i always thought that my htc hermes did not have gps and that only the successor, tytn II does (which my brother has)..but then i noticed this in a wiki..
Most recently, it was discovered that the TyTN has an onboard GPS navigation chip, but with the antenna connection shorted out and drivers omitted from the ROM, the chip is rendered useless.

No, do a quick search and you'll find the thread which discussed the development. As said in the wiki the chip is rendered useless due to the shorts on the board and no antenna.
However, with a bluetooth GPS reciever and some navigation software (I've got Tomtom 6) you too can have GPS on your Hermes.....
Cheers...

people _were_ excited about this a couple years ago, as you could have found in the Hermes wiki, the conclusion is that there's no way to enable GPS, HTC smashed the GPS chip in each Hermes unit with a hammer before they ship it out so it's not usable at all.

Hi guys!
I'm looking for a bluetooth gps receiver form my Jam with TomTom 5... any suggestion?
i just bought a holux-236 off e-bay @ £96 inc shipping. Haven't tried it out yet, but read a load of reviews prior to purchasing that sang it's praises. Apparently you can keep it in your glove box and it'll still pick up & stay fixed on sats!
i also have a Holux gpslim 236 this is a great receiver, it has a usb car charger so you can use it with the magician
GlobalSat BT-338 receiver is one of the best - Got mine on eBay for £60. Any receiver with a SiRFStar III chipset is good. Look at www.pocketgps.co.uk for reviews of receivers, there are newer SiRFstar III receivers than the BT-338 now which are more compact - that site will tell you all.
At ebay I bought a "Bluetooth Nemerix GPS Receiver, 16 Channels", wich came in a nameless package (I can't find any brand on it), and it only cost me €65 inc. shipping.
Only after 2 hours the bluetooth began to stop, and after half an hour it was completely dead. Do you might buy a good-one in stead of a cheap one
I wouldn't recommend the TomTom reciever. They make great software, but the reciever I got from them is tempremental, sometimes it establishes a fix in seconds, and sometimes it takes up to 20 mins.
hi.
i'm using RBT ROYALTEK 2001,
its working flawlessly , i'm getting fix in less then 2 seconds.
also SIRF III.

Elyl, I have the same GPS, it works great when it wants to. The problem i have with this gps is that it tends to lose its BT pairing on my MDA. Its looks ok from BT menu in win2003PE but TT5 does not see it. This means i have to delete the BT profile and recreate it Bit anoying.
Just wondered if you had the same problem or if anyone else does ?
PS/ this is my 1st post after reading the forums for a while and would like to say hi to one and all

At the moment I'm thinking to buy one of these for my Jam:
Royaltek RBT2001
Globalsat bt 338

I can't say I've encountered that problem. One thing to bear in mind, which is a fault of TT5 - when TT5 first starts up, and the BT GPS is on, TT5 will report "No GPS device present" until your GPS gets a lock. What it should really say is "No GPS signal".
As I remember, I thought it wasn't paired the first couple of times I used it, but if you actually wait a minute or so the GPS will get a fix, and TT5 will appear to "pair" with it.
So, more than likely the re-pairing you do is unnecessary, it's just that TT5 gives the wrong message when it doesn't have a signal. Another known problem with TT5 is that it will sometimes do a cold start on your GPS after a certain amount of time if it doesn't get a good enough signal... this is unnecessary also, and means it takes longer to get a fix. TT5 is far from perfect!

I use a normal Kirrio...it's all ok.
I see what your saying Elyl,
But after 30 minutes of waiting and resetting the GPS and reloading tomtom, then to delete and recreate the pair and it works within 1 minute makes me think my setup has a flaw somewhere. Will reinstall TT and the BT support.
Anyway back to the topic, the BT-338 is one of the best specced GPS receivers with SiRF 3 chipset for the price. The battery life is excellent too. Ebay is a good place to pick one up from but watch for the carriage !

Agree with this! I own BT-338 and it works very well with Magician. Recommended, very good receiver.

Never had any problem like this with my BT-338 + TT5 + Magician.
And I dont turn on the Bluetooth settings (you know, the blue icon in the bottom left corner). But the TT5 stills be able to pair it. Never lost the pairing.
Oh btw, I use ROM 1.01 The oldest one. I dont upgrade it because it works fine.

Has anyone seen or used the following gps receiver?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SOLAR-BLUETOO...818331769QQcategoryZ69928QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Read the review of that solar GPS on http://www.pocketgps.co.uk - basically, the solar bit is just a gimmick, and not very well implemented. I think the review said something like you'd need to have it in direct sunlight for about 20 hours to get 1 hour of life out of it.
I heard there was a new wizard model coming out with built in GPRS receiver, anyone know if this is true?
I'm going beat everyone to the punch and save you massive scorn....the current Wizard has GPRS already in it! GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service, and is one of the ways Wizard (and many other phones) receives data.
Might you be referring to GPS (Global Positioning System)??? Wouldn't make sense for HTC to release an upgrade to Wizard with GPS as they release brand new models all the time (every few months it seems like). More than likely there is a phone out there that resembles the Wizard with the nifty slide out keyboard that also has GPS among other improved specs. Check out the wiki for other HTC phones (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/)
Oh, you're going to PAY for denying a beating...
lol, I meant the service that allows map software like tom tom to work (I guess this must be GPS then and not GPRS!!), because with the current wizard you need an additional bluetooth receiver right?

