Can't hold GPRS connection. - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 ROM Development

Hi guys.
my issue is easy to understand.
My BA can't hold one GPRS connection without dropping it.
Tried several ROM's, as even connected to the charger do the same. It have the same issue with other service providers sim cards.
Strangely, this started to happen once i didn't used it for more than 1month. (work vacations)
Any idea about what is affecting my BA?
I need his GPRS capabilities fully working without dropping, because it is one work tool.

still waiting for one suggestion that doesn't mean "trow it away from the window"

GPRS drops on SX66 if:
1. Battery voltage is low
2. Signal strength is low

even connected to the charger it drops.
even fully chatged, it drops
the signal in my house is strong, and in the past never dropped, even in low coverage areas with only 2 bars, or even 1.
tnx
maybe my battery is deffective? the old one is, but this one i am using, have barelly a year of usage. :-\

well folks, problem solved.
How i did it?
Simple. Downgraded my Radio stack to 1.13.00
and now works.
isn't it weird? I even reloaded the 1.15.00 and keep on failing, today tried this 1.13.00 and now, my problem is gone. well, glad to have it back on the road.

Poor WiFi! Please help!!!

Hello.
I have recently bought for second time a Qtek 9100 and i have noticed that it has a really poor reception, regarding wifi signal.
More specifically, if i move to next room( few meters away) i loose half strength of signal, and if i move another room (less than 10 meters from my pc) i barely have signal (around 20%)!!!
With a Qtek 9000 i had before, in the same room i had around 90% wifi signal and with my laptop the same!
I have to notice that i selected "best performance" in wifi settings( but the strange thing is whether i have it in best performance or best battery life i can't see any difference).
Is this a hardware failure? If so, i should move quickly to get an exchange device before the replacement period ends.
Thanks in advance for your help!
same problem, tried the wifi g hack, no results. I suggest you try that [wifi g hack] any help from anyone else would be good though
Yes, i have tried that, but no luck.
No change with that!
Is the poor signal normal? Any other 9100/Kjam user to share his feedback?
Please tell your experience as to know if my device is defective, in order to move quickly tomorrow to exchange it.
Thanks!
well i dont know, i get normal signal at home or on anyother open home wifi network, but at school which has wpa-tsk settings, i can only access the wifi when im across the hall. they have another router in the other building, but i can be 5ft away from it and get nothing
Hmmm, i have problems whenever i try to connect to router, usb wifi key, public access point, anything. Just 10 meters away and signal goes close to nothing. So, i am convinced that it is a defective unit.
If anyone else can tell us their experience...
Ok,thank you for your help!
Ur lucky you can connect at all.
I can't even connect to my home wifi set up!
Well I can if I plug the Wizard into my laptop via USB!
Have you guys tried running this CAB? I think it does more than change one registry setting. I have a QTEK 9100 and it worked well for me. No issues with distance or performance (at least not yet). Using a Belkin Pre-N router. Make sure to soft reset after running the CAB on the device. Hope it works for you.
Did nothing for me,
Still can't connect to my home WiFi
yea i have this installed now for about 2 weeks.no additional results
Yes, i have installed it too, no luck with it...
Hmmm, things get complicated.
I tested an 9100 and a Qtek S200 in a shop (demo phones) and i have seen that their wifi is close to my 9100 as far as it concerns the signal.
So, if this is the normal, this sucks!!!
Since 3 days that i have started investigating the case, i have compared my 9100 with a Dell Axim X51v, a Palm Lifedrive and a Qtek 9000, all in the same place.
The results:
Palm lifedrive: 90% signal
Qtek 9000: 80% signal
Dell Axim 51v: 50% signal
Qtek 9100(mine): 25% signal
What the heck!!!
I start to believe that 9100/S200 have a very bad wifi module, regarding it's signal ability!
Any other feedback?
Noone uses his wifi?
Thanks!
I can only tell you that I have the same. the WIFI modukes are not the best you can get.
I can use it but it looses the signal quite often by just moving the phone. :?
Yes, i believe that all new Qtek's-after the tests i've done- have bad wifi modules( except maybe for Qtek 9000, all the others are crap)!

