New to PDA/XDA's need alittle help .. - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

I recently got an O2 Stellar (aka Kaiser) and ive been playing with all of the today screens / apps posted here for the past day or 2, but one thing thats really puzzling me is alot of apps say Copy blabla.dll to Windows directory.
Well when i check out the folders on the phone via PC (USB) it shows me all the folders except Windows, so i cant do it that way, so i do it via the phone but it doesnt seem to let me Paste things into the directory via the phone itself.
So was wondering whats the easiest way to put files in the windows directory?
Sorry if thats a newbie question, new to this but im a quick learner

I believe you need to use a more high-powered file explorer type utility. Haven't used it myself but Total Commander is referred to a lot in the forums and I use Resco Explorer - the latter is certainly worth the small outlay to buy it.

Total Commander for now. Not too sure if you would use Resco's version to its full extent. Start with Total Commander and after that you can see if you are interested enough to use Resco. (For the Total Commander link please download the "ARM/XSCALE/
PXA" version not "MIPS/SH3" version.)

Ohh nice, that makes sense, thanks for links installing it now.
now i can experiment with more apps etc, no doubt ill break it soon
is there any other apps i really should have? like "Whenever i reset my PDA i "Always" install these!" (Total Commander seems to be one of the must haves)
theres some nice work done here i dont usually sign up to forums but this one was definitely worth doing.

Those that I ALWAYS install after every hard reset, you can google them.
1. System management groups:
Resco Explorer, SK Tools, SK Shortcut Manager, AE Button Plus, FTouchSL, Phone Weaver
2. Multimedia groups:
S2V, Conduit Pocket Player
3. Interface groups:
PointUI (highly recommended), Wisbar Advance, S2U2

Welcome!
I wish I were a mod so that this statement would mean more, but since your initial question has been answered, do you mind moving/making a new topic about "Must Have" items? Try some searching, too.
I'll list out a couple freeware goodies, which you should try out before you buy applications. I have Total Commander (way faster than Resco Explorer, I feel, although Resco is more user friendly), S2U2, S2P, S2V, PocketCM Contacts, PCMKeyboard, TouchPal keyboard, Oxios Memory, WM5torage, Palringo, and Opera Mini 4

About 25% of the apps I use below...

Thanks for the replys guys, think i have enough to sink my teeth into now
Azimuth21, i agree i should have made another thread but didnt want to spam the forum with noobness hehe, done some searching but its always the obvious ones that end up being missed out (like the explorer)
P.s
PointUI looks brilliant! will definitely check that out

Display filename extensions in File Explorer?

Hi there,
I have used Spb Pocket Plus in the past and one feature I really liked was that it tweaked the default File Explorer so that filename extensions are displayed.
I no longer use Pocket Plus but I really want to be able to see filename extensions. I have tried Total Commander as a replacement but it is not a seamless replacement. The same goes for Resco. I would prefer to avoid using additional software to save on space.
I assume that Spb must have simply tweaked the File Explorer application or WM2003SE simply by creating or amending a registry entry. Does anyone know how they do it? I'd really like to get this functionality back without having the overhead of Pocket Plus on my device.
You could use resco file explorer it will allow you to show the files extensions..

Can't you read? He specifically doesn't want to use Resco because again, it doesn't integrate with the File Explorer in the way that SPB Pocket Plus does.
I'll have a quick dig around in the registry for you, don't hold your breath as I'm not 100% sure what I'm looking for, but I'll have a look anyway, I might come across it (I kinda half-know what to look for, I'll definitely know what it is when I come across it )

Not had much luck so far, it must be a shell extension which P+ adds... I'll keep on doing some research, as I'd quite like it too.

Hi Peterw,
I do understand your point in space saving. Resco file-explorer combined with registry & ftp add-ons takes around 1Mb to install, but you can easily install it in the storage folder. Guess you know already that resco gives you much more than file-extensions only. Personally I like it, I know it's a matter of taste & maybe BIG Storage.
If I happen to stumble around a registry key to solve it, I'll let you know.

