Got my X1 today, frustrating... - XPERIA X1 General

Hi there,
so after waiting for weeks on my delivery i finally got it today. I was soo looking forward to this phone but now am deepy frustrated with it.
Build Quality:
Looks nice, build quality is ok. The battery cover doesnt seem to fit 100% and the screen has a bit of play when the keyboard is out, but i think thats quite normal.
Screen:
I actually thought that it would be bigger, dont know why but when comparing it do my old Nokia E65 its not that much bigger as a phone. Of course the display is alot bigger, but far from iphone dimensions.
This is my first touch and WinMo Device, i only played around with an ipod touch of a friend before.
In direct comparision i have to say that the iphone still is miles ahead..on the X1 you have to press pretty hard to get clicks and flicks recognized correctly, thats quite alot easier on the iphone/ipod.
Anyway, still works quite good and i could be happy with it.
Keyboard:
My first device with a keyboard, so i cant compare. Can work with it pretty good, not perfect but definatly very good.
Windows Mobile:
Yeah well, what should i say. The interface of WinMo is not exactly made for finger navigation and its but ugly. I know thats how Windows is and we have TouchFlo and the Panel stuff for that, so i can live with that too.
I installed TouchFlo 3D, TomTom and played with some emulators which all didnt work right...seems to be the resolution causing problems...
Anyway, by now i have the device for about 10 hours and it crashed for about 20 times...FRUSTRATING...
it started with touchflo 3d...after using it for a bit and then hitting the panel button always makes the device crash.
Now i cant even switch to keyboard anymore, as soon as i close they keyboard => screen black, device off
This afternoon i had i laying around in stand by for an hour or so, trying to wake it up from standby => nothing, it turned itself off.
So after countless reboots i decided to hard reset the device using this manual => http://img395.imageshack.us/my.php?image=x1iresetknopfsystemmenap6.jpg
But even that doesnt work, it just boots normal...WTFF am i doing wrong, this is so frustrating...
i soo wanted to like this thing, especially since it costs over wh00ping 700 EUR, but its not even worth half of that...wtf
Anyone knows how to hard reset this piece of **** ?

Hmm that should work i would believe. I think thats similar to the method used for the Kaiser. Can you get into the settings or does it just freeze up right from boot? I know there is a way to reset it another way. I think u have to interrupt the startup several times

iam sorry for you
it's sad to hear that but i appreciat your honest informations because we suffer a lot of the owners who give unhonest informations .
iam sure someone will show up shortely to tell you how to hard reset the device since i don't have it yet.
but maybe if you look at the manual you may know how .
if you can make a favour for people such as me who is still doupt to buy this device or not specialy what you have said was running in my mind and it's very dangerous and important , if you can make video with your phone with mp4 format ?
i asked manytimes anyone to do that and noone has given a clear answer about this point there is lot of doubt about that and it will make a big deffirence in the future if this device if it can't make video with mp4 format so it's such a piece of crap and doesnt really deserve even 10 euro
thanks and good luck

I agree the screen is a disappointment, but I went into it knowing the dimensions. Their choice to go long and skinny is ok I guess. Its basically a 16:9 aspect ration i believe, but it just doesn't translate well when other phones have way more screen realestate, but the same diagonal size.

Hard reset is done by pessing and holding the two buttons below the srceen (the softkey buttons, the one with the little silver stripe on it) and pressing the reset hole (online visible by taking the battery cover off and using the stylus) until the screen shows a massage there you have to press "R" and after a short while you have to press "Space". Then the X1 is doing a hard reset.
By the way TF3D is working ok on my X1 just taking decades to load the first time and I don't like the interface. Spb Mobile Panel is imho better, faster but my favorite panel is the SE Panel, many information and a starting bar too. My X1 didn't crash one time by itself only because I tryed cleaning the Registry and stuff like this.

