cheers
Using your device as a modem to your PC via USB
This is for GPRS connection
You must have from your network provider: the internet access point name, your user name and password.
Download and unzip the attached file in a folder on your desktop
1- Disconnect the device from your desktop
2- On the Activesync icon on your desktop, open "Connection Settings". Uncheck "Allow USB Connection".
3- On your device: Go to "Beam" (in Settings/Connections), and uncheck "Receive all Incoming beams".
4- Then in Programs, click on "Wireless Modem". With the Connection type on USB, click on "Start".
5- Now, connect your device to the desktop. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" starts on your desktop. Click "Install from a specific location", then "Don’t search. I will choose…", then click on "Modems", and "Have Disk…" and go to the folder where you unzipped the attached file.
The HTC USB Modem will be shown in the compatible hardware: click to install. Continue if you receive the alert of the software not passing the Windows XP compatibility test (Continue anyway). Finish.
6- Now, in Control Panel of your desktop, open "Phone and Modem Options". Select the "HTC USB Modem" and click on "Properties". In the "Advanced" tab type for "Extra initialization commands":
AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”xxx”,””,0,0
where xxx is your internet access point.
Click OK to finish.
7- On your device (always open in the Wireless Modem program), click on Tools/Options. Check the Preset GPRS connections and write in the APN, your network provider internet access point.
8- Finally, on your desktop, go to "Network Connections" and click "Create a new connection". Choose "Connect to the internet", then "Set up my connection manually". Click "Connect using a dial-up modem", then give a name to your ISP. In phone number type *99#. Get username and password from your network provider.
Better keep a shortcut of this connection on your desktop for quick access.
Each time you want to use your device as a modem:
Disconnect your device
Disable Activesync from your desktop by unchecking the “Allow USB connection”
Open Wireless Modem on your device and push on Start (with the Connection Type on USB)
Connect your device, then dial from your desktop using the shortcut you created
PS: Remember to enable Activesync once you’ve finished.
Hi Tekflow
I have never seen on this forum such a precise and simple guide !
You thought of everything and it is working perfectly for me
Until now I had a Novatel internal UMTS modem, but using the JJ is much better
Thanks mate (actually neighbour...)
Raphael
How much of Tekflow's excellent guide applies to Bluetooth modem connections?
Well, guys and dear neighbour, regarding Bluetooth, I did not try it yet, because I work on a desktop and not a notebook, so I prefer USB connection.
Still you can try this:
(If your PC does not have an integrated Bluetooth connection, you must first install a Bluetooth dongle (USB to Bluetooth) on your PC, with the related software (widcomm or other))
Open on your PC in the Control Panel the Phone and Modem Options
Choose Modems, pick the Bluetooth Modem, then click on Properties
Click on Advanced tab
Type in Extra Initialization commands:
AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”xxx”,””,0,0
where xxx is your internet access point.
Now, on the Wireless Manager of your device, turn WiFi Off, and Bluetooth On, then click on Settings/Bluetooth Settings and check "Make this device discoverable..."
On your PC:
Click on Bluetooth icon (My Bluetooth places)
Click Bluetooth Setup Wizard.
Choose I want to find a specific Bluetooth device …
After a search period, an icon of your device is displayed (usually with your owner’s name): double click for settings
From the Dial-up Networking Links, click on SSA
SSA settings: Modem: Bluetooth Modem
Number to dial: *99#
User name and password, according to Network provider
Please tell me if this works
Tekflow:
Thanks for your additional input. I'm not having any success though, although I'm convinced I'm not far from success.
I'm confused: In the help for my laptop's BT it says that "Dial-up Networking allows a remote Bluetooth device to use a modem that is physically attached to [the laptop]."
When I search for Bluetooth devices, choose my Exec and then browse the Exec services, I see the service "Dial-up Networking on HTC Universal". Is this correct? Maybe both the laptop and the Universal offer this service. I want to use the DUN on the Universal but don't need it on the laptop. Is that right? (I can disable DUN in the laptop's list of services?)
I've turned on BT on the Universal and started the Wireless Modem app, choosing Bluetooth as the Connection Type.