COMING SOON: Prodigy Explorer

Hi all,
I looked around and I decided to create an Explorer program, I thought it would be a simple task, but it was really hard and time consuming.
I saw many explorer programs around, the one that most of users choose is resco explorer which is really a good one, but its price is relatively high ($25) so I decided to create a program that has most of the functionality of resco but with much lower price. The program will also have multi-locale support.
My project is not yet complete, but I would like to show you some of my work and I would like to hear your suggestions and opinions about this peace of software.
When released, it will have a price of about $10-$14, a good price for all or at least for most of us.
One problem that has exhausted me is transfering files over bluetooth OBEX, I would be really grateful if you could guide me to resourses that will help me solve this issue, and if you really help, I will be sure to acknowledge your help in my program and will not forget you from free peices of software.
Regarding this problem (BT OBEX), I used some code that was implemented in this article:
http://www.developer.com/ws/palm/article.php/10946_3573636_3
but the sample program fails to disconnect from the destination device and I don't know why. please take a look at the sample program on the link below:
http://www.developer.com/img/2005/12/Obex.zip
Wish me success
Just two more pics
There's one which has most needed features (file, registry, FTP, 2-pane-view) and doesn't cost anything: Total Commander. My filemanager of choice ... not only on my Universal.
Cheers,
-mARKUS
This is the first time I see Total Commander, it is really a good program and it is powerful, but why the hell do people buy resco explorer when total commander is there?
Any major benifits of Resco over Total Commander?
It is really disappointing for me, I though I would get some $ for 4 months of hard-work
Regards
I think resco also has has some file / directory encryption options. As well as the ability to map network folders.
Anyway I see nothing there to justify 25$ while Total Commander is around.
Still, you may sell some copies if you find something unique to offer. TC doesn't seem to transfer files over BT (only IR) so if you get that working, and get the files directly to SD (that's the main problem with the built in explorer - it has to go through internal memory so you can't transfer big files over BT) you might have an edge.
One small suggestion: Make your plugin thinner or at least offer it as an option in settings. Big icons look nice but today screen is valuable space so many people don't like big plugins.
Oh, and if you think you had difficult time writing it so far - just wait till you get to protection and registration mechanism .
Good luck.
Little info
Greetings to all,
Total commander is a good eice of software but it has many lackings:
1. you cannot use it with key pad, it is not userfriendly.
2.Like levenum said it does not allow sending files via bluetooth.
3. It does not have many function like recyclebin and others that resco explorer give,
If you make something which has everything what resco have and more, then your software will rock.
regards,
Sharif
Thanks guys for encouraging me, I really need this.
I was really shocked to hear that there are freewares that implement my functionalities, anyway, The program picures above shows something I would like to call a 'basic version' of Prodigy Explorer.
I have far more powerful ideas that need tons of work and can make my program unique, but I don't know how much time I will need to complete this.
Originally, I planned to realease three versions:
-Basic, Professional, and Advanced.
The ideas in my head are not included neither in Resco nor in TC, so I might begin to work at that side --> something unique.
Regards,
Mohammad

May be you haven't used resco. Resco gives you most funtionality without using touchsreen, that is really addicting.
And Mohammad, i m a management student, If you will keep your price low approximately 10 dollar or low, it would hit it sells, people would prefer buying your software over resco and others. By keeping price low you will get more demand i.e, more buyer and eventually will increase the profit, rather than keeping price high and demand low. So keep in mind all those factor before you prepare your price.

Sharif
Hi,
Lets check some features about available explorer programs:
What do you think about implementing a:
Recycle Bin?
Encryption?
Compression?
How often do you use them?
Are they really neccessary?
Well, personally I've seen quite a few posts on other forums by people looking to encrypt / hide / lock with password specific directories so I think that's useful. (My self, I have nothing on my PPC that requires that)
Compression is always good but more important is the ability to open compressed files in common formats like zip and rar as various downloads, even in this forum are often in those formats. Total commander can show zip content but not always manages to extract it.
As for recycle bin, I think it has no place on PPC. If you must have it at least put it on storage card since internal memory is so precious.
But all of the above are just my opinions. You can always attach a pole question to this thread to see what features people want.
One thing i will like to see on every explorer is the MULTI-WINDOW like total commander implements. I use it more than resco cause that feature.
Im afraid I live in Argentina with no creditcard, so registering a 4 bucks program is more complicated than it sound. I expect to see a freeware version (perhaps with a nag screen or something like that on the start ). I will enjoy to be a betatester if you need one (i got a TyTN and can test it on that device)
Thanks all for your participation.
shagratt, Multi-Window is a very attractive feature and it is on my plan. Regarding the 'Freeware' thing, I am not sure right now about it, and I will really be interested in beta-testing my application but I guess it will take some time before I realease the first beta..