When you start the hard reset procedure, is your phone off or on?
I've had to do it a couple of times after installing software (most software that is currently out there is not designed for the phone and has some compatibility issues).
Make sure the phone is off (not just in standby - take the battery out if you need to), press both thin silver buttons closest to the screen, and switch the phone on. Hold the silver buttons until you come to a white screen with instructions on what to do next (I think it's press "R" to do the hard reset, then "Space" once it's finished.
It should then start installing WM.

hello,
i have also trouble by using TF3D . So after deinstallation the device works much stable. But i´m waiting for the fist 1.0 release of TF30
Daniel

hot it to hard reset now. It works when pressing the silver buttons and inserting the stylus into that hole on the back...
Strange because what i read on several sites was to press the silver buttons + power button.
hard-reset worked, so i am off for a new and hopefully better start. Thanks for all you tips.
@haam1978
i will try that out and post here

thanks and i hope the device will be better after hard reset
let us know if everything is ok or not after hard reset
and waiting for your video
congratulations and best wishes for you

@haam1978
it actually saves to 3GP which is a container for MPEG4, h.263 or h.264
So quality wise that should be alright, dont know which codec the X1 uses..
@all
now after hard resetting i have installed the SPB mobile shell and TomTom, now it again crashes as soon as i close the keyboard...will uninstall both at look if that helps...
Another question: Do your devices also have some play between the display and body when the display is out ? Left/Right there is no play but there is little play when moving back/forth

thanks for your reply now it's clear this device can't shoot video as they announced. shame on SE !!! world goes forward and they go back .
now i started really to worry even hard reset didn't fix craches in your device !!!
this doesn't sound any good at all , installing tomtom ans SPB should never make this craches , it looks like your device has a problem with the Room but i think it's the same room everywhere in the world now !
i saw many comments about the loss between the keyboerd and the device so it's not only your problem it's in every device .
now all owners of X1 should comment about this crach and see if this is a general problem or only in your device , everyone has to give help here to know exactly what's wrong
please all owners give help for our brothers here
with regards

well now i have the same issues again and found out that its a hardware issue :-(
When i slide out/in the keyboard gently everything is fine. When i let it flick into place the device ist instantly off. Am i not allowed to let it flick out/in without holding force against it?

ofcourse you are allwoed and now it's clear there is a problem in this device
hurry up and call your seller and ask for a new one don't loss time hurry up

yeah will do...but thats still leaving a feeling of insecurity whenever i flick the keyboard out on the new device i guess...i also question the quality of the mechanism...would that last for 2 years without breaking ?
So after hoping for not having crashes and issues others had, i now have a mechanical defect on day 1. Cant say this device is of great build quality anymore :/

Sorry about your HW issues. Sounds like a defective unit. I don't think we can say the build quality of all X1s is suspect. Maybe there should be a HW issue thread?
Mine will be delivered today so I can let everyone know if I have any HW issues. Where did you get yours?

Dude Ive got an xperia myself and honestly, it never crashes. Once it froze for a minute but thats is as far as have ever happend. Also sometimes tf3d gets very laggy but thats it. And I got mine on day one, 10/10.
Maby you should return yours?
As far as video, the video quality is really really good in bright enviroments, when it gets a bit dark it starts to become sluggish. But I dont really get it? It was supposed to be able to capture video in MPEG4, h.263 and h.264 @30fps but there is no way to change format. What the?
Cheers

Here's a printout of the videoformat using MediaInfo on a sample recording.
The sound samples at 8 kHz, nothing to give standing ovations for. The framerate is close to 30 fps when it is bright. When it is darker the framerate is far from 30fps.

Yeah sound is not good, although I actually think its pretty decent video capturing overall. Id like to try changing format from MPEG4 and see how much it'd differ, in better or worse.
Anyone get any idea how to change format?

@haam1978
by the way, MP4 is just a container format like 3GP
both support MPEG4 or H.264 codecs which can deliver high quality, so i dont really understand what you issue is about not being able to record in MP4.
Its the same, basically...

QTek 9100 high-res photos, impressions and benchmarks!

