Hi guys,
I just got an idea about keyboard for PPC... that will be more finger friendly, PLUS, screen friendly.
Would it be possible to build something like FULL SCREEN keyboard overlay the screen, but still able to see the running software and able to see words is inputting? Just like a transparent keyboard layout on the screen, but doesn't really eat up the screen space. Not sure if I describe well enough. What do you guys think?
I am not a programmer, so I can only hand off my idea and pass the development to any volunteer programmer who has the knowledge and ability to make it.

Sounds like a great idea
Post your suggestion on the PocketCM.com forum and maybe the keyboard over there could be adapted.
As many of the screens on WM6 are designed for the built-in kb, the dialogue boxes can get cut off if you use an opaque kb.
Thanks. I've done so. I hope to see something like this one day. =)
That is actually a very good idea. I wonder how difficult it would be to do? I know nothing about SIP programming, heh.
Unless I am mistaken, it's impossible to do that as WM6 does not support transparency or graphical layers

I don't think it is... All programs that appear transparent (and there are many, throttlelock, mortbuttons, s2u2 volume etc etc) just take a screenshot of the background and draw over that. Which means that they just appear to be transparent - if things change beneath, you cannot see them, what you see is the screen like it was when you launched the program.
I hope someone corrects me on that, but I am pretty sure it works like that

So make it take a screenshot every second or so...?(Dynamo 3 does that, not for transparency but for thumbnails, but it does that)
I don't know if it's doable. It's easy to get the current screen (what WM is currently painting), but not that easy to get a screenshot of a background program, or the desktop. Programs that do that (eg, CapSure) switch to the program you want to take a screenshot of first, so even if you could switch to the program, take a screenie, and get back to where you were in 1 second, the screen would "flicker" all the time.
About Dynamo, I didn't check the latest versions of Dynamo3, but maybe it takes screenshots of the running (front) program? And I don't think it takes screens every second!
Even if I am wrong (very probable), and it's doable, I don't think it would be very practical! For locking programs, this would totally ruin baterry life. For a "transparent" keyboard, 1 per sec would not be enough, and it would probably ruin responsiveness.
Then again, I never tried to play with screenshots and fake transparency for a WM program, so who knows! Maybe! O_O
I've tried to do that for ThrottleLock. My first choice was using the WM_PRINT window message, but it's not supported for windows mobile ... other choice was to send the WM_PAINT message or a refresh and trying to get the DC associated with the window to use BitBlt to copy it to a target Bitmap... Not luck as the window will not be painted while it's not visible... As far as I know it's not possible... If anyone figures out another way to get it please let me know
todaylife can do that all. fully transparent pngs over a changing background.look at my screenshots of my skins, everything is working in background. dont know how dazzlingdazz made it but its true.
In TodayLife, it's the app itself that's painting the background... So it's easy to paint other stuff on top and still show the main screen underneath. Unfortunately not the same thing we want other applications & wm interface to show beneath the transparency.
Android supports multi-layer drawing for applications, let's hope wm7 has it too.
Some 'marshall wait cursors' are transparent. But I don't know anything how they're working.
I had this idea myself about a year ago, but thought that it is impossible to make a transparent sip, because it is not displayed over a program. It's under it. I don't know how to say in English, but I thought the sip reduce the fullscreen-size.
But maybe someone can write a program that is no real sip but transparent over other programs.
I mean like the phone pad, it is no real sip but used as an input method.
Sorry for my bad english, I hope you can guess what I mean.

Marshall waitcursors work with screenshots too.
The SIP doesn't reduce the screen size, some programs however can detect it and re-draw itself, making it seem like the screen size is reduced - but not all, it doesn't work like that I think
There are already fullscreen keyboards over other programs, that's not the problem, the problem is the transparency
excellent idea.
transparency is supported.
Look at RetroPPC clock. the only thing that I had to do to make my clock transparent, was to use PNG-24 format.
so the clock just revolved on top of the background even when it had to shift for the scroll bars.
in any case, the effect can be achived. what about a flash based keyboard?

