[HOWTO] Modify any DLL or EXE Files you want!! - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hello!
Now I found a way to Edit DLL, EXE, MUI and all other files for WM5 and WM6!
I ever had problems with the Signature in the Files bur now i have the Solution!
In This package i attached, there is a UnSigner, Signer, Editor and the Certificate for the Phone!
Step1:
First you must Unsign the file you want to edit!
Just go into the Unsign dir and drop the file over UnSigner.exe.
A DOS-Window will popup for a short time, the file is now unsigned!Step2:
Now you can edit the file! I placed the reshacker into the package...
Step3:
If you edited the file successfully, you must sign it again!
Go into the Sign dir and open siggner.exe. Then choose the file you edited and take the "SDKSamplePrivDeveloper" Certificate.
Press "Start sign process" and close it
Viola, now your file is Modified and signed!!!

thx 4 tools in one place.
Method is rather..known, but good.

Is this can work with Windows vista

modify the manilla2d exe with this to support animated weather other than rain???

Can i use this to change the Samsung Omnia Menu to different programs being shown? Instead of TouhPlayer Kinoma?

I was able to unsign, modify and then sign a DLL file. But when I opened it in PE Explorer to check it, it gives me errors that the file is now too long. Take it you can't make additions, only changes?
EDIT: Here's the exact error I'm receiving, not sure if it's fixable or not;

MEditor: Simplicity
Hi guys,
I've decided to make it quite a bit easier. Just open up the attached .zip
file, extract the MEditor to Program Files, and double-click Install Context
Menus.reg (confirm if a warning pops up).
Now, to edit a dll, mui, or exe file, just right-click on it and press Edit with
ResHacker. Once you're done editing, just save the file, close ResHacker,
and it'll take care of re-signing the file for you
How it works
I didn't mean to make this post a big deal, but I'd just like to explain how this
thing works. I've added the necessary registry files for adding or removing
(if you choose) the Context Menus for "Edit with ResHacker". It calls
C:\Program Files\MEditor\open.bat, which opens a batch window (do not
close it until you're done editing, it will close itself) that removes the
readonly, archive, system, and hidden attributes off the file, then unsigns it,
then opens ResHacker.exe to edit it. When you close ResHacker.exe, it
automatically signs the file and adds the readonly and system attributes
(hidden and archive aren't necessary). Not very complicated if you think
about it, but it's what I use

Same problem. Internal adresses are being messed up. Tried expanding array in IDA and adding complimentary bits in HEX Editor. No luck. This has to be possible right? Shifting the entire code a few bits as to add a few characters here and there? Please someone, this is driving me nuts.

Mortscript....duh !!

Hi All
I'm sure someone will be able to tell me what I am doing wrong
I have loaded Mortscript on to my E650 and have copied a script from this site and saved it as wireless.mscr
When I run the file from Windows explorer - it opens the file in Word on my E650 and does nothing.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks
Uninstall Mortscript and then reinstall it. I guess it's a matter of file association in the registry.
mortscript
Thanks....have tried that and it still does not work.
Any other ideas?
You must run once the mortscript's executable to create the associations with the mscr files.

yep, ran the yellow file that was located in the \program files\mortscript folder. It gave me a message to say the file associations has been made yet the docs still open in Word !!
AAAARRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!
Try deleting the key at HKCR\.mscr...then opening mortscript.exe Then try to open your script. It deletes the file assc.

Thanks...where would I find the HKCR\.mscr Does that involve editing the registry as have never done it before
Yes this is a registry key. You will need a registry editor Total commander has a free one. Then just navigate to HKey_Classes_Root(hkcr) and locate the folder .mscr open it and delete the key in there..
In order to locate and edit the registry in total commander tap the / in the top right corner of the screen right next to the .. Then double tap on the \\ then double tap on Registry then HKCR then .mscr and delete the key labeled default ,or you could just double tap on it and then in the box provided type MortScript
key
Thanks,
have done as suggested, removed the keys, have removed and reloaded Mortscript. Rebooted phone....and they still open with Word Mobile !!!
Jeez - can it be so hard !!!
When you open that key what does it say.... when you open word go to menu and options and in display....click on word files, i dont think that will work but its worth a try

mort
hi
Am getting somewhere now...turns out the file was named wireless.mscr.txt so have edited it to reflect the proper extension. Will try again now
Thanks again
well that makes a lot more sense...since the actual ext that you are opening is a txt. just drop the .txt
It's probably far more simple: You script has the wrong extension. It must be .mscr, not .psw, .doc or .txt. The default Explorer hides the extension, so your file's pobably named "somescript.mscr.psw" (or *.doc) but is shown only as "somescript.mscr". Use an explorer replacement like Total Commander or Resco, or the desktop's Explorer ("My mobile device") with "Hide extension for known documents" disabled in the options, and you'll see the wrong extension.
Edit: Oops, didn't realize there's a second page...