People wanted photos... here (note the forum software here seems to be broken so you'll have to actually click the photos to see them). Sorry about the blurry backlight keyboard photo - its pretty hard keeping still for 4/5ths of a second!
Enjoy!
Any chance to have some photos taken with your 9100's camera so we can compare the quality with JAM?
Thanks for the photos!
Awesome! Post your impressions!
Here!
The above post was made entirely from my 9100... pretty nifty. The camera quality is pretty terrible (as expected), the flash barely does anything except for at extremely close range (as the sample photos demonstrate). The flash stays on all the time when its enabled but when you finally press the shutter button it goes slightly brigher.
Overall, the device seems very robust and solid. The only slight downfall I've observed is that you need to make sure you slide the screen squarely or it will get jammed. It is a little bigger than I had hoped for, but still definitely pocketable.
GPRS, WiFi and Bluetooth are all easy as pie to setup and the flashing LEDs make it very easy to see exactly what you have enabled. I haven't noticed any real slowdowns, unless I have a ridiculous amount of applications open and then try to switch to landscape... oh, and the stylus can be annoying to get out/ put in (I'm used to it being on the top of the device and I'm not used to a telescopic stylus). The screen also feels very bendy/ stretchy, like the air-gap between the glass and the touchscreen layer is pretty big. This means that you have to press quite hard for the touchscreen to respond (I'm used to a feather-light touch on the hx4700). Other than that it feels fine. I'll post more after I've had a play. I havent even connected this thing to a PC yet!
Sound quality is superb! I thought I'd find the headphones that are supplied with it laughable, but they're not half bad! There is actually bass (not much, but its there) and crisp high-end frequencies! The question is: Is the limiting factor the headphones or the amplifier. Unfortunately I don't have a 2.5mm->3.5mm converter to hand to find out.
The earphones dont really fit my ears well (none do) so I might look into doctoring them by attaching a 3.5mm jack after the little volume slider box.
I'm quite an audiophile and I find the sound quality quite acceptable, it definitely wont replace a dedicated MP3 player, but if its all you've got it will do fine.
can you post a picture of your device info. my kjam says 195mhz on processor speed and I have heard that the qtek says 200mhz. but that was a pre production unit. can you tell me if yours says 200mhz or 195???
This one has it's clock set to 195MHz like the K-JAM.
Also, if you're totally obsessive about the condition/ resale value of your devices, you dont need to open the sealed CD (its sealed with a Microsoft label). All it seems to contain is ActiveSync 4.0 and Outlook 2002.
Another thing I noticed - on the side of the box it says "802.11 b"... I'm not sure if this is different to the K-JAM which says it supports 802.11g among others. Has anyone bothered to see what the throughput is on the K-JAM?
The benchmark is in. Use the contents of these files at: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/benchmark/handleresult.php?en
These results are taken from a fresh hard-reset hx4700 and a fresh hard-reset Qtek 9100. Yes, I realise comparing a WM2003 to a WM2005 device using such software isn't particularly fair... but it does accurately show how much slower the Wizard is (especially when it comes to writing files straight into flash ROM).
Note that the storage card results in the Qtek file should be the same as the "main" filesystem results since its reading from/ writing to the same place (I don't have a miniSD card yet). The reason the Qtek outranks the hx4700 in the graphics department is because the hx4700 is a VGA device.
The battery results for the Qtek 9100 are with the GSM radio activated.
If you've been monitoring the reported bugs on the K-jam on HoFo, it'd be interesting to see how the 9100 compares and whether you find the same bugs.
Also a little concerned about the wifi only being b spec not g. Can you test this?
I just switched my Wireless AP to "G Only". This took out my old laptop with a B card, however my Qtek 9100 was still able to connect fine.
Also, I've been messing around a bit more with the camera... and the photo quality is abysmal. My Nokia 6600 took better photos!
It's amazing they couldn't put a better camera in such an expensive device. What's the point of 1.3 mega pixels of noise?
I totally agree. They may as well have just put a 300kpixel camera in there, the quality would have been the same.
my guess is that those pictures were taken too close to the keyboard for the lens to focus on it. I saw some pictures from a k-jam and, while still not that good, they were much better than these. I believe the same camera unit was used in both.
The camera's focal distance is terrible. I compared it to a Sony Clié which could take a crisp photo of a sheet of paper about 5cm away with only a 300kpixel camera!

I've just got a pair of 9100's to replace our old 6310's. The first one I opened (and gave to the wife) is as responsive as my 4700, even with a PPC Tech screen protector on. The second sounds just like yours ShALLaX, definately more squishy, even before I put the screen protector on...

I know... I'd send it back to Expansys, but their K-Jams's have slipped again, and I don't know how long I'd have to wait for another 9100.

Yeah... I'm sure I'll survive too.
Pretty much got mine all setup how I want it now. With it all customised you do start to notice performance issues but I'm willing to overlook the sluggish programme start times because of the awesome functionality.