Hi, after installing MarkVan's true VGA package in this link
http://www.jaml.com/MvRTrueVGA/, I have identified the following issues that I'm still unable to solved. I thought that a special thread to address specifically problems after this installation might be helpful.
I'll start by first listing what I've identified as problems:
1) setting>system>backlight screen could not be used. This problem is serious, as somehow by default, the backlight is switched off after just a few seconds in true VGA mode. Even if I try, using QVGA mode to change it such that backlight will not be switched off, as soon as I toggle back to the true VGA mode, it is switched off after 10 seconds again.
2)setting>system>clear storage screen is garbed. It is difficult to make up what the input instruction are in performing hard reset. Not critical but would be nice if the screen could be fixed.
3)setting>system>power screen is garbed due to wrong sized icon. This is minor problem.
4) Setting>system>TV out screen title has the wrong font. Minor problem
5) Setting>system>VueFLO screen title has wrong sized font. Minor problem
6)setting>connection>comm manager screen is garbed. Not being able to control the connection could be quite a problem. In this application, the Settins>Wireless LAN screen is also garbed. I can solve this problem by installing Commmgrpro to give exactly the same functionality, however. Therefore, I would say this is not really an issue. But would be nice if someone already know how to solve this.
7)setting>connection>wireless Lan heading and the screen is garbed. The screen could not be used. The font sizes within all tabs are of wrong sizes. Again, CommmgrPro solves this problem by replacing this.
8)setting>personal>phone (pin2 and "more" tab) are garbed
9) Phone. Although I've applied VJbigpohne, I'm somehow unable to get exactly the same effect as what vj has in his screen shot. His screen shot showed that the numbers are nicely sitting in the centre of the phone buttons and the phone stretches all the way to the bottom of the screen. Mine looks different and ugly. The numbers are sitting to the extreme right edge of the buttons and there is a blank space at the bottom of the screen. I would like to fix this to look good
10) Spb GPRS monitor plugin has wrong sized font. As a result, I cannot see the download speed of my connection. The main application itself, which shows in chart form the usage has no problem. I have been looking for another product that works fully under VGA mode to replace the Spb GPRS monitor, but none of them gives me the download speed (They only shows the total MB downloaded, but not the Kbps info)
11)Pocket music. In landscape mode the option and playlist buttons are missing. In portrait mode there is no such problem. edit: this is not the vga problem,as it also behaves the same way I'm qvga mode.
12) Software Input Panel, or the soft keyboards, are soooo small, that they are unuseable. The standard big keyboard was nice as I can use my finger to type it without covering up the screen. If it is not possible to use the original soft keyboard, then I would like to use the HiKeyboard, because this keyboard has the ability to also do the job the the Spb full keyboard, as well as provide a calculator keypad. I like Hikeyboard the best, among all the ones I've evaluated. However, with MvrTrueVGA, I'd be forced to use only the resco keyboard. I prefer not to pay for resco keyboard, and to pay for Spb full keyboard, when I can just pay for Hikeyboard. I also much prefer HiKeyboard over Spb Full keyboard because it has the option to reveal what you have typed without exiting the full keyboard. Coming to the worst I'd get the Resco Keyboard although it is not as good as the Hikeyboard, so I supposed this is not the most seriuos matter.
13) Quick GPS program does not display correctly, and at the bottom of the screen display does not reach all the way to the edge of the screen. It looks ugly. Also, you can't see vital date and validity information on this screen.
14) Pocket Mechanics - The icons are too big and the characters are too small. It look real ugly as compared to the QVGA appearance.
15) My VOIP client SJPhone does not stretch all the way to the bottom. In landscape mode, the bottom part of the applications are cut off, while it leaves a big hole on the right. EDIT: qvga display landscape mode is also faulty I'm the same way.
16) In QVGA mode, my H and G indicator for data download has disappeared under true VGA mode. In place of the H (which means HSDPA connection is available), it shows the "connection is active" indicator instead.
In place of "HSDPA is in use" indicator, it shows just the signal strength without indicating whether I'm on a UMTS or HSDPA connection.
There might be more problems with other applications which I have not listed, and if you know of any, please add them in as a repository for all of us to look at.
It is possible that some of you have got solutions to the above problems.
If so, let's post the solution here, quoting the problem number if you can.
Thanks guys and gals
I'm not sure (and I'm happy if I'm wrong) but I think the best answer is:
"Yeah, but what'cha gonna do..."
WM5 is not intended to be used in full 640x480 mode, roumors will have it that WM6 is. So let's keep our hopes up.
But you obviously have more problems than me. Most screens are good and readable for me, except the phone (before applying VJBigPhone), Clear Storage, QuickGPS and the G/E/U/H icons + signal level. Of all these, the GEUH and signal level indicator is the only thing I "need" fixed (I can live with the rest).