So, I've created a Bluetooth modem attached to COM5 with your special initialisation command (using 'mobileweb' as my internet access point). When I query the modem it responds confirming it's a Pocket PC. All looks good.
I've created a new dial-up connection, using the new Bluetooth modem and with the connection properties for O2 GPRS (number= *99#, username= mobileweb, password= password).
However, when I try to connect this new DU connection, I immediately get the error dialog on the PC- "Error 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly."
Any ideas?
OK, here is another step by step:
First on the UNIVERSAL open Wireless Manager: turn WiFi OFF and Bluetoth ON
then in Settings select Bluetooth Settings, and check "Make this device discoverable to other devices".
To set up Bluetooth drivers on your PC, click on the Bluetooth icon in the System Tray in the bottom right hand corner of the PC's screen. Click 'Add' to begin the search for the UNIVERSAL. Note that some PC's are installed with other types of BT software that will look slightly different.
Check the 'My device is set up and ready to be found' (discoverable) and press 'Next'.
After a short period of searching, an icon representing the device will apppear, with your owner's name used on the Universal.
Select the UNIVERSAL device and begin the Bluetooth "Pairing/Bonding" process. Select the 'Use the Passkey found in the documentation' and enter the appropriate PIN (usually "0000") and then press 'Next'.
The pairing process begins with the UNIVERSAL.
On your UNIVERSAL, enter the same Passkey/PIN entered on the PC and tap on the 'ok'. The Partnership Settings screen will appear, press Finish.
Windows™ XP Service Pack 2 automatically detects and installs the drivers.
Press Finish to complete the Pairing of the PC and Device.
Clicking on the System Tray Bluetooth icon again will now find the previously bonded UNIVERSAL. Select the device and click Properties.
Check the available services on the UNIVERSAL. Select the Dial-Up Networking (DUN) Bluetooth Profile and click OK.
From the Network Connections screen click on "Create a new connection" and click "Next".
Proceed with the following: "Connect to the internet", then "Set up my connection manually", then "connect using dial up modem"
Select the Bluetooth link, click Next, then OK on the next window
Name the Connection and click Next.
Enter the User name and Password for the Connection and click Next. Then click Finish. The dial up connection is now setup.
Now use the Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options to add in your operator's APN:
Select Bluetooth Modem and click Properties. Then select the Advanced tab at the top. You must enter your operator's APN (Access Point Name) to the internet in that location. This is a common mistake and the modem won't work without it! This information is also contained in the UNIVERSAL in the 'Start > Settings > Connections > Tasks > My ISP > Manage Connections'. The APN for the O2 UK network, for example is "mobile.o2.co.uk", so the line would be at+cgdcont=1,"IP","mobile.o2.co.uk".
[The APN selects which path the data takes within your operator's network. Alternatives to the internet APN may be APN's to WAP or MMS servers.]
Optionally, the Access Point can also be defined in the WModem > Tools menu.
On the UNIVERSAL, run the Wireless Modem application by pressing Start > Programs >Wireless Modem. Select Connection Type: Bluetooth. Then tap Start.
From Network Connections, dial the recently created connection (i.e. "My dial-up to the Internet via UNIVERSAL Bluetooth Modem" if that was the name assigned to it).
UNIVERSAL Dial-up Connection Progress: "Dialing *99#" then "Verifying username and password" then "Registering your computer on the network"
Finally, the popup shows that the modem is now connected
When finished browsing or e-mailing, first right click the connections icon on the right hand side of the PC and press disconnect. Then deactivate the USB Modem by pressing Stop at the WModem application.
Tell me if this works, because I still don't have a bluetooth connection on my PC
thanks for a great set of instructions, very easy to follow. However it does not quite seem to work for me. I can add the exec as a modem and when I try to connect I can see that a gprs/ 3g connection is made on the exec. On my laptop it goes through the authenticating user prompt, but when it gets to registering the computer on the network it just times out and the exec drops the connection, any ideas?
