I have search high and low, but have not foudn this feature anywhere.
It is so convenient to have a software that can pick up the phone, play a message, then record it.
It is faster, easier, and you can keep the recording if you want!
i used to have this feature on my old phone, now I miss it...
anyone know of a software that does this?
no.
gigabyte has it on there wm5 phones:
http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=391825
I have seen one aftermarket app that did it also but cant remember the name of it.
It would be kewl if someone had a gigabyte one and could extract it from the extended rom and post it.
since your charged minutes for calling your voicemail to listen to it, this saves you airtime if you have a low minute plan.
try this
k7.net is a free service that provides you with a seattle number that you can use to receive voicemails and faxes. i set it up to send voicemails and faxes to my mda as email. at home i setup my voip phone to copy any voicemail to my mda too. now i get everything to my wizard.
hope this helps,
sl
You'd think this would be a highly sought after feature.
The phone I had almost 3 years ago had this feature. I wonder why it is not so prevalent these days. It is so much quicker and easier than having to dial a voice mail service, or sync messages to the phone.
hmm, maybe this is somethign that should be developed?
Any takers?

Thanks for the thoughts, but I looked at the SMS answering machine before, and while it a novel program, it is really just an auto-responder, not an answering machine.
Thanks again, but I am really looking for something that actaully records voice messages.
:?
Alternative to answering Machine - CallWave
when someone leaves a message you get an email of the message that you can save. www.callwave.com
Ah, callwave is interesting, but alas, only in the US. I am in China now. Thats another reason I don't want to use voice mail. Navigating your voice mail in Chinese is sometimes very annoying.
I guess there is no real solution to this then? So sad, too bad. :?
For anyone interested, there is a method that will give you visual voicemail on any phone/pda with direct push capabilities in the USA.
1. Goto www.callwave.com and sign up for their FREE voicemail service (US ONLY)
2. If you don't have access to an exchange server already (for Direct Push mail) sign up for free access at www.mail2web.com, or any place you'd like, I use mail2web because it's free
3. Now, log into your callwave phonepage (link in on the top right on main callwave page) and goto settings. Enter your mail2web (or whatever) address as your email address. then goto (I think.. accounts) the far right tab. Disable text messaging notification (unless you want that as well) and enable email notification. Check the box to have it attach a .wav file of the message.
4. Set up activesync on your pda/phone.... goto messaging and options, select outlook e-mail. Enter the server and login information for whatever exchange server you set up.
Now, open activesync on your device and and goto menu - schedule. I prefer to have mine sync when new items arrive, that way as soon as a new message comes in you'll get it.
Ok, now you should be all set, sorry if I missed anything, post any questions and I'll try to respond quickly.
*** Reasons this is awesome ***
1. If you are transfering data when a call comes in, it will notify you of missed call/voicemail while you are still transfering.
2. Person call doesn't even have to leave a message, you can have it notify you of any missed call, so if your phone is off when you turn it on you'll see all calls, not just voicemails.
3. Callwave actually transcribes the voicemail, so in the body of the email you recieve will be an attempt at speech to text of the voicemail.
4. Voicemail messages are archives online at your Callwave PhonePage, so you can go back and search for old voicemails by typing anything from that voicemail in the search box
5. You can still call in to get messages just like standard voicemail, personal greeting and all that (just call your own # from your phone)
6. If the person calling has a blocked/private # it will still show the number in the email!
I also did a reg edit of the "friendlyname" Outlook E-mail. so my today screen says: Voicemail : 1 new msg
With this method you basically have iphone like visual voicemail, you goto your inbox and pick which ever message you want to hear, click the attachment and it opens in you media player. Or you can get an idea of what the message is about just by reading the text of the email.
Sorry if anyone of this is hard to understand, writing in a hurry because I'm at work.
Post any questions/comments.

Any programmers out there
One other thing..
Don't know if it's possible, but if there are any programmers out there that could make an application that would run on the pda that could connect to callwave and allow you to listen, delete voicemails. They have widgets/gadgets that you can add to google/yahoo/Vista that do that, is there anyway to incorporate that into a pda application??
This does not, under any circumstances, work with Sprint. Just FYI.

