Does anyone know an alternative to Terminal Services Client?

Hey there, now that I've got my shiney new XDA Exec, with its VGA Screen and inbuilt Wi-fi I want to have a play with the Terminal Services Client to control my PC...I'm pretty sure that's what it can be used for right?
Well anyway from what I've read TSC can connect to (among other things) Win XP Pro computers with remote desktop enabled...however my computer only has XP Home so I can't do this, so can anyone recommend an alternative (possibly better?) program that I can use to control my XP Home PC using my XDA Exec....
cheers!
VNC (free)
GoToMyPC (not free)
There is more information in the "terminal services full screen" thread in this forum.
I have been using GoToMyPC for a long time. It's a subscription-based service. But I am happy with it. Very stable and functional. And full-screen.
prob with those apps is, terminal services connects to all modern windows operating systems and no extra software is needed, im not running round the country installing vnc onto everything, if its already got RDC/Terminal Services intergrated. On my work network i have access to 36k+ machines, yer 36,000 machines. all 2000,XP,2003, the other 30k machines are still NT or 98, upgrades aint a overnight thing!!!
so you see, not an option im afraid
*edit* what really grinds me is that i would have thought it was obvious to M$ that fullscreen should be an option, but as with the diabolical MSNM, the most obvious upgrades never appear, surlly in that groups aint a hard thing to do. and turn the bloody beeping off when ppl sign in.
Obvious things strategicly lost??
use www.logmein.com man its freakin great and you can use for free
if you put your device in landscape it is a clean view too
z2remote2pc works a little better than logmein, I think. A little more control of the desktop with z2. LogMeIn is nice though.
but do these apps use the RDC protocol ? i cannot amend 30k+ machines just to do remote desktop, it has to be compatible else its pretty useless to me soz
Carnivor, I presume your request is satisfied?
Why on earth 30,000 machines? Heyzus!
What PDA are you using?
V
30k machines is roughly the number of client machines the company i work for has. i have access to them all via TS, not that i need them all, i mainly access a handful of desktops that are mine, and the clients servers.
its quite handy to be able to wifi my desktop in the room next door when im standing at a rack in the server room as there is nothing but racks in there and an additional desktop in there would get easilly spotted.
im on a Jasjar btw, happy to test your app wink wink**
and i have VS 2005, is it poss for a 2003 project to be loaded into VS 2005 and compiled??? if you aint got it yet its a possibility
ps, ohh yes, im satisified, its what should have been done on theyre attempt ( M$ )
Carnivor - I have Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2. I'm waiting on RC1 because the tools I use in Beta 2 don't work properly on the WM5 emulator. As soon as I get a new version of VS2005, I'll sort through the WM5 issues and bang out a preliminary version for you guys to try.
The current version should still work nicely even on Wm5, but only in Portrait QVGA. However, a full landscape VGA version should follow soonish.
If you've got a spare VGA PDA, send it my way! I'm desperate
V
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
Version 8.0.50727.42 (RTM.050727-4200)
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 2.0.50727
thats the version i have

One upon a time....

I use to have a XDA 2 (well, SPV M1000) and (the important thing) a folder named "My XDA 2 must have". The software I use most, the software to backup, the software to keep not only to try. Like:
1. Sprite Backup
2. Visual IT Rough Guide to London (like A-Z map to central London + extras)
3. Splash ID
and not last
4. TomTom 5 .... and others that I miss already.
And THEN, here it is, I waited so long for it, (Exec) that I decided to switch from Orange, to O2, (Orange don't have this even now). Three days of "testing"...Well the device is great....Windows 5 isn't. (At least for me.)
My folder (My XDA 2 must have) is now "The software that doesn't work on WM5" ...None of the four named programs work...it takes ages to charge, it's slow, everything has changed...and how about that 'program' included "Clear Storage"??!!!
I thought it was something like remove programs, not a bloody HARD RESET!
Everything seems to say about Windows 5.....WHY FIX IT IF IT AIN'T BROKEN??!!!
BTW: Does anybody know a decent Wi-Fi Connections Manager that WORKS?? (Hitchhiker crashes my Exec, Retina Scanner wants to know what my socks size is when registering, Wi-Fi Companion Doesn't Install in WM5.........)
I am glad I didn't sell my SPV M1000 yet....but I want to....I love the Exec, but hate what it does...or rather what it doesn't!
..............helps us all !!!
You seem surprised that a major version upgrade (WM2003 to WM5) comes with occasional problems. Didn't we see the same when we changed from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95?
Later versions of desktop operating systems have some backwards compatibility built in, but with the limited resources of the PPC platform I guess they couldn't achieve everything.
We may not know what they are yet , but I'm sure WM5 has built-in features that drive the platform on another big leap and over time we'll take them for granted. I looked at my XDA2 last night (now two days-worth of dust gathering on it) and was reminded how fast it responded to commands, but it looked dated already compared with my shiny new Exec.
Don't forget, we're early adopters of WM5 and we're always going to have problems. When ROM upgrades are released and developers get new versions out for us, we'll wonder how we ever lived without it!
In case you haven't seen it yet, there's a thread running over at www.tekguru.co.uk listing the software that works perfectly on WM5. I found it useful when looking for replacements for my old WM2003 versions.
I have #2 and #4 working (for #4 you need TT 5.1 - d/l the update from their site)
Reinstall from fresh I reckon. And you are using activesync 4 not 3.8 still?
I agree with SiliconS.. I'm always wanting the very latest of everything (hardware and software) and to be honest, I'm surprised how good windows mobile 5 is!
There are many problems, like icons disappearing and speed etc..but they're not life threatening.
I only hope that the providers are going to keep up with the developers and release their specific patches..if not then I'll have to convert to the Jasjar rom
I love the MDA PRO even with it's problems.
Thanks for the help guys. I'll try these options as well.
BTW, anyone has any problems with the AvantGo software?
Also
#1 Try googling : Sprite Backup v3.2.0 build 2487.
Should be working with JJ.
Best of Luck.

