AMAZING. It's incredibly simple and effective (sit's on the Today screen, a simple GPS ON or OFF get's it primed and ready almost instantly). I've been upgrading rom's and radios for the last month and the gps lock-on rate has been consistently slow and crappy. After I downloaded this (16KB!) cab file and install, I just hit ON. Tomtom worked in 5-10 seconds. Simply amazed. How come no has heard of this before, and if they have, WHY hasn't anyone mentioned it?

I could have sworn I announced this here, but maybe it was just at ppcgeeks. Anyway, I'm the creator of it... weird that I apparently forgot this site.

GC used to mention your app a while ago, i personally don't use it, but i know its been mentioned a bunch of times before.

Baf, I mentioned your app a while ago and linked your post on ppcgeeks. I stopped mentioning it due to the power bug. Is it fixed yet?

Well the thing is I've seen programs like GPS viewer and HTC home tool floating around a lot... and it's sad that no one's ever mentioned BAF gpstoggle; not nearly as often as they should. Everyone needs as many options as they can get. I used both GPS viewer and HTC home tool, and they locked very slowly. BAF locked instantly. If it has been posted before, then I'll just refresh everyones memory

Paul there was a very good reason why I stopped mentioning the app, and why I don't use it. There was a pretty significant bug in it, and unless Baf fixed it, I still wouldn't use it. Obviously no offense to Baf, it's a great application, just needs to fix that bug (if he hasn't already).
The thing is, the bug is actually a bug in the GPS drivers, and affects ANY of the solutions around. I have worked around the bug as much as I can, to the point where nothing will crash but GPS may or may not shut off. In further testing, it hasn't popped up on a lot of configurations as well.

Yeah but see...I love the app...but if it keeps the GPS on, that's a huge huge drain on battery power, which is why I stopped using it.

When I need GPS I just move it to the today screen......then I put it back away.....as you said the app is great and I would love to leave it all the time.....but the battery drain is a substantial amount quickly.....just my 2 cents...

It doesn't matter if it's on the today screen or not. If you use it, then disable it from the today screen, the bug will still keep your GPS on.
how do you shut it off?
If you do run this and it does lock gps on - what steps need to be done to turn it off? Soft Boot?

A soft reset should do the trick, so the GPS bug can be avoided by doing that. BTW I've been using the GPS for quite some time now, I didn't notice much of a power drain issue.
I still CANNOT believe how quickly I get locks; I don't even have to wait 30-60 seconds, not even 10-20. They're pretty much instant now.
Yeah but I'm all set with having to soft reset every time I use the GPS

in any other app it seems like the GPS gets shut off when the phone goes in to standby. i'm guessing thats not the case here?
My friends,
The creator of this promising app is just 18! He's a computer-science student in a first-rate (but costly) school, so if you like his program but haven't considered donating, please reconsider. He has years of college bills to pay.

Good to know.....thanks.....it seemed like it was not draining as bad as when I started doing this....
I'll give it a go. I figure I'll only use it in my car where my cell phone has a power plug and thus won't go to sleep (I changed the external power settings). Hopefully then when I exit the car I'll remember to turn off the gps.
This is working great on my VZW XV6800 almost instant gps fix compared to the others. I am watching to see what the battery drain is going to be. I have the extended battery and usually don't have to charge but about once a week so will see what the change is in the battery drain.
Updated version released today...check his site....
any release notes on it?

open the app "droidsans tweak tools" and there's a button to disable auto-rotate.
I don't see that app... What am I missing?
I know im not crazy. Just a n00b
Are you talking about auto-rotate in the browser or for the home screen?
If it's the browser, you can disable it the browser settings. If it's the home screen, you need to search the market for DroidSans Tweak tools and disable it there.
At some point, you must have un-installed DST if your home screen is auto-rotating.
I bet thats what it is. The guy I bought the phone from did a wipe, and all the apps were lost, but the firmware was still on there.
You guys kick ass. Thanks for your patience. Ive had alot of questions since just yesterday and you guys always help within 5 minutes!