Hi Moskus,
Thanks for the reply.
May I get more specific about what you're having?
a) You mean your soft input panel (on screen keyboard) is not too tiny? Are you using Resco keyboard to overcome the problem? Are you able to use the standard with no problem?
b) Your backlight adjustment screen is okay? Using the standard or replacement which consumes additional memory?
c) What about yout comm manger screen? Are you still using the standard or using a replacement which takes up more memory?
d) Your phone does not leave a hole at the bottom after VJbigpohne is applied? The characters on the keys are centered or also to the edge? I saw VJ555's screen shot and its as beautiful as the standard. Mine is aweful looking, although it works. Are you having the perfect looking screen just like VJ555's or are you putting up with the less than perfect looking screen?
e) Do you use SPbGPRS monitor? When you click the task bar icon, does the pop up screen display correctly? Or are you not using this?
f) Your quick GPS is displaying okay?
g) What is your ROM version?
h) What it your os language?
Thank you for sharing these information.

I think we have different "standards" for what the problems are.
a. I'm using the Resco keyboard, since the original is not showing up (as described in many other threads here and at the Qtek 9000 forum)
b. The backlight adjustment screen is OK.
c. The Comm Manager is "squished" but usable. I would prefer it if the icons were bigger, but I can use without any serious problems.
d. The phone does leave a gap at the bottom with the last displayed picture, and it would be nice if it didn't. But I can use the phone without problems.
e. I haven't tried SPG GPRS Monitor on this device. However, I do not have problems with the "home icon" that Magic Button is displaying in "Task Bar mode" and I can press/click on the other status indicators.
f. The QuickGPS application is also "squished" together as the Comm Manager is. But I can read when I last updated and I can find the "Update now" button without problems. I am able to use the program, but it could look nicer.
g. My ROM version is 1.25.409.2 (03/21/07).
h. My language is (not supprisingly) norwegian.
So TrueVGA is not perfect, and it probably never will be (until WM6 I hope). But I think the advantages (insert pun here) outweights the disadvantages. Using my Advantage without TrueVGA is not an option for me anymore.
I agree with you that it is not an option for many people. I guess I need to lower my expectation a little. It was just that after seeing the beautiful screen, the initial euphoria was somewhat dampened by the ugly screens for some places and for some program.
I'm using VGA mode most of the time, and use the largest font in the setting>system>screen>font selection due to the strain on my eye if I use other fonts.
One of the key problems that I had using trueVGA initially was that because I could not control the backlight setting, everytime I toggle to VGA mode, it revert to turning backlight off in 10 seconds. There is absolute no way to change it to stay on for longer time. So it was very frustration to look at an extremely dimmed screen which is totally unreadable outdoor. This problem seems to have gone away after two recent hard resets. With that problem gone, I guess I can live with the other imperfection
I had a simular problem with the backlight control --- I have installed "Todaywarrior" and I can control the backlight from the today screen now while in VGA mode.

Hi leblancrs,
Thanks for this info. What can today warrior do? Does it let you specify the elapsed time before backlight is off?
what else can it do?
You have the website link?
Spb pocket plus can adjust backlight, but not the time elapsed setting, I think.

