Polaris registry speed tweaks - Touch Cruise ROM Development

Hi all
As i read in polaris tweaks thread and more places in other forums in polaris should set in registry:
Increase font cache in HKLM\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\limit
Enable FileSystem cache in HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\EnableCache
Increase FileSystem cache in HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize
Increase FileSystem filter cache in HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize
i tried many settings (i use Schaps Advanced Config) & used some 3D games & igo8 3D as "benchmarks"
(i.e in Virtual Pool when game starts table rotates in 3D can clearly see if its smooth or not)
so after i tried many combinations the best to set is
Glyph cache = 131072 (128kb in Schaps)
FileSystem cache = enabled
FileSystem cache size = 0 (auto in Schaps)
FileSystem filter cache = disabled
This way i have the most RAM free & 3D games run very smooth
This been tested in some real benchmark so we know official score what settings is best?
I use udk r6 rom btw/

Optimizing the cache value for Wizard

What is the best cache value to set for wizard?
Since it has such a small rom, I don’t want to max out every setting
This is my current setting
For increased performance, I set to 8192
For Glyph Cache:4096
For front cache:4096
It would also be nice if you guys can post your IE/Opera cache size

speed up wm5

I have come across references to the following tweaks in a few places. I have tried searching the forum for an explanation of whether these tweaks are effective or not, and what they might affect, and have not been successful. I wonder if any of the gurus out there could provide some info. I applied number II with HTweaC, and number V by altering the registry. The menu tweak works and speeds that process up, I'm not sure that I see any change from applying V. Is ther a simple benchmark to use? any info appreciated, thanks in advance.
I.
Increase cache: Noticable effect on WM5.01. Use any registry editor:
* Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\
* Change 'limit' to 8192 up to 32768
* Close registry editor (Save)
* Soft reset
II.
Disable Animated Menu (I know, doesn't relate much with the KB selector problem, but it speeds up the whole system anyway)
Use Registry Editor:
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\GWE\Menu,
* Change "AniType" from default 6 to 0
III.
Use any add-on that close the programs for real, not just minimize it (SPB Pocket Plus, or PHM Free Utilities, whatever)
IV.
Increase SD card access rate:
Use Registry Editor:
* hklm\drivers\sdcard\clientdrivers\class\mmc_class
* hklm\drivers\sdcard\clientdrivers\class\SDMemory_c lass
Change both BlockTransferSize from 64 to 128 or 256
(I use 256. Don't know if it make the reading/writing process any unstable, but so far no problem for me ever. Plus I have backup, so why worry)
V.
Affects WM5.0 and can increase overall speed up to 20%
Use Registry Editor to change from default 0 to:
* [HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS] CacheSize = 4096 EnableCache = 1 * [HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt] ReplStoreCacheSize = 4096
SOFT RESET
this quote is from xda boards. I also found referance to some of the above tweaks on htc wiki
missed this in the wiki. sorry. my question now becomes: wiki mentioned a risk of not having some items written to cache on sudden reset. Is this an issue? What is the risk?

I don't think they mean a risk as in a hazard, but rather the risk that it will just not be saved to the registry. Changes to the registry are not "written back" immediately - hence if you go for a quick reset then your changes will be lost. However, you can ensure a write back of new info to registry by forcing a write back. To do this long press the on off button until a warning message appears saying that unsaved data will be lost. Agree to this and device will turn fully off. Turn on again with a long press. This is simpler that waiting 15 mi nutes before performing a normal soft reset.

Cache mem

Anybody have change the cache memory size?
and if you did , does it goes faster with the change?
Thanks
There is quite a lot of actual RAM, in the past ive used wm5 with less (old hardware with hacked wm5 on it).
How about a RAM disk to put temp stuff on? Im sure the IEcache etc could benefit from being dumped on a ramdisk.
im only talking a few megs here, 16 maybe? 32even. If you close apps rather than leaving them open you normally have loads of free ram.
• Increase FileSystem cache
To increase the file system cache:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize = 4096 (DWORD decimal)
To return the file system cache to zero:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize = 0 (DWORD decimal)
You can set the value to pretty much anything you like
• Increase FileSystem filter cache
To enable the file system filter cache, speeding up overall performance with file mangement:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize = 4096 (DWORD decimal)
To return the file system filter cache to zero:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize = 0 (DWORD decimal)
You can set the value to pretty much anything you like
• Increase font cache
To increase the font cache, speeding up font rendering at the cost of a bit of memory:
HKLM\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\limit = 16384 (DWORD decimal)
To change it back to the default:
HKLM\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\limit = 8192 (DWORD decimal)
got all 3 of mine at 4mb, seems the snappiest combination.