Is anyone else getting error messages when waking the phone back up? I would occasionally (1 out of 20 times) get an "application 'so-and-so' has stopped responding" and tapping "wait" would continue through the error like nothing else was wrong. As soon as I shut auto-rotate off, those errors went away. It was always a different program, too.

Happens to me every now and then, not as often though, may be once out of 50 times. See what program it is, if it's one from the market then you can remove it ( I would, I don't need anything on my phone that doesn't run correctly or hogs my precious memory). If it's stock... well.. you're SOL, just wait for Android to implement some better way of managing memory.
Good luck

I've noticed on occasion I also get it with auto-rotate disabled, but not nearly as often. Maybe a couple times so far since I've gotten my replacement last week.
When it would hang, it was pretty much any random process. One time it was Alarm, other times something else, never a particular process. I think it has to do with the phone sleeping and maybe the accelerometer is oriented one way and it wakes up for an event in another position and then hangs - I don't know. It was never really a problem and I don't think the hung processes were wasting battery so I'll just reenable it.
how can I turn it off so I can save some battery...
EDIT: I got a cab file for everyone...just install, soft reset and it will be part of your comm manager

I'm sorry but don't you think that's too many clicks?
I realize that this may not be the popular thing to say around here, but I came from an iPhone 3G. Contemplated getting the 3GS but decided to give WinMo one more try and placed an order for a HD2 just now via DeviceWire.
But getting back on topic.. in the iPhone jailbroken world, there is a fantastic app called "SBSettings". It gets activated by a swipe near the top left area of the screen. From there, you could turn on/off toggles for things such as bluetooth, Edge, HSDPA, rotation, autocorrect, etc etc. People are building other toggles as addons for it all the time. But something like that should also exist for WinMo.
Now that I'm a WinMo newbie (my last windows mobile phone was a PPC-6700 and I swore never then to buy another windows mobile phone again). So there might already be another app just like the one that I'm describing. But if there isn't, it'd be great for someone to build that software. I'd certainly be willing to pay for that kind of conveniences!

Sure, if this was a setting people used one or more times a day, like turning wifi/bluetooth on/off.
How many people will ever even want to switch from the automatic default? 1% who are looking to save battery at the expense of speed? I'm sure there'll be some crazy control freak who wants minute-by-minute control of this, but who cares?
For 99% of people auto-3G degrading to 2G when 3G is unavailable is exactly what they want. For 0.99% of people they'll want to switch to pure 2G for battery purposes, it's a one-off action done on day one. It's easy enough to find in phone settings.
Who cares about that last 0.01%? If they're that bothered they can pay someone like me to knock up a switcher app.
I don't own an HD2, but I wouldn't be surprised if this could be speeded up a bit. On my Touch Pro2 the normal route would be Settings/Communications/Phone/Band (at the bottom of the screen). But the thing that gets launched when you go through that sequence is actually a programme in its own right, called CMBandSwitching.exe (resident in the Windows folder). So if you make a short-cut to that programme and put it in the Start Menu, then you can jump straight into it. Maybe there's a similar trick on the HD2?