Hi Leblancrs,
Downloaded that and tried it. Unfortunatley, this actually is not doing what I was talking about. While it provides a slider to control the backlight (which I can already do in many different ways without problem in VGA mode), it does not appear to have a facility to specify how many minutes must elapse before backlight is automatically switched off (battery and main would have a different setting of course). Or am I missing out something?
Well ive ordered one of these devices on the basis that Windows Mobile 6 offers VGA. Im pretty confident that is official not just hopeful but Microsoft have been known to dissapoint before.
If thats the case then I guess this device will be up on ebay pretty quick. Im not going through all the stuffing around for VGA like what you're all experiencing and like what I went through for Universal VGA. Despite the fact that converting to VGA seems to be a much easier process now.
Hhhmm
I have installed MW6 on my device and no native vga support I am afraid.
Oh well.

I used truevga for a while, although I didn't experience quite the same amount of problems as Eaglesteve I did have distorted comms and dialpad screens and was unable to change the brightness. There were a few other niggles but these were the prevalent one.
After getting over the novelty of tiny icons and lots of space on the today screen I eventually removed the program. Now IE and Opera support high resolution it seems like even less reason to use it.
There seems to be no REAL advantage to its use other than to view lots of icons at once.
Taking all the problems into account I can live with chunky icons - they're hardly offensive to the eyes. and I suppose didn't pay good money for a 5" screen to squint and have to get my pen out evey time I want to type something or navigate through menus.
Much as Microsoft DO neglect certain applications and functionlity with windows mobile I think that they have made a conscious decision not to use VGA and this decision would have been made for a reason, though we may never know it.
I'll install MVRTruevga again and give it another try now and see if my opinion alters......

There are also a number of apps that look pretty strange with MvRTrueVGA. But I'll put up with some cosmetic defects for functionality. I just love being able to see a couple days of appointments, device status, weather info... plus an ilauncher strip, all on my today screen!

I had the same excitement myself initially, though I found it difficult to press these icons with my fat fingers and inevitably decided that it was easier to just navigate to the program folder and leave essential apps for the today screen. I hope a new VGA solution is developed soon which makes the icons a bit bigger and throws up less garbled screens and program glitches.
In the interim does anyone have link for how to alter the sidebar/ softkey size so they look like thse in MVRtruevga? my internet is very slow on my phone today so searching is proving very frustrating.

It is certainly easier to edit word and excel documents in VGA mode - I'm surprised MS didn't create a highres option for their office apps like the one in PIE.
You can change the default font size via the system>screen menu instead of switching to VGA for a slight improvement.

- Fix all trueVGA graphical problems. Icons, screens, etc. I would like to run in trueVGA full time without having these types of issues.
- Unlock Extended ROM so people can put their own apps in for the next hard reset. ;-)
- Put the "Tray Display" utility into the ROM so people can show or hide their trays. File name "traydisplayinstall_196.CAB".
- Setup the "BlueTooth Tray Status & BT Audio Util" on the ROM. File name "btIO-0.5.CAB".
- Maybe the functionality to add/remove program icons from the tray without having to modify the registry? ;-)
- All black VGA theme. Similar to the default WM6 theme but all black.
- If possible, maybe an updated version of Pirazu so we can control a mouse cursor with the joystick?
- Alternative to BlueMouse so we can use a BT mouse cursor on the device. BlueMouse is nice but it costs.
Make it work like "Touch" may be the looks....

For me, these first five would be a darn good start.
- With #1 - Usable dialer in TrueVGA would be #1 on my list.
Couple more (may already be fixed in WM6, but have yet to plunge):
- WiFi On/Off is flaky unless you actually go into the Comm Manager (e.g., PhoneAlarm and other programs are not effective)
- I still have problems doing multiple mappings to Win and OK buttons. AEBPlus does this kinda, but then other buttons get mucked up. Given few number of buttons, this is really limiting.
Wish list:
- USB-powered Beer Tap. I know the low-power port might be an issue, but I'm sure this should be doable. Integration with MS VC would also be great, "Computer, pour beer." (All I can say is, it's been a long day!)
Actually I should have just put mapping of the vueFlo API. That should open up the rest of the developers to building cool widgets also.