Poor(?) WLAN Reception

Is it normal that about 15-20m from my home WLAN access point, TyTN loses the signal. Even within 4m from the WLAN station, the signal bar won't go to the highest level?
Is this normal behaviour?
I have used laptops with internal WLAN cards that can reach the access point from about 50m away without any problems and signal level at good.
same happens to me, my dell laptop works just fine but my tytn looses signal 8-10 meters from wifi spot...
Change the power save mode to best performance, to see if it helps:
start - settings - connections - wireless lan - power mode
Although it doesn't sound like the case, it is possible for the radio receiver to be overloaded if the signal is too strong as would be the case with it right next to the AP.
Bit like trying to listen to music standing next to a speaker chucking out 10kW
David.
Yup, have tried that power save/performance thingie. Wasn't much difference wether the powersave or performance was at it's highest setting.
Hi, Which is your serial number...starts with HT6??? ?
Bye.
Yeah i can agree my wifi signal is poor on my MDA Vario II, worse than my Vario, and far below my laptop,
it sucks as i live just near a star bucks and have a 1 year t-ob hotspot subscription.
not sure if its the same problem but my vario2 constantly drops its wifi connection and starts searching for others regardless of signal strength. When i called T-mobile they confirmed it ws a hardware fault and are sending me a new replacement.

poor WLAN reception was quite an issue in HTC Wizard and unfortunately problem remains with HTC Hermes/TyTN as well. big shame imho, however since i have web'n'walk deal, i don't use WLAN in my Vario II at all.

I have the same problem described above. Very weak signals and constantly dropping connection / looking for other signals. I have an M3100. Is it a ROM or hardware fault?
Same problem here.
2 laptops work fine, as did my HTC Prophet (Orange M600).
I returned the M600 and went for the M3100 instead. Little did I know the M3100 would have problems picking up the wifi signal from my router where the M600 had NO problems at all.
I've been considering replacing the wirless router for one with a bigger range, or installing a signal booster of some sort.
I thought maybe I have a duff phone, but looks like it's the norm.
So far at least my replacement Vario2 isnt displaying the previous wi-fi sigal dropping problem so maybe the problem was ironed out on the newer models - my old serial number was HTC623 and the replacement is HTC624
same here - very weak wifi on serial - HT634xxx
Yes i need to also confirm that my unit is suffering from very weak wifi signal.
Right now im siting by my 838 Pro and my notebook, my notebook has "full signal (5 bars)" but my 838 pro has "very weak signal (1 bar)"
my unit has serial number of HT634xxxxxx
bought in bangkok 4 days ago.
Thanks for any inputs
Cheers
NR
Just got my phone this week, serial number is HT635, WiFi performance is crap.
I've only managed to have it work once so far for about 20 minutes, even if I stand next to my router.
Doesn't work at work either.

Are your sure they said it was a hardware failure??
I have the same problem. Sitting about 5 ft. from my wireless router the Tytn drops the connection, displays 2 wireless icons in the topbar and wants to connect the the wireless router of somebody else. I have to delete the wireless settings and re-enter them in order to get WiFi working again. The signal is also very weak and after 10 meters the connection is gone. HT633.
Pardon my ignorance, never tried wi-fi, but anyway... Couldn't be a reason that AFAIK 'g' mode is turned off by default? I thought I saw it in the one of the tweaking utinily...
What ??? The Wi-Fi in TyTn is that very bad ???
I hate to say that I just ordered that phone with T-Mobile NL ! And I ditched my Magician. The reason was that I want that Wi-Fi !!
Poor me

I think your point is accurate there Lurker. I've done some hunting around to find a Registry hack to enable Wifi G which I found here.
I'm happy to report that it actually made quite a difference. Previously the signal would cut out constantly in my living room and was generally useless. After applying the Wifi G hack, I get a medium to low signal in my living room, which is stable. I've tested the bandwidth and it is exactly the same as my PC gets. The Vario II Wifi reception still isn't exactly great, but it works in the rooms I need it to, so that's good enough for me.
Here is the hack (amended for Vario II):
1) Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS
2) Add new DWORD Value:
name: dot11SupportedRateMaskG
D value: 8
guys, this hack is for the Wizard only and does nothing on the Hermes... the Hermes comes with 802.11g wifi enabled by default.

