DIY scratch protection

I noticed the first scratch on the corner of my Jam today. Since electronics always take the most abuse on the corners, I devised a quick and easy way to protect the corners of my Jam while I'm in Europe for the next 3 weeks. Take electrical tape or clear satin tape and place a piece over the corners. Works best if you cut a slit in the tape so you can fold it around the corner without wrinkles. In all probability the device will land on its corners if dropped or take the most abuse on the corners if scraped against something. Thus, problem solved; I did it to my digital camera too. It doesn't look half bad on either device, and if you can't stand the black corners, just use clear tape. Any tape works as long as the adhesive won't stick to the advice after you remove the tape.

I'm sorry, but that has to be the stupidest looking thing I've seen in a long time. Why don't you just get a silicon case for about $10 off of EBAY? I mean, if you REALLY need electrical tape and that's all you can find...great. But just get a cheap latex or silicon case such as the ones from JavoEdge.com.
Do you put electrical tape on the front and rear bumper of your car too?

I don't get it! People seem to get very upset when they discover they scratched the ball mirror on the back of their JAM. Now we have a JAM covered in electrical tape. Should we all carry our devices in the original box? Or better yet never use them to keep them in pristine condition? I am not saying I didn't get a little ticked off when I found a nice big scratch in the corner after a small drop but come on! I think we're all getting a bit too precious. Anyway, to each their own.
Of far more concern is the gunk that gets on the screen from my face every time I hold the JAM to my head! I mean yuck! What the heck is up with that? Is there that much oil on my face??? I just washed it! I gave my phone to my friend the other day to make a call and his face left some sort of super oil on the screen that wouldn't scrub off for several minutes! Its gross and embarassing! I think we need some sort of face oil protector!

Does anybody have any idea for cheap screen protection? I think the prices are outrageous for the slices of film sold as protectors.

I use the cheapest of them all...
They are made for Palm devices and are sold on flea markets or "One Dollar" stores... :lol:

scratch? i've droped my mini 2 times and got 3 dent edges. damn sad. The stupid casing they gave me is getting pretty loose. I put it on my belt.... so everytime i knock it seems that pouch just flings out. The screw and the plastic seems to have worn off.
I think i'm gonna go to a skinning shop to hide the dent edges.

try to buy a leather case for Nokia 7610. it fits.
You dont use that in the box lether case. It will easily fall of that tiny hook.
Wit the lether case of Nokia, it is mounted sideway into the belt by a leather that is sewed.
mine has never fallen. Even if it falls off the belt when you undress, the leather case is so stiff that it will not dent the mini.

Dropped mine on a concrete floor from about 1.5 meters and got a really ugly dent on one of the corners of the battery cover. The cover wouldn't even go back on!
Easy fixed though. Just took a plastic pen and pushed the dent out from the inside. It still shows a slight dent and small scratches if you look closely, but what the heck...

Anyone know of any metallic paint (model, SKU, UPC code) that I could use on my JAM? I rarely put on my seatbelt, and the one time that I decide to play safe, I scratch up the corner of my JAM. I'd never go "ghetto" as one person put it in the thread, but I'm sure there's something out there to match it up. Any ideas?

Get the jam off of your belt and put it in a proper car holder and you will not only protect it from getting scratches from your seatbelt, you will also get it charged while driving. And also one less reason not to wear a seatbelt that could save your life in the case of an accident.

Incidentally, can anyone recommend a decent car kit for the JAM? I want one I can mount with some amount of ease somewhere on the console... I don't like those ones that stick on the windscreen.

let's admit it: it's not very comfortable in the pocket. i was wondering how are you carring it? in the pocket? with a clip-on case attached to your belt (pls share which case)? in your briefcase?
i'm still looking for the most comfortable way...

I can not carry it any place but in the trouser pocket. I have broken many belt cases or holsters.
Gramicci, a company that makes clothing for rock climbing made a pair of trousers with a pocket sewn on the right thigh for carrying GPS or cell phone and it fits the Wizard nicely. I do not know if they still make these trousers but they are my favorite....

I'm just using the clip-on case that came with my T-Mobile (US) MDA. Its plain, but does the job.

The latter is most likely what I'll get, as it looks like its fast to pull out, and provides adequate production, but I like the durability of the metal case.

I switch back and forth between the default Cingular 8125 belt-clip case and a PDair Aluminum case. When I use the aluminum, I carry it in my pocket. It's quite a brick with the case.