Call for improved performance tweaks

Hello guys!
I have taken a look at wiki to find a tweaks that would improve performance/responsiveness of our devices (no matter what hardware or OS you are using) - whether via registry or via settings. I found several such a tweaks (by Cyphol) in Hermes forum:
Performance tweaks that will improve responsiveness of your ROM no matter which you choose (Only tested on WM6 but should work on WM5 too):
1. Improve performance/response time:
- Start > Settings > Phone => Keypad = Off
- Start > Settings > Sounds & Notifications; Under Sound Tab => Disable/Untick Events (warings, system events) - this tweak will BRUTALLY increase the responsiveness of Start menu and Quick Menu 2.7 (because system will no more have to search for sound files in the ROM everytime you tap the screen)
2. Your Windows Mobile device is just like your Windows PC. So, soft reset it before going to sleep (or whenever appropriate) once a day to make it runs good at all time (because of the memory leak when you close the program not all the memory is restored - sof reset restores RAM lost due to Memory leak).
3. Make sure you install the today plugin apps such as Resco Today Plugin etc. on the internal/device memory. Some today plugin can be installed on the storage card but it'll slow down your system performance a bit.
4. Do not install too many apps on the internal/device memory. Leave as much free space as you can on it. Check whether it can be install on the storage card or not. Normally, don't let it become as low as 8MB free but 10MB is enough already.
5. Know what you're doing such as tampering your system registry. Make sure it can be done and you're doing it the right way. If not, then leave it as is.
6. Never let your device go to sleep by itself. Do it manually by pressing the power button everytime when you've finished using your device.
7. Make sure you shutdown the 'Activesync' completely after activesyncing your device with your PC. You can use task manager (X-Button), Magic Button etc or you can use memory applet in setting > System > memory; Running Programs
More tweaks/hints form Nothin:
hint for cookers:
- removing unused keyboards, and today plugins(registry cuts) may have influence too.
- reediting system gfx resources(like gfxes in dialpads etc) may make device faster
- /windows/startup and hklm/init removals may have influence to overall performance and memory usage.
- wise welcomehead, default "windows default" theme, and generally optimised TSK's may have influenece too( good tsk needs stwater and tdywater ONLY(for portrait/landscape,only 2 images, not 4!), i can recommend themegenCE for making good, fast themes. also - themes without start image(today background only) may be good thing.
- stop using x-button! use alternatives - pbar, quickmenu...
- preconfigs are useful - every program may be optimised by its settings - include preconfigs in oempacks(rgu),
- big pagepool is usually..useless, keep it as small, as possible(min. 4 mb, some says, that 4.5 mb is optimal for normal usage)...
i recommend to use sktools to optimise registry - 24% smaller registry.
Aim of this thread: I will collect your hints/tweaks and put them in the first post, then I will update the wiki.
Please post what works for you and is not mentioned on this list!
Registry Tweaks (kudos Nothin):
Never hide the WirelessManager Tray Icon at the bottom.
Don't believe me?
Try it and feel the difference.
This is the key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\WirelessMgr]
"Keep"=dword:00000000 ;<--- (dword:00000000 to hide and dword:00000001 to show)
first thing:glyphcache.
known thing, BUT, not obvious:
my setting:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI\GLYPHCACHE]
"limit"=dword:00020000
it is 131072 dec.
internet says 32768 value as highest.
nope.
every program, that is using fonts will have faster response with very high values(ie,pdf readers, ebook readers..)
next one:
error reporting:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ErrorReporting\UploadSet tings]
"DontUpload"=dword:00000001
controversial one:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS]
"EnableCache"=dword:00000001
"CacheSize"=dword:80
and
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Filters\f sreplxfilt]
"ReplStoreCacheSize"=dword:00000080
small cache is freeing program memory - i CANNOT see almost any merits with bigger cache. both values should be equal.
next one, cache for system sounds:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Snd\Event]
"EventCache"=dword:100
small cache is working ok(default is 1536 kb!)
cache for extrom(useless mem eater,imo,as i do not use extrom,it is clean in my roms, completely empty).
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\ TRUEFFS_DOC1\FATFS]
"DataCacheSize"=dword:00000010
another ones are windows animations, turn it off, always.
qtek9100/wizard specific(may be useful for other devices too..) battery performance tweaks:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\SDCARD\ClientDrivers\Cl ass\SDMemory_Class]
"DisablePowerManagement"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\AsyncMac1]
"Group"="NDIS"
"DisplayName"="AsyncMac NDISWAN Miniport"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\AsyncMac1\Parms]
"DisablePowerManagement"=dword:00000000
"BusType"=dword:00000000
"BusNumber"=dword:00000000
"RebindOnResume"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\Irsir1\Parms]
"DisablePowerManagement"=dword:00000000
"TransceiverType"=dword:00000000
"IntIR"=dword:00000001
"Port"=dword:00000004
"CheckForHangTimeInSeconds"=dword:00000e10
"BusType"=dword:00000000
"BusNumber"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\L2TP1]
"Group"="NDIS"
"DisplayName"="L2TP NDISWAN Miniport"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\L2TP1\Parms]
"DisablePowerManagement"=dword:00000000
"BusType"=dword:00000000
"BusNumber"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\PPTP1]
"Group"="NDIS"
"DisplayName"="PPTP NDISWAN Miniport"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\PPTP1\Parms]
"DisablePowerManagement"=dword:00000000
"BusType"=dword:00000000
"BusNumber"=dword:00000000
Found these in Wiki (WM5 Peformance tweaks):
Disable menu animations
To disable menu animations (sliding in/out) and speed up performance of the UI a bit:
HKLM\SYSTEM\GWE\Menu\AniType = 0 (DWORD decimal)
To change it back to the default:
HKLM\SYSTEM\GWE\Menu\AniType = 6 (DWORD decimal)
Disable window animations
To disable window animations (minimizing/maximizing) and speed up performance of the UI a bit:
HKLM\SYSTEM\GWE\Animate = 0 (DWORD decimal)
And to switch them back on:
HKLM\SYSTEM\GWE\Animate = 1 (DWORD decimal)
Increase font cache
To increase the font cache, speeding up font rendering at the cost of a bit of memory:
HKLM\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\limit = 16384 (DWORD decimal)
To change it back to the default:
HKLM\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\limit = 8192 (DWORD decimal)
You can set the value to pretty much anything you like, but suggested values are 4096, 8192, 16384 & 32768.
Enable FileSystem cache
To enable the FileSystem cache, speeding up overall performance at the risk of the cache not being written on a sudden reset:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\EnableCache = 1 (DWORD decimal)
To disable again:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\EnableCache = 0 (DWORD decimal)
Note that by default, the cache size is zero, and you will see no effect. See "Increase FileSystem cache" below to increase the cache size.
Increase FileSystem cache
To increase the file system cache:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize = 4096 (DWORD decimal)
To return the file system cache to zero:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize = 0 (DWORD decimal)
You can set the value to pretty much anything you like.
Increase FileSystem filter cache
To enable the file system filter cache, speeding up overall performance with file mangement:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize = 4096 (DWORD decimal)
To return the file system filter cache to zero:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize = 0 (DWORD decimal)
You can set the value to pretty much anything you like.
Most of these WM5 reg tweaks work on WM6 too. They are included in tweaking programs like Schap's Advanced Config, HTweakC, or HTCustom 1.8.