Just to say hi & experiences so far

Just registered so HELLO EVERYONE
(soz if in wrong section)
Just getting into this PPC Mobile phone 'stuff'.
My experiences with mobile phones so far is the god awful Siemens A60 (could not get anything into it games etc WAP ££$$ only crap). So far, about 3 text messages a month, less than 10min talk time so not exactly heavy useage!
Then on ebay I say an Xda Exec (Mint) which was then described in the listing as faulty!!!! HoHo, 80 quid later and the most simple hardware fix I've ever performed & I've got my grubby mits on an unlocked Xda Exec !!!!!!! Shoved my orange pay-as-you-go SIM card in & bosh - it's a bloody mobile phone t'boot.
As you can imagine I'm still picking my jaw up off the ground, this little device ROCKS (I got it with the mind to fixing it obviously and then selling it on but it's now 'a part of me', so to speak - plus going to the bog is not boring anymore (ahem  )
So I just had to get Doom, Quake & Quake II to run, Lemmings, Age of Empires, Snails & to top it off AND (after mucho head-scratching) WiFi Connection at work and hence internet access (from the bloody carpark I ask you).
Then another MAJOR discovery - TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player) v0.71 DivX player (GO & GET IT - IT ROCKS) and 'Lathe' DivX encoder (GO & GET THIS AS WELL!!) - cartoons & films compressed to less than 100mB (be it from MPEG or DVD VOBs) in under an hour, over onto the SD RAM card & bosh MOVIES ON MY XDA!!!!! (hell TCPMP even works on my mates SPV-C500 mobile - THANKS FOR FINDING THAT ROB!)
Now I've order BlueTooth USB dongle for my PC that I can browse the internet at home at the same time as my wife hogs ebay to death.
What's that crappy McDonalds advert say?.. 'I'm Lovin' it'!!!!
Andy
BTW: The ONLY thing I dislike is the wierd WM5 - for the last 20years a red 'X' means 'stop & shutdown program' & now some tosser marketing 'guru' at MS has decided 'hell no, lets completely change that to something else' . . I ask you!!!!
Oh, & before I forget, poxy ActiveSync - what a weird convoluted mess that program is! Anyway, once I get my BlueTooth Dongle then I'll activeSync via that connection - I know this is not a simple task to do, but again me & my mate Rob got it working on his SPV-C500 using his BlueTooth LogiTech DiNovo Keyboard connection!!!!
Check out smclose to fix the close button

There are other ways too
You sound as English as an Englander could.
"Bob's your uncle" I'm a Londoner (reluctantly) myself! Nice to hear a friendly voice.
Good stuff on the Uni. Have a good read around. There's a thread on here somewhere about speeding up the Uni. Skip the extended memory installs and sort yourself out a nice system
V
Yo
Cheers me ol' mucker, I'll take a butchers @ speeding it up - I was wondering about that so n1 m8, does seem a bit bloated out with O2 crap (none of which I have even touched yet, probably just self promotional bull anyway 8) ).
Andy
PS Got me there for a min, I was thinking wots a 'uni'.... Got to now get used to calling my Exec a 'Universal'.....
I'm dying to know, what was the fault on the Exec?
PS Good luck with Activesync over Bluetooth, it's a bloody pain to set up sometimes.
Me again.
The unit was sold as not being able to power on (regardless of SOC of battery).
I purchased it regardless because of the error in misdescribing it - those people who were seeking a working Xda Exec would then find out it was faulty & those seeking a faulty Xda (that would otherwise have been sold for >£140) would not easily find it as it was not listed as faulty - if I could not fix it I would have simply relisted it correctly & made a quick 60 quid
Anyway, 4 torx screws later & a bit of prising the case easily came apart to wit: I was faced with... not much really (everything is screened by tiny metal boxes inside). HOWEVER I was not surprised to find a small Li-on button battery inside (hard wired to the PCB). I removed the battery to test as a friend had pointed out the fact that the power on circuits may need this battery to operate correctly (as an electroins engineer I could not see why this was the case though).
I removed the battery & attempted to charge it from a current limited variable DC power supply that instantly went into current limit at 1 Amps - i.e. a classic failure mode of duff Li-on batteries. Now if this is the case then attaching the main battery back would cause that to instantly drain, would not be able to charge & hence you would never be able to turn the Xda on!!!
Now, with the little memory back up button battery removed I reassembled everything, & put the main battery pack back in. I then connected it up to my PC via USB and a little orange light came on... my pulse racing a bit now, I pressed the on / off button and the LCD came on.... Blank!!!! NOOOO I thought..... for about 2 seconds before being greeted by the geogeous O2 splash screen - bugger me if the damn thing works... AV IT!!! I THOUGHT.
One Xda Exec (which 1/2hr later was unlocked) for the princely sum of sod all!!!!!
I'm still laughing into my pint a week later!
Andy
Nice one mate pld.
welcome aboard.