Honestly, both cases have their virtues. The aluminum case undeniably provides better protection. However, it also severely degrades signal quality. In order to have a conversation, I have to actually remove the the phone from the aluminum case or else the call quality is abysmal. The aluminum case also ruins the EDGE/GPRS connection. All of that said, sometimes I prefer the aluminum when I want to be sure that the phone is safe.
The belt-clip case keeps the wizard out of my pocket, but keeps me more protective of the phone while it's on my belt.

I use the case that came with my 8125. It works great, I have not had any problems with it.

Just in the pocket of my trousers. I'm not fat, so it's fit just right.
Should not be a millimiter thicker, then I got a problem.
Only problem is to get it, sometimes it's not so easy and sometimes I hit the Red (end call) button when I reach for it

Fits in my pants pocket just fine, even with the BIG extended battery. I just make sure the display is in (against my leg) which is a good idea anyway.

I also carry it in my pocket. It's not as big as I thought it would be. It's certainly bigger than a regular phone, but for a PDA phone it's not too bad. I also always make sure the screen is facing my leg, just in case something hits my leg, at least it hits the back and not the screen.

I carry it in the front left pocket of whatever pants I happen to be wearing (be it jeans at home, or khakis/dress pants at work), usually in its PDAir aluminum case. I have the same signal quality issue as everybody else, but as I barely ever talk on the phone I can keep it in the case all day long.
The only issue I have is when I'm wearing dress pants, as they're of thinner and tighter material. I've been carrying the phone w/out a case as of late (I have a screen protector on it and the housing is already beat up, so I'm not too worried), but I just ordered a leather belt clip on eBay today for when I'm at work. I'm not too worried about looking like an idiot, as pretty much anyone working here (I work for IBM) has their cell on a belt clip.

When I'm at work, I use the beltclip and wear it on my belt. Other places, I throw it in my purse -- with the case MINUS the belt clip. Since I have individual ringtones assigned to certain contacts, I don't need to flip it open to see who's calling. I can just hit the answer button and start talking.

i want a case that provide full protection not just the screen and not the buttons as well i prefer it to allow the keyboard access while in case

Yup, watch out all you pants pocket carriers. Not exactly sure how it happened. It was only in there for a few mintues (pants pocket in my jeans) and when I pulled it out it was shattered.

And thanks for the tip on the Aluminum cases. I'm not pleased with the signal strength on my 8125 as is so the AL case won't help.
And hello to all, I'm totally new to these devices but I like my 8125 so far.

Trouser pocket usually when I'm wearing shorts (bigger pockets, not in the aluminum case). When I'm wearing jeans, it's almost always in its aluminum case hanging from my pocket if I'm not wearing a belt, belt if I am wearing a belt. Sitting at my desk at work, it's usually out of the aluminum case unless I'm wandering over to the other building. Then it winds up in either my back pocket, or the aluminum case. And no, I don't forget that it's there when it is in my back pocket.

After my first 8125 went overboard, I ditched the stock case that came with it and purchased a Sedio holster. This thing is indestructable. I caught my 8125 on the boat's lifeline the other day and I damn near went overboard..... :roll:

I use a small (ripstop nylon) digital camera belt case from Tamrac that I got from Circuit City. The case that comes with it is okay for dress, but I don't like the way it leaves the corners of the devise exposed.

I bought the case from Krusell. Everything matches great, I can use all Buttons, there's a little pocket for another MiniSD-Card and the clip-system allows more ways to fix it somewhere. Usually I wear it on my belt.
But it matches only with the standard back (not with extended battery).

I am currently using the magnetic clasped case that came with the device and that has seen me to Japan and then to Scotland, so it seems to work. It has spent most of its time in my trouser pocket and occasionaly in my bag. The only problem is that it's not particulalry easy to use it from inside the case - it takes time to get it out. Also, I didnt use the belt clasp on the side of the case which generally makes the whole thing too bulky. If that was not on there it might be a worthwhile case.
I have also carried it around for short periods with no case on it (which makes it easy to get out, use and then put away), but I was worried of breaking the screen (which has a screen protector to stop me from worrying about getting it scratched).
I did order an aluminium case which was meant to arrive before my trip to Japan, but it didn't. Should finally get to pick it up in August and I am hoping it will be sufficiently small (ie, with no "useless" clasp on the back) for me to use it instead of this leather thing.
Am also planning on getting my old phone unlocked so I can use it as a temporary phone when I need to go somewhere where there is a greater risk of me damaging the phone or greater need for it to be smaller (like black tie events).