nice tips....thanks
SIP
The SIP menu trick for Voice Command is worth mentioning here. Credit to whoever found it. It involved exporting the CLSID from the registry, deleting it and then re-importing it again. Speeds up opening the menu dramatically.

Active Sync issues
"8. Make sure you shutdown the 'Activesync' completely after activesyncing your device with your PC. You can use task manager (X-Button), Magic Button etc or you can use memory applet in setting > System > memory; Running Programs"
I'm having some issues with this...every few minutes, ActiveSyc is present in my running programs. I thought this is perhaps due to direct push of emails.
I have disabled directpush so that I only receive email when I manually select send/receive and have only selected a 30 min window (8am-8:30am) for it to automatically check.
Can anyone provide some feedback so that ActiveSync doesn't automatically turn on?
Thanks!
Wow thanks for the tip about the system sounds. Disabled Event Sounds > At least 50% faster response time for my QuickMenu. Sweet.

It is listed here:

Used to take several seconds to open the sip menu and now it's instant. Something to do with the system looking for CLSIDs that are set as input methods which is really slow.

Thanks a bunch, will try myself and frontpage it. Once again thanks for the tip.
Furthermore, i would like to know how to change the location of receiving file through bluetooth. The default is /My Document. I wanna change it to /Storage Card/My Documents. Pls advise.
Added some more Tweaks from the Wiki. Next update will be - links to freeware tweaking apps and formating/cleanup of existing entries.
Hell dude, I've been hacking these for ages and I have to say that your first point on the sounds is something I had no idea about - and it makes a great difference. Thanks a stack!
cool
i followed some of your advise and its really faster compared before
thanks man

