need/want app to assign ringtones - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

After a hard reset and sync, all contacts needing/having custom ringtones need to be reassigned manually.
I'd like a simple app that could have contact names and ringtone filenames stored in an ini file that could run silent to apply the ringtone values from the ini file (if ini present) or create the inifile if ini not present
Does that make sense or seem useful?
version 2 might even do sounds and alert tones (wav)...

sms alert tones

hey, does anyone know where the Os stores the tones tht you can use for sms alerts?
i want to add my own to it but i cant see an option for it and was thinkin tht if i could add it to the folder then it might appear in the given list of tones?
cheers
All the sounds for the alerts are stored in the windows directory. If you convert your tones/songs to .wav format then you can use them for sms, alarm clock and other alerts. keep them short though. I think you may have to run the 'add ringtone' program and select the files. You can run ringtones from anywhere in the windows folder but if you use .wma files they need to go directly in to the windows\Rings folder else they wont be detected. well thats what i found anyway.
You are supposed to add a ringtone to \Windows\Rings with any file explorer.
WM2003 supports these: .WAV .WMA .MID(the most compact one)
People, who use "Add Ringtone" have nothing to do at this site, it's xda-developers.com! Joking!
Yes you are correct but you dont need to put them in the Rings folder unless it is a .wma file. I find the midi type tones better cos i dont hear true tones as well. Maybe im deaf!
dir \Windows has so many files, that it takes years to open it and even more to find something there! That's why I prefer \Windows\Rings.
PS: Don't worry, you're not alone being deaf in this world!
i'd like to see somebody using a wma file as sms notification
i've only been able to add wma for phone rings not sms's

I'm trying to change my alarm sound on my XDA this doesn't work at all.
Lets stay in the defaults Rings Alarm2,Alarm3 <-- if I select one of those it keeps using the default ring Alarm1.
I've tried to edit the registry as well no luck, I don't wanna use any Alarm prog my Rom is Wm2003 4.0.1.16 cooked and if I select any other wav file from the \windows folder it just keep using the default one  has anyone fixed this bug?
I can't say i know the software for the xda1 but if you can't add alarm sounds which are .wav then why not just overwrite them? Just save your new sound as Alarm1.wav in the windows folder.

You cannot overwrite them bcz they are read only files thus they are in the Rom !? If you have a way to delete or edit or replace those files tell me

How to change SMS sound??

I found many posts how to change ringtone and allerts sound, never how to change SMS sound ??
Any ideas ??
Thanks for reply (I hate my sms sound)!!!
Finaly found that.
Settings->Sounds->Notifications->(Event change to sms
But this way you can only use wav files from Windows directory. I use PhoneAlarm 1.3 and store (and use for SMS) WMA melodies on Storage - very good.

you can use mp3 sounds for sms notification with ringo mobile. 8)
Here comes ...
By navigating links from this page (I think URL is correct) you can find info you need.
Convert the ringtones to WAV format, then put the WAV files in the \Windows folder. Then you can select them as SMS notification sound.

Thank you
you can also just copy .mp3 or .wav files to
\Application Data\Sounds
haven't tried .mid yet
Ringo Stinks...
Yuup you may choose Phone Alarm...
I used to use Ringo, but it sucks... it often to keep "silent" n no sound from my mp3 I ever chose.
thank you nuumuun. worked first try
found a way how to do it
Copy your files to:
Application Data\Sounds\
I copied BOTH MP3 AND MID files there and it worked!!!
I'm not sure but I think I read somewhere that you must make sure that the extension of the files are uppercase and for midi files it must be MID and not MIDI