I didn't use to use anything. Just carried it in my pocket but after going from a Razr to the Vario, it was strange having something so comparatively bulky.
Since my screen broke and I had to pay to have it fixed, I've been using the magnetic case with belt clip the phone came with. A shirt of t-shirt generally falls loosely over it so it doesn't stand out much.
Would only beinterested in a different case if it were thinner than the standard case.

Pocket-friendly cases

Unlike most here, I want to be able to put my Kaiser in a case, and put in my pocket. No swiveling, no clipping, and no holstering. I know the Kaiser doesn't have the most pocket-friendly form-factor, but hell, I have to make do with what I've got.
The slimmer and lighter the case, the more pocket-friendly it is.
Any recommendations?

Be very careful of the screen in your pocket. Two of your choices will not protect the screen. Good luck.

That is exactly the way i carry mine ... With the execption of when I am at work I slip it into a leather eyeglass case I found, to keep dust and grime off it.

I've used this case for a long time (had a similar one for my Wizard) and really like it:

Only downside is the top and bottom do add thickness to the phone overall, but during the summer when I'm wearing cargo shorts, it goes into my pocket nicely. Biggest downside is the case fits tight so if you are on the phone the slightest bump will tend to hang up the call (or other buttons get pressed). So now I'm looking at a new case they offer:

This leaves the buttons exposed, gives you a cover over the screen, and then with a simple unsnap you can get to the keyboard (and it appears no plastic cover over the keys like the one I have now.

depending on the size of your pocket, the krusell orbit works quite well

Here, Here!! Another vote for the Orbit, it takes a few to get used to, but after dropping it twice, and not a dent.. i like it!

I bought one just like the new PDAir, but it was a cheap ebay case. Best $15 I've spent - has saved the phone from a number of drops, fits really well, and still fits in my pocket (it does add bulk, but an acceptable amount and I really wanted something to cover the screen).
Everything is easily accessible, and using the keyboard is a breeze.

The only drawback is if you're slipping between a car and your pocket. I've got a metal case for it in silver (It's actually the Hermes case) that i use but most the time I don't bother. It's not been too bad. But then, I am covered by Insurance

Case for fuze/touch pro for protection

I want to get a case that will protect the fuze from drops. I drop my previous phone the 8525 twice and because I'm in a city the first drop was on one of those metal grates and the phones edges got scratched up more than I would have liked and the second time was on a concrete side walk. Both times I was pulling out my phone from my case on my hip and lost grip. I was interested in getting a case that I can pull my phone from the top. That may help prevent me losing grip. But I still want to put something on the phone incase I loss grip again and drop the phone. And I was looking for something that will not put that much bulk or take away from the looks of the phone. If anyone has any suggestions or experence with cases or skins that I can put on the phone to try and protect it from a drop I would like to read about it

I had the boxwave clear case for my 8525, and it saved my phone several times. There were a couple problems though. For starters, the gaps between the plastic and the phone get covered in dirt, and you have to remove the case to clean it out. The case snaps on to your phone will little plastic tabs. If one of those breaks, part of your case will be loose.
However, I will certainly give the case full marks for protecting my phone. It survived drops, throws, smashes, and just about everything else you can imagine would happen if a 1 year old got a hold of your phone. So, if you don't really care about the phone getting dirty and whatnot, the boxwave case provides some good protection while adding a minimal amount of bulk to the phone.

I had a case similar for my HTC Tilt and I loved it, it saved my phone several times too and it has a belt clip which I loved! Also if you get that case they have it on eBay for cheaper... I believe it was $9.99 or something like that, I was looking earlier today and saw it on there but I bought a Hot Pink Rubberized one instead. But I like the cases, of course it's your own personal preference though. Hope I'm not too late with the eBay info though lol. Here's my search link, there are a couple cases for it.

Search for the body glove case. It is rubberized, not the best looking of cases, but might protect it the best. I bought mine on ebay.

I bought the official AT&T 2-piece case for $29.99 (-30% FAN discount).
It fits, but tabs that hold it on make the phone seem like it's going to get stuck in a half open position.

HTC Touch Pro Case Protection
For those of you who have a Touch Pro and have the Sprint included HTC brand case, you probably have the same gripe about it as I do. There is very little protection to the side of the phone as the OEM case has several gaps in it. Also using the case for a few weeks, the velcro begins to lose its hold and the case may not shut properly. I have customized my case to fix these problems and would encourage others to do the same. Here is what you will need:
-Small elastic material (available at any craft store or Wal-Mart!)
-3M double sided tape
-Velcro strips
-5 minute epoxy (Wal-Mart)
Directions: Cut a piece of elastic the same length as the open portion of the side of the case. Cut out small pieces of double sided tape and apply to the black cross sections of the case. Apply the elastic and cut to size. For the the velcro fix on the front of the phone, cut a strip of the velcro and fit to size on the front of the case. Mix the 5 minute epoxy and apply to the back of the velcro strip you just cut. Apply the velcro to the case and allow to dry (apply pressure to ensure a tight fit). Enjoy your case!