How is Age Of Empires working for you? Because it doesn't say that it is WM5 compatible and 640x480...
@emmerman,
As to the game requirements, I don't know, just that it was PPC/ARM (Xscale) compatable - regardless game plays perfectly on my Uni, full screen and although its obviously harder to see things I'd say its more playable because of the stylus!!!
It rocks so install with impunity...
Andy
I couldnt get it to get past the "Register Game" screen on mine when i tried it. phone froze up and i could only quit the game by closing it in settings>memory.
I only installed the main application, and installed it to SD-card.
I'm using VGA though, not sure if that was a problem.

OK, just looked at my uni...
Today, I be mostly running:
Microsoft's Age of Empires Gold Edition (ARM) v1.07
From ZioSoft Interactive / Ensemble Studios
ahem, ahem, DE00AORJ0EU7 *cough* *cough*
Andy
Oh, & it's installed on my SD card.
i never got that far it wouldnt let me click on register. It went landscape, but upside down when in laptop mode, and wouldnt accept any inputs.
I recon it could be cause of the resolution, but might not be....

By default they're 320x240 - so not sure exactly what you're seeing. Do a search in thses forums for OzVGA, there's a several threads about it.
I Don;t Believe it!! (it, not you).
You're saying that we pay for a 640x480 display AND THEY DEFAULT IT TO 320x240???
You're kidding, right???
Or am I missing something here
Andy
PS
I didn't actually pay that much for it, but I find that incredulous anyway!

Have I changed the colour resolution by mistake?

I did a search so I hope this hasn't been asked a million times before. I have noticed that I may have lost some resolution on my XDA Mini S
I synchronised over a photo – that I had taken with a camera, I had it as my ‘screen saver’ on the today page – looked good. Really clear just as you would expect
I noticed a day later that the screen saver looked a bit rubbishy – then I checked my photos on the phone and they all look like they have lost resolution – there is a distinct lack of colour and clarity. Almost like an Andy Warhol painting.
Taking a photo also produces the same sub standard quality - so I'm hoping that I may have done something by mistake that is easy to fix.
I have had the phone for 3 days and apart from the photo have also uploaded Wisbar onto it - apart from that I haven't done anything
As a side note Bubble Breaker seems to have a lack of colour as well – although admittedly this could be my imagination.
Any help greatly appreciated!
You cant change color resolution on your screen its 64K and fixed. What screensaver are you using? It may have a bearing on your problem but it does sound like a graphics hardware fault. Do a hard reset just to be sure of this though as this will rule out any software conflicts. How to do the hard reset is in the manual.
Thanks Mark
I think you are dead on - I did a hard reset and it still looked rubbish
Also to back up what you said :
If i look through the camera/video capture anything with red in it is all fuzzy and hazy, whereas everything else is 'perfect', and
Importing the photo back onto my laptop the photo looks OK so it's def what the xda is displaying and it seems an issue with the colour red.
Many thanks for your help - doh i hate getting a new toy and returning it straight away!!

Comparing with Universal/ Jasjar

Shall we compare Athena with HTC Universal? The hardware features, quality, built in software, speed, everything?
Let's try:
- Athena is absolutely uncomfortable as a phone
- Athena is a little bit larger and heavier
- Athena is more expensive
+ Athena's screen is much bigger
+ Athena nave embedded GPS
+ Athena have HDD
+ Athena have VGA-out
+ Athena have VueFLO (but is't really useless feature)
+ Athena have 3 mpix AF camera
more?
When people have the Advantage/Ameo etc, it will be more appropriate to make comparisons that one can agree or disagree with.
Just FYI - some live photos of Athena

Thanks a million for those brilliant high res photos Bader!
It's nice to get a real world perspective of size on the X7500 against other devices and equipment. If you don't mind, I'm going to post a link to the site you listed here, everyone who doesn't have one yet and is interested will appreciate these pics. Thanks again.
BTW I will be posting here:

Thanks Bader.
Any chance of a first impressions review? Or feedback on performance with 3rd party apps compared to other devices...like Universal? I know, I know...you were probably going to do that before I opened my big mouth last week.
Anyway thanks again for your contributions, they are appreciated.
Actually Bader...there is one very important question I would love to be answered...if your willing of course.
Can/have you tested the USB host capabilities of the X7500? I mean can you hook up a full sized keyboard and or mouse, or even a external hard-drive?
This would be huge plus for me personally, but I think others would like to know too. Cheers.
Unfortunately, I don't have Universal now, but in any case I'll put here are some feedbacks:
Performance is good enougt, f.e. "windows" folder is to be opened in one second
700 Mb movie is loaded in 3 minutes via USB (2.0?)
Original DivX movies can be watching wo recoding with at least 80% efficiency (parhabs depends on embedded ATI Imageon chip, now I'm tryin' to tune it )
GPS works worse than in Artemis - probably cause of metall body
Battery is really good - about two days while books reading, movies watching, push-mail recieving etc.
Camera - ghm... SonyEricsson's one is better
No vibracall!
What else? Please ask
About USB-host - unfortunately, I don't have the the cable to try this function (I've got the device in test package). VGA-out works well.

The normal htc USB cable should do. Connect the mini to your Athena, and the regular usb end to your drive eg. pocket drive, card reader etc.
gps athena
gps worse than the one of p3300? 1º slower to take satellite? 2º fixes less satellite?
Great stuff Bader!

Great stuff Bader, thanks for the feedback. So GPS is worse than Artemis? Is it acceptable though? Or do you experience weak signal and drop outs, in comparison?
You say Divx plays at about 80% without the need for recoding? That's not bad depending on bitrate. (I'll PM you about this). Are we talking like torrent movie encoding quality here? DVD rips? I hope so, because then there is a lot of room for improvement.
Didn't expect much from the camera anyway.
No Vibra call? Glad I ordered me a vibrating Bluetooth Plantronics 640 now.
"700 Mb movie is loaded in 3 minutes via USB (2.0?)". Is this via active sync straight to the device? If so, that's not bad.
I like the windows folder opening time. But is that on a fresh machine or with loads of 3rd party apps?
How about surfing in high res mode? Is this supported in the ROM version you have? And if so, how is the speed of page rendering compared to your experience of other PPC devices?
Thanks again for taking the time and effort to answer these questions Bader. Pls check your PM.
What is your model? Advantage, ameo or U1000?
How is the building quality?

I're wrong - USBhost is based on another slot than sync/charge USB. It is good seen on this picture - http://foto.ixbt.com/?id=photo:57887
Left one is VGAout/USBhost with proprietary connector.

I'ts only my opinion, based on expirience - it seem to me, that Artemis finds sattelites faster, and sesitivity is a little bit better. Unfortunately, i cannot compare and measure, cause Artemis was sold 4 month ago
I any case - Athena's GPS wokrs much better than any 12channel device.

About movies - yes, sure, i mean DVD-rips on maximum quality settings. If set low details - so performance comes to 200%
About loading speed - yes, 3 minutes via AS or WM5torage - no any difference
"Windows" opening time - it on real used device with about 20 thirdparty apps installed.
RealVGA is not supported in current ROM :-(
But there are Opera installed (in ExtROM), and it's posible to scale up and down - looks like real VGA. Rendering speed is about 2 times faster than on my Herald.
PS I'll answer PM in few minutes.

Seriosly - building quality is perfect.