Nice find!
Hey guys,
Just updated to the x10 after my samsung galaxy died on me, so far i am rather happy - except for the lack of root, but that will come.
I have noticed many complaints on the forum about battery life, and have experienced the same thing myself. From my experience, i think this looks like the same issue that was faced on a leak of 1.6 for the galaxy - it was referred to as the "No Sleep Bug".
TBH, the name says it all - for some reason, in many builds of android 1.6, phones were not sleeping correctly. There are many theories as to why, from cpu not being allowed to sleep, to permanent communication with google servers.
Despite all these different theories, one thing seemed to fix the problem - turning off all location services. Some people argue that a different carrier build, turning off just 'share with google' under location, turning off just AGPS etc. would fix it, but from my experience, the only real way to fix the issue was to turn off all GPS usage unless you need it. The once you have used it, reboot your phone.
This fix obviously sucks, and a new fix has recently been released by a veritable android-demigod around the Galaxy.
HERE IS A THREAD ABOUT NO SLEEP ON i7500 GALAXY;
(ok, some stupid rule says i can't post links - can a mod help me out?)
HERE IS THE FIX FOR THAT PARTICULAR BUG;
(ok, some stupid rule says i can't post links - can a mod help me out?)
LINKS ARE IN POST #5 - THANKS TO ONDOTEAM (would still be nice to get them in this original post though)
Now, from my experience, no sleep behave exactly the same way on the x10 as it does on the Galaxy;
1) I turn of all location services, and my battery life at least doubles.
2) After said turning off of services, 'spare parts' no longer says 100% running time under battery usage - in fact it can be as low as 10%.
These two factors are identical to my experience with Galaxy. SO; is there any way drakaz's fix can be applied to our X10's? It seems to me that the files he mods are standard Android system files, not sony/samsung specific.
Now i am no developer, so i dont know it this is possible - the first question that comes to mind for me is "do we need root access, or can this be done through developer tools using the android SDK?"
Can anyone help shed anymore light on this?
Seems to work for me. I disabled all location services. Spare Parts went down from 100% to 7.6%.
I'll just have to enable GPS when I need to use it..
Awesome! Glad to hear it has helped.
Let's keep testing this guys - if it does show up to be a big cause, then perhaps the devs around this place can help is figure out a patch for Drakas' mod to make it work with our x10's!

No sleep is easy to fix, took me a while to figure it...
Turn your screen brightness from manual to auto, spare parts will now start showing proper running stats, no more 100% running.
The screen is a little dark in auto but it will cure the 100% running.
GPS and location services etc make no difference to my X10i, I am running the 1.6 version unbranded UK handset, the only thing to stop mine running 100% is to put the screen on Auto.

LOL... this is already going the way of the Galaxy thread!
My phone came out of the box with auto-brightness and i never changed that option, yet i still had no sleep.
Drakaz has done some fairly deep digging and is next to certain that it is an artefact of the geolocation bug discussed in the thread in which the problem was fixed.

Me neither.. I was wondering about that myself!..
Although I'd half assumed that they were referring to the total "up-time" figure which you can see at the bottom of the "about phone"; "Status" screen.. But perhaps not.?
Spare Parts is a standalone Program ...
(i don't know for sure if it is in the market or downloadable as .apk from somewhere here in the forum ...)

Spare parts is indeed available from the market - it is a much more powerful tool for indicating battery usage than the regular android methods. The galaxy stared on 1.5 which had NO indicator of battery usage statistics at all, so we all learned about spare parts very fast.
Perhaps that is why no x10 users have realised about the potential no sleep bug; because so far only the android usage indicators have been used?...
Anyway, hopefully this can help us all understand the way our phones are working better together

14% it's mine value for running time, not 100%. By the way thats 30 minutes of 210 in total :S
I'm also experiencing "No sleep bug" after i used GPS. I use Battery Graph to plot my power consumption and after I use GPS, I can clearly see that power consumption is high even if i turn the phone in plane mode.
In addition SE widget, used to turn on/off GPS, seems to not work very well for me. So, to fix the bug, i manually disable GPS in parameter menu and restart my phone. After that power consumption is hardly null (20% in 8h with MP3 on almost all the time).

My phone has no trouble sleeping.
Gps hasn't really been an issue but I keep it off when not needed.
Here's my solid settings:

3) Gps off
4) Restart after using wireless
As long as it's like this my phone lasts 2 days easily

I have been playing with mine for a month to work out what caused mine to not go into sleep, I keep GPS wifi etc on 24/7 but in spare parts I was running 100%, after numerous reinstalls and removing everything i chanced on turning on auto screen brightness, now when i unplug my x10 the running sits at the correct level.
No Geolocation bug here
I have this problem with 100% on and off. Sometimes when I check its under control (~10%), other times its at 100%. I have GPS off, no WiFi, auto brightness... don't know why it sometimes just gets stuck at 100% :/