There is no reason in the world this will not work with sprint..it doesn't even have anything to DO with sprint....the only part you might have to do different is find out how to set "conditional call forwarding" to forward all calls when phone is busy to the new voicemail phone #. All the poster has presented is a method to have voicemails routed to email..the only difference between callwave and other services like k7.net and simulsays.com is that callwave currently is beta testing a "voice to text" transcription service and includes a "mostly readable" text version of the attached wav voicemail. When they start charging I can switch over to a free service like k7.net in about 5 minutes and the voice to text is the only part I will lose.
Yes, in theory you are correct. However, as you will clearly see on the CallWave website, they work with everyone BUT Sprint, because Sprint refuses to provision customer accounts to have this type of forwarding. And I can verify this, as I spent 1.5 hours of my time today, through 2 levels of tech support (3 different reps) all of whom ultimately came back and said "impossible".
From the CallWave Activation widget itself (from their website):
"CallWave works with most major carriers including Cingular, Verizon and TMobile. Unfortunately activation is not available for Sprint."
If someone has another method for using the service through Sprint, I would love to hear it.
Sorry about that...looked into it further and you are 100% correct. You CAN do call forwarding but it would end up costing you alot. Apparently sprint charges .10 to .20 a minute for call forwarding and gives you NO free conditional call forwarding minutes. Seems all the other providers have SOME method to do it. Bummer.
Ok..here is one post where they said they had it working and csr got it working for them again...
http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1481614&postcount=7
FYI, I had conditional call forwarding for my busy and no answer calls enabled for my sprint phone so that I could use youmail for voicemail and they also stopped working recently with no explanation.
The codes to enable them (*73 and *74) also no longer work and give an error.
I had to call Sprint and they were able to do it for me I just had to give them the number I wanted to forward to. The rep said that she didn't know about the old instructions but that she had gotten alot of calls recently of people with the same problem so she guessed that something had changed recently where you are no longer able to set this yourself. She didn't have any other information but my conditional call forwarding is working again so I'm happy.

So basically someone listens to your voicemail and then sends you the 'gist' of it? Sorry, I really don't need someone listening to my work voicemail and I don't think my patients would like that either.
Why on earth would you think they are listening to your voicemail? Have you never heard of speech recognition?
I think it might be exceedingly cost-ineffective to hire staff to transcribe a million voicemail messages. Thankfully some nice gentleman invented computers to make these tasks easier.

Exactly, it is completely computerized, the text of the voicemail is not all that accurate. If it was typed out by a person listening to your voicemail that person would have to a complete moron. That feature is useful only to give you an idea of what the voicemail is about, it's more entertaining to read them than it is useful however.
wow

You can still do it, but you would only get message notifications via email by checking your email. Direct push means that the server sends email to your phone without you needing to check it. Microsoft Exchange servers do direct push.
Callwave does offer SMS notification though, can't see why that wouldn't work.
There are some other features with Callwave, not sure how usefull they are, but they are interesting.
You can initiate a call from "in the middle" making both your cell and the destination ring, or home phone for that matter, you can also answer the call on your PC , with the paid service.
So not overly usefull but , some nice tech ...
but didnt older versions of wm5 have direct push? i recall something about that...and is htere any way to have direct push with wm6?
for some reason i could never sign up for a callwave account, i assume its cause I am in canada.
whenever i put my # in it tells me to input a valid mobile phone number

I'm all about writing a plug-in or app that will do for windows what AT&T and Aple are getting sued for on iPhone.
I'm driving myself batty trying to figure out how I can intercept the network signals from the carrier to the device which are used as a notification of new voicemail. From the patents I've read on the existing technolgy, it's possible to get everything but the message itself from the signal. I don't want to speek to soon, but there's an ID that's transmitted as part of this message it supposedly the "unique" on the message in YOUR VMail box.
If anyone has any tips on how I can intercept that message, even if you only know the protocol....that would be a huge help.
I've tried intercepting SMS already and left a VM for myself and NOTHING! I'm still playing with it though. I think that I maight have been watching for the wrong message types. I might need to trap for RAW (priority=0, for you regedit nuts out there)

should come in handy since i don't get all my calls sometimes
I gotta admit this is pretty damn cool so far..
Biggest plus is seeing missed calls when my phone is off and seeing block #'s
awesome thanks for the heads up
Haven't tried callwave yet but I've been using Simulsays visual voicemail on my 8525 for a while now.
so, i have ordered, and not yet received (get tomorrow) my nexus one. one of the things about it is that i only have the 500 minute plan (no, i didn't wanna drop 530 on a phone, lol), but coincidentally, i also like to game on the ps3 with a friend. unlike xbox, ps3 doesn't do private chat, so coordinating is actually easier with a cell phone. because i don't want to eat minutes, my intention was to actually skype him through my wifi. however, now i'm finding out, to the best of my knowledge, our option is 'skype lite', which is essentially a turd, and doesn't do anything for me except route my calls through skype on my phoneline, still using my minutes = worthless to me.
so, you guys have been fiddling with android for a while yet, i'm guessing, and i'm wondering what the best option/workaround is. i've heard mention of 'fring', but am not familiar with it. same with 'iskoot'.
gimme the digs, gents (or ladies, as the case may be). how can i voip using my phone to my buddies, without chewing phone minutes?
appreciated

You're paying for the phone regardless. Contract monthly rate is more than non contract rate.
Google Voice comes pre-installed on the N1.
If you don't have a GV account, sign-up for one. It's still by invite only so it may take awhile before you get the invite.
Then you can just go into the 'Voice' app and select to make all calls via Google Voice (which means FREE, doesn't utilize your voice minutes).
You can use fring which has skype call support
Nimbuzz and Fring work well.
Countries outside the US don't get google voice yet.

