Office Software Options - Shift General

I have had a very good experience replacing MS office w/ gnumeric and abiword. They are much faster then openoffice or MS office. So far I haven't had any compatibility problems. I was wondering if anyone else has any similar alternatives that they would suggest?

only problem is open files, before saved whit openoffice or msoffice, another problem is plugins etc etc because abiword e gnumeric is very small applications.

I may have missed something, but abiword and gnumeric both save and open files in MSOffice and O formats. I'm not sure which plug-ins don't work, but at least abiword has plugins.

Office 2003 is super fast on the Shift (under XP)

A good (but paid) alternative is SoftMaker Office. It can be used both under Windows XP/Vista and Windows Mobile.

SSH,IRC,IM cleints & Linux & connectivity/syncing to

Hi Guys,
Some simple Questions that I cant seem to find much of a conclusive answer to for most.
Looking at purchasing the Orange version of the Himalaya/XDAii (SPV M1000) VERY shortly, but wondered if you guys (whom seem to know everything about these toys) could answer me some quick questions:
All software ideally would be opensource & and under FreeBSD or GPL2.
1. SSH Client - are there any available that support passphrases etc (recomendations)?
2. IRC Client - is there any (recomendations)?
3. IM Clients (other than M$'s) (recomendations) - looking for minimal functionality?
4. Does PPC2003 have a task switcher, or do you have to close, and reopen things?
5. Iv'e seen some posts here that talk about Linux connectivity, how good is it, and what exactly can be synced, and to what?
6. Can any of the syncing of contacts/mail etc be done to NON M$ apps on the PC with/without 3rdparty apps? Ideally anyone know of any apps to sync with Mozilla (under XP).
7. I assume email is regular pop/smtp/imap so one can whack in custom servers/details etc (ala non hotSPAMrelay.com stuff)? Or is there an alternative to M$LookOut thats known to work with mutiple accounts on the XDAii?
8. What level of Java is supported on these little things? e.g. will they run MindTerm SSH clients?
9. Anyone run this with sync/connection to WinXP running in a VM under Linux?
10. Is there a cygwin availble for the PPC2003 OS, and is it anygood? (Iv'e heard rumours of a M$ written version)
11. Can the Himalayer be used as a webcam via Bluetooth/GPRS? Im thinking 'not of me' webcam, being the camera is on the back
I was very badly dissapointed by the obscure and totally lacking information on M$ site - though it's probably there, just impossible to find like most other things.
Many Thanks Guys!
Re: SSH,IRC,IM cleints & Linux & connectivity/syncin
1. SSH Client
Avaible some clients. I think there are a PuTTY port too. I think without a keyboard, console window is unuseable.
2. IRC Client - is there any
I never use, search google.
3. IM Clients (other than M$'s) (recomendations) - looking for minimal functionality?
There is MSN built in, and does not working, because it need to upgrade There are an official ICQ program ww.icq.com.
This is nice:
http://www.movsoftware.com/products/imov/imov.htm
(AOL, ICQ, MSN)
4. Does PPC2003 have a task switcher, or do you have to close, and reopen things?
There is a very basic taskmanager-like memory manager utility built in. There is some utility program, they make a taskbar like desktop computers, and there is some real taskmanager and process wiever program. Search PHM taskmanager on the net.
To test, how the PocketPC working, download the free MS development SDK. It contains an emulator.
5. Iv'e seen some posts here that talk about Linux connectivity, how good is it, and what exactly can be synced, and to what?
I tested linux on ipaq 3630. Its good, but syncing with linux or windows is not working at this time. (only contacts as I remember)
http://www.handhelds.org
There is screenshots too, but it not work on XDA I think.
6. Can any of the syncing of contacts/mail etc be done to NON M$ apps on the PC with/without 3rdparty apps? Ideally anyone know of any apps to sync with Mozilla (under XP).
As I heard, you can synchronize with BAT.
7. I assume email is regular pop/smtp/imap so one can whack in custom servers/details etc (ala non hotSPAMrelay.com stuff)? Or is there an alternative to M$LookOut thats known to work with mutiple accounts on the XDAii?
I don't understand the question well because of my wrong english.
You can setup different accounts, and there is many 3th party e-mail clients. A free and good one: nPOP
8. What level of Java is supported on these little things? e.g. will they run MindTerm SSH clients?
There is several (mor than 10) different JAVA stuff for pocket pc. Search it on this forum! I have never tried java.
9. Anyone run this with sync/connection to WinXP running in a VM under Linux?
I don't know. The XP under the VM can see USB?
10. Is there a cygwin availble for the PPC2003 OS, and is it anygood? (Iv'e heard rumours of a M$ written version)
Good idea What do you want with your pocket pc? )
11. Can the Himalayer be used as a webcam via Bluetooth/GPRS? Im thinking 'not of me' webcam, being the camera is on the back
dont know
If you have more questions, write it. I will answer what I can.

Does anyone know an alternative to Terminal Services Client?