1.20 Radio Rom takes long time to reregister on network after dropped off?

Hi all,
I'm currently experiencing a problem where my Softbank X01ht drops off the cellular network because I live in a low strength area, and takes forever, if at all, to automatically connect back to the network, even if I move into an area where I know the cellular strength is high.
If I manually turn off the phone portion of the hermes, and reconnect, then it happily detects the cellular network and connects. In other words, after disconnecting, it acts as though there is no network in range at all, even though I know there is.
This seems to have started after I upgraded my radio rom to version 1.20 from 1.07. Prior to the upgrade, I know it connected back to the network quite quickly after it dropped out. Has anyone else experienced this with the 1.20 Radio Rom? I currently have the Imate jasjam rom installed on my phone with the 1.04 bootloader.
Unsure if this is related, but the area that I live in has a weak UMTS network, but a relatively decent GPRS network. I'm thinking the phone is getting confused over which network to connect too.
It also seems that if I'm in an area with a pretty strong cellular strength, it doesn't drop out? Would I benefit from downgrading to the 1.16 Radio Rom?
Thanks in advance all.
Gene
I can also confirm that things added with that after a soft reset sometime it cant detect network..i have to manualy turn off/on the radio part....generelly it occures if i reset the set just after making a call or just getting disconnected from edge...
the previous 2 radio that i used 1.16 and 1.08 didnt suffer from those probs...
but the main benifit of 1.20 radio that i get is EDGE speed i can pump upto 220Kb (22-24 KB) download speed in flat when connected to pc as wireless modem but with the previous radios i can barely go 160Kb and the speed did uped/down regularly...
and somewhat strange with this 1.20 radio i cant search for network list manually when even i go to manual in network after sometime i get cant read error...but previous radios where ok in that par too...
and the last benifeat that i get with 1.20 is now the SIM STK menu is working.....

Thanks sajib,
Glad I'm not the only one experiencing it. For me, however, it only occurs when it looses connection to the cellular network. After every soft reset so far, it has connected to the cellular network automatically. To me it doesn't seem to even search for the network. That is, after loosing connection, it is resigned to the fact that it can't connect to a network, so doesn't even try, unless I force it too. I think I have seen it connect automatically once or twice, but either way, it takes at least 10-20 minutes, sometimes it never connects, and I force a manual reconnect by turning off the phone and turning it back on. So is this a known problem with the 1.20 Radio Rom?
Try this...
I had the same problem on my TyTn. Took forever to WiFi connect. Then I found this registry setting:
[HKLM\Comm\TIACXWLN1\Params]
"dot11ShortPreambleInvoked"=dword:00000001
Now my WiFi time-to-connect seems much faster.

Hi!
Thanks for the advice, but mine isn't a Wifi problem, but a problem with connecting to the cellular network.
Or do you think that your connecting to the WiFi network and the cellular network are one in the same?
i am using the 1.20 radio as well, but cant say that i have had any of the said problems... i have the cingular 8525 and have used the 2 latest cingular roms, the aku2.3 and 2.6.. but i did have some of the same problems with i used cingulars 1.16 radio

Do you commonly get cellular network disconnects? I find that if I'm moving around the city or driving around in the car, the network connection is maintained, and sometimes will automatically find the network if it does get disconnected. However, it is only when I am home that the phone disconnects and doesn't try to reconnect once it has been disconnected.
Any idea of what might have caused this issue with you with the 1.16 Radio Rom? Possibly something to do with the AKU version? I'm using AKU 2.3.
Thanks,
Gene

I too have the original problem but have not upgraded the radio ROM. I have the T-Mobile Vario II (sorry not sure what ROM that is) but often when I move from an area of either very weak or no signal to an area with a signal (coming out of a shielded building) I too get the same problem. Initially the phone shows weak (or even strong) signal strength but when I try to make a call I get the box up on the phone screen telling me it cannot connect. I have found that eventually it will, when left to it's own devices, get itself sorted out and allow a connection. But it is invariably quicker turing off the phone (via comm manager) then back on - this always results in a valid connection.
Perhaps the problem that you describe is not related just to the 1.20 Radio ROM upgrade?

