How to prevent phone from using certain connections? - Networking

Hi,
I have a Windows Mobile 6 Standard based phone (actually an HP one called IPAQ 514) and would like to configure its connections.
What I want is that my phone does never connect to the internet by my phone provider but only with WLAN and Bluetooh. This means I want to disable the internet by my provider completly. Is this possible?
The setting should be used for all applications on the phone and also for those I'll install in the future. Currently I removed GPRS connections, except for MMS and I removed "DFÜ" (German). Anything more to do?
How to set up Internet Explorer?
Thanks for your help in advance.
Greetings,
Andreas Balzer

I don't want to go online through my provider either so I simply deleted the media net profile on my phone. Not sure how your HP works, but something along those lines should work.

if you want better controll, you can leave all dial up/gprs connections in there for moment when you really need it, and just disable and enable the one you need. this is simple small utility, which do the trick - modaco no data - http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility/

Suddenly PIE doesn't browse to websites! Stuck "Locatin

Enough is enough.
I had the same **** with my old PDA2K and now again with the Exec... I've spent 20 hours thus far on that ****. I just hard reset my machine yesterday and now again this **** happens and I cannot fix it.
I am surfing using UMTS/GPRS.. My definitions are FINE. There's only one connection. It was always fine that way on both the pda2k and the new exec.. but it stopped working now... it could be that some program messed up this ****, but i wouldn't know which.
Trying to browse to a site.. I get PIE saying 'Locating..." then after a minute or so saying "The page cannot be displayed or downloaded blah blah blah"... But the 3GUMTS is connected just fine.. Note that MSN Messenger doesn't work as well (I think that's because it's uses the core engine the PIE uses). Strangely, using networking utilities (vx) I can ping with the machine and even get HTML pages using web addresses. So the problem is not DNS and not a connection problem.. Just probably some damn problem with the operating system not recognizing something.. The 3rd party vxutilities for networking are bypassing that **** hence why they can browse the network just fine.
Tried deleting temp internet files and cookies nada... I also tried soft reset (about 20 times).. nada.... tried deleting the connection and recreating... nada... tried searchiong the registry for my connection name after deleted to see if traces exists.. nada...
Getting tired of this ****.. only hardreset solved it last time and i'm getting sick of becoming the machine's slave rather then the machine being my slave.
Help would be grately apprecaited..... I am sure it's ****ed up registry entry or something like that... I don't have many programs isntalled on my machine as I just hard reseted yesterday and my machine is in rather clean condition except for must have apps.
Help...SOS..

Thanks for trying to help...
but that's not the issue.. it's wwaayy deeper than that... ( i would have found it after 20 hours of trying had it been this easy ...
No proxy whatsoever. I never used Wifi. No work setup.. only "My ISP Setup".
anybody else? I'm offering $20 by paypal for the kind soul who can help stop my frustration WITHOUT hardresetting my machine or doing drastic moves. I need a permanent solution. If I solve it before so.. I will post my fix here...
UPDATE:
It's working now, though I don't like the solution, I changed in 'Connections' to connect through 'My Work Network' although I don't actually have any work network and I'm using it the same way I used the "My ISP" connection. It may stop working again though. i'll update.. but I still don't get it why the normal My ISP which always worked stopped working.
Are you, maybe, using the SBSH Weather? Are you, maybe, using the SBSH Pocket Weather?

com'on someone please help me out here. i'll donate another 20 euro to this site if i find a solution... What I did yesterday (changed it so that it will use only the 'My work' profile both both internet and work worked fine.. but only for 24 hours. it now doesn't work again even after multiple softresets as well as deleting and defining the account again.. what a frustartion.
Now only that i cannot use PIE, I cannot use Terminal Server as well.. which is a bummer
Toggle flight mode on and then off.
Have ever try to remove check box of proxy in network tab? With mine it works.
proxy issue
I noticed the same thing on my wizard, I think it may be caused by an internet explorer automatic configuration script. When I manually provide the ip address and port number of the proxy server, the problem does not appear. I changed this in Internet Explorer running on my PC and in the Work connection on my phone. I have also changed the setting in Active Sync to choose the Work Network setting by default instead of automatic.
The only way I got Internet Explorer back to work was after a hard reset.
It did not happen again in the past 1,5 week. I have been restoring the same backup after each of these hardresets so I had an identical install everytime. It seems to be fine now.
I don't know how WM5 handles Active Directory policies (if it handles them at all) that may change your IE settings as well.

