TCP errors in Netfront and no Internet Sharing - Networking

I have a weird connection problem for a while now (started to come up some time after a rom upgrade, but i am not sure it is really related):
every application works fine when accessing the internet by means of 3G, except netfront 3.5CV. it gives me a TCP error.
if i disconnect the cellular data, and let netfront connect himself, it works perfectly well.
now i have the problem, that internet sharing doesn't work either. somehow i think the problem is related. because when i connect my PC to my i780 by means of bluetooth PAN, the PC reports the network connection as local only, and i cannot access the net from the PC. but the i780 also doesn't try to build up a connection, it seems.
I only have a single connection in the settings, altough the automatically generated o2 settings (generated by the operator settings thingy, i dont use o2 but three) are there too, but disabled in advanced config.
can somebody help me on this? I am on EFN ROM 4 U now and use a Vista PC, but i think this shouldn't matter with a PAN.

Slow home network access

Hi,
I have a strange problem with my Glofiish X500 / WM5. No issues with establishing the wifi connection to my access point connected to the home desktop machine with Windows XP. The desktop is conneted to the Internet through the ADSL modem. The ADSL connection is shared. So, once connected, I can go to the Internet from my X500, sync Outlook, etc. The Internet is fine. But when I try to open a shared resource on my desktop, it is very slow. It takes couple minutes to open almost any folder. Copying files takes forever. But it is only if I use standard X500 connectivity tools. Once I install the Wifi Companion tool, all connections become just flying as they should. Copying files is not an issue. I am wondering what is that magic in the Wifi Companion? I tried to tweak different things without it and nothing helped. While with Wifi Companion, no special tweaks are necessary - automatically assigned IP / DNS are working just fine.
I am observing this issue only with my home network. Once in the office, I can successfully browse the local network without Wifi Companion. You might reasonably say - why would not you just use the Wifi Companion? Well, I would, but it is not stable. I cannot go to a connection setup - the setup screen is immediately rewritten by the connections list. The Companion's taskbar icon disappears pretty soon after the installation while it keeps working. Sometimes wifi connection is established, but Wifi Companion does not catch it and shows no connections at all.
So, I would really appreciate if anyone has any ideas what can be done with my home network in order to let the X500 work with its own tools. Perhaps it is something to do with WINS setup or something else that Wifi Companion sets up?
Thanks,
Vitaly

I'm suffering a similar problem. I use a Prophet running WM5 and I finding that it takes forever to establish a connection (if at all) with shared folders on my PC (running WinXP). Once connected the connection is slow and often drops. I find that this is the case no matter what file browser I use. However, I use a VNC browser (PTvnc) and I find it works quickly and flawlessly allowing me to browse my PC's shared folders without any issues. Obviously PTvnc handles the network better than the standard file browser ... so it's not a hardware issue but rather some sort of software setting. I use a Belkin WIFI router.
Any help greatly appreciated.

