Hello,
I look for a software for the diamond, which allows me to put out(switch off) the screen. And at the same time to leave the GPS in function(office) as with the htc touch with the touch of setting in a stand-by mode.
The diamond cuts the GPS and thus tomtom also.
Thank you
Fab to France
I would also need this function as it will save a lot of battery time while running gps-tracking softwares...
Search for PSShutXP. This gives you the option to turn off the display without going to standby completely. I mapped it to the Long_Power.lnk. Works good. But battery consumption is still verry high while tracking GPS with display switched off.

Thanks for the tip mate! I'm running mainly Run.GPS without map, so with the screen switched off, I will hopefully get a few more minutes of use at least =)

I use Gps Speed Sentry and I'd like to have backlight always on when the program is running.
I'd like also to disable to pocketpc standby timer normally set.
GPS speed sentry has no options to do this. To disable each time backlight and standby manually is too long.
Is there a solutions for this problem?
Thanks
it stays on using a car power adaptor - is this an option?
maybe a solution, but I'd like to find a solution also using battery power..

Guys its one thing after another!
This thing is in urgent need of a Rom Update!
The back light doesnt turn off after the specified time! Not completely anyway.
What happens is that it just dims out to a very low backlight and still stays on!
The same thing happens even when its connected to activesync on the pc!
Anyone else experience this?
Thanks in advance for any help anybody can provide.
Dead Cell.
I think that is normal behavior. If you need your backlight off while the device is still running, I think there are 3rd party apps that can take care of that. The only time I want that option is when listening to music, and TCPMP can map a button to toggle the screen off.
If your phone is connewcted to PC then it's powered and stays on low light setting when not used. But if you disconnect it from power/pc, after a specified time, the screen turns off. At least on mine. However, when listening to music the screen never turns off.

My Prophet backlight used to go completely off while the device could actually be on, pressing the D-pad could bring the screen backlight on again. It was still possible to see that the screen was on by holding it up to a bright light.
When unplugged from the power supply, my observation has been that the Trinity back-light doesn't go completely off, it changes from normal brightness to very very dim, but not off. It goes completely off when the device goes into standby.
I use Mortplayer for listening to music, which has a feature that turns the screen off, not just the back-light, which saves a lot of battery power.

Not neccessarily... It has a setting on the Battery option where you can select the amount of time after which the back light goes off both on battery power and external power.
Anyway mine stays on even when its not connected to the PC ie, external power.
It just goes dim after the specified amount of time and stays like that untill the device goes off.
Thanks.
When you say 'goes off' do you mean 'enters standby'? When not connected my p3600 dims the backlight after 30 seconds. Two minutes later it enters standby (that's the time I set it up from settings). However it only enters standby if I don't listen to music.
Hi,
I noticed the same proble, I never the used the original Rom coming with the Trinity cos I bought it last Sat and I installed the DOPOD test rom with GPS support straight away.
With my TYTN when I'm on a call after a while (a minute) the screen togles, however with the TRINITY the screen stays on (brightness goes away) but still there (no togle).
Can somebody with a non-gps dopod rom confirm that they do not suffer this behaviour?
thanks,
Elsral
My Trinity is still original (Dutch). When in the backlight settings, I slide the indicator all the way to the left, the backlight still is on (very low, but it is still on).
A colleague of mine has a Hermes; when he does the same thing, his backlight is off completely.
Also, before the P3600, I owned an Ipaq 5550 which also was able to switch backlight off completely.
Hope this is corrected in a future ROM update...

German Trinity Original ROM here. The device switches the screen completely off after the amount of time I have selected. It is the same behaviour that I know from my other pocket computers and it seems completely ok. Something wrong with the Dopod ROM?
I have a problem with my Touch HD in the way that everytime the screen shuts down the GPS seems to shut down. Regardless if I Push the power button or if I let it shut down by itself.
For example if I'm recording a track it will make a straight line from the point where the screen shuts down to the point where I turn it on.
I'm using Garmin Mobile XT and Kartex (a software from the Swedish lantmäteriet).
Have been using both softwares on my old E-ten Glofiish X800 and it worked fine.