My wizard does the same, it will work for a week or so and try using some random proxy for no reason!
I just uncheck the proxy tick box and the wifi connection works great with internet explorer. (well usually I tear my hear out for 5 mins and then realise its the proxy!)

PIE stuck at Locating
Hi mobiler,
I hope you have found a more permanent solution to your problem. I own an MDA Pro with TMobile UK and recently bacame plagued with the same symptoms which you reported, i.e., pocket explorer and opera mobile stuck at locating and not able to browse the web. Through some helpful suggestions on this thread I managed to find a solution which you may or may not have already tried. Like most people, I use my MDA pro at home on my home wireless Wifi network, and while away at work I use its GPRS/UMTS capabilities. I had no reason to think that these two features of the MDA Pro had any interactions with each other. In fact, I seem to remember reading somewhere that separate pieces of internal hardware provide these features. However, to my surprise/dismay I discovered that somehow the Wifi and GPRS/UMTS settings on the MDA pro are linked together. For example, if you setup a proxy server in the GPRS modem settings, which I recently did, without notifying you the Wifi connection also tries to use the same proxy setting. Vice versa if you setup a specific IP address and Gateway in your Wifi settings the GPRS modem connection also tries to use those settings and failing. The solution for getting back to normal internet browsing was to remove the proxy in modem connection by using its automatic settings ,and to tick the server assigned IP address for Wifi. This is a less than satisfactory solution, however, at least things are back to where they were before. I remain very puzzled at the interaction between these features and am dismayed and frustrated that there is nothing in the step by step procedures in each setting that warn you about a possible impact on the other.

XDA Atom - My GPRS connection start by itself! How stop it?

Hello.
I need your help since my Atom is lauching the GPRS connection without any instruction to do that.
I closed all the resident memory programs but still go on dialing!
How can I avoid the connection start withouth promptin it or only if I need it?
Thank You
Regards
There must be some program you have installed that's initiating it. I would suggest that you did a hard reset (after backing up your documents and contacts, of course) and then install program after program, testing a while after the installation, to see what the offenting app is.
same problem for me
Moved to proper section
Main reason
EMAIL - once an account is setup it will auto connect to internet for new email, default every 2 hours, but Windows Mobile do not disconnect GPRS after trying to get new mails.
ACTICE SYNC - if you have setup connection to EXCHANGE SERVER eg, google push server.
wil also auto connect all the time
Down side of Microsoft is that they didnt design to disconnect after trying to get email like Symbian(Nokia) do. so other manufacture will offer to design their comm manager to disable data auto connection but O2 & Quanta didnt go to the extend to offer this function back then.
Download NoData from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467813
toggle to DISABLE GPRS
this will stop auto connection to GPRS but it may stop receiving MMS as MMS also require GPRS connection.

Internet via USB/Computer Inet Access

Hiho,
Somehow I dont manage to get into the internet thought my USB Cable and the Computers Inet Connection, allthought I have set the option in Active Sync (4.5 Beta)...