i780 GPRS connection issues with some applications

I am using Samsung i780 and have issue with some applications.
Most of applications work over GPRS and over WIFI without any issues: Internet Explorer, Opera, ActiveSync and Google Maps. These applications can both: initiate and use existing GPRS connection - I guess they use Connection Manager API.
But some applications do not work over GPRS
Metatrader 4 Mobile, PocketPutty - they can connect over existing WIFI connection, but not over existing GPRS connection, they also do not try to initiate GPRS connection.
PocketPutty is not "connection manager aware" (I know that from forum). About metatrader I could not find any information.
I tried many different settings in connection manager, but they could not solve this issue.
I have also tried to reflash my i780 with "WM6.1 WWE ROM - V3.3XG RELOADED" but this didn't help with my issue.
NOTE: On my i600 metatrader 4 mobile worked over gprs without any issues.
Maybe there is a magic registry setting or something? Maybe there is something I am doing wrong?
I am using Orange PL 3G/HSDPA connection.
Could somebody help me, please?
Accidentaly I have found a workaround which I do not understand.
When I change in connection manager
From:
Internet: My ISP
Work: My Work Network
To:
Internet: My Internet
Work: My Work Network
something strange happens:
GPRS connection is automatically established after powering on the phone (as with prev settings)
But IE is unable to resolve domain names, metatrader is unable to connect (on prev settings IE works)
When I disconnect my connection, and connect again opening page in IE. IE opens this page and metatrader suddenly connects! (meta trader never connects on prev settings)
I have no idea what's happening.
I found workaround which I completely do not understand .
Internet: My ISP
Work: My Work Network
I have added modem connection to My ISP.
This changed, that after power-up internet explorer works.
Next step is: go to connection manager and disconnect data connection (using HTC connection manager - not data call manager).
Then: connect to the internet using internet explorer or active sync
Now run metatrader - it works.
My questions:
Why is does it work while other configuration do not work?
Why do I have to disconnect data connection? - it is connecting first time using exactly the same connection settings!
How can I make this work in a civilized way?
UPDATE: PocketPutty also works after this workaround

VPN via 3G/HSDPA is still unresolved ?

Hi Everyone,
Having the Shift as my workhorse since some moths, there is still one annoyance I couldn't avoid: my VPN connections are interrupting the Internet connection when using 3G/HSDPA modem connecting to Internet in Vista/WM.
I was trying to search through all existing threads, but I still don't see anyone finding a solution.
I think the root lays in WM somewhere, since I cannot establish a PPTP connection in WM neither. In my case it is certainly not caused by the data provider, because I have checked it with them.
Let's try to put our knowledge together to sort this out !
This is normal behaviour I suppose
When connected to the VPN, the VPN must provide you with either a proxy or another internet gateway, otherwise you are just connected to a private network...
Maybe you mean something else, but from what I read it seems like you never got on the internet with VPN active.
If you did, and you are talking about intermittent network errors, then only high performance settings on your power settings may help.
If you could give more info I could help more. IP/Proxy/Gateway/ did it ever work yes no etc.

Lucid,
Thanks for replying. I will try to explain it another way.
1. When I am connected to Internet via Wifi, I have no problem using my VPN connection. I get authenticated and connected to the company network and the connection stays active as long as I want.
2. Using 3G/HSDPA Internet, the following happens:
- I start the same VPN connection, and get connected.
- Than my 3G/HSDPA connection breaks up, and the PPTP dialin stays alive - it doesn't have any use this way of course.
- When I disconnect from VPN, the 3G connection comes back automatically.
I hope this is more clear this way, any hints are very welcome !

Thats exactly the same problem that i have had for over months - it just doesn't work and I can't see any way to get it to work - so much so, I don't use the Shift anymore - got a Tytn II and redfly and just remote desktop to a PC on the work lan!

The VPN that you are running is on VISTA side.(if yes try to see the routing table) by default the VPN get the default GW, and try to change it.
If this is the issue then you can go to the VPN connection properties -> Networking ->TCP/IP -> Properties -> Advanced -> IP Setings -> unchek the use the default GW on remote network.
regards
Is this a problem caused by this vista "feature", which disconnects the 3G Modem from Vista, as soon as an other network is being connected via WLan or via cable?
I think this is a stupid feature. Instead of that the users just should set the metrics for the networks manually and you can be sure, that Vista always uses the WLAN instead of the GSM/3G modem, if both where available.