how long in minutes to take satellite?
http://foto.ixbt.com/?id=camera:703
Warm start - about 2 minutes
I just got the T-Mobile Ameo today, the branded version of the HTC X7500.
With the exception of the silver casing (instead of black as on the X7500), the Ameo is the same.
Here are the first impressions:
1. build quality excellent, display quality very good (but not at par with the Sony Vaio UX "micro"-laptop for example), speed is very good too, the programs just "fly".
2. GSM/GPRS reception is pretty good, I didn't have the chance to try out UMTS/HSDPA yet since I'm living outside the city and we get only Vodafone UMTS over here
3. you can't use the unit like a normal cell phone, you need to use a headset or the built-in speaker phone. This is pretty annoying, making the Ameo actually more a kind of a internet working machine, not a cell phone. If you're planning to use this baby for everything, including "classic" cell phone operation, forget about it
4. if you think that the new magnetic keypad is interesting, wait until you actually see the WHOLE "system" working incl. the leather protection casing.
You can't actually use the magnetic keypad without the leather casing since the Ameo itself may "fall down" sooner or later, causing a lot of damage to the unit if it falls down from a higher height. Use the leather casing, it provides the necessary "grip", so the Ameo doesn't move at all to the back.
It is a pretty interesting and well thought through combo, you have to see it for yourself to understand how it works. The pictures you may have seen on the internet, showing a woman holding the Ameo in her hand, attached to the magnetic keypad are actually CRAP. The Ameo has no support in the back and if this woman would move her hand a bit, the Ameo would fall down. I don't understand why T-Mobile doesn't advertise in pictures the whole "system" with the leather casing, so people understand how it is working and how WELL it is working.
5. inserting the SIM card was kind of a pain in the a.., it wasn't too easy and you can't swap SIM cards on a regular basis, this would be too annoying.
6. the new Opera browser is a treat, it works great compared to the also supplied Internet Explorer. The Opera 8.6x browser was a good choice for the Ameo.
7. the built-in 3 MP camera is easy too use, it uses an autofokus which works pretty well and it even has a flash. Picture quality is pretty good when there is enough light but the object has to stay steady if you want to get a good picture. Video quality pretty much sucks, if the object moves, you just get a blurr, nothing else. That said, the specs of the camera are more impressive on paper than in reality but it is pretty "usable".
8. since the keypad system uses a strong magnet, you have to be careful where you transport/keep your unit in the leather casing. If your credits cards, etc. are close to it, you may have them corrupted.
9. after installing my "usual" programs (Worldmate, AgendaOne, WiFi Companion, Subsembly Wallet and GPS Meter), the Ameo started to be kept in an incontinouus booting cycle (like a soft reset). I had to hard reset the unit and start all over again installing my programs, pretty annoying. So the firmware DEFINETELY isn't bug-free yet.

Brilliant!

Thanks Bader!! That's really good news, just what I was hoping to hear so far. C PM.

