HSPDA and 3G auto switch on specific programs - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

i just had an idea if anyone has ever heard of something like this. i was wondering since touchflo can be enables and disables upon specific program titles... i was wondering if it would be possible to have a program to auto switch the 3G and HSPDA network upon specific programs as well.
for example: if internet explore is closed the 3G and HSPDA signal would be off, and the device would run off edge to conserve battery, and if internet explore is opened then it would switch the 3G and HSPDA signal on for internet browsing.
of course this can be implemented for specifc programs not just only for internet explore.
i was wondering has anyone ever heard of this before? or could possibly develope this?

i tried the adv config way to doing it, and it dosnt seen to work. i have 2 forms of direct push email, my windows account and my exchange server. so if i would to turn the connection off.. it would just reconnect again

Hr.
well we wanna have a way to map the Gprs or 3G connection to a button.
So when i press a hard or softbutton i can turn gprs or 3G on or of.
That way we dont have to start PIE to start the gprs or 3g connection and then manually close the gprs or 3g connection.
I already found numoures programs or ways to bind wifi on off to a button or shortcut.
Never found a link registry or app to turn on or off by a hard or soft button or a .lnk 3g or gprs
Sorry did i just hijack your topic?

Disable auto connect to GPRS or 3g

Hi
Without going through every application how can I setup the connection options to only automatically connect when wifi is available or when docked. Idealy I would like to be prompted to connect via GPRS or 3g network? Any reg hacks on this one?
Regards
Eric
GPRS connection disable or prompt
hi, I'm having the same issue as above...would like to connect to GPRS manually only.
anyone !??!
me to, i am only on a limited plan for gprs/3g and the costs are quite high 2c p kb.
i use wifi at home a lot, so usually not a problem, but dodgy activesyncs to exchange server, or accidentally opening IE auto connects 3g gprs without prompting.
Any hacks, or software that anybody knows about.
I also need this, i ran my bill up without knowing/wanting to

I have changed my default IE page to "about:blank" - at least it means that IE doesn't go off trying to load a page by default that I'm most likely not interested in, but it also prevents it from connecting GPRS/3G should you start it by accident.
Cheers,
Steve.
Has anyone had any luck with this? I also am on an expensive tariff and unwanted connections prove costly. I have not yet found the answer, but will keep you all posted if I stumble across a setting/hack.
Would also like some tips on this, dont know whats dialling up 3g, but everytime i looked at my phone it was bloody connected grrrr.
Im also intressted, i need like a on/off button for the gprs. My damn egress updates my blogs/rss streams all the time. I have disable autoupdate in egress but it still wants to update sometimes :/
I've found nothing yet and have resorted to removing my GPRS settings until sorted.
I will crack open C# and attempt my first PDA utility - with the aim being to prevent GPRS/GSM from connecting unless something is manually toggled. Wish me luck

What does this cab file do exactly? Does it give you an option to manualy connect or does it turn GPRS off completely? Plus where can we find the option to turn it ON if we can?
One more thing please, can I install this cab file on my O2 XDA Exec without any conflicts since it was made for T-Mobile?
I am not 110% but I believe it appears in a number of carrier ext roms, and just stops GPRS from being attached all the time (like an idle disconnect perhaps?)
When you want GPRS, then you can connect by starting the application you want (ie : Internet Explorer) and GPRS kicks in.
Hope it helps.
Joe
couldnt find it in mine, using the imate jj.
will install and see what happens....
using vijay's method http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37963
you still get the msg that it is trying to connect and eventually an error msg, but better than a big phone bill
Hi guys !
I've installed the .cab on my 9000 and G icon is now disappeared
In the future will be possible to uninstall the .cab and restore the icon ?
Thanks

Mystery Data Connection???

