CAB's......Keep or delete? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV Themes and Apps

This may seem like a silly question, but once i've installed a cab file do i have to keep it in the program file folder on my internal storage or can i delete it to free up some memory?

You can delete the CAB after install, there's an option in Advanced Config to do this automatically for you
Dave

Thanks for the quick reply. Appreciate it....

Or you can keep the .cabs in a file named apps, so when you flash you have all your favorite apps at hand.

I'd also go for this one!

I keep mine on the internal storage so they are not robbing vital memory, but ZIP them in one file just to save space and tidy things up. Nice and easy to unzip if I ever flash the phone! (or the next time I do it, seems to be fortnightly at the mo).

Keep them. Best place for that is the internal storage. Sadly mine are in a folder called "Current" as I seem to be flashing on a regular basis (Swiftblades fault as he keeps updating his ROMS)

Oops, i've gone and deleted them all. But i've got them all on my pc anyhow. Prob put them back on my phone again then. I was just trying to free up some memory as i've only got around 20mb left. Not much considering i've only got 1 theme stored and a few additions on top.
Where does all the memory go to?

PIM.VOL file to SD Card

Has anyone found a registry tweak to move the PIM.VOL file to a SD Card? My PIM.VOL is topping 5 meg and would like to free up some space.
I have the same problem. What does the PIM file do?

Nobody has a clue ? Would be great to move these large files to either the SD Card or the Ext ROM space.
Buzz ?

The pim.vol file contains all of your contacts, calendar entries, and tasks.
As far as I'm aware there's no way to move this to SD card. And that's been the case since my first PPC phone, so it probably can't be done. If it could, then I'm sure some bright spark would've figured it out by now.
Looks like we're stuck with it in our Storage memory...
For awhile I had both a PIM.vol and a PIM.volc - one was 9MB and the other over 8MB. So needless to say I was running out of storage memory even though I put almost everything on my SD card. Anyone know what the second one was for?
I found a setting in the registry a while back:
HKLM\System\Platform\DataPath = \
I wanted to have a fiddle and see if I could move the .VOL files into a directory rather than the root, but I figured that this was one of those hard-reset-if-it-goes-wrong moments.
Is this the right setting? Is it possible to copy the .VOL files somewhere else, change this setting and reboot?
Even if it is only to \Documents and Settings\<user> it would make the root directory clean.

The first thing Sprite Backup does is creating copies of the databases (.vol) with a .volc extension. If you cancel a backup, these are not deleted. Sprite confirmed that as being a mistake to me and promised, to post that under q&a. I didn't check since....

Regarding the PIM.volc, if it happens again I assume I can just delete it. I got rid of it by doing a hard reset and a restore so I have solved the probem for now.
I've had the PIM.volc file/error before and I just manually deleted it with no problems at all.

Any apps to force *.cab file install to storage card?

Any apps to force *.cab file install to storage card?
well you can try to edit the cabs you need with WinCE Cab Manager for hardcode the paths to point in the storage card but some applications are needed to be in or to have parts of them in Windows folder or to run from the device, so this will not work in all applications
so wince doesn't support installing apps in the storage card?
storage gonna be a problem, unlike in smartphone it asks where to install it.
is it possible to save contacts and email, sms, mms messages directly to the storage card? i remember smartphones have a reg hack for that.
thanks.
it asks depending on the cab, most of the cabs i create i adjusted them not to ask where to install if they can not be installed on the storage card. but other cabs ask if you want to install on the device or the storage card
I have this issue with a couple of games 'Hawx' and 'Xtrakt' no matter what I do even selecting the option to install on storage card they install in the Phone Program files.. They both use nerly 15MB of space which is a big chunk of the 200MB available.

in other words: you are in the wrong section
I have 50MB left of the phone storage so 15MB is a lot, I don't see why the game can't be installed on the memory card.
Is there any app that will list where all the space is being used up, I do agree 200MD is quite a bit, but I have cleared out all temp files I can think of..

I guess you did not get my comment... the BA does not have 200 MB of storage, no matter what you do. MemMaid or SKTools might be ale to give you the info that you are looking for.