Initial Comments - Got Mine

Wow! It is fast....
I know others have said this but I must reinforce that. I have been running WM6.5 on my (old!) HD for a while and with the new manilla 2.5 (sense) UI it is clearly struggling a bit. I am sure that Dutty and co will improve on that but the HD2 is clearly much more able to handle this impressive UI.
Just got mine from T-Mobile UK so here is my initial feedback to those still drooling over the videos and pictures:
Appearance - Looks great, actually feels slimer than the HD - I know it is but you will see what I mean when you handle one. The curved back (like i-phone) makes it even slimmer at the edges than the 11mm measurement would make you think. The screen looks great - you can see the dots across the screen in certain light reflections (directly across the screen) but I have not noticed any at all in use - just with bright light at shallow angle across the screen. The screen is noticeably bigger than the HD, same brightness. The screen edges are also (as reported) closer to the edge which adds to the impact of screen real-estate on offer.
Only adverse comment on design is the sharpness of the edges to the camera lens surround - the lens edging is sharp enough to damage furniture so beware. HTC need to fix this one. It is minor on the scale of things but completely at odds with the rest of the device which oozes quality.
Branding. T-mobile have put their mark on the phone - nothing externally but the boot-up and shut down splash have T-mobile branding. There is a T-mobile (Web & Walk) spalsh screen that pops up when you start Opera (otherwise completely standard) and there is a T-Mobile IM tool that has failed to work so far.
Unboxing - my box (standard green HTC box just like the videos) had no pouch (leather case). I called T-Mobile and they will be sending one but according to their list they have no mention of either the pouch (that is what HTC call it) or the (miserly) 2Gb miro SD card. There is no (micro) CD like you see in some videos and apart from standard HTC stuff there is a T-Mobile folded sheet about something - was far too busy plying with my new toy to read the paperwork...
Software - all the usual stuff is there. Notes is in 'Outlook' and there is no Co-pilot software to test for 15 days (unless its on the micro SD card (not checked), just ordered and downloaded Co-pilot 8 because it looks great on the HD2.
Camera - the pictures are great and it takes photos immediately - it really has no lag at all on almost anything. The flash is actually quite bright.
Performance - did I say it was fast? Vista sync with PC was faultless, everything just happens immediately - this is also enhanced because apps are never actually closed. There is, as reported, no HTC 'X' task manager to close apps so they are just minimised. So when you start them up again in fact all you are doing is lttbbing back to the app that may already be open. The result is near instant response and when you select, for instnce, Google Map, it is not only already loaded but has maps present too (albeit the last maps). Opera is much faster than on the HD. IE is still very poor by comparison (BTW - Opera is called 'Web & Walk' in the start menu on this T-Mobile phone). The "My location" function just works - on GPRS, HSDPA, WiFi ann PC sync. Weather looks really neat!
Initial Software Loading and trials - just had to hard reset! I installed Monocube Safemode and could not then start-up the handset in other than safe mode!!! Not impressed - wonder if that is something to do with the capacitive screen.
Resco Explorer 2008 - great
Coreplayer - installed OK but noticed that 700Mb DivX film had audio sync problem. This film and this coreplayer version on HD seemd to have no problem.
more to come when I have re-loaded the software and re-synced - don't use Monocube Safe Mode.
I cannot rule out something else having cause the need to hard-reset but it only occured after my first power-up after installing the sotfware. I will report this to Monocude (who make it) and report back if I get anything.
Love the phone - very happy.
This is my first HTC and to be frank, I LOVE IT. Maybe because it replaced my SEX1?
Playing music is a delight, the speaker is amazing. Had to reduce the sound to 50% as it was too loud.
Picture taking, could be better, but as I'm used to SEX1, I can say its impressive.
Fast? Fast? It's lightning fast. This device changed my opinion towards WM. I was appalled, but now I'm extremely happy.
Only one annoying thing, when there is no data connection I get this pop up every time I turn on the phone, which is quite annoying.
Overall, I give it a 8/10. It could very easily be improved with ROM updates.
But why did they make sms notification so small?
I got mine yesterday. (Donated by a certain someone, you know who you are . )
Gotta say it truly is one of THE most amazing pieces of mobile tech I've seen in all my years as a technician. For the 1st time I can finally say winmo users finally have something that knocks the socks of the (in my opinion) now defunct iPhone and indeed any others available to date The speed of everything on this is just amazing, never did I think winmo could achieve this. Of course HTC did an amazing job covering over winmo you really never see it for anything.
I've been reading reviews online and in papers (ya I know, paper, im so old-fashioned sometimes lol ) and all the reviews say the HD2 still couldn't beat the iPhone etc so I was holding off buying it. But don't listen to the reviewers they're just too critical, this phone really is the biz, go get it.
Also, as this phone has no Hardware Keyboard it can be a bit tricky at first. I used to refuse to own a phone without a physical one but replacing the default HTC softKB with Fingerboard and everything is perfect Some minor tweaks and videos, battery etc are all working above and beyond any media smartphone I've used (and Ive even used the iphone for 5 weeks).
Anyways enough of my wild ravings about the phone. If anyone wants to know anything about the HD2 gimme a shout, happy to answer anyone
Just got mine today from.... Vodafone!!! Can you believe for once they've got it out with everyone else????
It's every bit as good as I'd hoped (not surprising as I'm stepping up from an early Tytn).
As tony wheeler found though, you can be too clever.... I originally had an XDA 2 with TomTom Nav 5, forced my Tytn to load it years ago and long before TomTom supported it (in fact I'm not sure they ever did). Tried to force it on the HD2 and all I got was a corrupt screen and it froze. Only needed a soft reset to get it going again, but a bottled out at that point.
I noticed that my favourite game (Bubblet) is missing (I'm a simple soul) and so far I cn't get .tsk skins to load properly, but hey - it's only day one.... plenty of time yet.
Update: sorted Bubble using hints and tips at the top of this forum, thanks TB!! Also, got my skin working by pasting it into the windows folder. It then appears in the advanced Today edit screen.
Lag in messaging
Guys,
people have been complaining about the messaging application being laggy especially for contacts which have long message trail...is this correct? Are you experiencing it?

Eh, not really.
Ive already got 113 messages (+25 on my SIM) on mine and not noticed any slow down or lagg. Also have loads of emails and no slow down on the email tab either.
Mine arrives tomorrow via DHL, looking forward to it.
Moving back to WM from iPhone, been playing with iPhone for the last six months. I have always been a WM believer, but I always look and test the competition in the real world. Then I have a opinion based on first hand experience.
While the iPhone has many nice features, when it comes to business it isn't as flexible or useful as a WM device.
That's not to say WM doesn't have issues, it does. That's for another thread though.
iphone switch
I will be interested to hear your honest opinion of the HD2 compared with iphone.
The IP screen and nav functions are very fluid, but I think the HD2 is equal or better.
The HTC Shell makes a huge difference.
Without it I would have bought an iphone myself, and that is saying something!