I am using
Username: o2web have tried mobileweb as well
Password: password
advanced command: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","mobile.o2.co.uk","",0,0
wireless modem apn: mobile.o2.co.uk
Hiya megman,
In anticipation of doing tech support at my folks' house tomorrow (dial-up *shudder) I decided to set my trusty Exec up as a modem. Booze almost certainly smoothed the process out
Some notes: (a) I'm a tad drunk . (b) On the Exec, I had to make a new modem connection. I use "work" for both connection types so added my new connection there. (c) I first paired my Exec with my lappie, choosing serial port and then set up an incoming com port on 4.
Having done this, and topped up my glass, I did:
1) Connect from lappie to Exec on BT, choose dial-up networking, use the string from Tekflow (respect going out):
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","mobile.o2.co.uk","",0,0
in the advanced bit. Set the phone number to *99#; username:mobileweb; passwordassword.
2) On Exec, make a new connection (I didn't have one to start with) Manage Existing Connections > New... -> line:cellular gprs; APN:mobile.o2.co.uk; username:mobileweb; passwordassword; no advanced stuff.
3) Connect that puppy
4) Start Wireless Modem, making sure it's a bluetooth connection
5) On lappie, connect to the Exec via Bluetooth Settings window.
6) Job's a good 'un. Use new connection to do this!
HTH
Thanks this_mike. I forgot to put on my post that I was trying a USB connection though. I don't have bluetooth on either of my laptops.
Two things...
First, a massive thanks to Tekflow for your great setup instructions... i had been trying to do this for ages without any success
Second, for those Vodafone 3G users, the setup instructions are exactly the same, except the username and password (in the UK at least) are:
Username: web
Password: web
THANKS, THANKS, THANKS!!!
Dear,
Million Thanks to Tekflow and all the folks engaging in sheding lights on all this. I had been wrestling the use of that since my old XDA I -> XDA II. And now i just succeeded using the wireless modem with my XDA Universal.
Thank you
Ken

Nice work Tekflow
I added a link to this topic in the wiki under Universal/FAQ
How can I figure the username/password for T-Mobile USA?
t mobile mda pro user pass ?? anyone?
Thanks to Tekflow et al. I have now managed to connect using both methods [USB/Bluetooth], I prefer BT over USB though so I don't have to keep on fiddling with Activesync Connection Settings. BTW am posting this now using my Exec as the modem.
Some of your posts helped me flush out this problem, so I thought I'd share my find.
Problem: ActiveSync USB does not connect to Qtek9100/HTC Wizard OR connects but never syncs
Solution(s):
1. Uninstall/reboot/reinstall ActiveSync 4.x
2. Hard reset your mobile device
3. Configure your PC firewall correctly, see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx
4. When you connect to your USB, go to Network Settings on PC
5. Find your Mobile Device, something like Local Area Connection #5
6. Select Properties, make sure TCP/IP, Client for Microsoft…, Client File and Print… are ALL CHECKED. For some strange reason, mine were not and this was the problem. Default setting should be fine for all three. ActiveSync 4.x uses the TCP/IP stack to communicate, therefore you need to get a DHCP address from the PC ActiveSync Client (this is all automatic)
7. Make sure your Mobile 5 Active Sync is configured to use USB, mine was under MenuConnection and required selecting the check box to use USB.
8. You should be good to go!
9. A fall back technology is IrDA, but hopefully the above worked for you!
Best,
Ldr. D
Though even after doing everything you need to do you will still find that every few synchs Activesync will hang and refuse to do anything until you have shutdown and restarted wcescom, rebooted your 9100 or both. Still defies logic how a microsoft OS synchronizing with a microsoft OS via a microsoft synch product should have so many problems.
Active sync via USB
I never get a Network connection. it selects a network adapter. any ideas?
Another issue that I beat my head against is the "Modem Link" under Programs. If that bloody thing is active, then it will NOT see a USB link to ActiveSync. I was working out the kinks of the modem a couple days ago, and found today that AS wouldn't work. Of course I went through the whole install, reinstall, reboot, pound head, etc. before getting to the modem link issue.
I'm trying to use the factory installed Internet Sharing (not the new HTC Wifi Router, not WMWifirouter, just the regular factory installed Internet Sharing) to get internet access on my PC via USB (not Bluetooth).
