Hi all,
I've looked through the first 7 pages of this forum and can't see this question asked or answered anywhere.
I have my shiny new O2 XDA Ignito sitting in front of me and it is crying out for some sat nav software.
I have looked at TomTom navigator but from reading some of the posts on this site it appears TomTom 7 is the vogue. What are the differences between the two?
Is Garmin's mobile sat nav any good?
If I go for TomTom where is the best (sorry cheapest) place to buy it from on DVD?
Cheers.
Matt.
Garmin
Garmin Mobile XT is fantastic. I have it on my Tilt and it's as good if not better than the GPS in my car. It does turn by turn verbally which is a must. It even works in my pocket. You can have 3d maps or regular. It has traffic and automatic re-routing. It comes on a micro sd card and once you plug in the card it asks if you want to install. That's all there is to it.
The maps are great and detailed. The options are many. I love my Garmin and can't figure out why people aren't jumping on it. It's a one time cost rather than every month. Garmin is a great company to deal with and will be around when many of the others are gone.

Does it come on CD/DVD though as the XDA Ignito (HTC Diamond) doesn't have a card slot?
Matt
My dad got a seperate GPS unit with the Garmin CD and it can install and show the map just fine, but cant use the internal GPS so that's totally useless. Of course that GPS brick should be optional if your phone includes a GPS (I mean you pay for it regardless).
Had to aquire that online special version just to get the thing working
use TomTom Navigator 7 - specificly developed for the VGA HTC Touch Diamond. Works perfect for me.
TomTom, it's perfect!
i use igo8.
found it to be better than tomtom.

Rang Garmin and after 20 minutes they answered. They conformed you can buy their software on DVD but you have to buy the GPS receiver as well... something to do with unlocking the maps using a receiver code or something!
So as a result it looks like TomTom is the way forward for me.
When I go to the TT website it makes no mention of TT 7 and yt loads of you guys on here appear to be using it. Where do I get it from and how much is it (I know Navigator 6 is £87)?
Thanks in advance guys.
Matt.
TomTom7 is superb, in terms of obtaining a copy, a mere google search would probably locate it straight away, free or paid for
Would definately go for TT7 as they are what I would call the market leaders (for Europe anyway). I've used both and perhaps gotten used to TT7, but I have been using it for TT5, TT6 and now TT7 and it works with great map support for US, Europe and Australia. Suggest you google or download the cab from numerous folks here (...search!!) and then buy the maps (whatever) accordingly!
i have both tomtom7 and Garmin XT...diference is in refresh...TomTom refreshes position like 0,5 s and Garmin 1-1,5s
But i preffer Garmin ( we have better maps for our country for Garmin )
hey man go nav n go IGO8!!! better than tt7: faster, prettier & full 7digit postcodes in uk fresh speed cameras waypoints etc

I spent much of yesterday (to my wifes disgust!) searching this site and google for a link from which to download TT& and the only one I could come up with was this one

Just looked on their website at IGO 8. The site states that it will only work off the original SD memory card... Diamond doesn't have a slot!

TomTom?
IGO?
Garmin?
McGuider! (aka Sygic DRIVE)
Works absolutely great on my Diamond, uses a nice black theme which fits perfectly, has lane guidance, detailed spoken instructions, nice fluid 3D graphics, the lot.

Where could you buy TomTom 7? I have Navigator 6 installed and can't find a way to buy Nav 7.
ok great thx, for all this aswers
could you please make screenshots of your navigation software?
how does it look on a 800x480 screen? resized, black bar, skewed, small icons.. ?
thanks.
There will be a Co-Pilot specific version coming out - http://blog.copilotlive.net/?p=208
I presume v7 works fine, but just doesn't make the most of the resolution.
Guys,
If you have a Navigation program 'successfully' working on your machine could you post it at the topic 'Programs/Utilites & Games ~ working on the Touch HD' here~ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442663
Thanks.

