Launching Gmail Java App from HTC Home Launcher - Mogul, XV6800 General

I'm getting tired of windows email and i'm reading that there's a new version of the gmail client out.
I read a while back that it was was possible to launch the Gmail app from the HTC Home Launcher using a specific version of the java framework and changing some sort of index in the registry. Anyone remember how to do this?

[Q]/[REQ] GMail App similar to G1

Hey guys, I've seen some screenshots of the G1's gmail app and it looks really nice. On my old nonPPC phone, I used the java gmail app and it was nice to have all of the features within gmail there. Now, I like the autosyncing of my email through IMAP, but I still would prefer a dedicated Gmail app I think.
How hard would it be for someone to somehow port the GMail application from the G1 to our Diamond? I couldn't find much in a search and using a java environment along with the old gmail app doesn't fit the VGA screen at all.
Bump
I'd also be interested in seeing something like this.
me three.. I'd be happy to donate to a developers paypal for a slick gmail app!!
I like the java one gmail has for WM but its sort of a pain to run on WM to much navigation..

Original Android 2.1 Email Client

For those interested in original client available in "pure" Android 2.1 - here it is!
For me it's much more better than the HTC's one.
PS. God give us root to get rid of all that crappy HTC bloatware
What are the advantages of the original email app over HTC's version?
I like its look and feel, htc's one is too glossy. The same applies to music app.
Just try it yourself,it can be installed in parallel with htc one.

Is there anyway to get the app to delete the original emails off the server?
THANKS!!! it is awsome! Finnaly my emailsending works accross IMAP and TLS. With built in HTC email client it not works.
Np
As for deleting emails - don't know if you're talking about pop or imap. In imap you have to delete mail from trash to get rid of them.
Didn't tested this app with pop3, so don't know if tere is an option to "delete from server after download". But I think that there could be no such option to prevent user from mistakes.
But .... it's source is available via source.android.com... and it can be tuned, or feature can be requested.
Thanks, sorted my mail sending across SSL.
The stock HTC mail app is eating up the memory. After 3 days, I had 30 MB of mail data, and erasing all Accounts did not helped. The 30 MB was still there, so I had to make a Factory Reset. Thanks for this app!!
Thanks for this.
Does this app allow searching of emails, in particular Exchange?
I noticed, or haven't found, the search feature for the HTC Mail app :/
This works great on Legend, nice to see a bit of stock Eclair.

I would love to have this feature! I understand WinMob does this on exchange 2007...
I think I overlooked the obvious, pressing the search button!
Didn't give me results for my search, going to look into the number of emails the phone has access to, either copied to phone or on the server. I suspect the string I searched for was too far in the past.
[edit] Shame, only searches sender names and subject line :/
So, i installed this on my incredible and configured it to work with my office exchange account... set it up as push, and it never updated... went into the sync settings and it was in there, but was showing that it wasn't set to auto sync and i couldn't get it to sync from there.. originally when i first set it up, it was able to connect and download my past emails, but nothing after that.. I know i'm in the desire section of the site, so it may just be that ti's not gunna work on my Incredible right now, but i was wondering if root is required to use this?

don't know if i understood you correctly but i can search my exchange 2007 mail from my phone...
just open htc mail app and than press the hardware search button...type what you want to search and that's it...
thanks alot, this is so much better than sense's version, actually so much stock android 2.2 stuff is better than sense i'm thinking of rooting for 2.2
This force closes when I have an email with an attachment in my inbox, really annoying.
Does it require root?
Does this application require root access or can I install it even if the phone is unrooted? Another question -- Does this get me the combined inbox?

Switching Calendars

Anyone know If the G1 stock calendar would work on the Vibrant? Just had the random right of copying the .apk calendar file from the my G1 and installing it on my Vibrant. I know it will override the stock calendar I have now though. So before I do it I want to know if anyone knows if it'll work properly or not.