Damn guys...you're not asking for much are you...hehe. Actually I quite like the sound of the all Black VGA ROM with Touch like interface.
But hey, I'll settle for a an all black super reliable and damn fast ROM in vanilla favour.
You guys have made some great suggestions, that I can't argue with. All I can say..is I'd love a ROM that I can use my Spb Backup files with...without corrupting any software, so when you release version 0.1, 0.2 etc...it will still be compatible with my backup files, making the switching of ROM's a quick thing to do.
I hate my phone being out of action. and having to re-install everything again.
I third the black vga theme. Also in vga mode is it possible to make the start bar a little bigger so it is more finger friendly. Something the size of when it it is in qvga mode would be great. Also when you push the start bar and the drop down list pops up it would be great if that was larger with larger text. Also at least for me in vga mode in wm6 none of the 3g, signal strength icons show up in the start bar only the time does.
The only thing i'm against is the vueFlo. Except the part about using vueFlo to sense when to rotate the screen.

How about an icon on the task bar that rotates screen.
Also, when using the device in QVGA mode, smaller icons on today screen, start/program screen, start/setting screens.
When in VGA mode, but running a QVGA program , show a matching size bigger soft key buttons.
Show connection icons (H, 3G, G) correctly when in true vga mode.
(edit) Quickmenu in english is out !
Hola amigos, since I don't use wisbar anymore I'd love to find such a launcher.
I want cascaded, direct access to the (initially submenu) programs list
I don't need to have recent apps or settings (builtin start menu already does the job quite well).
Cubes are useless to me (too slow, uncomplete lists, don't use the contacts fav. page)
Do you know something like that, or is it still to develop ?
Would you like it as well ?
And at last, does someone know how to make a shortcut that launch builtin start menu ?
Thanks for reading !
SmallMenu seems to be the perfect candidate for you. the start menu that SmallMenu uses is customizable, so you can take out the Recent Programs and Settings as you wish, as well as adding other items such as Running Tasks or Task Management Tools, among other things.
or WisBar Lite.
Thanks for your answers, I just tried both of them:
Wisbar lite is too slow at scrolling application list and can't directly display programs (one need to open the programs submenu).
SmallMenu is really cool. It's uglish, but it does its job well.
I may write another launcher to fit exactly what I need with a better look.
Meanwhile, thank you for the hint !
So, what you want is a pretty SmallMenu? How pretty you want it to be? I mean.. er.. care for a photoshopped of what you are having in mind?
Ok, I just played a bit more with SmallMenu & it's almost perfect.
Actually, I'm member of the Ban-The-Stylus association
Above all I want bigger buttons (I should have mentionned it before), for easy thumb operation.
Also a better look would be nice.
So I need a bigger font (that looks better), separators between each row and a gradient background for each row as well.
The ability to have running tasks displayed in a submenu is also great, and so would be the closing icon if it was, once more, bigger.
Or much better, if we could close the application with tap 'n hold !
I'd be glad to purchase if that wishlist is fulfilled, the problem is, I can't even find a Contact link on their homepage, while the development seems active. Weird.
Do you have an idea how to contact them ?
Small menu is great and all. But isnt there any program out there that can cascade the start menu and dosent give you all the extra stuff thats in small menu and wisebar lite?
I just want a program that cascades the start menu. no task manger, no soft reset, no battery meter and so on....

