not possible to assign hardware buttons?... And more...

1. Looking at buttons in Settings, the list is simply empty, no buttons to assign. Am I doing something wrong?
2. Also, I can't find an option to make the X button actually close an app, instead of minimizing it. Again, am I doing something wrong?
3. I noticed that on first startup Windows doesn't ask you to align the screen. Yet the option is there. But how do you accurately align the screen with fingers? I find the screen very unresponsive in the top left and right corner. Also, while typing I have to aim somewhat above the key I mean to hit. Is this a question of getting used to, or has it to do with bad alignment?
4. Where's the autorotation? Is there a way to tell the device which apps to autorotate and which not? For now, hardly anything rotates of its own accord. And since I can't assign rotation to a button it might as well go without a G-sensor.

With point 3, you'll get some debate about this with various people. I think there should be an alignment as everyone presses the screen at different angles and its not going to know that unless you align it.
HTC Hero had same problem, screen edges were unresponsive, until you did a calibrate of the keyboard and then it was perfect.
It is an option missing...!

ad 1: if you make shortcut of any program you want to run, rename it to long_send.lnk and copy to C:\windows, then long press left button and this program will be executed. (I downloaded from XDA rotate.exe to rotate screen)
ad 2: install Duttys HTC task manager, restart and X is back (also in settings yo can configure its function)
ad 4: there is a possibility to "unlock" rotation in registry, but as long as you can not see any buttons in buttons setting it's pointless... that's why I used point 1 solution

It's still there (sorry in Dutch)
Start > Instellingen > Menu > Meer > Systeem > Scherm
In English it should be something like
Start > Settings > Menu (at the bottom of the screen) > More > System > Screen

Still, that gives me just one long press button to assign. There are at least three buttons that could be used for different apps. I just don't understand what HTC were thinking. Why have 5 buttons on a device and disabling the assign option?

I know it's still there, but I wonder how you can properly align a screen with finger presses as opposed to the pinpoint accuracy of a stylus.
Before this I had the Omnia 2 with the same lack of autorotation options (actually, I'd hoped that returning to HTC would have solved that, but no...). Some clever developer had whipped up a very nice program called RotationDetection, with which you could decide which apps should autorotate. Something like that should be made for the HD2!

I tried this, and for some reason I can't get it to work. Here's what I did:
Downloaded rotate.exe to my storage card.
Created a shortcut to rotate.exe, also on the storage card, and renamed it long_send.lnk
Copied this shortcut and pasted it in the Windows directory on the phone.
Now, if I select long_send.lnk in the Windows directory, the screen does indeed rotate. But I can't get the screen to rotate by holding the send key down.
I have already soft-reset, and this does not solve the problem.
Any ideas?

Did you use THIS Rotate Screen with the shortcut link?

You will need to install Rotate Screen.cab (or Rotate Screen CW.cab) 1st
The Rotate Screen CW.cab is for counterclockwise rotation.
For me it's working great. When I hold the "call" button for some time the screen rotates.

did anyone install AEbuttons on the HD2
it works wonderfully on X1, HD1, diamond 2. it can assign 4 programs or functions to each button and that includes the volume buttons

Okay, so I used that rotate screen cab, installed it, found the shortcut it created in windows/start menu/programs and copied it. Then, I pasted a shortcut to it in the windows directory, and renamed that shortcut long_send.lnk. Then restarted.
Still doesn't work. When i run the shortcut directly in the windows directory, the screen rotates. When I run the 'Rotate' shortcut from the Start menu, the screen rotates. When I long press the send button, the screen does not rotate. Am I missing a step?

Not sure what you call the "send" button.
It's the most left button on the bottom that you need to press for about 3 to 4 seconds.

One more thing..
The "long_send.lnk" should be in the Windows directory.

Yes, the button on the bottom left - the one that if you press and release takes you to the phone screen. At any rate, I can't get it to work the way that has been described. Any suggestions?

Yes, as i mentioned, I put the 'long_send.lnk' shortcut in the Windows directory. Have tried and retried this about a dozen times now. Still no joy.

Not sure about rotate.exe, but FWIW, Gyrator 2 works fine and is customizable based on apps.