Changing icons

I know alot of chefs have there own icon sets for thing like the program menus and setting and things. I also no that the settings for these are linked by an "icon.lnk" file to a dll file in the windows directory. I need help trying to edit these icon's, Whether it is through the dll file or there is another round about way.
A play by play would be great, thanks in advanced.
(i have already tried editing through a dll editor and connot seem to find a program that doesn't have an error trying to edit it (everything from wordpad to Resourse explorer to pe editor.)
you can use icon changer http://www.shelllabs.com/
pull the exe file off your device. then load it into icon changer. change the icon then put it back on your device overwriting the old one. this will change the physical icon of that program.
i have used it several times and it works great.

You can edit a DLL with reasourse hacker. You just need the UNSIGNER, and MSSIGNER. first you unsign, then you edit and save, then you sign.
simpler than you think. the hard part is looking for graphics
SK Shortcut Manager
SK Shortcut Manager does the trick for me
http://www.s-k-tools.com/index.html?sksmgr/m_sksmgr.html
BUT, it's paid...
Also i've found DLL file with many (400) old school icons (attached with this post).
A little preview: http://www.wenzlaff.de/download/twicon/twicon3.jpg
U can use also your windows DLL files (shell32.dll).
That's the way i manage all my icons
Hope this helped you

[HELP] How to register a dll?

I try to create a program which consists of
.asx files (to show online tv channels),
.lnk files (shorcuts to the .asx files) and
a .dll file which contains only some .ico files (icons of the tv channels).
I added all these files to a cab using WinCE Cab Manager and tried to install it on my ppc. So far so good. The problem occurred when the message “The program can not be installed. Choose another location” appeared during installation, just after the process bar was filled.
Although I have no idea about computer programming, I have created many cab’s with WinCE Cab Manager for skins I have created for several programs. Anyway, I realized that the problem occurred due to the .dll file, since this is the first time I add such a file in a .cab.
I created my .dll file using a .dll from another program which had only icons in it, as well. I deleted them using Restorator 2007 and I had an “empty” .dll sized 4KB. Then I added my icon files using XN Resource Editor.
I searched the Internet to see what might be the problem with the .dll and I found out that I have to “register” my .dll file. I really have no idea what this means but it needs to be done. I also found an option in WinCE Cab Manager for “self-registering” file, but it didn’t work either.
So, the question to you dev guys is how can I register my .dll file, or should I create it from the beginning with another way?
Please help! Thanks in advance!
sorry to repost but it seems that posts keep coming in this forum and this thread is already in the second page and I'm afraid that noone will see it and reply to it. By the way, is there any special sub-forum for such questions?
This may help. I use his instructions to edit existing DLL's
http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-...88904/lisbian-taskbars-for-i910/#entry1023568
It will unsign the dll which will probably fail on your custom dll but it should sign it when you are done editing.
NilsP
Many thanks for your suggestion but unfortunately it didn't work for me.
As you said, this is mainly for resigning already signed .dll files.
Any other help will be appreciated. I can attach it here if anypne is willing to help. Or just tell me the way. Thanks!
I deploy a few dll's with my app, without any problem. If the installer complains about the location, what did you specify where it should go?
There are 2 approaches to solve this problem:
1.) If you have a private key to match a certificate in the device's certificate store, sign the .dll and .cab with this private key and it will be installed with elevated privledges, and be successful. To facilitate this you can install the "SDK Certificates" - and sign with the matching private key (you should be able to find these on a search, term "SDKCerts" or similar)
2.) Look for an "Application Unlocker" or other security reduction tool, run it, and you should be able to install the cab. On this note, if you check here, it will give you a more technical overview of the security policies. You want to change 4101 / 0x1005 to "SECROLE_MANAGER" (8) - which tells the system to install it with elevated privledges. Also make sure 4102 / 0x1006 is set to 1 to allow unsigned applications.
6Fg8
I don't believe that is the location I specified that causes the problem because when I deleted the .dll file from the .cab, it was installed properly. How do you create your dll files? With programming or you just edit existing files? If I send you my .ico files, will you be able to create the .dll file for me?
Da_G
Thanks but both approaches seem very complicated for me!
So, will I need Visual Basic in order to do this or is there any easier way? Can anyone sign the dll for me?

