Why some CAB installs are "unsuccessful" - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

This post is meant to introduce the issue of why some CAB files are unsuccessful, what causes it, and what can be done about it.
This is just some initial info I am putting forth and I encourage others who cook and make CAB files to provide their input to more fully flesh out this problem.
Have you ever attempted an install of a CAB on your device and near the very end...after the progress bar has moved most of the way, it finishes and says installation was "unsuccessful"? If so, read on...
There is probably more than one reason why a CAB won't install on a device. For instance, the CAB may be for the wrong device type (as CABs can specify what device types they will or will not install on). Also, there are security issues that many of you are aware of regarding unsigned CABS. However, in most cases, as long as the CAB is for your device-type and you either have security turned off, or accept the prompt to install then the CAB will properly install.
However, if you have ever had the issue with a CAB stating installation is "unsuccessful" after the process, it seems the issue has to do with DLL files that are registered as "shared" or "self-registering"
Below is a picture of a CAB opened with a CAB editing program. You can see that one of the DLL files (type "application extension") is set to "Yes" for "shared" and "self-registering".

I noticed that this CAB would install without a problem on my stock AT&T Tilt ROM, but had problems when trying to install to my cooked version. However, if I turned these flags on the file to "No" and then saved the CAB, the new CAB file would install properly.
I have experienced this on several CABs, on ROMs of all types.
In my experimentation it appears that if the DLL file in the CAB is set to shared/self-registering that it will not install if that file doesn't already exist on your system and is not registered properly (e.g. proper entires in the registry).
In this particular example (this was a CAB for a dialer) the DLL in question existed in the stock ROM, but not in my cooked ROM (since I pulled out the dialer).
Quick Overview of Test:
When I installed on my cooked ROM (with multiple changes) - no good.
When I installed on the stock ROM - good.
When I installed on the stock ROM (recooked with no changes) - good.
When I installed on the stock ROM (recooked with JUST that file removed) - no good.
In all cases, if I turned the option for shared/self-registering to "No" the CAB would install without a problem.
I believe that the existence of just the single file is not always all that is needed. I think that in some cases if related registry entries of other DLLs which call upon the file are not present then the results may be the same (i.e. unsuccessful if set to shared/self-registering).
When crafting my own CABs, sometimes these flags unintentionally get set to "Yes" and I get the same failed result. Without fail, if I edit the CAB and set these options to "No" the CAB installs fine and the application functions fine.
I don't really know why you would set a DLL to shared/self-registering as my knowledge doesn't really run that far and in my experience CABs with that setting generally fail. So a developer with further skill may wish to elaborate.
I hope that someone else finds this info useful and please feel free to add any accurate information.

Amazing
You are amazing. I have been trying to install the new opal phone canvas for almost a week and nothing worked until this.
Thank you

Actually, it is that CAB that inspired me to write this (although I have prior experience with the issue). There are other problems with the opal CAB that's available, so it still might not work. If you would post in the Opal CAB thread with your results (and your ROM) that would be appreciated.
EDIT: Assuming you are a Kaiser user, if not ignore as I mean Opal CAB for kaiser...thx.

Im actually a vogue user but I got the file from the kaiser thread. You're right though, it installed but it's the default dialer half skinned like other issues. It did fix the unsuccessful issue for me though.

has anyone ever told you that your a F*ckin genius.

You are an asset to XDA. Great post.

Which cab editor do you suggest? Is there a nice free one? I'm sure the topic has been covered, but for some reason not even a decent Google search helps me out on this, much less a site search.

You don't want to let us in on your secret on what .cab editor you are using?
I guess a simple answer was to much to ask for.

First off, your position as Moderator doesn't entitle you to be a smart a$$. In fact, you should set a better example than the average poster than snide comments such as this.
The poster didn't ask what program I am using. He asked for a "nice free one".
I happen to use OCP, which is NOT free. It is however listed in the forum link I included.

It has been stated by numerous Mods, that if you have a personal issue with them or the way they posted you need to PM them, or another Mod and not air your complaints in public. It has been suggested that failure to do this could result in a temporary ban. I would suggest editing your post to something more appropriate and air your grievances in the appropriate forum.

[curiosity] Bluetooth Manager (not sure if it works!)