This is real? had you used and work with restores?
Thanks.
From the Sprite Backup developers website:
"Sprite Backup is only compatible with devices using Windows Mobile 2002 and 2003. Windows Mobile 2005 devices cannot use Sprite Backup. We will be releasing a new version that will be compatible with these devices in the near future. Please keep visiting this site for updates."
I did try the version you mentioned but no luck. I use a Exec not a JJ...coud that be it? Thanks anyway...and damn I need a backup program...[/quote]
Here I am after another whole day of reading forums, installing and uninstalling, hard resets, trial and error....and things like that.
As far as the XDA is concerned....I feel better about it now, installed SPB Pocket Plus (works a dream), SPB Finance (great 'cuz it syncs with Quicken), and most of all, swiched to "Corporate" mode...and man, it is FAST now !!!
As mentioned before, Sprite Backup doesn't work, AvantGo works but not as it should, SplashID....nope. I did try eWallet, which works ok on the desktop but not on the XDA.
It's all good fun though.

I'm thinking that I might go for a hard reset and choose Corp, but I don't know how to set up the GPRS details. How did you get GPRS working for Corporate Mode, or haven't you needed to?
I do find the settings for all these connections v.confusing. I just want it simple, like my laptop! One connection does all...
Now that you mentioned that, I wouldn't know if I need different setting yet, as I am still on Orange for the next couple of days until they port my number. Interesting to see if it works though.
I've tried today the GPRS, G3 connection and it worked without changing anything. (In Corporate mode)

Can a Palm OS platform run simultaniously on a WM6 phone?

Hi guys, I have an HTC touch (sprint) and got a job with a air balancing company and they have software that links their ppc's to their server for live data entry. however the application is only available for the palm os. Does anyone know if installing multiple OS's on a phone is even possible, like installing linux on an ipod? or if not, any way to convert a palm os application to WM6 combatible application. If needed, i have the install files for my application, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. If nothing exists i would even consider payment for the application to be convtered if anyone is intrested.
Thank you
Matt
you would probably have to build the application up again from the ground up if its a native palm application, although, if its written in a common language, i dont see why it couldnt be ported over
somebody more knowledgable should be able to help you better
and welcome to xda-devs
you can use styletap to run palmOS apps on windows mobile, if this is what you want to do.
Well, im 50% there, styletap works great, im able to load the software and run it, no glitches yet, however styletap doesnt seem to be allowing the application to sync with my server. any1 have any ideas? i even tried first establishing a data conn in WM6 using IE and hopped back to style tap to sync again. no luck

Mac users with X1's (or any WinMo phone for that matter!)