Yes with programming, C++ or .net. Never had any issue with signing. I can try to make a dll if you send me the icons (or post them here if they aren't too secret ).

I have sent them to you by pm. They are not secret at all but I will create a "program" (wannabe ) with that dll and I want that program to be a surprise for users of the forum where I'll post it. I may post it on xda too, but it's nothing important.
Many thanks!

This happens because you've changed resources in signed file, which changed file checksum and invalidated it's signature, and Windows installer refuses to install file with invalid signature. But it won't refuse to install this file WITHOUT signature at all - so use unsigner (search for it on XDA) to remove signature completely; if you encounter error, try to remove signature from original (unmodified) file, and then change resources in it...
6Fg8
the_ozyrys
Thanks to both of you!
6Fg8 has created and signed the dll for me and it finally worked, but I also tried the_ozyrys' method and it also worked.
So thanks to baniaczek too, since he created the unsigner.exe.
Everything worked fine with the dll. Now the cab is installed properly.
However, I have another problem. Just after the installation of the cab on my ppc, it seems that the device freezes for about a minute. This is propably because my cab contains a lot of shortcuts (.lnk files) that go under Programs folder.
So, I would like to ask for another favour, if it's possible. As I said I intend to give this cab to others too. Since this delay can make them believe that my program has freezed their device, I would like to make the cab restart the device just after installation and after uninstallation as well. I think this is made with the "Setup.dll" which I don't know how to create.
If anyone knows how to do this and has the time for it, could you please create this setup.dll for me. If the cab is needed to do this, just tell me to send it to you.
Thanks in advance!
Anyone? Plzzzzzzz!
If you want to sign .dll or .exe u can use the apps posted in the two posts below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=432041
or
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3530246&postcount=18
raykisi
Thanks for your answer but 6Fg8 and the_ozyrys already helped me on that.
My question now is how to create a setup.dll in order to make my .cab to prompt the user to restart the device after installation and uninstallation. If anyone can do it for me, I can send you the .cab which I alreday created and you can add the setup.dll with those functions.

Editing XT9 words on PC?

Hi, is there any way how to edit XT9 words on PC? I know about the et9MyWords.exe app in WM, but I want something more comfortable...
Thx
EDIT: Ok, I've found that editing HTCMDB.txt from Windows directory does the job...
Nice. Thanks for this info.
How do you edit and save HTCMDB.txt file? It's a system file found under Windows folder. Won't allow modification of this file.
Any work around?
htc x9 edit
i used total commander (explorer dose not allow you to modify system files) to copy the file to sd card (otherwiswe wont let you edit it) edit+save and then copy to windows folder (overwritting) and that s it
I was able to do it using Total Commander. But it doesn't seem to work. The additional words i put in there were not recognized. And the edited file with more words is only half the size of the original file. What went wrong?
in fact i've translated part of the words allready existing in the file (takes some time to do them all manually) and it worked thow i did not take notice of the final file size
I can't add new words to the list? Only change existing words?

how to change start icon and wait cursor from modules

hi to all
how i can change start icon and wait cursor from modules in the kitchen?
You need to edit shellres.192(96/128).dll with Restorator
can you explain me better please?
stronkyz said:

1)Recmod the file (if it is in modules):unzip the osrecmod tool and drop the unmoduled file over recmod.exe
2)Unsign the file dropping it over unsigner tool.(ofcourse unzip the file tool first). You must then see your file loosing 1-2kb...
3)Open the file with restorator or reshack (its free but needs more time to do the job)
4)Change the icons (they are in ico extension so your images should have the same extension and dimension).
In the first series of icons is the waiting cursor.Find another series and replace them.Nice cursors are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803756
Images must have the same dimensions as the original ones.
Find the start icon and replace it.Save the file.
5)Sign the file with msigner tool. You must then see your file gaining 1-2kb.
6)Remodule the file and drop it in its original place in your kitchen.
Maybe unsigning and signing not needed if you cook the file but I have not tried it.I always sign my file.