To add/remove items from the SIP list
If you have a few items in your SIP list which you don't use, they can be removed from the list by setting the IsSIPInputMethod for each item you want removed. To remove the SIP from the list, replace the $SIP_CLSID$ in the example below with a CLSID from the Set default SIP tweak.:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\$SIP_CLSID$\IsSIPInputMethod\(Default) = 0 (DWORD decimal)
To add it back to the list:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\$SIP_CLSID$\IsSIPInputMethod\(Default) = 1 (DWORD decimal)
The following are some of the ClassIDs:

Thank You very much. I am a tweaking enthusiast much like you and my HTC touch is working very well.
Another tweak I found was similar to this one
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\SDCARD\ClientDrivers\Cl ass\SDMemory_Class]
"DisablePowerManagement"=dword:00000000
Instead of SDMEMORY_Class there was MMC_Class there too and it also had the disablepowermanagement option.
I've disabled that option so it does go into power management mode.

Used to take several seconds to open the sip menu and now it's instant. Something to do with the system looking for CLSIDs that are set as input methods which is really slow.

Hi, i do not understand? If i remove "HKCR\CLSID" and then add it again it's the same **** like before. Why should there be an increase in speed?

Cache optimizing improves HD

Setting the
File system cache to 8MB, the file system filter cache to 131072 sectors and the glyph cache to 64 KB improves the HD performance appreciable.
Especially for Opera, MSBrowser, videos and streaming applications like Diamond TV.
Check it!
Remark:
1. We have a lot of unexperienced users here, therefore i recommend the use of a special programm to change the cache settings urgently instead of crashing the registry manually!
Additionally to Schaps ACT 3.3, MemMaid 2.0 and SKTools could be helpful, but sure there are others still around.
2. Read the complete thread, most questions and answers are given.
3. I recommend only the settings i gave in that post. To high cache settings like the later posted 30MB are not recommended. May be they have good influence to one application, but they do destabilize the whole system.
4. Don't look for wonders. It's just to improve some applications and could not change basic problems.
And how do you do that?

Use Schap's Advanced Config - that has all the options you need. I've made the changes, but have no benchmarks to prove anything...
vincent1 is fully correct. A very visible impact i noticed is on coreplayer, some videos have become suddenly very smooth!
Hey! this is the most performing tweak I've ever tried up to now. It impacts almost everything in the smoothness of operations - I tried different values in the past but apparently you really have to push them to the maximum to see a change....
A MUST!
oh yes, it's faster !
Does these tweaks affect negative battery consumption (increased consumption)?
OMG!
VERY noticable improvement - MANY THANKS!
Can I vote that this gets added to the Wiki under "things you MUST do"?
You are welcome guys This is a community, isn't?
You should not have an increased battery drain.
What version are you running:
Advanced Configuration Tools 3.3?
Advanced Config_v2[1].0.1.0 ?
Advanced Config_v2100 ?

But you will have an increased memory leak...
Correct, ACT 3.3 isn'n allways working in some points on the HD, but the cache optimizing could be done very easy with it.
Yep increased memory leak, but very small and on the HD to neglect
Did the same using diamondtweak, huge improvement. Memorry leak is about 10 MB overnight, so not too bad if you reboot your device every day.

10MB is quite significant in an 8 hour (assuming this is sort of average sleeping time) slot.
is it really worth it?
What exactly causes the memory leak - Windows or Schapps tool?

The exagerrated growth of the caches.
How many free memory have the HD at the end of the day(with this mod)?
How can I apply these changes to the registry without using shaps tool?

Increase font cache
To increase the font cache, speeding up font rendering at the cost of a bit of memory:
HKLM\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\limit = 16384 (DWORD decimal)
To change it back to the default:
HKLM\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\limit = 8192 (DWORD decimal)
You can set the value to pretty much anything you like
Enable FileSystem cache
To enable the FileSystem cache, speeding up overall performance at the risk of the cache not being written on a sudden reset:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\EnableCache = 1 (DWORD decimal)
To disable again:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\EnableCache = 0 (DWORD decimal)
Note that by default, the cache size is zero, and you will see no effect. See "Increase FileSystem cache" to incease the cache size
Increase FileSystem cache
To increase the file system cache:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize = 4096 (DWORD decimal)
To return the file system cache to zero:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize = 0 (DWORD decimal)
You can set the value to pretty much anything you like
Increase FileSystem filter cache
To enable the file system filter cache, speeding up overall performance with file mangement:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize = 4096 (DWORD decimal)
To return the file system filter cache to zero:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize = 0 (DWORD decimal)
You can set the value to pretty much anything you like
Source and Source
Never had less than 90MB of memory left. So I do not care about 8MB over night. Better have a fast device instead jubilee about free memory I do not use anyway.
But to be honest. Not much of an accelaration with me. Already used the advised settings from schaps' tool. 2MB/4096Sectors/32kB