Hey,
I'm experiencing a strange problem with my hermes.
The device wakes up often without a reason. The effect is the following:
. device wakes up
. the connectivity icon changes from 3G to H, means HSDPA connection built up
. spb gprs monitor shows different amount of data transfers
If I close the data connection manually with the red hook on button, the effect doesnt appear any more. So I guess this in an inbound connection made to my device. But how can that be???
Does WM wakes up on inbound connections? How can I find out, which data is being transfered? Are there any network monitoring tools for WM?
Is it right, that to wake up the device from a program that makes an outbound connection an entry in the notification list has to exist? There is nothing. No notification that could wake up the device.
Need help!
Device seeks automatically the strongest signal around. If you stay in an area with both types of signal you will find frquent flipping in and out of 3g UMTS. You may not have experienced this but it can also lead to the dropping of calls also.
You can use Danielherrerro's bandswitch application aka commmgrpro that allows you to easily choose which bands to turn on off.
Mike
I think you misunderstood.
Chaning the band doesnt normaly lead to download traffic.
Btw. I selected gsm instead of gms & umts in the phone options, so the device cant switch. Still waking up and producing some traffic. This effect wasnt there til last week.
Mine does this because it checks for mail every 15 minutes, do you have mail scheduled???
good luck.
Oggy.

Gprs Today Plugin
<seems like an 'in-topic' post>
anyone have any good suggestions on a today-plugin that shows wifi/gprs connection? My theme does not show the connection icon (3g,g,e,etc.), so I was looking for somethig that would show with conenction I was using as a today plugin. Something like the one shoen here in custels rom.
I would use spb gprs monitor, but for some reason all spb applications show this really annoying this line at the top of my screen, so I have given up on spb. any other ideas short of dumping custels ROM? thanks
Definitly dont think thats an application
Problem occurs only if a data connection is still active. If I disconnect manually no wake up occurs.
Seems device is waken up from an external source?!

How to set wifi as default rather than GPRS?

Anyway?
if better , perm disable of GPRS will be good .
Try NoData to disble GPRS. Personally I'm not having much luck with it as my TD2 keep closing it down in background.
Alternative is to deliberately set an incorrect APN so it cannot connect even when it tries.
I don't know of any method of setting a default connection type.
NoData.cab works fine in my device, but HD Tweak can do the same job, so I removed it.
Would like to do the same too, and then have my weather and emails be updated via my home network thru wireless only...
any one able to do this?
Of course you can! Using 3g or any other paying data connection when WiFi is available is simply foolish

Done spose you would like to tell me how please...i am not that clued in with the HTC device just yet...and have used alot of my data already...which i have to pay for...
Thanks..
With pleasure:
Some people say they can deactivate gprs,3g etc within windows..but as I emptied my sim credit within a minute when I first started my Topaz, I decided not to worry anymore by installing Modaco's NoData.cab (it's free, google for it) and disabling all costly data connections from my operator. After a few days I realized that nodata.cab was no longer needed because I had also HD Tweak, who can do the same.If you use it go to point 6. and disable the 3 last settings. So it's up to you:NoData.cab or Hd Tweak...and I'm sure even others utilities work aswell.
Or you simply delete the settings for 3g conections and the software will decide to use WIFI it's avaible instead 3G (because it will not work without settings.)
How do you do that? In this case you would have to do the network autoconfig again if you need 3g etc..anyway this discussion is funny because it is rare to find a thread with multiple solutions recently....I was getting bored of unsolved problems . Cheers !

I have SPB monitor instaleted to verify the traffic.
If 3G it's active and you enable WIFI the application it will use 3G.
If the 3G it's close and open WIFI the application it will use WIFI and don't open 3G.