Guys, someone was asking for a Bluetooth Manager for the Magician. I have no idea if this works, but it seems to load ok. It's from the eten rom.
It might do nothing at all, but it looks cute

Tried installing this on the Uni and just won't go on. keeps saying unsuccessful both to storage and device before and after a soft reset

The same thing here. Not able to install it...
Works ok on my Magician and Universal. Have you done the certificate unlocker patch?
I've reposted it as a zip as well, above. Just decompress and launch (twice).

Vijay now it is working on my Universal. But there is a small problem. It doesn't show good in VGA resolution. The icons and text seem really distorted... Would it be possible to make a VGA version?
Thank you in advance for all your contribution...
Mythozz: it would be possible to make a VGA version - it's all resource hackable. But I'm only posting it as a curiosity. Unless there's overwhelming demand that indicates it's useful, I'll leave it to someone else to resource hack... (and please post your results back here).
Have you found it good for anything? I don't think it particularly adds any functionality, just puts it all neatly together in one place. But I don't really use Bluetooth, so can't say if it adds anything.
V
Works nice on my SPV M3000 (NL).
Nice looking tool, to bad you have to scroll on some pages
vijay It is working just fine with my Uni, no problems at all. It's really nice that I can do anything I normally do with Bluetooth, but in a more sophisticated way... I use it all the time, I have a BT headset, a BT carkit, I ActiveSync with my PC via BT, exchange files as well so I have to admit that I am a fanatic user of such programs.
I understand that it is trouble for you to create a VGA version, so I will wait and see if you or someone else comes up with such a version. If not, no worries, in any case I thank you for a usefull program
Good to know it works! If I get a bit of time, I'll resource hack it, but anyone with VS2005 can open it up and do it for us - I'm desperately trying to finish a UI for VJToggleToday II so am very tied up
V
ps anyone tried the ftp setting. Looks quite curious!

Idem for me with my 9000
So i opened the file with WinCe cab manager and extracted the two dll files and the Bluetooth Manager.exe
I click on it twice but nothing appears
What's wrong ?
Thank you in advance Vijay
Diggia: I'm not really sure. Perhaps start with the zipped version, decompress and copy folder to Phone. Again, launch twice.
I'm sure you have already, but make sure you have de-certified your phone first.
Otherwise, I'm not sure. As I said, this is stolen from the Eten, but it works on both of my phones:?: If the zipped version doesn't work, I'll try looking into it further.

Just for curiosity, what can i do to see if my device is de-certified ?
Diggia: just the usual, try running any of my cabs and see if they install. Ie your system is set up to run uncertified software... I can't remember what system you're using, but the regedit is probably in the wiki if you need it, and there are a few cabs in the hacks section to do this. But I'm sure we're all running a decertified system now anyway!
V
I install your cabs without any problems (I have just installed VJDeviceLock, very useful !!!)
About the system, i have Qtek 9000 (WM5 obviously) with the last Qtek italian Rom taken from the FTP
I have installed the EnableRapi.cab also
The VJBlueToothManager must be run from memory ?
Because I try to launch your application from SD
Should run from anywhere. Very strange why it doesn't work? Can't think why...

YEAH, it works !!!!!!
I resolved uninstalling the Tanworks BT Stack (do you remember ?) and now it works, wonderful work Vijay !!!
Thanks a lot
PS: What's VJToggleToday II ?
Diggia - wow, didn't think of that
VJToggleToday II is an app to maximise the screen space of the Today screen, by shrinking the start bar and softkeys to an option size.
eg (not my screenshot)
I'm currently working on transforming it into something much better, hopefully But the current alpha works quite well.
V
WOW !!!!
Excellent work, i must try it ! 8)
ViJay,
I think this is the only bt app that can do ftp!! It's great (I use it only for this ability)
It would be great if this can be modified, so that pairing can be done (it currently does add something in the registry, unusable but is something )
I'll literally fall in love (of the manager of course XD)
Speaking on your start-softkey bars hack, it looks really nice: but what software can I add to add another customizable start bar with the same features? and how can I show the icons in the lower bar? Keep the good job!!
Cheers, MocciJ

I would like to thank corleno for his Vista Pocket 2 which gave me the inspiration/ideas that made me create this skin. I am not competing in anyway against corleno/anyones skin.
I also have made a Resco Explorer 2007 Today skin (as seen in the screenshot).
For the SD/CF images I would like to thank ~nukeypearce of deviantART
For the battery images I would like to thank Stephane Turpin (sturp) of Adium Xtras

Avast report the file also as a virus
I can download it without problems from my own server.
I'm running AVIRA virusscanner. Does the message come up when you try to download it or when you scan the archive?
wacky.banana, what virusscanner are you using?
[EDIT] I uploaded the file to an online virus checker, and this is the result.
AVAST is the only scanner that reports this virus.
When I check google for this virus, I can't almost find any result. This post is the first hit.
I think it's a false positive.
Johanromijin,
I'm using Avast and the warning is coming up as the file is being downloaded. I guess Avast is scanning in real time. As soon as the file gets to circa 90% download Avast puts up a warning and kills the download.
Frustrating if its an error, worrying if its not.