You seem to get a GV account automatically with the Nexus One but it still uses your minutes!
Google Voice is not a voice service. You'll still use cell minutes using that alone. You'll need something like Gizmo to voice call over data.
Personally, I use SIPDroid, which integrated perfectly with the N1, GV, and Gizmo. Simply install it, and set up SIPDroid with the settings here:
androidcommunity.com/forums/f4/how-to-free-calls-via-wifi-using-google-voice-and-gizmo5-21836/
Then all calls will always attempt to go through data, if it fails, it will fall back to a normal phone call. Works perfect.
sipdroid supports the industry standard for VoIP (i.e. SIP, like the former gizmo5). You can call other software SIP clients, hardware SIP phones, and SIP<->telephone network gateways.
thanks guys, i'll give this a shot.
and, i already have a GV account. and 2 more invites, lol. i'll just sit on those for a bit...
GV will definitely use minutes, which is what i wanted to avoid. i'll see how the voip options work out. much appreciated.
and, if anyone has any more help/suggestions, it'd be greatly appreciated!

darnit, gizmo5 is no longer an option. new user registration has been suspended :/
Use sipdroid to tie with GV and that should prevent the minute usage. I use sipdroid with gizmo 5 and that works but sipdroid has its shortcomings though. but it works and if you're on 3G, no one can tell the difference. Check the G1/dream forums for more info on sipdroid. There's also a thread over there about sipdroid/skype and another app for totally free minutes....

I am also using sipdroid, GV and gizmo5. I setup GV to forward to gizmo, and setup sipdroid to login to my gizmo account. All incoming calls to gizmo are free. However if you originate an outgoing call with gizmo, you will be charged the per minute rate by gizmo. To get around this, I use the GV website to originate the call, so that it calls my gizmo account first then connects the call.
Works great so far.
dang. wish that the gizmo site was still open for new members. :/
I suspect that they closed it once google bought them. They might have invites soon, because google will prolly integrate this they of hack into their google voice service. . .
Yes it was closed when Google bought Gizmo5. Are there any other alternatives?
Take a look at this article about the Nexus One subsidized vs ubsubsidized.
He mentions this:
an unsubsidized Nexus One with a data-only T-Mobile plan ($39.99/month), a Skype subscription for unlimited calls to mobile and landlines anywhere in the US and Canada ($2.95(!)/month), and a SkypeIn number ($30/year).

I wonder how he set that up? I'ld pay $3/month and $30/yr for calls.
I have been trying to configure sipgate pbxes.org Google voice and sipdroid to work but i haven't been able to do it properly if anybody could help me out i would appreciate it
Sipdroid works great on my G1 and N1. I highly recommend it. Give it a try.

[Guide] Unlimited Wifi/3G VoIP Calling
With Skype saying "no go" to Winmo7, do we know of any other solutions that might come to light with backbone VoIP services, Skype was great if anyone has used the Skype Number feature where you get a 01, 02 number on your account, meaning my 0800 number could be and was diverted to my mobile at local rates on my data plan anywhere i go.
Just thought i would throw this out there for anyone else in the same *ish* boat with VoIP not being anywhere near the App marketplace soon it seems.
Loving the new Omnia 7, Got it 2 days ago now and fitting in nicely apart from above said future issue.
Lets hope Skype see this and want to keep my subs in the new year...
I don't think Skpe have actually said no to WP7 - last I read it was just that they'd said they weren't currently working on a WP7 version (and this was back a fair few months ago, well before it was released). I've no doubt they will create a WP7 app, but without socket support they won't get far, so I would guess they'll need to work with MS on this one.
But I'm sure that VOIP will become available - things are moving more in this direction anyway - only got VOIP at home and I love it!
I'm with you on that one, I had Vonage when it first came out so free calls to every landline in the UK and around the world while people still paid BT line rental + bband + call costs to landlines.... and moaned about it like they couldn't do anything...
This is what i found on Skype that worried me and all the hype about them dropping Winmo on the net. But i hope WP7 might bring them back
*Click* What Skype Have to Say
Looks that way that they might be drawn back*i'm hoping*.... but you never know....
Sounds to me (from the above link) like they pulled the app to replace it with a new WP7 app, that's also in line with the iPhone app in terms of aesthetics and performance.
Some better answers than i was expecting tbh, I'm just hoping thats the case, Would love it too come out soon so will only have one device then
Check out Voxofon in the meantime guys