Hi Tony,
It could possibly be an application or the ROM itself causing the problem, however, I think its the radio rom in my case, simply because this problem only started occuring after I upgraded to the 1.20 Radio Rom. Previously on the 1.07 Radio rom, the phone would connect automatically and immediately. Also I just performed a hard reset after I discovered this problem, and it still seems to be occurring...
I also am sure that after a long while the phone reconnects, I have seen it try reconnect a couple of times. But then again, a couple of times I've left it for 10-30 minutes, and it hasn't reconnected. Unsure of exactly how it chooses to reconnect and when it tries to reconnect. You would think it would try reconnect constantly after a specified period, but in my case it seems very random.

i actually get pretty solid coverage whether moving or stationary. especially at home since i live not a quarter mile from a cingular tower and i dont think its necessarily related to the aku version since i have gotten the same result with either 2.3 or 2.6. But i can say for sure that the cingular 1.16 radio is junk my biggest complaint was gsm calls cutting out and on my calls on 3G had a very weird digitized background noise, kinda sounded like a bad digital echo... 1.20 fixed all of that for me

When I'm roaming around my connection always seems to be sustained. e.g, I've been checking my phone ever 1hour for about 24 hours, and have yet to see my signal lost. Is it possible that the phone is getting confused over which band to connect to? As I said in my first post, I have a relatively weak 3G/UMTS signal from my home (1-2 bars), and a relatively strong GPRS signal (3-4 bars). Presumably the phone is UMTS-preferred, and uses GPRS as a secondary.
I saying this, even if I go to another area which usually has 5 bars UMTS signal, I haven't seen the phone immediately connect. This was after about 10-15minutes waiting in that area.

yes, the phone is set to prefer the UMTS bands.. have you tried setting the band manually instead of it letting it autosearch? you can do it in the phone settings menu or use the app listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286844

Vario II network coverage question

Recently my Vario II intermittenly loses network signals, it says No Network and I have to toggle phone off/on to make it search for signal again. This only happens when I'm at home (Charlton SE7 area).
Rom 1.21.110.3 (19/06/06)
Radio 1.05.05.00
Does anyone have the same problem?

Flash HardSPL first, then upgrade your radio.
Ive linked to my guides incase your unfamiliar with the process.
The newer radio should possibly increase your GSM efficiency. Are you in a decent area for reception?

Hi, many thanks for your detailed guides. I've upgraded Radio to 1.38.00.10 but the problem still persists. I'm in a very good coverage area, always get full bars 3G when it works. Soft-reset my phone and now it's searching in vain for network signal, I'm confused
What operator are you with ? Maybe the cell where you live is getting overloaded. We had a problem similiar to this last month when our local base station had a problem. Our work-around was to disable 3G but not using a Hermes . Apparently the handset tries to register using the 'best' data-bearer its configured for. So disabling 3G made it register with GPRS which worked fine. They then fixed the base station and we were able to re-enable 3G. I would
guess Charlton would have a lot of subscribers per cell. You would expect the coverage to be better in a built-up areas but who knows. Maybe an enquiry/ complaint to the operator would at least tell you if they know of a problem and if its temporary or longer term
Cheers for that. I'm with T-Mobile. What's bugging me is that this signal disappearance only happens sometimes. It's not that I don't have 3G (or signal for that matter) at all, I still get full 3G signals fine most of the time. But you probably were right, looks like it's a fault from the operator's cell in the area, I will give them a call next week to see if there's an explanation.
I've noticed this problem when I'm in the south London area (very general I know). People have got around the issue temporarily by forcing the phone to GPRS only
More problems! After upgrading to 1.38 and trying all sort of "good" radios like 1.17, 1.27, 1.34 I can't make/receive calls unless GSM is forced. There must be something wrong within my immediate area because with the same radios everything works flawless just 10 mins down the road. I just called TMob and there's no technical fault or anything from their side. I will just have to put up without 3G until the problem fixes itself
There are lots of people complaining about 3g on T mobile in UK. They seem to have serious issues with Hermes devices and the dropdown to GSM.
I had a problem six months ago with my hermes on orange at home in SW London. For a few weeks it was mucking about - I rang O who advised me that they were experiencing some local issues but would fix them within days. I switched to GSM for a few days. When I switched back its worked fine for last five months.
3G gone mad!
the same thing was happening to me. Full 3G reception in Leicester, tried to connect to get my e-mails and then the signal totally goes. The same thing happens when I make calls as well. Switched to GSM and everything worked. Now in York and everything is working on 3G.
Network is T-Mobile.
This sounds similar to the issues I am having.
Do you get the phone hanging as it attempts to start a call and then after a while a message stating that it was unable to connect?....sometimes resulting in a soft reset to bring the device back online? In my case toggling bluetooth will reset the connection.
I am with T-Mobile in Glasgow but get the same issues during the day in Edinburgh
No 3G