Update - Just seen the update to your post above. I guess its a false positive then or is Avast better than all the rest at picking this up?

To those of you who dont know what dynamo is... its an animated task switcher that allows you to pull up a picture of all open tasks and switch to that picture with your finger or close that task. Kinda like with Vista on windows desktop, except its VERY finger friendly. I have mine set to a button and to a finger gesture with FTouch...
To install this... youll need some older framework... go to the link below and download. After downloading go to your program files on your computer. Look in "microsoft .net framework" folder and upload and install the "netcf.all.wce4.armv4" i wouldve uploaded the cab, but the xda attachments wont let me

you have to map it to a button and then click it. the preset hot button should be the start button. so essentially, you have to open it twice (once to fire up the program, and then again to pull up the program)
are you getting any error messages?
I took the liberty of uploading the cab to MegaUpload for everyone.

ok nvm just as i posted this reply, the OP added the link. oh well, his link is the .msi, mine's the direct cab.

yeah, that did it. I didnt realize I had to essentially run it twice, once basically when the phone boots up, and then the next time i run it it will boot into the cool task manager setting. very neat program, a little under-featured though, but good enough to use for a cool alt-tab like program.

i read on their websites forums that 2.5 might be released, but i havent had any framework problems as of yet. it also seems like it only blended in with the existing framework on my device which is a good thing. if this isnt updated by the original developer, maybe someone could ask him if they could continue where he left off, because its a great app. also, they might want to check out his flowfx, there is a dev kit for. itd be really cool to be able to call each transition before a program loads up. our wm6 phones would OWN if this could be implemented lol

Thank you, works great on my Sprint Touch.
Can upload on rapidshare? I can't download from Megaupload
sorry for the complaints about MegaUpload, it's much easier to download from for me (I really dislike Rapidshare's wait times). I never considered other people
Hold up, i'm uploading to Rapidshare right now.

I can't believe there was a program like this all along. It's freaking sweet. If you all like it, you might want to go over to the developer's site and post on the forum that you'd like him to continue. I think he basically gave up on the program because he didn't think there was any interest.

Come on Favio. You support the new General PPC Questions thread. You help out there as much as any other member does. If you keep answering questions in threads like this, they will never stop. But thats up to you. Thanks for the support up there thought.

Dude, calm down. People are still going to post new topics and other people are still going to help them, no matter what. I fully support your idea but you need to relax a little bit.
You made your point and started a successful thread. But trolling posts and harassing people for helping is a bit much. If people don't want to use your thread, then they won't.

Here's the files to install that HTC Home Theme, blatantly stolen from that ROM above. I used it for my own use as I think it's awesome, but didn't know if anyone else wanted it.
Kudos to Mossi and Anja31.
@Anja
Thats a great looking comm manager, I've been looking for something like that to complete my diamond theme, can I borrow yours?
Thnx

Turn off HTC Home, install the cab into internal ROM and softreset. Your HTC Home should have the new icons, etc.
didn't work for me either.
If the cab is not working for you (my first attempt at creating a cab, which I tested as working on my Polaris), then here's the files you will need to copy to your windows folder using Total Commander or Resco Explorer or GSFinder.

That's the rom. I am nothing to do with the development, so I can't help you on the comm manager. Post requests directly to the developers. Maybe they can help.

GadgetFreak Taskbars - QVGA

I will be posting all of my QVGA taskbars conversions here in one location. These are all primarily ports of Tsowen's excellent work that I have been assisting with at PPCGeeks. This is going to take a few days as I consolidate everything, clean it up and re-organize. I do have a GSM mod to the block taskbar that I will be posting. Everything else is mainly CDMA, but I will do what I can to help since I no longer have a QVGA device to test things on.
When installing the Taskbars, remember to go in the following order:
1. Backup your device
2. SDKCerts Cab
3. No2Chem Battery Driver
4. Once those are installed, use Total Commander or Resco Explorer (preferred) to make back ups of all the dll's you are about to change by adding .bak to the file name.
5. Use Reso Explorer or TC to add the entire contents of the file folder in the zip to you root \Windows file in main memory
WARNING for QVGA Device Owners: For the Bluetooth Icons to work, you need to have the Opal/Jade Phone Canvas installed for this to work. I have it and all of the files you will need for it to work on a QVGA phone here.
I'm having a hard time getting things loaded up on XDA, so for now, here is the link to my main posting at PPCGeeks. I will get all of this set up and better organized for y'all soon.
One other note, these are for WM 6/6.1 ONLY! They will not work properly if you install them on a 6.5 sys.