So I was wondering, what Mac-users here are using to make life easier using a Windows Mobile phone with a Macintosh?
I currently use SyncMate (free version, just for contacts and agenda backups) and have tried using Doublemate to sync my phone to iTunes, but that didn't work yet and actually haven't tried anymore since months. So I just copy over musicfiles from iTunes to the X1 in USB-mode.
For movies I just use iSquint to re-encode them to MP4's to watch in the mediapanel. Still need to find a way to properly tag my iTunes library because I'm still getting 'unknown artists' which of course is highly annoying!
I backup a lot of mobile-snapshots with iPhoto, which I find to be an excellent and easy-to-use photomanager though with poor flickr-integration (I use flickr-uploader mostly anyway).
So, Mac user's of X1's and WinMo devices, share with me and others your experiences, tips & tricks of using two highly competing OS's!
I don't think many people use Macs here...
I use my MarkSpace Missing Sync for Windows Mobile (http://www.markspace.com/) to sync Address Book and iCal with my X1. I tried SyncMate (the paid version), didn't like it, think it needed more development; one annoying thing it did was try to grab every USB device connected to my Mac. I've also got Parallels VM installed, so I can also use MS ActiveSync.
I don't worry too much about trying to sync with iTunes or iPhoto, just simply mount my X1 and transfer files using drag and drop - keep it simple.
I also use my X1 as a wireless broadband modem. I use OS X bluetooth DUN rather than a USB connection, works well.
I don't consider OS X and WM compete at all. In fact there's plenty of support around that they complement one and other nicely.
I've been totally anti-microsoft mac-head person for a long time... BUT I've been a huge fan of SE phones also for a equally long time.
I was thinking of getting a iPhone like everyone else, but there were so many features missing you'll get on a "regular" smartphone. And I was also a avid Palm user also in their pre-phone pda heyday. So it was just so logical go with X1.
Just flashed to 6.5 it got rid of so many annoying things I didn't like on 6.1. Mainly on UI side. And I love the superhackability of WM/HTC phones. You can do anything like with them. iPhones a different game.
Basically the keypoints for me were keyboard, console-emulators and expanpability/hackability. Actually I consider my X1 as a nice little xtra laptop to live alongside my MacBook Pro. Nowadays I don't drag my 17" inch along all the time as I can do all the things I need on the go with X1. And WM is a pretty straightforward and basic OS so I get along with it.
My mac talks and syncs pretty decently with X1 via Missing Sync. It's not perfect but enough for me. And mostly the regular usb transfer does the trick.
And after founding out xda-developers this has grown into a nice little hobby to tweak around with WM
I use itune agent to sync my itune music on pc with my x1 it works
ok another option is the program salling
both are made to sync non ipods/phones with itunes
but not sure if there are mac versions of them or other options for mac
Are you guys also irritated by OS X leaving invisble files on Windows devices? I'm guessing it's something that has a good function within OS X itself, but outside of OS X it just takes up space.
double post please delete
Hey all, I was using Missing Sync from MarkSpace worked great, although sometimes you might need to reboot both devices if recognisation is FAIL.
Anyway ran into some problems a while back with restoring my backups with some roms just failing after a restore, figured it mustve been a problem with a specific contact, so now have two different contact databases, my phone and my pc.

What do you mean? To backup or update your contactlists etc?
I just use a free copy of Syncmate, I only use it to backup contacts. Other stuff I just drop as a USB drive.

is it for me?

Hi,
I currently have an HD2...which I do like..however I don't really know anyone who dosn't always harp on about Android.
I used to have an iphone, which has the most amazing interface and screen and thousands and thousands of apps..but..wasn't any good as a business phone.
so, I went back to my beloved WM (had an orbit, TouchPro, diamond, HD, and now HD2) which I like because of how easy it is to customise (something which is virtually impossible with the iphone). I hated Sense so I've always used SPB Mobileshell to give me the perfect screen layout (not avilable on android I know)
however, the HD2 (Leo) isn't without it's problems and the screen often drives me mad.
so...is the Nexus the phone for me?
Does it do all the business functions I need (full interface with exchange 2007 for example)? are there a growing number if apps available? can I read MS office documents?
oh..and when can I get it in the UK (sim free)
many thanks for your advice
Bluntly put, no.
Android is still very much an immature platform and, while exchange support is there, it's more of an afterthought than a feature (it's not even mentioned in release documentation).
Winmo has it's flaws, and we all know it, but we also know that (at least for us in the connected corporate world) either a blackberry but most ideally a winmo phone is the best, most reliable way to take your office with you.
Android is more of a consumer OS (it was aiming at Winmo's throat first, but since winmo pretty much undid itself, now it's going for mobile-osx), and I can tell you from using the dream that (and this is just recently with the 2.0 eclair build) that exchange support is there, but kind of shaky. Also, the options for viewing/editing office documents are very limited. There are apps that will do it, and there are better mail clients, but just the thought that Winmo includes it all out-of-the box. I think you're well suited with your HD2 (or maybe a less consumer-oriented device, I'd go for the omina or touch pro2)
perfect reply. Many thanks indeed!!
I'll stick with where I am right now then.