So it's not about "deleting" anything, you're just using another application (costs USD$19.95). May be a solution
You understand me wrong.
First solution about deleting the connection was the simplest one if you want to use only WIFI.
Second : "I have SPB monitor instaleted to verify the traffic."
I use this app ONLY to verify and to be sure were the app goes to made traffic not for directing the app.
SPB Monitor tell you if you have one or more connections how much traffic you made...
and I see what I tell you if I have 3G closed and WIFI activated the traffic was made on WIFI and 3G remain closed.
But if you have 3G connected and start after that WIFI the 3G will made the traffic.
OK I understand, may I ask you again what are the steps for your first solution?
1. if you don't want to warry about 3G connection and you don't want to use it.
-"Connection setup/menu" disable auto configuration
-"Connections/manage existing connections" and delete all the connections
- enable WIFI and all the programs will use WIFI(will be the single way)
2. If you want to use 3G and WIFI
-when you use WIFI be sure/verify the 3G connection it's closed(click on the status bar-signal strenght icon and if it's active disable it)
-afterthat enable WIFI
Otherwise if 3G it's active will be the first option for applications to acces the internet.
Try to enable Autodisconect (ADV CONFIG or HDtweak) of data connection after you use it to disconnect automatically for you.
I hope I help you.
Solution 1 doesn't work here, wasted a couple of euros ..back to my good ooold system.
i still can't disable it, i just bomb $400 for activating gprs ..
new to WM phone , so ... kinda slow .
If you only want to use wireless all the time, try the following:
Go to Start | Settings | Connections
Click on Connections icon
Click on Advanced tab
Click on Select Networks button
Programs that automatically connect to Internet should use
My Work Network
Programs that automatically connect to a private network should use
My Work Network
Cheers to SEX1 on whirlpool...

Hi, will this solution also fix my issue? My issue being:
-No dataplan, but do not want do disable/delete 3g/gsm, because I still want to use it sporadically on the road, and recieve MMS. But only when I choose to manually.
-At the same time, I want the automatic updates of weather, push-email, stock and such, but ONLY when I'm in a known WLAN.
In simple terms, I want to deny the 3g/E/H from automatically connecting, without deleting them. At the same time, wifi should be allowed to automatically connect, and update selected services.
Is this possible?

How to make wifi the default option to connect instead of gprs?

How do I disable the phone from auto connecting to gprs? I tried testing it by launching opera without switching on wifi. The phone still connects through gprs although I turn data connection off. It will turn data connection on by itself. Even when I switch wifi on and want it to connect through wifi instead, it is still connecting through gprs. How do i solve this?
When wifi is "connected" (not only "on"), it uses wifi, no dataconnection.
If you really don't want a dataconnection, use something like NoData...
i tried NoData but it's not working. i'm using official htc wm6.5 rom.
Sorry I cannot be more precise because I don't use it anymore, but I remember there was an option to block data connection in HDTweak. Is that you want? Block dataconnection permanently? If so, you could alternatively delete your mobile operator connection in Settings/Connections. If anyone knows the registry changes involved in this, please post them so that I can make a .cab, I need it when roaming.
try MWLongLife! It's magic
this program is developed for saving battrey life by controlling 3G/2G network and data usage
you can set each program which need data access by 3G, WiFi, USB, etc.
Also, force to use Wifi rather than gprs if it's available.
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I tried installing nodata again and it worked this time.
for those interested there's also a cab to disable push internet completely (think that was the origin of your problem).
Search the forum on NoPushInternet

Yes please... I was about to post the same issue. I think the precedence in WM6.5 of using mobile wireless over WiFi is the wrong way around if the WiFi signal is strong. In my house, my WiFi is strong everywhere but 3G comes and goes. It's darn annoying to get the message about "No connectivity" when I know for sure there is a very good WiFi signal.
Cheers, Rob.
PS. Just had it whilst writing this email - "Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device..."
It's "WM" not "MW".

setting connection preference ???

is there a way to make sure the phone only connects to my home wi fi hub when at home and does not connect via my 3g vodafone connection. I want it to automatically select the fastest link and not waste my 3g allowance ? I've searched but cannot find a solution, thanks
+1 good idea, anyone got anything on this?
Andi,
The solution I would use would be to go to Settings>Wireless Controls and simply switch Data Connections off, Wifi On when at home.
You would have to remember to to reverse this when done if you want to access 3G services.
WB
u could use G-Profile.. It allows you to set up different profiles and switch them automatically based on your current cell id. Wifi on/3G off when at home, other way around when not. Works like a charm for me
thanks for the tip but when I do that it then automatically turns it back on even when I'm connected to the wireless hub, all of a sudden they both are on . . . . . . .?? any ideas ??
i have the same problem... it keeps using my 3G/EDGE network even if WIFI is available... and i dont get it how can HTC afford not to give us an option to set that the phone asks you for permission when connecting to 3G/EDGE network... this **** costs and im not really happy about the fact that my phone can connect to a network whenever it feels like.
(and yes this **** keeps happening even tho i disabled automatic updates in weather/time applications.)
In BSB tweaks if you press options I think there is an option to disable all data connections. I have never tried it but maybe it will override all connection attempt? Give it a try. Also, I flashed to the 2.01 ROM and I think the data connections are a little less persistent, though I don't wan't to guarantee anything!