So I got a new link in my google voice this morning:
Check eligibility for Sprint integration:
Well I was excited for a second. I clicked the link and then it said:
Unfortunately, Google Voice cannot be enabled on this Sprint phone. Please contact Sprint for more details as to why this cannot be enabled.
AWWW.
So I called Sprint. Man I wish I hadn't called Sprint. The lady said that something was wonkey with my account and that the workaround was for them to port my number to Google, issue me a new Sprint number and to set up GVoice on integration that way.
Well they ported my number to "Google" but at no time asked me which account to attach it to. It is just gone as far as I'm concerned.
I've lost my number and Sprint can't find it. They say they have tride to port it back and it failed. They said they have to wait two hours to try again.
Holy WTFPONY Batman. What do I do now???
Any of you Sprint Fellers wanna chime in?
**UPDATE**
I got my number ported back in and my phone reprogrammed. The folks at Sprint don't seem to have any idea that they have an integration deal with Google. Sprint...shame on you...great idea, great feature, POOR rollout!
I'm going to have to go with the wait and see method for the time being. Thank GOD I got my numbe back.
mine is saying the same thing when i do the check eligibility.
think ill just wait instead of messing with it. i dont wanna lose the # ive had since 98
I just ported my number not problem now i can leave my phone in the car for meetings and just use my work phone with Google voice ?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
so.. all it is doing is moving your sprint number to your google voice, or making your google voice number your sprint... and then you get the google voice visual voicemail.. well.. isnt that the way already?? what are the benefits/cons?
I think the main difference is you're now able to associate your current Sprint number as your actual Google Voice number without having to actually port the number and get a new number with Sprint (and thus canceling your Sprint account in the process).
I have a Google Voice number separate from my Sprint number. I'm assuming when I get this option and choose to move my Sprint number over I'll lose my current Google Voice number.
I guess the question is what happens if I decide to leave Sprint later? Is that number associated with Sprint or with Google at the end of the day? Will I need to do a port in order to keep it associated with me? That's unclear.
i would think it would stay in google voice.. if gv had an empty button.. i would probably do it.. but im not going through 10 a time and deleting history/trash etc..
Well i hope itstays with Google voice, you still get mms on my phone but the rest it works on Google voice app for iPhone, i use it for the last 1 hour not problems. I just can make calls from Google voice iPhone app and idk about android app tho
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Same error here. I've had my GV number since launch.
Called Sprint, got escalated about seventy billion times, nobody seems to actually know what the hell "Google Voice Sprint integration" is. They either tell me that it's not their problem, contact Google; or that if the Google Voice app is installed and working, then that's it and it's "integrated" (even though it's not). They eventually told me it's "because my account is corporate" and hung up on me when I told them that is not true.
I have a discount because of my employer, but a coworker has the same thing and got his integrated earlier this week, so the corporate thing shouldn't be an issue.
VERY FRUSTRATED!
edit: To be clear, the benefit to "integration" option #2, (keeping your existing Google number), is that calls made directly over CDMA (either without the GV app, with a non-smartphone on Sprint, or when no data connection is present) display your Google Voice number as its caller ID. This enables: quicker dialing of numbers without the GV Android app intercepting and routing the call through GV; using mobile-to-mobile minutes for outgoing calls; and (presumably) SMS caller-ID spoofing, allowing us to use Handcent or any SMS app instead of the GV app for texts.
I'm getting the same error when trying to integrate. It sucks because I was looking forward to this. I really hope it isn't because I've got a discount through my employer, because my line is definitely not a corporate line
I got this message the first time I tried as well. I had it check my number again, and on the second attempt it worked. I also have a discount from my employer. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

So I had the same error, called up Sprint, and they said that it's because of my municipal discount.
"You have a type g-4 government municipal individual account, and all type g accounts are banned from the integration," were the tech's words exactly. Funny thing is, I don't have a government account, government plan, or anything. Just a 20% discount for being a part-time municipal employee.
Now to wait for the business center to open so I can yell at them... *sigh*

Calls coming into your sprint number do not go through the gv servers first so the only google service available is the voicemail. I had a few numbers saved in gv as blocked but they'd still ring through because the person was dialing my sprint number. Since I integrated, no more unwanted calls
I have yet to get this option in Google Apps GV.
I just got off the phone with Sprint (after being transferred 4 times because no one had any idea what I was talking about) and confirmed that I cannot access this feature because I have a "Public Sector Government account." Come on Sprint...I'm an individual with my own account, don't punish me because of where I work!
I wonder if you have to deactivate GV on your phone first and then try and activate with the sprint button. I am on a corporate plan as well but I haven't tried this yet for fear of losing the whole feature all together.