Yes, that is correct in order to use mapping software such as TomTom you will need a bluetooth GPS reciever.

If you get a BT receiver (I isuggest the Holux GPSlim 236) you'll also need to activate the GPS panel in your wizard.

Hi all,
A few days ago I bought a P3600 for my wife. I have a TyTN and read the thread about Hermes&GPS. On the specs I saw the same processor is in the P3600 as in the TyTN, so both are GPS-able.
On a flyer, http://www.europe.htc.com/z/pdf/products/HTC_PRODUCT_BROCHURE_V2_111006.pdf, I saw GPS will be enabled on the P3600 later.
So I took the Hermes-cab to enable GPS on the Hermes.
Now I have GPS working on the Trinity P3600. I know it is working, because VisualGPDce shows methe signals. I aso got a fix. Only TomTom does not see the GPS-signal.
What do I have to do to enable the signal with TomTom?

Ok, Im ordering my bluetooth reciever this week, and I was just looking for some help. Other than a auto off and max channels, is there anything else I should be looking for with the reciever? Also, anyone that uses GPS software, can you post some pros and cons of the diffrent ones out. TomTom a system hog? Does Telenav and the other have voice prompts? Are any of them worth getting instead of just going with googlemaps?
Thanks all

I use TomTom and i´m very happy with it. Voice promt and maps are fast enough when overclocked to 273Mhz...

tomtom takes 5mb ram - i guess is not such a lot for a device. making a phonecall while navigating is no problem. the program switches sound off - and switches back to tomtom again after call....
i tested
- destiantor (not better)
- mobilenavigator (slooooowwwww)
- etc
But tomtom is the best - even with 247mhz

I've used Iguidance it and it works well, doesn't use much memory either I don't think...but I would still prefer TomTom over it
Need a update
Anyone got any info on what to look for when buying a bluetooth GPS reciever?
Look for a receiver with either a Sirfstar III chip receiver or the MTK chip. A bonus feature would be if they have a mini-usb port for charging purposes.
I've had good luck with Holux receivers. I have the M-1000 bluetooth receiver(MTK chip) which I use with my Wing. The battery life is pretty good and I've been able to lock onto satelites in my living room.
The SIRFIII chip was/is the gold standard until the MTK came along. The MTK offers comparable performance and better battery life for slightly less money.
I also have a Holux Sirfstar III USB receiver as well for my non-bluetooth laptop, but that is another story for another time.

Hello,
i am a little bit convused about the G-sensor on Jade
i have read on many previews on german websites that the jade have this sensor but i can't get it to work
In the registry i found a lot of keys if i change these noting happens.
Is there this sensor in jade if yes how i can get this to work?
i hope somebody understand my bad english *sorry*

The Touch 3G does _not_ have a G sensor.

AGPS means Assisted GPS and enhances the startup performance of a GPS. This feature goes only with GPS and Jade has both of them.
R u telling me that this phone has a gps in the same way that the touch cruise has a gps?
Yes, it has its own gps just like the Cruise.
Do you have a jade? I ask this because i cant find ANY gps software in the htc. I have igo installed and it only recognizes the bluetooth gps i use.
Another thing, some websites state GPS and agps while others only mention agps.
EDIT: which specs does the gps have? Is it sirf III? Why can't i find any specs regarding any gps, other than agps?
I have a Jade, and yes it has GPS, TT7 installed, working fine, I tweaked the phone a little and disabled aGPS, using com4 9600.
Hope this helps.
Unbelievable! For a week now i've had this phone and i have not found anything about gps. I'm using an external antenna.
Can anyone tell me the specs of the gps?
I am not sure if it is needed, but I used QuickGPS to set the hardwareport for programs on comport4.
After that I installed TT7 and placed the receiver on "Other NMEA GPS receiver, 9600b.
Working nicely, even inside although ofcourse better working outside.
What I do know that at the first time with every TT version, you have to wait a minute or so before its starting to pickup signals.
Why don't you just have a look at the official HTC specs ?

Yes, i saw the specs on the site, but not on the phone! How do i turn it on or off? is it always on? where in the user manual do they talk about the freakin gps?!

Gotta agree here. My brother got an Omnia i900 an he had a hard time figuring out how to use the GPS, too.
But I guess someone here will explain it to you. I don't own the Jade yet.
The GPS is activated only if a (navigation) software is active and configured to use the GPS, if no such soft is started the gps is not used. If you have a navigation software active/started and the gps has not the right settings like wrong com port, then the GPS is not used, so it's OFF.
oK, I'll test it today.
Yesterday i read the user manual and the only reference was to the Quick GPS app.
No where else is mentioned the gps capabilities of this phone.
How do i know its not using agps and not standard gps?
Quick GPS is only for faster positioning (download information of satellites by GPRS, WiFi or ActiveSync). Helping program only. You need of some GPS program in order to run GPS. In this program you need first to configure port and speed. Especially in Jade these settings are com-4 and speed-57600 (IGO). But in some other programs may be is different.
Kudos to you guys!
Gps is alive. Tested on both igo and tom tom.