You can disable them. I don't think your concern is about 20/30kb storage space ?
I've been using SmallMenuPlus for a few months and find it too useful to be without. Organize your programs into like directories and it's too easy.
With it being an execute file you can link it to a hard button, cube, shortcut or even a FTouchFlo launch swipe
Now I have no use for the default WM Start bar except to get into Settings (SmallMenu seems to forget where this is on every S/R).
I have no problem navigating and selecting with my thumb, although slightly larger icons wouldn't be rejected.
Taping the small icon in the top left corner can be hit-and-miss sometimes so I made my own larger one and select it with the 'Use external skin for start button' option. This way I can't miss it but still leave a little room to get the default Start bar if I need to. Make your icon 25 high and any width, mine is 42x25.
No one is aware how to contact Small Menu authors ?
Do we get an email address to contact them when we register ?
I'd like to see if they can do something about my requests before I register.... but no forum, no contact form, no email, too bad
alternatively you could try psw indibar 2.7.0 for cascading menus, (have tried the lot and to me, this one's the keeper), and it tops up by giving ram and or battery meters on the top bar, or anywhere you want.
Customization is a pain in the beginning, but once done you;ll be happy

Try [email protected]
how about "quick menu"... a totally free cascading menu supporting today themes without handicaping the original today menu....the only problem is...only simplified chinese version is available....
http://www.yonsm.net/read.php?358&page=6
note: the latest version is 2.7 which was released on 22/10
by the way, this is his email address: [email protected] egg on him to release an english version if you like quick menu as i do^^
Thanks a lot for both suggestion and contact link, I'll give them a try later tonight !
I have sent a mail to that guy. His other software is in english so I think we have a chance.

I'm giving up on trying it, too lazy ^^
Does it support font customization (size) ?
Lastnikita,
This is something I am very interested in, if that gives you any motivation.
I too used to use Wisbar but it was far too hit and miss for my liking. Sometimes it would load in, sometimes not. It all depended on teh theme in use at the time as it was sensitive to some, not sensitive to others. In the end I pulled it.
Will keep a watching brief on this thread to see how you get on.
Cheers
WB

Not to sound like a commercial but if plain old vanilla cascading start menu is what you want then why not use WA3 with the default theme which looks pretty much like the WM6 default and disable all the bells and whistles?
I've never heard of a case where the default theme wouldn't load -- it was usually the fancy aftermarket themes that added all of the extra graphics and sounds that caused the loading problems.
can't you just use wm5newmenu?
Maybe this has been discussed before but no one tried to develop the idea.
well instead of S2U, i prefer to have a gesture that i choose to unlock the device... so no one can unlock it other than I... if im dont have these programming skills
anyone is able to do it?! it can be a modified version of A_C's S2U2...

whatever G2U ...
I like the idea of this
Cool thinkin...
No passworded needed, just a gesture.
Someone needs to copy the Microsoft Origami thingy where you unlock by tapping a certain sequence on a picture of your choice, with more security gained by moving to a smaller grid size.
ell, honestly, if you delete the images from your S2U2 directory, that should accomplish the same thing. You would just have to remember where to slide from. Or use your DPAD.
lawmangrant, i think you're missing a handy side-effect of having G2U: you can still view the today screen. I imagine that you can view the today screen, but not be able to do anything until you gesture. If anyone uses PointUI, it's kinda like the builtin lock. You see the main screen until you tap, upon which the lock screen comes up. It's pretty nice (personally use s2u2 instead) but G2U has potential uses.
It's a good idea, especially if you don't have the instructions right on the screen, it's a good locker to keep people out of your phone.
It should be Gesture2Unlock (or G2U for short) and it was discussed in the Kaiser forum here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=362231&highlight=gesture
A_C, the author or S2U2 was contacted, but he didn't think he could do it, as you can see from the thread...
I still like the idea.
I have a program in mind that does exactly what you want...
hm.. not exactly...
you have to tap to 4 or 5 different points on your touchscreen to unlock your phone...
but I don´t know the name at the moment....
I´ll try to find it....
This is a great idea.......
strange !!! walking down the street today i had this exact thought
may be some day!!!!
This was good, but doesnt work anymore...
http://softava.com/archive/pp/otp_features.html#
interesting. Would be very similair to taking a biometric of a persons signature. presumably tho one wouldn't want the signature to be drawn as you gesture2unlock, but instead "draw" onto an invisible notepad.
its no easy process (have researched biometrics) as the important part if the learning/recognition algorythm which will probably involve some neural network coding (ouch but fun).
What you need is something like this!!!
http://bip.golana.pub.ro/~mmihai/sign/index.html.
I've emailed Mihail about this (the author), pointing him to this post. I will post his reply as soon as it arrives.
Here's my email:
Dear Mihail,
I came across your website whilst looking for clues as to how we might implement a fellow forum contributor’s idea on xda-developers.com (here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=370632&page=2)
His idea was to unlock a pda using a gesture on the touch screen. To my mind that mean signature which lead me to search for some algorithms on the net. Your implementation was particularly interesting as it seems quick to operate, has low memory footprint and could work on a low spec machine (such are many pda’s).
I was wondering if you implemented such a system, or if the algorithm you have developed has been release for others to use, commercially or non-profit.
Your input into the discussion would be highly valuable.
Best wishes
Sean