I think the problem is that its not the screen that turns off, but your device is going into suspend mode.
You will need an application which prevents the suspend mode and turns just the display off.
Is there a way to keep the GPS on in suspend mode?
Is there a way to change the registry so the GPS would not shut down in suspend mode? If not, what application would you recommend to use to only turn of display but not put the device in the suspend mode?

Install MobileMagic from here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=449654
On the options tab, choose GPS while power off.
I was just about to suggest the same thing. Mobile Magic allow for GPS to work while in suspended mode. There is even a feature that automatically calls upon what ever GPS app you have to start automatically when GPS signals are detected. Pretty cool not to mention a slue of other features this nifty app has.
Thanks gadgetuk437 and band27! Great app although a little bit too "robust" as I don't need the screen rotation & all other features. I guess I will only start it when I need to use GPS.

I am in the same boat using GPS Watch which provides a track which can be outputted to Google Earth
Is there a registry hack that will allow the GPS to continue to be operated when powered off?
Thanks
Thank you gadgetuk437 and band27 for your advice but I don´t seem to get MobileMagic to work.
I have installed it and I have choosen autostart, start hidden and GPS power when power off. Have done nothing else.
MobileMagic autostarts hidden but doesn't prevent the GPS from turning off.
I have been using screenoff but that app doesn't really work either.
I raised the question at HTC as well and got the answer that this is something that is done by design in order to reduce the battery consumption.
I just don't understand why, If I didn't want to waste power I would of course close the GPS app before i turning of the screen.
Yeah, same here. After some testing I realized Mobilemagic's function doesn't really work. Even thought I also have the function to keep the GPS on selected my Garmin Mobile XT still looses the GPS fix as soon as the device goes into standby

I'm away to do the same...
I have Garmin Mobile XT with the Snowranger map sets for tracking my snowboarding runs. I also want to leave the phone in my pocket all day and track where I've been!
I tried it a couple of weeks ago with my Diamond whilst running. I had the music player running and Garmin tracking me - and it kept my log file (which I imported to google earth) over my whole 45min run.
I'm using a program for GPS tracking that records the current placement of the phone. I found out, that the GPS receiver is not working when the phone goes into standby mode (screen shuts off, usually after 30 seconds). During that time the program doesn't record the coordinates and only resumes after I wake the phone up.
The only solution is to set the timeout off, but the battery consumption increases too much. Is there a way to keep the GPS receiver running but still be able to lock the phone/shut down the screen?
Not a solution of your problem but still might be interesting for you...
I use GPS Cycle Computer for logging my track. It is working even in standby and has a great feature which is an option to select GPS run interval (no need to log every second) to reduce battery ussage.
Thanks, that's a very useful app.
Hi,
When i had my prophet before i could run GPS Tuner (or other GPS Softwares) and turn off the screen (button on top i mean) without having any difficulties. Now with the Iolite i have the problem, that when i turn off the screen the GPS gets turned off as well (as if the thing goes into standby)..
Is there any way just to make it run the software and the GPS no matter if the screen is on or off?
Just go to task manager and add it as exclusive. However it trade off with high battery consumption rate
Or you can use attached registry change. However, I am not sure if it is working as I didn't checked it yet. Maybe you can try it and inform us, if it is working.

there are 2 ways which might be helpful to your problem, but i am not quite sure.
1. some nav software will provide such options that will keep screen on or turn on screen whenever instruction is comeing.
2. before you start to use nav software, go /start menu/setup/system/background light/, uncheck device off and check screen off after xx minutes.
just try, good luck!

What exactly does this file do? Does it keep the GPS running even if your phone is on StandBy (screen and buttons turned off)?
I'm in search of the same solution. I want to keep my GPS program running, but I want to turn the screen and buttons of, when I put it in my pocket.
Or is there a separate program which can simulate a standby?