How did you get the software up and running?
Whenever I try to start the program (installation works fine), it crashes after the starting screen saying the specific resolution can't be loaded/found.
Have you changed the sys.txt in any way?
Where did you get you version from.
Did you try the skin supporting 800x480 resolution?

TomTom Navigator 6 working on HD
Is it possible that someone can check if TomTom 6 Navigator is working on Touch HD because i want to use this application that i already have.
It wil make my choice very easy then!
Thanks
Why would HTC make a phone that, on the face of it, seems to have a lot of programs that just won't work, particularly my (ancient) TomTom6. And what about TCMP ? How would I run my videos ? I'm after one as well, but am now a little nervous that it may be false economy.

Me too. I got my Touch HD this morning and tomtom 6 won't even start up. I think part of it is because of the screen resolution of the Touch HD
Garmin Mobile XT 5.00.20wp works fine (have only tried SA March 2008 mapset). So far no obvious problems experienced though I have not extensively tested everything.
I also loaded MobiTrak's HandyMAP Pro PPC V5.2 (Build 1129) with SA and USA maps. The program Handymap2.exe fails when switching maps, and once a map is opened it won't open again (file not found error). A soft reset does not fix this problem.
I tried installed 3 different versions of TomTom 6.01 & 6.03 (I'm licensed) v7.XX (out of desperation I wanted to see if I could get any version running)
Version 6 gives memory access violation.
I sometimes get the TomTom opening in triple tiny view at the top of the screen.
I can't install v7 it says this version is not suitable for this device.
I've spent hours on this and I just can't get it to work. Has anyone else been experiencing this? Can anyone that managed to get TomTom working, tell me how?
Many thanks,
hy,

Hi,
Many thanks for trying to help but I've already seen this post and unfortunately it doesn't help. I tried to install the same version 7 but it says something like device not compatible and the earliest version of 6 that I have been able to find was 6.01.
I've spent many hours on the this problem, I've already searched here and all over the web. It looks to me like only a few people have been lucky to get it working.
If I don't get Tomtom working soon then I'll be sending the Touch HD back. I would appreciate any suggestions. I don't know if it's possibly an issue about missing dlls.
Thanks,
ok thats strange, but i cant help you anymore because i dont have any Touch HD.
But i hope for you that someone will help you.

The problem is that Tom Tom6 maps won't work on Tom Tom7. If you have a world wide collection of maps like me, it's going to cost a fortune to buy all new maps.
Has anyone figured out a way to get Tom Tom 6.03 working on the HD? Surely it is a matter of tweaking??
Edit: It's not a matter of Tweaking. I found a 7.450.9028 cab in my archives from another one of my devices. I was surprised to find that this version WILL work with TomTom 6.75 maps but not lower. Fortunately all of my maps were 6.75 so I'm good to go The only thing/problem is the text and keyboard are small.
I've managed to find an old cab file for 6.00 and it worked straight away! It has all my previous maps and POI from the memory card working fine. I can live with using 6.00 instead of 6.30 so long as it's stable/reliable.
Cheers,
Hi Matterhorn!
I hope to be trying this later today. What steps did you take to try to install Tom Tom 6.03 ? I have this from my TyTn II CD and updated my maps a few months ago.
I have Tom Tom home installed on my PC and was hoping to get Tom Tom home to see the Touch HD as a new device and install to it.
I will post here what I find happens with my attempts.

TOMTOM 7
I own realy a Touch Hd. For 3 days now.I've installed Tomtom 7,450 VGA.
It works perfectly and with Gsen even horizontal.
I also didn't notice any GPS lag. So what are those people talkinh about.
I suspect that I the only have an HD in their imagination.
I have version 6.010 and i installed it, i hoped for a working install but it doesn't work at all, boot logo from tomtom is showing after that it's crashing like hell, so i founded somewhere a 6.000 CAB file and that's running perfectly on the Touch HD. very strange to me , normaly should newer version have more compatibility solutions.
TomTom 7.450 works on HD
try to find ttn7 with 12.063 MByte. This version works very fine and I'm surpriced about the GPS speed.