I see pluses and minuses to this approach as opposed to using s2u2 with the deleted slide graphics.
If you want true privacy when someone picks up your phone, you wouldn't really want them to see your today screen especially if it contains appointment and tasks info, etc. That's where I think using a modified s2u2 would be better.
If you don't have appointment info on your screen or nothing that is "dynamic" or constantly changing except the clock, then you could skin s2u2 to "match" your today screen and place the clock exactly where it is on your today screen. For example if you have HTC home as your today screen, you can skin s2u2 clock to match the position and font as HTC home and then take a screenshot and modify it to a wallpaper, cutting out the clock par. The tricky part is the missed call and sms counter. S2u2 has the potential to disply that info but to replicate that look of htc home would require major changes, probably requiring A_C's help?
Of course if our devices had the horsepower, we could modify s2u2 to just take the screenshot of the today screen and load it as a wallpaper everytime it starts up, maybe a mortscript, but it would probably would be too slow realistically.
Im glad that u liked the idea... A_C said that he doesnt have the skills to do it.. but im sure he can help...
i don't mind if the appointments info appears on the screen, but i prefer no one can access all other applications... typing a password takes time... especially when activated side by side with S2U2...
Why a signature recognition? How about a gesture system like the one found in firefox plugins:
https://addons.mozilla.org/pl/firefox/addon/39
https://addons.mozilla.org/pl/firefox/addon/12
They're based on eight directions - four sideways and four diagonal.
Directions are defined as:
U - up
D - down
L - left
R - right
7 - up/left
9 - up/right
1 - down/left
3 - down/right
So to program a gesture you just need to input the directions of strokes it consists of.
For example URDL would mean drawing a rectangle starting from bottom left, and then going up, right, down, left. You can also describe more complicated gestures that way - R2D1L7U9R would mean drawing a circle starting from its top point and moving right.
In my opinion biometric algorithms don't make much sense, since they would need a styluys to work - try to draw your signature using a finger
Simplified gestures should work with finger as well as stylus, and should still provide more than enough security.
Great minds think alike.
What I wanted was a way to use touch to unlock the device very easily without it being easy to copy. I also wanted data to be safe should the device be reset.
I thought of using the standard S2U and just using a skin which didn't make it clear how to unlock so as to deter casual snoops.
There must be a way to do this! If no-one comes up with something soon then I'll dust off my programming books and give it a try.
the new Ftouch Flo a.k.a FtouchSL has some new gesturing features ( like corners )..maybe this would be useful
Hello guys!
I think many of us came to the thinking that, though TouchFLO 3D is great UI, we should make something alternate, something that better fits our needs. And now, i think i'm ready to create one, but first we should decide how should it look like and how should it operate.
So, i propose a kind of "brainstorming contest" where you decide about the look of a new UI. But to avoid this turning into an annoying feature request list ("more tasks on today! please! please! please!" ), here are the rules:
- NO text-only suggestions - every post s/b illustrated with pen-and-paper drawing
- NO screenshots or photoshop cooks - only hand-drawings or something that look like em (yes, you can use digitizer tablet )
- drawings are NOT required to be professional - just something to illustrate you thoughts
- you are NOT required to develop the complete UI - you may just post suggestions about UI parts, but preferred things are unique navigation idea (try to forget about tabs), apps\tabs convergence, brand new useful apps/tabs
- best contributors ideas (possible with Manila API) will be implemented and their names will be listed in "About..." screen
Posts that violate rules (even best of them), will be ignored.
That's it.
maybe this is too open ended.. do you haev some ideas of your own that you might want to put forward?