does it not do that by default? i cant send emails through t-email when i'm at home - I just presumed this was because i was connected through my wireless router. turning off wifi allows me to send emails.
thus I presumed wifi takes preference?
I am wondering the same thing. The idealist situation would be to have both connections active at the same time, and let the HD2 make sure that wifi is used when the connection is there. Is there some kind of application to verify which connection is being used?
Great thread - I am not the only HD2 owner who is annoyed with the problem with the HD2 switching on its GRPS data connection without my approval!!!
Could it be that the HD2 turns off the wifi when it goes to sleep and then tries to connect to the web using the GPRS network? In that case how do I prevent turning off WIFI when in sleepmode?
I read somewhere else in this forum about a G-profile. Being a newbie with HTC I have no idea what this is. Any clue?
But overall: Yes, it would be great if HTC added an option to set network connection preferences.
WiFi does take preference if it's connected! Dont forget when you are at home and you turn your phone on from standby it will take 10sec or so to connect to your WiFi router, if you try and use IE, Opera, Twitter, Weather Update, Email, etc... before it's connected it will fire up your 3G data connection!
The phone does not how ever turn off your data conn when it's idle which is annoying! You need to use Bandswitch or CommManager from here http://www.commmgrpro.com/jsp/main_frame.jsf;jsessionid=103F335931311F019BD540B82E479383 or WMLonglife from this forum (do a search).
there must be someone out there with ghe know how and expertise to solve this ?? glad to see its an issue for othet folk, i like the idea for selecting wi fi over gprs if its there to be selected.......
I found out that my HD2 automatically closes the 3G connection when I have wifi active. I'm not sure why it does that, I know pretty sure that it had not always done that. But I'm quite happy with it
It turns 3G on again after disconnecting from WIFI, which is what I want.
so if you tap the notifications tab and the "contratc internet" is counting and the wi fii is connected it is using the wifi and not the "contract internet" even though the timer is counting ???
Can anyone confirm ???
p.s tried using the G-Profile software, it seems very inconsistant and didnt always turn off what it should when you select the profile so im going to unistall it.
for some reason the automatic internet settings from vodafone messes up/hides the "The Internet" or "MyISP" connection that is in the phone originally.. I even hard resetted but you just can't seem to stop the automatic settings..
disable the proxy of the "Vodafone live!" connection and it will work.. just like twitter etc..
the same with email only checking through 3G and not wifi.. but set the server settings of your account to "The Internet" after you disabled the proxy.. (advanced settings at the smpt server tab)
hope this helps.. but a thing worries me, as I don't know anything about proxies, why does vodafone specify a proxy if we don't realy need one.. to port us over their live portal or something? (on my old sony ericsson the track ID service didn't work because of that)
"disable the proxy of the "Vodafone live!" connection and it will work.. just like twitter etc.."
thanks but how do i do this ??
anyone know how i do this ? thanks
After including the Taskmanager as a quick link in HTC Sense I am now able to close all programs. Now I do no longer experience any unfortunate GPRS connections when connected to WIFI.
Only problem is that when running on batteries the WIFI connection is closed down when the unit enters sleepmode. However during sleepmode, if I have not closed down programs accessing the web these are now able to connect to the web by using the GPRS connection.
Why on Earth has HTS decided to decipher a click on the X as MINIMIZE and not CLOSE!!!

Sorry, forgot to mention this - but in order to save battery power I have asked the unit to close down the WIFI when in sleepmode (using BsB Tweaks). And indeed it gives me more battery life.
