Tap Screen only to brighten the display - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Is it possible to modify the behavior of the screen tap in such a way:
If
tap when screen is dim then don't do anything but brighten the display
else if
tap when screen is already bright then interact with screen as usual
Basically trying to avoid the device from opening an app when I only want to tap the screen to brighten the display.

that's actually a really good idea!

Thanks, i hope there is a reg mod that can be included in Advanced Config and/or Keiser Tweak tool(s)..........that thing always bothered me, I have to carefully tap on the task bar area since rest of the screen is almost full of things

lol.. that's pretty funny.. i was just thinking about it today.

Good idea, hope someone comes up with something!
What I used to do so far is press UP on the D-pad. Usually does no harm when the device is just standing by.

Forcing the subdisplay? (Display when the keyboard cover closes over the screen)

Is there any way to force the subdisplay to activate? When my keyboard cover closes over the display, it is rather finicky in getting to switch over.
Additionally, I would rather not take the keyboard with me and it would be great to listen to music and see the subdisplay instead of the entire screen being lit up.
There must be a simple way to enable or toggle this. Is there a developer out there willing to make this mod happen? Part of the Development project perhaps?
Thanks

when sub display is on the whole screen is lit so kinda pointless better to develop a screensaver of some type that wont drain battery but shows relevent info maybe a custamizable one???

I don't know if this helps or not; with mine, when I place the keyboard at the back of the unit with the keys facing outwards (as I do most times) it does start up the subdisplay as well (even with the screen open and programs running).
spzero is right.
You can try that with VGA out cable and enable sub display with your keyboard. You can see whole screen is lit and the only difference is the bottom portion of screen changes to a status bar (sub display).
Neat trick!
Still it would be cool if there was a way to force the subdisplay with the rest of the screen black. Even with black color in a lighted screen, it would save energy, like this site:
http://www.blackle.com/
http://www.blackle.com/about/
(low energy version of google due to black screen!)
kww
Making the screen black doen't mean that it consume less energy... mostly because the LEDs used to light the screen are always on (the screen on the Athena is not transflective like most PPC. It means it need a minimum of emitting light to be viewable)

so the best i can do is this.... make background black then need to edit the reg
HKLM\software\htc\subdisplay

(REQ) Backlight issues?

I generally have my backlight set pretty low for indoor purposes (20-30%) hopefully this conserves precious battery life.
However I find it mightily annoying when I'm on the move somewhere brighter than indoors eg. outdoors, and I have to check my phone and cannot see a thing because the backlight is set to "indoor settings" leaving me to navigate to settings> sound and display> backlight etc. This isn't usually a problem but when you can barely see the screen it is difficult.
Does anyone agree (hopefully a bright developer will) that it would great to have a backlight toggle on a quicklink within sense? I think a toggle between the setting you have manually selected and automatic adjustment of the backlight would be a handy application.
Any ideas? Does this already exist?
Nobody interested in this mod? Could save some battery
try myLight of mylostblog. google it. it's a very finger-friendly app that adjusts the backlight whenever you like but you have to set the auto-adjust backlight to off.
I have installed and it works well thanks for the link.
I would still like to see a toggle option between automatic and a preset value.
I would also like a toggle button or buttons for different settings (30%, 60%, 100% or customisable). Another idea would be for the auto backlight to work better. I had a Diamond and it was problematic with that. Not bad for most of the time in UK but if the sun comes out it's almost impossible to see what is on the screen. I might look at a mortscript solution using the reg key for now if I get a chance.
Yea I reckon that would be great. I think the HTC desire has this sort of toggle option in a status bar. To take the idea even further, it would be nice to see this sort of bar added to Cookies Home tab, similar to the new notifications bar added to v1.7.
Possibly: Wifi, backlight, bluetooth, 3g/2g connection all in one bar.
Im trialling MyLight now and it works well, it is finger friend and can be added to a quicklink for easy access, but looks a little dated perhaps.