Is there any difference is speed when using 2D or 3D maps ? I read somewhere on this forum that someone experienced better speeds ( no lag ) using 2D maps ?!?!
I use Destinator 7 and I am looking to buy HD within a month. I am wondering if anyone can share their experience using Destinator 7 on this device.
Cheers.

A few people are saying that ttn7 works fine for them. It didn't work for me but maybe I just got a duff cab/version. But as licensed (v6) user with lots of maps and a traffic subscription (the subscription would probably be ok but maps definitely not) I prefer to stick with version 6 for now. Tomtom looks great on the big screen and is quick smooth and reliable so I'm happy. Done some short runs with gsen and all seems good there too.

My only concern is ( see:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443782)
Daniel
I use Nav4All, works perfect and is free..
After over six weeks finally an answer from TomTom - could not be worse, it reads:
"Navigator 7 is a software product that is only available as an exclusive offering that comes preloaded on specific handsets that are available only in Europe. As such, unfortunately we do not have a Navigator 7 solution for your handsets. Outside of TomTom’s policy, our exclusivity with the handset manufactures prevents us from complying with your request. We do apologize for any inconvenience."
Is that no the best way to loose customers....
Although there are other ways to get TomTom 7 on your Xperia, that sucks indeed.
Looks like you won't get an official one. That sucks of them to be honest. I'm not an 'honorable' customer myself as I use a cracked one. But this is a fail-safe way of making paying customers go away.
If they won't sell it, that's their fault...
There are plenty of places to get TT7 on the net and it works a treat on the X1.
IGO8 is so much better than Tomtom anyway. I love igo8.
TomTom 7 - v7.910.9185 is the latest version available to download, works great on x1 but I agree igo 8 is better.

Not really.
IGO has no automatic intelligent traffic rerouting based on real world traffic jams. No automatic updating of speed camera's (fixed & mobile). Igo does have a clickable navigation screen though. I.e. you can click on something your passing and see what it is. Tomtom 6 misses that, don't know about 7.
for me, tomtom 7.910 works like a charm
Did you have to do anything special to get 7.910 installed on yor X1. Everytime i try it comes up with device not supported.
Do you need to be connected to the internet to use tomtom7?

There is however a workaround. Download Resource Hacker, open a copy of TomTom Navigator.exe and remove the resource under HI_RES_AWARE. Save the file and replace on device.
Then I would recommend to install the navigation panel to easily run tomtom in landscape without having the keyboard out. If you use panels, that is ..
The text in the statusline is getting bigger as well, and portrait navigation is a bit narrow.
hello,
i've got tomtom 7 installed on my HD2 but the keyboard is extremely small. any idea how to fix that? changing in to large in preferences doesn't make any difference, it's about the size of the status bar on the bottom. the same version of tomtom on my i-mate 9502 works fine. any ideas? thanks.
Make room for a small one
Ironic as it sounds but go into your settings and change the keyboard to smal... its the same on the HD from what I can remember.. If it dont wok dont flame me as I dont own either device but did this on my mates HD and it worked ;-)
didn't work for me.
You need wvga version instead of qvga
I have tomtom 7.916 and the keyboard is perfect. Maybe you have an old tomtom version ?
I have found by using the BSB tweeks mod and enable the TOM TOM Prog to turn to landscape when you turn phone, the keyboard is made much much bigger
thanks for your replies.
small keyboard is the same as large, doesn't matter what i chose.
also, i don't know where i can get the wvga version as the only one i've got is the qvga.
i have tomtom 7.450 which is not newest but it worked fine on my vga screen in i-mate 9502.

We're not allowed to post links to warez sites, but if you were to look at the usual suspect ppc web sites I'm sure there are ways to activate your maps
As far as I know TomTom don't officially support the HD2 yet, but there are ways around this. If you have a legit map and legit TomTom software I personally don't have any issues with you using an alternative source for your downloads.