DIY mount

This post was inspired by thematrixkid17 from this post.
You are going to need the following items to complete this mount.
Drill
small flathead screwdriver
1/4" drill bit
dremel with sanding disc
1 1/4" hole saw
plastic epoxy
I started with a belt holster like this from ebay.

It has a cutout for the headphone jack, usb and camera.
The holster itself.
The first thing you want to do is pry out the pin holding the clip
itself. Use a small flat head screwdriver. The pin is only press fit
in so it will come out easily.
The pin
You will be left with these parts.
You can then use a 1/4" drill bit to slowly remove the plastic rivet
holding the rest of the clip.
As seen here.
Once the rivet is removed you can remove the rest of the belt clip.
You will be left with a belt holster that looks like this.
Then take out your trusty dremel and grind down the extrusions on the
back of the holster.
You will be left with a piece that looks like this.
Next you will need to move on to the windshield holder or some other
holder that you wish to use. I chose to use the garmin nuvi series.
It uses a plastic ball and socket type mount that allows you to swivel
to any angle. They make windshield, bicycle, vent, and friction
mounts. You can find them all over ebay. The seller I bought from
appears to be gone now.
The most important piece you will need first is the actual bracket
mount itself which will be permanently mounted to the belt holster you
have prepared.
The piece looks like this on the front and this on the back.
Then using that 1 1/4" hole saw without the centering drill bit you
can mount the bracket in a vice and remove the excess off of the
bracket as it won't be needed.
You will be left with two pieces that look like this.
The most important piece is going to be the socket.
Now with some plastic epoxy you will mount the socket piece to the
back of the holster.
It will come out looking like this.
Once it dries you can use whatever ball mount you have chosen.
Example with the windshield suction cup.
With the phone mounted from the front and back
As you can see, you can still use the camera for layer or any other
augmented reality.

Nice work, I've been looking all over for something like this and don't know why sprint or HTC haven't made one yet.
I have just ordered something similar to this But I don't like how bulky it is. I had ordered one that was a bike mount but the little foam thingy and one of the arms that holds the phone came off and I can't find it. So I just ordered me another one. I think however that the mounting type on the one I ordered would probably be a little better since the mounting piece if flat. All you would need to do is dremel the little 4 pegs from the mounting plate off and glue that to the back of the phone belt clip piece. I think you'd get a better job since the glue would have more of a contact patch to glue onto then with the OP's "ball joint" method.
I'll probably order me one of those belt clips and try it myself. I like the form fitting outcome of this mod as opposed to the big bulky universal phone holder that I got.

Nice work. The only reason I didn't grind more stuff is that I wanted to be sure the epoxy was going to hold. But after some use, I think that the plastic would break before the epoxy comes loose
Looks great. More than augmented reality, I think this would be cool for doing a ustream of a trip or something. I may drill out a hole in my mount to do this.

Damn, I had all those parts from my old GPS unit that quit working, but threw them out a couple weeks ago. I had one with an extended arm, but the arm broke. Damn Wal Mart brand.

Any hardware store will do. I got mine at Ace. I'm sure you can find it it at Walmart/Lowes/Home Depot though.
I used the mount today, the phone isn't going to go anywhere. The bigger problem is the anti-glare for the phone.

Very nice work. Cost wise ($$ and time) what are we talking? I'm guessing about 20 minutes worth of time, with a little extra for the epoxy to set, even if it is instant, I don't trust that.
I'm looking to unload my GPS now that I'm on the everything data and have it with my cell. Obviously I know I'm coming out ahead doing that, but just for reference when I try to justify it to the wife. LOL.

The belt holster and garmin windshield mount cost under $10 shipped off of ebay. The epoxy was about $3.50 which will go a long way if I need to use it in the future for anything else.
The tools I already had so no expense there. If you have a dremel with a cut off wheel you could get away without using a hole saw. The hole saw just makes things cleaner and faster.
I'd say it took me a total of 10 mins to do everything. Most of the time just for grinding the holster flat which really didn't take all that much time.
The epoxy takes 5 mins to set and 24 hours to be fully cure.