Auto adjust backlight toggle

I have the backlight set to automatically adjust, but when I am using my phone in the dark, I like it fixed at 10%.
Rather than going through 6 screens to manually update it every time, I would love it if someone could come up with a button (like the WiFi switch on windows market place), so that I can just hit a shortcut on the today screen and the auto adjust is toggled on and off.
The registry entry that turns the auto adjust on or off is called
HKCU\ControlPanel\Backlight and the key is Light Detect On
Any pointers or help would be appreciated!
you can make a link that opens the backlight page directly.
see the "control panel items" link in my sig.
not quite a toggle but reduces the clicks to 2.
Just made a request thread for this yesterday
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=675898
Think it would be a good quicklink for sense

To be honest, I saw your thread back along and didn't quite get it. I do now though!
Can't wait to get home from work and try this. Not a complete solution, but it will certainly save me a load of hassle.
Thanks!
with ya pal!
what gets me is the sensor, when its dark its at full brightness, when its light its dim...... shouldn't this be the other way round?

[Q] HD mini screen calibration

Hello,
I can't seem to find the setting to calibrate my screen. My screen is just off with the touch screen so I need to calibrate it. On other forums I read it should be under: settings menu all system. In that screen there should be a "screen" button. But in my dutch ROM 1.36.404.1 (94358) that button is not there. Can anyone confirm the button should be indeed there? And would there be an other way to start the calibration?
thx
Paul
In settings button, you will see sound & display button, come to the last option in this menu which is of G sensor, calibration, follow instructions and you are done.
option not available

thanks, but I checked it: the last option is G-Sensor, which helps me to calibrate it, the one before is for display: in that one, I can only adjust the brightness settings, when back light is switched off, whether is is controlled automatically etc, but nothing like screen calibration. Would this be ROM dependent?
There is no screen calibration control for current HTC models with capacitive screens. The original calibration control doesn't work as it's designed for stylus input and needs a pin point press to register.
So, HTC leave the Screen control out of the build, which is also the reason Cleartype can't be activated as it's part of the same control.
If you really want to try it, look in the Cleartype topic for the registry change needed to make the Screen control visible, but beware that using screen calibration might make things worse rather than better !
Inaccurate touch centering is one of the built-in downside of capacitive touch screens. There's no such thing as pin-point accuracy in this territory.
We're seeing similar complaints about Android devices, especially the Nexus One. The theory is that the software is supposed to be intelligent enough to register where a 'broad' point of contact is intended to be centred, but sometimes it simply doesn't work as it should.
The only remedy, if a soft reset doesn't sort it is to do a hard reset but reports say the benefits of this may only be short lived.
Use this registry setting
HKLM\ControlPanel\Pen and change from 1 to 0.
infact u dun need this function coz u'll never pass the calibration, i'd juz tried it yesterday(the capititive mon can't make an accurate calibration)
at last i need to soft-reset my device to leave the calibration page= =

(GUIDE) Tap to wake Any Samsung Device! (no Root)

this is a guide for Samsung mobile phones who'd like the function of LG tap to wake\lock the screen
using only apps and nova launcher prime.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su2WwTfH-y0
Tap to Wake/Lock screen Guide is for Samsung Amoled device Only\for all any device with amoled screen/
things you need to know before we start -
you'll have to use Nova Launcher Prime (can be purchased trough the free version) as your primary launcher.
set up your nova launcher prime as your default launcher and continue to the next step
The next step we will have to use two applications-
The first is
Screen Off And Lock
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...e/apps/details?id=tecnology.angs.knockr&hl=en...
Once you've installed it open up the application there are things set up and its easy to get confused,
set up the settings like i did one by one.
When you first open the app it will take you trough a small tutorial that will require you to create a simple Knock Code (Were going to remove this one later on)
When you're done you'll be taken to settings under the "Gestures Settings" menu -
all options are marked to do "Nothing" except
Double Tap - set it to Screen On
swipe right in the app to Knocks Settings - Do not bother to remove the code that is there by default - do not remove the code - instead set it to do nothing and swipe left again to the last and most important menu -Settings -
Fill \ Mark V according to the to my settings as the following -
Screen type - Black Screen
Power Management - V
Capacitive Buttons - V
Screen Locked - V
Action Type - Gestures (this is most important) !!!
Everything else is unmarked except the settings that are unchangeable by default.
were Almost done -
Returning to the settings menu in the Nova Launcher
Enter the Gestures & Inputs
scroll down and click on Double Tap
Now we have entered the list the top three sub menus -
NOVA - APPS - SHORTCUTS ׁׁ
Go to APPS and scroll down until you see
"Screen off" (not the "off and Lock Screen Configuration")
After we set off the Screen You can tap the screen two times and the configuration screen opens here - also follow closely after my settings (prove to work best) to preserve battery life and cause all this process to work like in the video
Screen off and Lock Configuration settings - everything should be umarked and all il sound options are Disabled (to my taste) - the only thing I marked was
Use relock workaround 1.
Everything else should not be marked (as recommended for better battery life)
This is it, you can start and enjoy your Samsung with LG's tap to wake
its not perfect but its very convinent
this is my first guide on xda!
edit: right now night clock is not co-operating with this tweak, if you want your night clock to work set the information stream timeout to 30 seconds or more.
while night clock screen is on tap to wake does not work untill it sleeps again or pressing the physical lock button.
works brilliantly - thank you
It's worth noting that these kind of mods will keep your screen digitizer on all the time and probably will cause a battery drain. just FYI

