happen. No change inside the registry is needed. You just have to shake a bit your hd to make it work again (if you break it i m not responsible )

I had this problem after I traveled in a bus on a bumpy road with HD in my pocket - No pressure fall or anything. I am surprised to see so many had his problem. Hard Reset was no use. I shook my HD vigorously and this solved it. I was worried if this baby gets a Shaken baby syndrome by the shake
Lol! You remind me of my car stand. Each time I am on my car with the HD on its stand, and I bump into a hole on the road, the screen rotates for a short while (due to the G-sensor). This is annoying, but funny... I think I will add TomTom to the exceptions list.

Had the exact same problem, sensor was stuck on the left. I was about to retire the HD and go back to my rhodium when found this post.
Pinching didn't work but a minute of VIGOROUS shaking did the trick! Still looking for my stylus which flew out ... be careful when trying this at home children
Yay, my HD lives!
Please advice where can i find the advance config tool? i'm facing the same problem

Hello. I've searched all over, and haven't seen this problem anywhere. Once in awhile when I send a text, it'll send a bunch of gibberish. something like this: ???a???n???d and so on. some of the letters are there in between question marks and upside down question marks. Might be 3 or 4 lines of this. It used to only happen to one perticular recipiant, but now is doing it to several. Might not do it for days, or might happen 10 times in one day. It did it before I rooted my phone, and still does after. I've un- and rerooted. No change. I've rebooted when this happens, sometimes getting it to stop, but not always. I did a factory reset, and it didn't stop. This was all using the factory texting app, so I downloaded handcent. Guess what? Still did it yesterday. I'm about ready to throw this thing against a wall. Anyone have any fixes? Thanks in advance for any help!
Is the gibberish there using qwery or virtual keyboard? Is the gibberish the "alt" equivelent of the letters you are trying to type, as if the alt lock is on? Maybe you're just pressing alt twice and locking it on.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using telepathy and unicorn dust!
Its the qwerty keyboard. I don’t use the virtual one at all. The text is usually a question mark or an upside down question mark with the letters I'm trying to type in between. Like this: h?e?l?l?o?. And so on... Btw, it looks fine on my screen before I send it. Looks fine after I send it too.

In android you get the upside down question mark by holding the question mark key. But I'm guessing this is a problem with the phones receiving your message. Very often unrecognized characters (like apostrophes, or accẽnted symbols) will convert to the upside down question mark on ****ty phones. All smartphones can usually recognize these characters.
Are you sure their occurrence is random and not when you use certain characters? Are you sure this isn't just happening on one recipient with a ****ty phone? Can you recreate the issue so it is not random, or is it entirely random?
At first it was one person with a crappy phone, but its happened to 4 people, 2 are smart phones. It might only happen once or twice a week, but when it happens, it gets like stuck in a loop. It will happen every text that I send to the affected person, while other texts to other people are fine. Don’t really know how it finally goes away either. Restarting my phone worked the first few times, but makes no difference now.

Sounds like it might be their phone having trouble receiving the text correctly. but then at the same time if restarting your phone worked (possibly just a coincidence) then it has to be from your phone. you might try reprogramming to your network i think it's *228 and listen for the option to reprogram or you could just try updating the roaming and stuff with the same number different selection. idk if it will work but it couldn't hurt right?