How full is the phone memory? Details...
Did you download something? Downloaded files usually goes to the root of the main memory.
search moving cache on here, that takes up a big chunk of memory...

how , pls tell me
I've got the same problem with my son's phone it keeps on coming up with the message "your phone is running low on free storage space. delete old or unused items to create more space" when I look in file explorer/ windows/youtube its full of old files but will take for ever to delete them indavidualy does anyone know how to remove these old files as I can't access them when the phone is conected up to the pc, plus is it possible to change the cache so these files are saved to the memory card instead.
Please help as my son is driving me around the bend asking me to fix it !!!!!
Hard reset the phone to clear the storage.
Also check you don't have something like voice recorder activating in your pocket or something creating large files of nonsense filling the memory.
I've managed to delete all the old you tube files 525 of them but storage memory is still full
total 180.98mb
in use 177.89mb
free 3.09mb
so now I don't know whats using allthe memory
does any one have any idea whats wrong
cheers

youcan access them from your computer so long as you allow hidden and system files.(in win 7 open the phones windows folder, click alt, tools, folder options, then I think its the second tab, un tick hide protected files and the hidden files one, apply and they should appear.you MAY need to apply to all folders)
or, use resco explorer on your hd2, much than the built in one and will also allow you to choose to un hide system and hidden files.
as for multi select...in resco is a menu option for multi select.
Going to do a hard reset but can't keep on doing that every time it fills up it's only been 2 weeks since it was last reset.

i see all these posts saying you can dl stuff from internet and put onto the phone?

Hi, Sorry to bother everyone.....but i am new to this and i just got this htc hd2 phone and i been TRYING to read up on stuff but not really understanding much....*i know most of yall are prob laughing right now* but i was just wondering how do you dl apps from the comp and put it into your phone? do you just put it in the sd card under a certain folder? or do i dl it from my phone? Thanks for everyones time!
Hello friend, I understand what it's like coming into a tech heavy phone like the HD2 and then trying to comprehend stuff on this site. It get easier over time, just keep reading.
Anyway in answer to your question downloading apps is easy. For your computer you just have to find the apps you want, whether it be here or other sites. Select the app you want and download it. The majority of winmo apps are .cab files. If you download a .zip then extract the .cab from inside it.
Copy the .cab file to your sdcard or phone memory whichever you prefer, then using file explorer just navigate to the app, select it and install. Most apps ask if you want to install to phone memory or sdcard, whichever you prefer. All done!
For downloading on your phone it's the same concept, find the app, download it to your sdcard or internal memory and then use file explorer to install.
Good luck
thanks alot chris! I will defiantly try this out........one more quick question if you dont mind....is that when i put the .cab file onto my sd card or phone does it need to be in a certain folder?........thanks again!
just place it anywhere on your sd card mate and navigate to it using file explorer, i have a folder on my sd card called general crap, and anything i want to install goes in there so i no where i left it

My HD2 storage space is depleting. What do I do?

I removed some applications to regain some storage space but it is depleting constantly. I cannot figure it out why. I use SD card to keep Opera cache. How can I prevent the storage space from depleting? Thanks.
I had same problem. I realised that when iuse you tube hundreds of files download temporary in system/windows/you tube. So delete that folder completely. But you will loose your history. And see in the folder system/application data/htc/ htc album/cache. And delte all files except maptable and thumbcaches. These files are not needed. and it also weighs a lot.
Thanks a lot Urvansh. I deleted all the files in htc album/cache except maptable and thumbcaches as you suggested. The files I deleted had taken about 18MB.

low on internal storage memory?, read this:
It seems that opera9 keeps all cab files you downloaded in the folder:
windows/opera9/profile/download/
I bet you opera10 does the same.
I had about 79MB of application cab files there, using up internal storage memory, which I did not need, and had no idea were there.
I found them using 'treesize mobile', available on the marketplace for free.
Also, I checked the program files folder and found that applications which I had previously uninstalled still had folders in there with files in them.
Go check out Clear Temp which is a great little app that helps you keep most of those pesky temp folders cleaned out and not using memory resources.