Seriously, the stock vibrant calendar is really bad. Worst: When you add an event, it defaults to the internal calendar that doesn't sync with Google, so if I check my calendar on my desktop, I don't see events I added with my Vibrant (unless I remember to change the calendar when creating the event).
I don't have an answer, but another quick workaround is a bookmark to the web-based touch interface for Google Calendar that supports HTML5 offline storage and background sync. I can't add links due to the spam blocker in the forum, so remove the spaces...
http : // www . google . com /calendar/gp?hl =en#~calendar:view=m
I also really like "Calendar Quick Add" for quickly adding calendar events.
I thought about doing that but I don't always update and do stuff with my calendar when I have service. I might give it a try in the next few days. I just need to make sure I can go back if need be.

Just download any one of the dozens of other free calendars available on the market and set it to use your Google calendar and forget the stock calendar even exists.

[Q] Non Sense Email Widget fed by mail from HTC Mail app

I am currently running a SenseHD Based ROM, however stripped of the Sense UI (baadnewz lite). This means that I have all of the key HTC system apps (mail, calendar, dialer, people, camera, etc), but none of that Sense UI and launcher (rosie, etc.) Instead I use launcher pro.
The down side is that I cannot use the very nice Sense provided widgets. If I did, I could use the Mail widget to show the email that is received from the Mail application, which is configured to read from an exchange account (push). But since I cannot use this widget, I have to rely on other widgets to show the email.
The problem is that no mail widget that I have found can be "fed" by the HTC Mail app. It doesn't seem to expose the email so that widgets (other than the Sense widgets) to display the email. In other words, every other widget doesn't allow me to select the email account that the Mail application is using.
Alternatives would be to use K9 Email + pure messaging widget, which works, but I loose the ability for push mail.
The funny thing is that the HTC calendar app --does-- expose the calendar events to other widgets. I am able to select my exchange account in the widget settings.
Am I hosed here? Does anyone know of a way I can use an email widget that is fed by the mail from the HTC Mail widget?
I thought that the email and calendar emails/events gets pushed to a central DB for others apps to cherry pick from? I guess this isn't true?
I don't want to automatically forward the email to another IMAP account (say gmail) of which another widget could pick that up...
ideas?
I'm subscribing to this thread... would like to know this as well...
would like go know too, im searching for a real nice Mail widget Hut coudnt find anythingn.
now i forward ms Mails go ms googlemail anderen Push it from there go gmail...
I stubled on the blog of the creater of the EmailWidget.
His widget can gain access to the mail from the HTC Mail widget by forcing the install of the widget to the /system area.
See http://blog.invalidobject.com/android-app-email-widget/comment-page-1
I asked him if this nice side effect would occur for all apps (i.e.: other widgets) to gain access to the mail provided by the HTC Mail.....
If this is possible.. then we are looking good!
On some HTC devices like HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy with Android 2.1 you even don't need to install my app as system app.
I don't know of any other app that is capable of showing mails from htc mail app. That was the main reason i built my app. But it is certainly possible to implement other widgets that could gain access like my app does.
Regards,
Frank
Perhaps this thread can be moved over to the Desire Android Development forum - someone may know how to expose, and or disclose, the mail from the HTC Mail app, with or without root. There has been some hesitation in incorporating a potential integration in some mail widgets (ahem, Pure Messenger) because it requires root and is kinda "hacky" in nature.
The app either has a provider or not. I am not exactly sure why the widget being co-located with the HTC Mail app on /system is required.
The lack of a capable email widget is making me re-think my decision to go senseless!
Try Executive Assistant. Don't recall but I'm not running Sense to test.

Nah, you need K9 for that to read the exchange mails...
i want a tool where i dont need to install any other exchange tool ... Something like EMail Widget was perfect , but you need to have root on a desire Z stock 2.2 rom....
too bad though...

Trying to install Email app instead of Gmail

I want to install the Android Email app (4.4) instead of Gmail on my Nougat Moto G5+, but the install doesn't allow me and tells me to use Gmail instead - even though I already disabled Gmail. Does anyone know of a workaround please?
Because that app isn't supported in newer OS versions and has been depreciated by Google. Use Nine, Bluemail, K-9, or some other email application.
I've tried all those and am using Bluemail now. Don't like it much but it's the only one I've found that supports Outlook push AND pop3. K9 is way too complicated. Email "just worked" like Apple of old!