I've spent hours and hours reading and trying different things but it still does not work. Can someone please explain the settings they used to get this to work?
Settings for Active Sync?
Settings for Network Connections on PC?
Settings on phone?
I have tried all possible combinations of settings and am absolutely STUMPED. I'd appreciate ANY help.
FYI: My PC's running XP
EDIT:
So, I got the Internet Sharing to work and just wanted to share what I learned in case it helps someone else. I'm using the HD with stock WM 6.1 and a PC running XP with Active Sync 4.5.
My problem was that even after applying all the correct settings, Internet Sharing was never able to establish a connection (it kept saying "check USB connection"). I noticed in my PC under My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager that there was an exclamation point beside the phone network adapter, so I updated/uninstalled/reinstalled the driver with no success. This driver is normally automatically installed when you first install Active Sync and create a partnership with your phone, so then I decided to uninstall and reinstall Active Sync and then created a new partnership with my phone (I didn't have to worry about losing any of my synced contacts, notes, calender, texts, etc because I also sync with Microsoft MyPhone, which I highly recommend). Afterwards, I disconnected my phone from the PC and closed Active Sync. Then I used the following settings/steps and Internet Sharing worked flawlessly.
Here are the settings I used:
-in Active Sync: unchecked "allow usb connection", unchecked "allow connections to one of the following", "this computer is connected to" set to automatic, checked "open active sync when my device connects", checked "allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop"
-in PC: disable Windows Firewall and all other 3rd party firewalls
-in PC internet explorer: set LAN settings to "automatically detect settings" (in Firefox under Tools>Options>Advanced>Network>Settings set to "auto detect")
-in phone: under Start>Settings>Connections>USB to PC checked "Active Sync", unchecked "enable faster data synchronization", checked "ask me first about UBS connection type when I connect the device to the PC"
With these settings:
-connect your phone to PC (on phone, dialog box should appear showing Active Sync checked, USB unchecked, Internet Sharing unchecked)
-nothing should happen at this point
-then in phone, launch Internet Sharing, set PC Connection to "USB", set Network Connection to whatever data network your phone uses, then press "connect" (the status will change from "disconnected" to "check USB connection"); wait about 15-20 seconds while your PC reacts (it takes this long only the first time you connect because the PC is installing the appropriate drivers)
-the Internet Sharing status should change to "connected" and now you can use the internet on your PC through the data connection on your phone. So simple if everything works properly.
FYI:
-if you go back to PC under My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager you will see your phone network adapter (no longer with an exclamation point) called "Windows Mobile-based Internet Sharing Device"
-f you go to PC Network Connections you will see your new phone LAN connection
-if your phone falls asleep while connected, the internet connection does NOT get interrupted; I also received a text while it was connected with no problem
To Disconnect Internet Sharing:
-close all browsers, press disconnect on your phone, then unplug your phone from the PC
-you can now turn active sync back on by checking "allow usb connection" and turn your PC firewalls back on
Wow, sorry so long, hope it helps someone.

If your trying to do this at work, there is most likely a firewall setup so this wouldn't be possible unless your knew access codes etc for firewall
If this is with your home pc, when connecting pc to HD using usb you should automatically be presented with a synchronization screen from activesync for setting up a connection. Ensure you select 'allow wireless data connections on your device while it is connected to your computer' before finishing
And also :-
On the Touch HD
Start - Settings - Connections - USB to PC
Check Activesync and uncheck "enable faster data synchronisation"
Spent a couple of hours trying to connect before I did this.
Hope this works for you.
r
Andrew
Thanks guys for your responses.
I've already tried each one of those things. I'm at home with firewall disabled, have the correct boxes checked in Active Sync, have the correct connection settings on the phone, etc. I've tried all possible combinations.
When I go to My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager I even see the phone Network Adapter but it has an exclamation point beside it. So I try to update/uninstall/reinstall the driver and it still doesn't work. Do I need to manually install different USD Modem drivers?? This doesn't seem right because these drivers should automatically be installed when I installed Active Sync.
I'm gonna try to update everything e.g. xp service pack and uninstall/reinstall Active Sync, etc. Hopefully after all of that it will work.