Hey there, now that I've got my shiney new XDA Exec, with its VGA Screen and inbuilt Wi-fi I want to have a play with the Terminal Services Client to control my PC...I'm pretty sure that's what it can be used for right?
Well anyway from what I've read TSC can connect to (among other things) Win XP Pro computers with remote desktop enabled...however my computer only has XP Home so I can't do this, so can anyone recommend an alternative (possibly better?) program that I can use to control my XP Home PC using my XDA Exec....
cheers!
VNC (free)
GoToMyPC (not free)
There is more information in the "terminal services full screen" thread in this forum.
I have been using GoToMyPC for a long time. It's a subscription-based service. But I am happy with it. Very stable and functional. And full-screen.
prob with those apps is, terminal services connects to all modern windows operating systems and no extra software is needed, im not running round the country installing vnc onto everything, if its already got RDC/Terminal Services intergrated. On my work network i have access to 36k+ machines, yer 36,000 machines. all 2000,XP,2003, the other 30k machines are still NT or 98, upgrades aint a overnight thing!!!
so you see, not an option im afraid
*edit* what really grinds me is that i would have thought it was obvious to M$ that fullscreen should be an option, but as with the diabolical MSNM, the most obvious upgrades never appear, surlly in that groups aint a hard thing to do. and turn the bloody beeping off when ppl sign in.
Obvious things strategicly lost??
use www.logmein.com man its freakin great and you can use for free
if you put your device in landscape it is a clean view too
z2remote2pc works a little better than logmein, I think. A little more control of the desktop with z2. LogMeIn is nice though.
but do these apps use the RDC protocol ? i cannot amend 30k+ machines just to do remote desktop, it has to be compatible else its pretty useless to me soz
Carnivor, I presume your request is satisfied?
Why on earth 30,000 machines? Heyzus!
What PDA are you using?
V
30k machines is roughly the number of client machines the company i work for has. i have access to them all via TS, not that i need them all, i mainly access a handful of desktops that are mine, and the clients servers.
its quite handy to be able to wifi my desktop in the room next door when im standing at a rack in the server room as there is nothing but racks in there and an additional desktop in there would get easilly spotted.
im on a Jasjar btw, happy to test your app wink wink**
and i have VS 2005, is it poss for a 2003 project to be loaded into VS 2005 and compiled??? if you aint got it yet its a possibility
ps, ohh yes, im satisified, its what should have been done on theyre attempt ( M$ )
Carnivor - I have Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2. I'm waiting on RC1 because the tools I use in Beta 2 don't work properly on the WM5 emulator. As soon as I get a new version of VS2005, I'll sort through the WM5 issues and bang out a preliminary version for you guys to try.
The current version should still work nicely even on Wm5, but only in Portrait QVGA. However, a full landscape VGA version should follow soonish.
If you've got a spare VGA PDA, send it my way! I'm desperate
V
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
Version 8.0.50727.42 (RTM.050727-4200)
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 2.0.50727
thats the version i have

PDF notes

Hello,
I'm looking for application similar to PDF Annotator. (It allows us to make notes on pdf files with stick or with keyboard..)
http://www.ograhl.com/en/pdfannotator/
but it must working on XP/Vista and on my wizard (windows mobile 5) as well - as long as I know PDF Annotator works only on Windows XP, 2000 and vista..
What would you recommend?
I found "jarnal" but I can't run it in wizard (I don't even know if it should work on Windows Mobile, but nvm.. maybe someone knows any working application for making notes in PDF.
anyone knows program like described above?

Powerpoint mobile

Hi,
I searched the forum for an answer but couldnt find it, so Im sorry if this is a double post.
Right, Im pretty dissapointed with powerpoint mobile as it is not able to edit or create powerpoints. Even my old N95 could do that, so I defenatly expected the xperia as its a windows phone to be able to do that. So is there any other 3rd party program that is able to edit powerpoints?
Cheers
Yes. Look at www.softmaker.com. They make an office suite that runs on WM devices (as well as Linux and Windows) that imports and exports Microsoft Office files, including Powerpoint, very well. I've only played around briefly with their Powerpoint replacement (and only on Windows, not WM), but I've used their word processor on my PDAs and phones for years and been very satisfied. Highly recommended.
wow looks great. Will try it and report how well it works on the xperia.
Cheers
Works great. Thx
you would think that the standard office mobile would have features like this. looks like a nice program though.

Office Bug!

Pity, today I found an Office bug.
So normally "au" button for native letters works fine, however why the hell two of my native letters are missing while the rest of them is there...
Anyway, I have few docs with Tablets inside - and sh**t, this "au" button stops working inside of some of the tablets parts!!
I have to get SoftMaker I think... Did you use it? Looks like a really profi app.
Softmaker office is a very good office suite, it will do anything a desktop office suite would.
The only problem with the app is that it is slower than office mobile to load a document of the same size and it often crashes, this is because it does not strip the document of any function, format, etc, therefore requires alot more ram/cpu usage