No mine doesn't say anything, it sounds "ding ding" after a few secs like when you press the hang up button. I can use the Internet but anything to do with calls is just impossible. I've switch to GSM now and everything's back to normal. A bit annoying can't use 3G at home.

frustrated with hd2 losing signal

I have trying to use the HD2 over the last 3 days and getting real problems with intermittent signal loss.
I know i have low signal from the mobile operator in some parts of my home but that has never been a problem with other HTC phones i used before. If the signal was too weak it would just drop out but come back if i moved a bit.
With the HD2 once the signal indicator turns red it stays that way even if i move to a strong signal area.
The weird thing is sometimes i would leave the phone sitting in one place with four bars and then minutes later it would show up with no signal and i can't receive calls.
Even stranger is that in all these cases where there is no apparent signal, all i need to do is press the send button to try making a call and the signal "magically" re-appears and all is fine. I've tried at least four differnt radios as well as the energy ROM ... no change.
Any ideas ? this is reaallly frustrating!!!!!!
do the problems resemble what I experienced here?:

change radio ROM, well experiment with several of them by trial and error (read the sticky/tutorial first).
OR
buy an indoor signal booster.
Well, regardless of the radio version ive had really odd intermitant service.
the best way ive found to help this is turn off 3G / HSDPA
Doing this forces the device to remain on GPRS, it means the battery lasts a hell of a lot longer and it doent drop the connection every time the device feels like trying to connect with HSDPA or drops it for no apparent reason.

as i said, stop 3G from working, when switching between the two due to what ever reason the HD2 decides to drop it will kill your connection, voice and all until it switches back. there is an issue with 3G and im wondering if its everyone or just folk using TMOUS radio and thus recieving the extra RAM
To disable 3G/HSDPA to test,
Open Comm Manager and click on Phone (not the on/off switch) to go to phone options. Scroll to bottom and select BAND. Switch network type from Auto to GSM.
3G/HSDPA is only needed for internet surfing. Time, weather, stock updates and email downloads don't really benefit from it. So turning it off this way will make these type data connections go through the EDGE network which is plenty fast enough for it. When you need to surf the net, go back and switch it to Auto and you will get 3G or faster speeds for that.

hello im having the same problem..no voice or data i push my send button an then i get signal,my wife has a hd7 and my son has a hd2 they will have 3 to 4 bars and i show no signal.push talk and i get 1 to 2 bars.
have you found a fix?
You could always try a signal booster on eBay for like 5...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
If its just 3G then its probable just T-Mobile or then again a Hardware/Firmware issue
try a different ROM, Radio
I have this same issue I running a T-Mobile USA (using radio 2.12 but then again it was doing it on 2.15 as well) and it just drops all connectivity and says no service I have to search the network again.
My phone is unlocked I don't know if that might have anything to do with it as well
I've had this problem on my HD2 since i got it.
Edge (E), works but slow as all get out. 2-4s ping times or time outs. 3G (and when i say 3G i mean when it says 3G in the status bar) doesn't work at all. HSDPA (H) works great, WHEN it stays that way, which it doesn't.
It can switch between 3G to H every 10 seconds.
And i'm using it for tethering primarily, which makes working painful. Lose your VPN and SSH sessions constantly. Some days it's ok. But most, horrible. btw, i'm in the Denver area.
I've tried stock roms and custom roms (primarily Energy). All radios. Nothing fixes it!
This is the only thing I don't like about my HD2 and/or t-mobile. And it's a whopper. I'm almost ready to get another phone or carrier, depending on what's causing this.

I have 4 HD2's with one having the problem you describe and have come to the conclusion it's a hardware issue. Probably a cold solder joint on the antenna lead.
In WinMo or Android the signal bars jump all over the place but the signal level in 'about phone' shows a constant signal even though the bars show nothing. I don't drop to many calls but miss more than a few incoming. I travel for 5-8 hrs in the same area everyday and very familiar of good and bad areas of reception. I have tried stock/cooked ROM's/Radio's with no noticeable difference.
I'll probably send mine in to HTC to be looked at.