Hi,
I have found several posts somewhat similar to this one but actually none of them reported exactly my problem, that's why I dare posting a new thread.
After first use of my Touch HD in "Internet Sharing" mode, ActiveSync stopped working at all. Every time I connect the phone to a laptop with USB cable, it shows the option screen with "Internet Sharing" chosen as default. I can tick the ActiveSync radio button and then Done button but I get no connection. The laptop shows a new "local connection" with some private IP assigned but ActiveSync icon stays grey. The DiskDrive mode works fine but here also something has changed: HD does not remember this option as default for the next connection (as it used to before). I tried that with two laptops, same effect. Tried unchecking "Enable advanced network functionality" - no success. Tried soft-reset the phone and restart the XP on laptops - no success either.
I am using ActiveSync quite a lot, although in Guest mode only, for new software installation (many do not have CAB versions) and quick data transfer that does not disable all my software installed to SD card (as the Disk Drive mode does).
I guess (still not tried, however) that a HR would fix the problem but I think it is not a right way to switch between Internet Sharing and ActiveSync
any help would be much appreciated,
regards, Michal.

Hi Michal,
When you started Internet Sharing mode on your laptop I dont think that should have interferred with your ActiveSync. Internet Sharing basically turns your PC into a DHCP server just like a router - it hands out IP addresses (with a given range, subnet mask etc). Internet traffic can then be routed via the PC.
Check your IP settings on both your laptop on also within the connection settings on your HD. The IP settings on your HD should have a static IP address and NOT be set as automatically assigned, as you suggested.
As you have the same problem on two laptops I would hazard a guess that its the IP settings on your HD, try changing this.
Best Regards.
I guess there is a misunderstanding. I used my Blackstone as Internet Sharing device, not the PC. The phone was connected to the Internet via GPRS/EDGE and the laptop was using this connection.
regards, Michal.
Hello,
I searched the forum but found nothing...
is there a way that active sync downloads automatically new exchange stuff ONLY from a wireless connection (I disabled data) ?
no, not possible. Activesync only works with a direct cable connection, serial or TCP-IP, or bluetooth. The software is old and cranky and Microsoft has essentially not updated it in years and is stuck in a 2002 timewarp. They do not have anyone actively working on it, now Windows 7 connection manager may allow wi-fi, but I have not seen that to work either, as it is configured to work on with serial ports, USB or bluetooth serial. I have not seen wi-fi able to emulate a serial connection and that is what is required.
Maybe someday, but not soon, I am afraid.
More thoughts, if you mean getting email from your server, through activesync, yes that is possible, as you only need to open activesync connection settings and check the box to allow wireless connection while the device is connected. If this is what you mean, then yes you can.
Sorry, I think you misunderstood me, let me explain more clearly :
I'm speaking from my touch pro 2 mobile device, not from my PC
What I mean is when you have a working data 3G (or whatever) connection on your WM device, you activate push mail and tell active sync in the schedule options to retrieve emails, calendar, contacts whenever "item arrives".
Now, from what I know and from what I was been able to discover, this only works if, like I said, you have a working data connection.
Since I don't have any data connection, i would like to keep the same behavior but with my WM connected to a Wifi, in order that he retrieves stuff only when connected to a Wifi

I didn't find that setting (while im connected to a Wifi)
In active sync when I tip "Menu", I get :
Options -> there i can delete the sync profile or edit it
Schedule -> there i can say when to sync stuff
Status -> the status
Configure server -> same menu than "Options", but directly in the edit mode
Connections -> there it says :
When cradled
Synchronize all PCs using this connection:
'BlueToothActiveSync
'USB
Connect via Bluetooth -> bluetooth stuff
so please let me know what you mean with "allow wireless connections"
ho, btw i'm running wm 6.5 (energy rom)
Edit : I forgot to add that what's weird is that if i synchronize manually (also trough wifi) it works..so why isn't there some option to made it work automatically ?
I've seen that happen too - connect via cable with the wifi active and it will start synching, then disconnect the cable and viola - the tilt2 stays connected via wifi. but how to initiate the same connection without the cable, that's the great mystery.
auto connect with wifi?