alazarid,
Thanks a ton, the TCP/IP part did the trick ! Now my VPN has a use ).
cheers !
Ok guys heres the issue...
At first I thought this problem was associated with the fact that there may have been some software monitoring for other data connections, to disable the GSM modem when not needed...
After checking into everything, I found that there is probably NO software that does this...
Since WM handles the passthrough for the 3G connection, and ontop of that the actual endpoint for the data connection on the GSM connection is the WM side and not Vista, what happens is what when the VPN creates a connection and you opt-in to use the default remote gateway (I prefer to use it, because I require this for the work I do), the default gateway is updated on the 3G network interface.
I beleive that this update of configuration, then causes the WM side to stop the connection because either a) it doesn't know howto interprit this or b) retries to create the connection because it thinks there is an error.
I havn't played with this for a few weeks, and have my fair shareof other stuff I deal with, so I cannot remember if WM NATs the 3G connection, but the key thing breaking this is the WM side.
I beleive that IF you did want to hack up a configuration that uses the remote gateway, you could configure a VPN connection under Windows Mobile and have WM connect to the VPN, therefor the PC would be using that connection (but wouldn't be aware that its connected to the VPN), therefore giving the user access to the VPN, WITH the remote default gateway being used.
Again, as I mentioned its been a while since ive gone tech on my Shift, but I beleive this is correct. If anyone wants to add anything, please feel free.

Convince Windows Live to use WiFi

Hi all,
maybe someone has a solution that does not involve totally disabling GPRS...
Every other app (TwitToday, Active Sync, Pocket IE, Outlook, GPS update, etc pp) prefers the WiFi connection over existing GPRS/EDGE connection, except Windows Live Sync/Messenger: Both of them constantly ignore the WLAN and instead open a GPRS/EDGE connection...
How do I force it (or, if easier, the whole OS) to only use GPRS then when no Wifi is available?
Thanks,
Marco
I achieved this by making everything use Work Network.....it uses GPRS when no WiFi is available only.
On the subject (not wishing to hijack the thread though) I have a similar issue. All apps work fine through wireless, however Windows Live (Messenger etc) launches and connects to GPRS/HSDPA/EDGE when a wifi connection is not present, but then errors with a "no connection" message. All other apps work fine in GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA mode but this...ideas?
Doesn't work
When I say in the Connections control panel that all apps should use something other than E-Plus Web (either My ISP or My Work Network), then MSN whines about connectivity problem.
When I leave it at work network and disconnect wifi, I get system error with all internet using apps - it "can't connect with the current settings".
So, I have to leave the "connect to the internet using..." to Eplus Web... then, all apps, including Pocket IE use WLAN if available, but only MSN still connects GPRS :/
Any idea? Why does f***ing MSN not offer what connection to choose, if it can't obey the system settings?

permanent connection errors wifi HELP!

Hey guys,
I use the program "NoData" that disables 3G and other services that charge money. So with my phone I only use Wifi when I found a wlan network.
However, I have serious problems with connection all the time.
->It started with SPB Mobile Shell 3.0. I can't access the facebook option to download some pictures of my contacts. Cannot connect.
->Then Mach5 webbrowser did not work on my Xperia. Did try it with 3G (enabled 3G from NoData of course) and wlan. No connection.
->Now, and that really annoys me: tryed to install microsofts myphone service that recently came up. After typing in my Windows Live ID (have connected Wlan) it says: Could not connect.
Are those problems linked to "NoData" or does any1 have a nother clue?
>Thanks
edit: it has nothing to do with NoData. Uninstalled and got the same problems.
On My X1 the WiFi works great.
I have even enabled all Security Settings for my Private WLAN Network.
For me it looks like that your WLAN Network dont work really good.
Can you access the Internet without any Problems with a Laptop ?
I guess you will have the same Problems.
For enabling wifi i use normally the "Comm Manager" and enable there the WLAN.
After this i call up the WLAN Programm and select the Right WLAN Network.
Thats all.
For disabling GPRS 3G i use also the "Comm Manager".
I dont use any other programms.
My experience say even that if both Options "WLAN" and "3G (GPRS, HDSPA ..)" are enabled wlan is preffered.
I still search the Option in Windows Mobile where i setup the Phone to use WLAN as the standard Internet Access.
On my previuos Phone Sony Erricsson P910i this setting was possible.