Assigning own .wav file for new text messages

Hi - i can assign custom ringtones for incoming calls.. but not for text messages.
Anyone know how i can change this?
Thanks guys.
(Running on XDA mini S with ROM: 2.16.9.1 WWE)
Place the wav/mp3 etc you want assigning to an SMS tone in the Windows directory, these will then appear in the list for assigning to SMS/Alarms etc
i have tons of wavs in that directory that do not show up when i try to change the notification in Sound Notifications. Anyone know what im missing?
have u tried place the wav to \windows\rings\ ?
PS:the wav files should be within certain bitrates.
yup... if u do that it will work for incoming calls... but NOT FOR TEXT MESSAGES... still haven't figured out how to for texts
I've placed some MP3s in the Windows directory on the device and it works for SMS's. Not sure about wav files though.
how are you assigning the sms sounds? through "sounds and notifications"? cause if i place an mp3 in the windows directory, it does not show up as a selection. i assume it can only read .wav

Editing tones for messages

Hi there.
I`ve bought like 2 months ago an XDA mini and i would like to change the tones for recieving messages.i tried to add the ringtones but failed. Can u pls tell me how i can add new ringtones for incoming messages.
Thank you
I assume you are talking about Notification Sounds? If so, you can do this by adding your sound files to the \Windows directory then under Settings -> NOtification Sounds you can change each notification sound to your personal preference. If the sound file is in the \Windows directory, it should appear in the dropdown list.
i dont think it works...i guess ringtones for incoming calls you can change....

What?! You changed the one under "Messaging: New text message", right? What do you mean by doesn't work. It shows in the setting page but when you receive an SMS, it doesn't produce the sound it suppose to give. Or you are not able to provide your very own customized sound?
No i`ve added the ringtones in /Windows ... and when i want to set up notifications .... i can see those ringtones when i`m setting incoming calls ... but when i want to setup incoming messages ... the ringtone doesn`t appear in the subfolder where the ringtones should be.

yup exactly...me too...
Oh. Ok, trythis.
Copy one of the WAV files (into your PC) that you are able to see from in the list of choices in Notification->Messaging:New SMS
Right click on it, "Properties"->"Summary"->"Advance" (in some cases, you maybe already in Advance).
You should see the BitRate, AudioSampleSize, Channels, AudioSampleRate, AudioFormat, of the WAV file.
Now, your job is to encode your customised WAV file with the EXACT values (you can easily do that with the Sound Recorder within windows).
Copy your encoded WAV into Windows, you should able to see now (you shouldn't require soft resetting the device).
Ringtones - can be MP3/WAV
Notifications Sounds - can be WAV/MID - NOT MP3 !
That is the most commonley made mistake - MP3s cannot be used as Notification Sounds! Just save them as WAV and put the as previously described in the Windows Folder and you are good to go!
Attached you will find a WAV File that 100% works on a MDA Vario ( Wizard )
Matza, of the top of my head the wav file should be 16bit and 22000hz or somink like that...
in simple the Wav file must be PCM Wav at a reducded quality for it to be used as SMS Ringtone

Text message/e-mail alert tone

How do I change the sound that plays when I receive a text? Cheers!
Start, Settings, sounds & Notifications and then go down the list till you get txt and then email
I mean where do I put custom mp3s and mids so that I can choose them from that list?
my docs on ppc or make a folder called that on you sd card
YOu mean "My Documents"?
I put them there and they don't show up in the list under Sounds & Notifications.
You have to place an WAV file in your \Windows directory
Putting MP3 files in your /Windows/Ringer/ (or Ringers, cant remember) directory will make them available and selectable for notification sounds (for incoming calls, etc.)
for ringtones mp3's can be put in windows/rings folder. Or applied directly from any folder from the press and hold pop-up menu in fact.
But, they'll only be available for call alerts.
Interestingly the wizard, or perhaps it's a limitation of the o/s can only use wav files for sms, email, notficiation, alarm alerts.
These wav files need to be placed in the windows directory, then you can apply them in 'sounds and notifications'.
The strangest thing is that I can't seem to find any tool to make this work. It must not be hard to create a little app that lets you define notification events (i.e. play mp3 file) to things like new mail, new sms, alarms, etc...