Okay, I FINALLY figured it out, and I'll post what happened just in case anyone else runs into the same issue.
I followed the instructions as posted and changed the name of the shortcut to Long_Send.lnk and put it in the Windows directory. However, apparently when you use the Rename function, it just allows you to rename the file and not the extension. It doesn't indicate this anywhere, so I thought I was renaming both the file name and the extension. So, when I renamed to Long_Send.lnk, what I must have in reality been doing was renaming it to Long_Send.lnk.lnk - and therefore it didn't work.
Once it dawned on me that this might be the case, I renamed the shortcut again, this time without adding the extension at the end (Long_Send), and voila - it worked.
Never had to rename a file in WinMo before, so I was unaware that the Rename function only renames the file name, and not the file extension.

FYI, you can remap most (if not all) hardware buttons with the .lnk hack. Here's more information on how to do it.
Unlike programs like AEButton Plus, it will only allow you to assign short and long keypresses (no double- and triple-presses), but won't consume any system resources, won't be draining your battery, won't conflict with any other software that uses keyboard hooks.
Use it with caution though.

I could have sworn I saw one specifically for HTC phones to remap the volume. It was something like vol up = dpad up, hold up for dpad left...etc.
I never use the volume controls on my current phone (Advantage 7501), and I'm expecting to be able to use vol up/down as dpad up/down for scrolling list and most importantly next page in reading a book!

Just thought I'd share this one I found.
If you hold down the "home" button for about a second you get an easy task switcher to any app that was running in the background. It's faster than hitting back till you get to the menu or getting to the menu and then finding the app you are after .
Sliding your finger across the notification window just as it drops down changes the brightness of the screen.
Any others that people have found?

You can add shortcuts to phone numbers and messages on the home screen by holding your finger down and selecting shortcuts on the home screen somewhere. This also appears to work with a lot of apps, like kindle shortcuts to a specific book.

All android phones do this, Holding the Home button is a standard android way to "Switch fast" between apps

A few things I found out reading the SGS forum here:
1. You can control the brightness by sliding your finger left to right when pulling down the notification bar. Just keep your finger on the edge of the pull down window.
2. You can have the SGS announce the title/artist of a song from the Music player by pressing and holding the Up Volume button while a song is playing.
3. You can "lock screen" while watching video by pressing Power Button while a video is playing. This is great at preventing unintended clicks while holding the phone watching a video.

I know the third one, but didn't know the first two. Thank you tenshi, for sharing.
However, I don't quite understand how exactly you can change the brightness in the day you described, cos I can't seem to do it.
Also, I got the feeling that to effect number 2, there is a monthly subscription that I need to pay to Optus. They gave me a 7 day free trial before continuing, and I did not continue.

eaglesteve, for #1, make sure auto-brightness is off in your display settings, now when you slide the notification bar panel down try sliding your finger left to right and you'll notice the display brightness change.
for #2, I don't think its connected to your provider as it doesn't even need a data connection to work, it's just using text to speech. You might have to enable or download it the first time.

My auto-brightness is already off, but I still can't seem to change the brightness when sliding from left to right or right to left while pulling down the notification curtain. Any other clue?
For 2, you're right, once I downloaded the voice synthesising software from the market place, it works. I need to make sure the music player is in the foreground for this to work, right?

Technically it's a "most recently used" list rather than a list of apps running in the background. For example if you have just exited a navigation app, or killed an app from a process manager, it will still appear in this list.

Interesting thread.
I just want to add some "shortcuts" I discovered myself using the Galaxy (maybe they aren't so hidden. I am a lousy user, don't like to read manuals. So maybe they are very obvious )
Close pull down window/curtain, close desktop layer folders and close keyboard by tapping back key
Access to the bookmark button and address bar in the brower by tapping the menu button (no need to scroll all the way up)
Open soft D-Pad by tap-and-hold the "?123" key on the standard Samsung Keyboard
Quick and reliable GPS reception by editing the ntp server in the gps.conf file

Someone I only just learnt...
Pressing and holding the power button performs a reset. (Keep pressing it after you get the shut down/mute/airplane options and the phone will suddenly restart. Have to keep the button pressed for 5 secs atleast).

cool, this is handy when you're driving
i usually double tap the contact, but if your car goes over a bump or pot hole, then the 2nd tap is missed, and wont work.