i assume that the black pixels on amoled screen does not trigger battery drain...
anyway on Lg's the digitizer has to work as well to acknowledge the double tap,
i am only a novice would be happy to learn, i really enjoy this function but will surely remove it if it hurts my battery life...
so is there any other solution?

He's talking about the digitizer which must constantly wait for touch input, not the display. He's quite probably correct.
it sleeps again or pressing the physical lock button.
Got me excited untill I read it was only for Nova Launcher.
Having one for Touchwiz......now that's a neat trick.
I miss it.....I still double tap my screen all the time.
Couldn't it be set to use the acceleromator (sp)? It wouldn't turn the digitizer on unless it detected a quick jolt? It would then need to be a 3 tap to wake so it could first wake up and then detect the 2 taps, but that's just a guess...

I'm afraid there isn't. All mods that make the screen work when the phone is in deep sleep will deplete battery life in some way. The information stream is one of them. My battery life improved substantially as soon as I turned this off. Anyway, we have a home button on this device so no need to reach for the power button in awkward places like other devices. Enjoy the home button and forget about these mods. Just my opinion.
i tried this on my s6 without nova and it work fine...the knock on work just fine...now need to monitor battery for a day or two to see if it drains abnormally. thanks @mosesbd for solving my only grudge with samsung phone...
I'm used this for long times ago, but it drain phone's battery. Because it just turns off the screen but not deep-sleep.
Update the links, the links don't work, but search for the apps in the app store and you should be fine
Not sure if the drain would be too much. My old BB Z10 I used for work had a similar function. Swipe up and it would wake and unlock. Battery was great.
The Lumia 1020 I use as my personal line has double tap to wake and battery life is great. Having the feature along with Glance didn't make much of a difference in battery life for me.
May or may not make a big difference on a phone that didn't have this functionality built in.
Thx thats great
Waiting for battery life reply
N i have issue
The back key n multitasking lights up when locking the screen. ..
Why ??

thanks, it should be fine now.
hello, compared to the gesture wake up which one drains more battery?
If screen is set for 15s, battery drainage isn't a huge problem. It's fine in my opinion on the latest firmware.
Do use this n enjoy tap-to-screen off
If you guys are worried about battery drain, then try this app out........360 Hibernation Master. I've had it for months now and it WORKS LIKE A CHARM! It basically shuts down all your apps when screen is off (including data and Wi-Fi), but you can STILL get texts (SMS & MMS), IMs, e-mails, calls, etc. I go to bed with 100% power, and wake up 7 hours later........ it's STILL at 100% (or else 99%)!!!!!!! The problem with Samsung's and other phones' "Power Saver Mode" is that they cause issues with incoming group and/or photo (aka, MMS) text messages, but this one DOESN'T! Costs $1.95 for full version (you upgrade WITHIN the app), but WELL worth it!!
Note: If you game a lot though, you MAY notice a slight decrease in speed. But if you're like me and NOT a gamer, then I think it will work just fine for what we're doing here. I haven't tested it though, so if someone wants and report back here, go ahead! I have the Sony Xperia Z3, but I just pre-ordered the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, so when I get it, I'll post back here to let you know if it works or not. But if you have a Samsung phone now, go for it! And let us know!