Using Jesters 3.3 AKU ROM...
Greets
Oliver
Well my friend to tell the truth,I tried doing that for 2 days (since I bought my little machine) and still can't do it...When my brother had Qtek 7070 I just pluged in and Internet worked...But now...well,troubles...PLEASE GOOD PEOPLE IF SOMEONE CAN HELP US WE WOULD BE GREATFULL...Greetings!
I am not sure if there is something specific for the 3.3 ROM (or any other custom ROM) but here is what you normally do:
First, make sure that in Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced->Network selection->Programs that connect to the internet use...
you select 'My ISP'.
Then in PC side Activesync->Connection settings (right click the tray icon) select 'This computer connects to' -> 'The internet'.
Now make sure all firewalls are off or check MS site on how to allow ActiveSync for your firewall (this includes XP built in and 3rd party firewalls).
Hope this helps.
Sadly no success....
Prob with Internet connection
Hi everbody,
i've got a problem with my xda neo too. There is no way to use the pocket internet explorer or the wheater plugin from www.pocketnavigation.de, but icq works. There is no possibility to use the net via ActiveSync (4.5) or via W-LAN. But on both connections i could ping the device.
It seems that there's a problem with the device, but i don't know, where i should look to solve the problem.
Please Help!!!!
Karsten
I had the same problem with my O2 XDA Neo. It manifested as "error report NoXXXXXX" when I try to open the page in PIE.
Recently I find an Registry Add that solved my problem. Download to desktop and add it in PC registry (not PPC)
Hope that will help!

Mail via WLAN only?

I really searched hard, but couldn't find any solutions, neither in a german forum.
My TD2 can use the wlan for internet via topaz' integrated opera without a problem. But if it comes to adding mail accounts, I am not able to choose wlan as the connection to download / send mails (yes, all access data are correct, it's only that I can't choose wlan as connection). Due to obvious reasons, I don't want to use the regular networks of my phone provider. I just want to use my free wlan at home to send / receive mails. What to do?
Normally when a data connection is request, if pda has the wifi actived it first try to connect with a wlan. if it don't find an active wlan, then it connect by gprs or 3g.
if you want avoid the connection with gprs/3g it is advisable to disactivate it by the program Modaco Nodata.
Got it now, all worked well. But after I entered a complete mail account that worked, I entered a second mail account that I didn't configur till the end. Now it appears in the touchflo 3d, is not deletable and does also NOT appear in the WM Mail structure. It seems it only appears in the TouchFlo, which showed it again after deactivating/ enabling TouchFlo again. SKTools doesn't find it either. Dunno where to fin it apart from the registry, where can I delete it?

Disable Wifi Access! Any suggestions please?

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum, and was wondering if anyone can help me out. I have an Acer S200, and due to restrictions at work, we need to disable internet access from our mobile devices.
I have read various posts that state that this can be achieved by disabling wifi access by altering the registry keys, however none of the methods that i have come accross seem to apply to my Acer S200 mobile 6.5.
Sorry to be a pain, but does anyone know how i can do this?
Thanks in advance everyone.
alan
What are you talking about? Disable wifi? Why do you start it at the first place?
Internet access on mobiles can be done by active synch, data connection, wifi. It 's up to you to disable them by comm manager and active synch.
Maybe I get you wrong. What exactly do you need to stop?
Hi fresco,
thanks for the reply. Well, the organisation wants to prevent the devices from having the ability to connect to the internet.
I understand that there may not be a complete solution, but at the very least I would definitely like to disable wifi completely, since this is what I've read others have done. The devices do not have data connection plans, hence this option isn't a problem.
Apparently I can disable the wifi by altering the registry keys? Any ideas anyone?
Thanks.
hiya...
any ideas guys?
can anyone direct me to anything that could be remotely useful to the above?
Thanks
Hi alan,
let me get this straight. You work at an organization that has unencrypted wifi access
but doesn`t want it`s employees using it?
If your company`s wi-fi network gives access to the internet to anyone that connects to it why doesn`t the IT manager set a password to the network or enable mac filtering (prevents unauthorized devices-mac addresses from connecting to the network)?
I don`t know how you would disable the wifi chip from the registry
but if i were you i would buy a second phone for work use only.
SKTools
Try SKTools maybe there is a solution in the app.
You can disable the WiFi in registry:
Go to "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\State\Hardware]" and change the WiFi string to 0.
In the Comm. Manager the WiFI is disappeared and you are not able to connect.
thanks brainmaster.
the method that you suggested only removes the wifi display from comm manager, however that can easily be bypassed using the windows menu, to open wifi.
thanks...
then delete that one from the windows menu from Device > Windows > Start Menu