NEW FIX OUT!!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782242
Like many of you folks, i've been having lots problems with the GPS. And like many of you, I also am upgrading from the G1 so I know how a good GPS signal is suppose to be like. In many instances, the GS would not sync with the GPS when under the same circumstances, the G1 had no problem.
Inside my home it will rarely connect. When testing with the GPS TEST, the damn thing would not even connect to a satellite.
AFTER FIX - Everything connects REALLY REALLY FAST and ACCURATE
PS - These are not my own but I found them online by username e-wrecked
STEPS
1 - Disable "Use Wireless Networks" - Settings / Location & Security
2 - Dial *#*#1472365#*#*
3 - Under "Application settings" Change "Operation Mode" to MS Based
4 - Under "SUPL/CP Settings" Change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 [ Do not use www. in front of supl]
5 - REBOOT
6 - Turn back on the "User Wireless Networks"

edit: Sweet, Got a lock in like 1 min. outside around a bunch of buildings on a really cloudy day.... Not sure if this fixes it completely but It works great for me so far. Ill do more testing obviously but nice job op...
Xda rocks. People all help.. Loving it
edit2: Ok I shut gps and my location off. Then turned on my location. Went to google maps typed in tmobile, then went navigate too, it opened up my gps panel, I turned gps on, hit back to go back to the navigation, it now locks in about 5 seconds on a major cloudy day around buildings got a lock, last night I couldnt get one in minuetes.. Very awesome... Great job again op
I was starting to have buyer's remorse because I use my phone for navigation daily. About 30 min ago my internal dialouge was: "Sh!t, I sold my iphone for this and the gps barely works!"
I decided to check if xda-dev had a fix posted and hot damn there it was my gps works awesome! Albeit I was very sceptical and I bit a couple of nails since the first fix was slow (maybe cold with new settings), but every subsequent fix has been lightning quick!
Thank-you very much for posting the fix!
By the way the Vibrant is miles ahead better than the iphone. If this problem occurred on the iphone I would have waited 3 weeks before Apple would stop denying there was a problem and then tell me to buy and external gps for it to work properly - just poking fun at apple.

+1 How true.
This fix is exactly what was needed. Thanks to the OP.
Since applying the fix, my phone is taking noticeably longer to boot to a useable state. Previously, the phone would boot into the OS and be snappy within seconds. Now, it's taking me ~1min for it to scan the SD card, and is extremely 'choppy' (low FPS) until this is complete. If I happen to accidentally bring up the keyboard during that 'choppy' period, it will remain on the screen until I do a hard reboot.
Anybody else experiencing something weird like that?
Good so far i even got locked on in the house in a room with no windows in like 5 seconds. First boot up after entering fix was real slow and had some quirks but now running normal. anybody else?

Hai,
Since nobody bothered to answer my call to track down what drains the battery I decided to just post my findings and you do with it whatever you like...
In recent couple of months I've been experiencing quite nice battery life, almost a week on standby, which is basically on par with original LG ROM. The trick is simple:
It's happening as long as the Gallery app is NOT running.
I don't know what this piece of software does but when it's loaded to memory it stays in there and ignores attempts to terminate it, doesn't sleep when phone wants to and eats battery in a matter of single day. Unfortunately it seems some other apps use it directly or indirectly, like when Wi-Fi starts and/or by Market for example. Thus my solution is just to force close the Gallery after I finish activities which seem to require it.
I don't know whether root of the problem is with the app itself (like, CM modifications made so it's more cool, at the price) or it's just something else unearthed by certain SwiftDroid's configuration. To anyone who wishes to furher investigate my sincerest good luck. And I'd be grateful if results were published too.

Hai,
Since nobody bothered to answer my call to track down what drains the battery I decided to just post my findings and you do with it whatever you like...
Are you joking? Should i use my phone as a doorstop,or what else?
EDIT: And,an old trick: when an app stays opened,to prevent it to reload again you have to delete his user data (works with Maps and Gmail too)

You do with your phone what it damned pleases you. In case you haven't noticed the battery life is most often reported as either standby time or call time. In my typical usage battery lasts no less than two or three days but what 'typical usage' means may mean totally different things to me and to you.

Hm, even more shotgun approach to what I described. Having user data could be the primary reason for keeping the app installed. But thanks for tip anyway, may come handy one day.
There is gr8 app on xda, better batery state. With this app you can see what aplication keep wake lock, use cpu, gps, etc...