1. Browsing in the Gallery
When browsing your large list of photo's in the 'Gallery', click the icon on the right to group them into date taken ~ makes browsing much more manageable.
2. Locking the Camera
If you wish to leave the camera on but worried you may accidentally touch the scrren/controls you can lock the camera.
Once you have the camera set up how you want it, simply briefly press the Power button. You will then see a white padlock appear on screen. Now you can hold the camera and phone how you like until you are ready to shoot.... When ready again briefly press the Power button, the padlock disappears and you can take your shoot/video.

Nah, it's samsung's replacement for the search button that's a Google requirement. They don't have a button for it, so they assigned long-press menu for search, whereas on the Nexus One, it'll make force the soft-'board to come up.

At first it didn't worked for me also, because I understand bad.
Not pulling down. Go to the upper of the screen, press till the botton of the dropdown curtain appears, but don't slide it down. Once that appears the BAR move left or right your finger, and it will adjust.

Ah yes, I got it to work too. The trick is not to pull it down but just to make the curtain barely appear before you slide.

[Q] Help, i've lost the menu button??

I am running a nand version on my HD2, of android. But the problem is, in the bar below (wich you always could see in your home screen) i had three apps. phone/menu/messages. Something happend and I've lost the menu 'app'. The problem is that I can't find the menu 'app' in my app list. I think that is because it isn't a real app. phone and messages i can find. But the menu thing I can't find. Now I see a star in the bar and I can't find the menu thing as an app. Does anybody know how I can get the menu shortcup back!!!???? PLZ??

Keep holding on that star in ur menu bar and press on smtg called "app drawer" .
Or press your physical menu button ( the windows key ) / then preferences / scroll down and try to reset to defaults .

Well, I've tried your first thing. It doesn't matter hoe long I keep holding the star, eventualy it says: no application defined yet, drop something here! .
Your second way doesn't work, because: I go to preferences and then ADWLauncher. In ADWlauncher I reset to default, but then it doesn't reset the shortcut bar, it only resets your home screen preferences. Like I have normaly 5 rows, then it goes back to 4 rows. But it doesn't reset the shortcut bar?? Is there some other way???

Yes there is , follow those steps :
Press on a empty place in your desktop / press Launcher Actions / press Open/close App drawer/ then place this shortcut on the star . Here you go

Scroll to the right of your screen and open the settings wheel, from there is a system volume slider.
The following isn't a question but a possible answer for a future question:
To run a program as administrator you must search for the program via metro and then right click it and the option will be there.

ah but that changes the overall system volume, so yes it does work, but it effects everything, its also a backwards way of doing it, (action>click>click>adjust) Seems a tad long winded for a simple up down volume command,

I think what dazza wants to have is a volume seperatly for the music app and at the moment this is not built in. You have to use the system volume (like Nasdaq said or just in case you have volume +/- on your keyboard with these).
I'm not quiet sure if in any metro app out there today you can change the volume (except some that are playing i.e. youtube videos, cause the youtube player can do that).

No problem. Its the only way I know about adjusting the volume at the moment.

If it's on your desktop or if your feeling complicated, you can always right click the program's executable and press Run As Administrator. Or if your scrolling through the Start Menu entries using the tip below, you can right click and the option will be there too
For future references: (I'll be updating this post with more.)
All your legacy start menu entries can be found by right clicking in a non-tiled area and pressing All Apps.
As per previous versions of Windows, all your start menu groups and shortcuts can be found on the previously mentioned All Apps page. (Your start menu is still there, you don't need to pin any of the internally used Start Menu folders to your taskbar or such.)

BTW, This thread should be stickied once we get enough information. I think it's a good idea. Also I think Metro Apps are exempt from the mixer. So I'm not sure that there is a way to change the volume in any of them unless the App gives it's own soft-volume control.