I'm already implementing ideas of my own
I just wanted to know what do folks think/dream about
show us whatcha go then!
I think D-MAN666 doesn't want to influence people, this is a brainstorming If he starts with his idea, it is probable that nobody will post a completely different concept...
This might be a useful start for interface design:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=397220
One thing I would love to see is a radial menu:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pie_menu
Similar to tap-and-hold for a context menu, but instead of a list popping up, a radial menu appears. You could fit 8-12 options around the circle, which would cover TF3d's pages.
So in usage, tap for the popup radial menu, then:
- swipe up for Contacts
- swipe right for Music
- swipe down for Home
- etc
IMO, it's much easier to be accurate in swiping at different angles/directions than it is to be precise with the default TF3d slider tabs, so you could really speed your way through the interface. The same could apply elsewhere: tap and hold a contact, then swipe up to call, left to SMS, right to email, etc.
For other thoughts, here's a read on interface optimization (for the technically inclined):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitts's_law
And maybe later if I'm bored I'll draw some mockups
http://microsoft.blognewschannel.co...bile-7-to-focus-on-touch-and-motion-gestures/
sorry for breaking the rules, but everyone else is lol...thats a link to the WM7 concept design...along with theoretical gestures...i really digg the battery bar on the bottom and the reception bar...
Ill be the first then...
A quick drawing i knocked up... manila stays very much the same but basicaly show page navigation on the manila both horizontal and vertical..
I hope its clear enough
2 ideas here
I am going to break the rules since I'ma t work and can't really be seen drawing lol.
Here they are:
- Make use of the touch capacitative ability of the the buttons panel. It's made up of three touch panels. Maybe a swipe from left to right to unlock and right to left to lock.
- Display applications within tabs. Ex: Being able to display Icontact when sliding to the contact tab.
And for UI inspiration, I would look here:
http://www.throttlelauncher.com/portal/setupsaskins/45-091setups/69-new-minimal-flow-theme
Ok, here's my concept
The general idea is to keep most of manilla look'n feel, just remove useless animations/transitions, and change the home screen.
Changes : on the right side of the screen, a scrollbar similar to the "contacts" one appears. It controls the content of the box under the clock.
On the left, a button to maximize (take the place of the clock) the box, and a fast vibrator/ring permutation button.
So, by scrolling the bar, the content of the box changes, could be call log, contacts, fast program launcher, music player, and so on.
The idea is to keep complex functionalities (camera, tv, etc) needing full screen accessible by the manilla bar, and quick&fast features such as logs, sms, player accessible on the main screen.
Nice idea, man
Hi there,
just a thought on a possible gui for the UI, instead of tabs, layers (don't know if that's possible, but it would be very cool imho)
you could have multiple layers, and have the layers in the backgound fade out and become smaller (perspective) and use a swipe up or down to navigate
Anything happening on here?
Just wondering

I'm thinking that the Ximoon idea is quite good but one thing that should be included is landscape option and I'm not talking about TP version but one with the same functions like the portrait one
I like the idea of the circular menus...
well first of all thanks to you guys you are doing awsome work and its always funn spendin my free time in your forums
now to my idea
does anybody know the film : the lawnmower man? theres one scene almost at the end of the film where he tries to escape to the internet i think the idea is quite amazing movn in a bowl and havin litle windows to select.
what do ya think
this is the link to the movie scene just skip it forward to about 5 minutes