Block Icons Taskbar Theme
Here are the Block Icon Taskbar sets, both CDMA and GSM:

}
I am also including the Opal/Jade Phonecanvas. You will not get the Bluetooth Icons if you do not have this installed. If you are on GSM phone, do not install the Dan's HTC Touch Phone Codes Fix. That is for CDMA users only.
If you choose to install that Dialer, use and advanced task manager to shutdown the cprog function before installing and backup your system.
Install in the following order:
1. Phone Skin Cab
2. SJ Patch (if you want hte slide to answer feature. If you do, make sure you disable that feature in S2US. They don't play well together)
3. Dan's Touch Fix Cab (this fixes the dialer codes and 911)
4. Open the included folder
5. Albert's Phone Canvas Lock Cab
6. Use Resco to copy the loose files into \Windows
If you already have the phonecanvas cooked in (That's the best way...) you don't have to install this.
The MMSRes dll is for you Arcsoft users:
If you are using the Rhodium Notification Manager, there is a cab for you that will skin the signal icons and large notification icons. Do not install this if you are not using a sys of 21000 or above. This will replace the HTC Large Title Bar.
And finally, here is my revolver battery. There are 2 versions, one for 100%, 99, 98, etc. The other goes by 10s. I haven't actually tried this for QVGA yet, so I'll be interested in getting some feedback.
Taskbar 6 Elite V3.1 QVGA Conversion

I have to run to a meeting, but if you click on the link to PPCgeeks, the detailed instructions are there. Essentially all you need to do is install the SDKCerts cab, then the no2chem 6800 battery cab, then the taskbar cab of your choice. Just so you know, I have not yet added my GSM mods to the block icons set. That is so far the only one that has the GSM signal icons modded. It's on my list of things to do...

Thanx, i will try and report.
Thanks for this, I have a qvga device (Kaiser) and I too just get the confidence to try this, then I read something about CDMA - and I then see all these lovely icons slipping through my fingers.
Thanks for all the good work that you and Tsowen have done here and over at PPCgeeks. It almost makes me want to get a VGA device just for these gorgeous icons.
I can see this is a work in progress - I'll be patient and maybe I'll get the confidence to have a go at this...

It's really not too bad, especially when doing it by cab. Once things settle down and I get the boy to bed, I'll get my GSM version of the Block Taskbar up.

Except for that when I rename phcanOverbmp.dll to phcanOverbmp.dll.bak, my P3600i makes a new phcanOverbmp.dll and then won't allow me to overwrite it with the customised one...
As the files are just overwritten, any chance of getting a cab for each toolbar? It would be much easier than tracking down multiple files and installing in the correct order...

The block taskbar is installed by cab. For what ever reason, XDA keeps blocking the upload of my cab for the Elite TB.

Mega. You gotta get the little one's sorted!
Thanks for your work.
I'm obviously missing something here -
I have installed sdkcerts.cab, done a soft re-set. I only want the block icons, not the skins or dialpad etc, so I then tried to install the GF Block Taskbar GSM.cab It gets 90% of the way through installing it, then stops and tells me installation was unsuccessfull.
I know it says install 3rd, do I need all the other junk in my trunk from post number 2 as well?
Thanks GF, for holding us numptys by the hand.
Also is the elite taskbar only CDMA?

That's a new one. I'll look at how I have the cab constructed and make sure I didn't miss a security setting. The 2 file activates the single percentage point battery meter, so yes you will need it for this to look right. And the Elite TB is GSM ready.

It's a work in progress. I hope to have this done soon.
Thanks for the great work! I can't wait for some QVGA 6.5 to tide me over until I finally buy a VGA device.
I take you still have to make the cab available for the Elite?
I am kind of lost as to the manual renaming...
Is there a file manager able to automate such a thing?
I have TC but it can't be done as far as i know...