If it's on your desktop or if your feeling complicated, you can always right click the program's executable and press Run As Administrator. Or if your scrolling through the Start Menu entries using the tip below, you can right click and the option will be there too
For future references: (I'll be updating this post with more.)
All your legacy start menu entries can be found by right clicking in a non-tiled area and pressing All Apps.
As per previous versions of Windows, all your start menu groups and shortcuts can be found on the previously mentioned All Apps page. (Your start menu is still there, you don't need to pin any of the internally used Start Menu folders to your taskbar or such.)
Shutdown is found by pressing either WIN+I or by holding your mouse in the upper-right hand corner of the screen, then pressing settings on the Charm Bar. Click power and choose what you want.
You can open the run window by pressing WIN+R or by holding your mouse in the lower-left corner of the screen and right clicking, then click Run.
You can also open Control Panel by right clicking the Start Hot-Corner overlay and clicking Control Panel. (This is the Desktop version of Control Panel, not the PC Settings app accessible in the Settings Menu on the Charms bar.)
EDIT: If you want, I can make a screenshot that shows what I mean for others.
BTW, This thread should be stickied once we get enough information. I think it's a good idea. Also I think Metro Apps are exempt from the mixer. So I'm not sure that there is a way to change the volume in any of them unless the App gives it's own soft-volume control.

Also in all Metro apps:
Right click in dead space (empty) and a menu will post at the bottom of the app with options/buttons. Right click again to dismiss if not needed.
Moving mouse to upper right in all metro apps just as on START will bring up the settings and preferences for each. This will contain some common preference options too.
Moving the mouse to the left side will bring up the task bar to close apps and for switching.
All WIN-(key) shortcuts still work as before, as some listed above.
Same with command line as well. (admins and power users =])

Does anyone know how to show up the Media Apps controls in desktop mode without pressing the media keys? When the media app plays music (and consumes around of 300MB RAM btw.) and you are in the desktop view you can press the volume keys on your keyboard to bring up a mini player that shows the current track and allows to play/skip/rewind/etc.. Is there a mouse way (or keyboard shortcut) to bring this up without the media keys?

but that doesn't allow you to pin "apps" specifically metro apps, it just lets you pin desktop programs.

So far I know it's not possible to pin metro apps to the desktop taskbar.

Would be interesting to know if there's a way, but I haven't found one (and doubt there's one ^^ )

Sorry, didn't know you were asking about "specific" metro apps.
So far, this isn't supported. YET. Remember this is still beta. The problem will probably be fixed in the future.

Anyone know if pressing the Metro App Bar "Uninstall" button uninstalls non-metro programs if you press it on one?
Also if your in a metro app while Music is doing it's thing and you open the app bar, there's music controls there too.

Uninstall button on a non-metro program seems to bring up add remove programs

[Q] S4 Keyboard Problem

I was sending a text message and when I tried to long press the 'm' key to type a question mark I realized all of my long press punctuation options are gone. Puzzled, I looked in the keyboard's settings for a solution but couldn't find anything. I find it much less convenient to have to press the Sym button every time I want to insert punctuation. Has anyone else experienced this?

1. Go to Apps - Settings - More - Application manager - All (last tab) and look for "Samsung Keyboard"/"Keyboard Samsung"
2. Click it, click button delete cache and delete data
3. Reboot ur phone
4. Tell us how works now

1- Make a backup of ur Internal Memory
2- Do a factory reset:
- From your home screen press the apps icon in the lower right corner.
- Find and press the settings icon.
- In the upper end of the screen press the accounts tab.
- In the bottom of the next screen press the Backup and reset button.
- Press the factory data reset.
- Read the info on your cell phone screen and hit Reset device.

Ok I did a factory reset but my keyboard still isn't fixed. Now I'm starting to wonder if it even had that feature in the first place. It did, didn't it?

Is grabing the key .
*EDIT: When i press "m" or other letter i haven't nothing sorry

That is so weird. I swear I could long press a letter and it would come up with a symbol. Oh well thanks for your help

For anyone interested, I did find an app that adds this feature onto your stock keyboard called Samsung Keyboard Alt Symbols, and it can be downloaded through the Xposed Installer.