Mohammad

About to Get a Mogul...What Programs Should I Get?

There seems to be a ton of posters here who know a lot about the Mogul and phones/PDAs in general...so I figured I'd pose the question to you all.
I'd love suggestions for what I should download...so if possible, could you respond with answers to the following questions:
1) What program?
2) What does it do? Please state the purpose/usefulness.
3) How do I download and install it? Link to find the download?
4) What, if any, existing program will be unnecessary once I download it? And can that unnecessary program be deleted?
I've never had a PDA, so any and all suggestions are welcome. I'll be using the PDA predominantly for calls, web-surfing, and messaging.
Also keep in mind that I'm new to all of this, and I'm a complete moron...I don't understand a damned thing. So talk to me like I'm a 5-year-old. I don't know abbreviations like SMS or MMS, or whatever.
Thanks in advance, I appreciate you taking time out to help me.
Well one of the programs I use the most on my phone is The Core Media Player (TCPMP) it is by far the best media player for Pocket PC's and can play most file types. you can get more information from here, and if you want to download it just respond saying yes and ill post a link. Don't download it from the site as I have a newer version than on that site.

i hate to be the one to say it, but after seeing the views on this go up and no replies i'm just going to say what everyones been thinking. look around? theres hundreds of threads with stuff to download for your phone, you just have to look a little
Most of our WM devices are very similar. As such, pretty much everything that's been said before still applies, so check the wiki, where you should find many articles related to this conundrum.

It's fine if people don't want to respond, though. Life will go on. And some people have been nice enough to take time to explain stuff to me, so it's ok.

Here it is v.81, sorry it wouldn't let me upload to the site like normal so i put it on megaupload, to install it just download the file and copy it to your memory card or phone memory, then open it with file explorer on your phone and install it to either the device or memory card. Sprite Backup
Sprite Backup is a must! Even if you keep it connected to your ActivSync PC daily, it is good to have a baseline you can always restore to, and I'd suggest having it backup to your SD card, and rename one of them every few weeks so you have something to restore from in case it gets completely fragg'd.
Another one is Skyfire (Beta) mobile internet browser.
I'd also suggest you get Microsoft Reader or EReader so you can have pocket novels on your phone (it's a nice thing to have when you're waiting for something). Also, rip your DVD's to your PC and encode them to WMV format and your ActivSync can put them on your SD card...
All of these tricks are discussed here in the forum. Hope this helps.
I will just give titles of some of the apps that I use. Google them to find where and what they do.
PIM: PocketInformant
Wallet: CodeWalletPro 6
Geocaching: GeoScout
maps: Google Maps, Live Search
Bible: Bible Reader
Today Plugin: HHC Home Customizer (will download HTC home plugin)
Shell: SBP Mobile Shell v.2
Browser: Opera Mini
Regedit: PHM RegEdit
File: Resco File Explorer
Video: TCPMP
Navigation: TomTom7
There are a bunch of other little apps that just make life easy, go to Handango.com and find what you need your phone to do for you.

Forgive me guys...

I know you all hear this stuff every day, so at the risk of sounding like an idiot....
I have spent several days reading through all the countless hundreds of posts on ROM mods, tweaks, etc. and I find my head swimming! I read through all the FAQ and Newbie threads on the board, and I must admit that despite it all, I still have so much I do not understand. Let me try to be direct.
I have almost no experience with registry editing and the last time I did any it was so long ago, that I forgot how to do it. I have literally zero experience with Windows Mobile OS. What I need to know is:
If any of you were buying a Leo now, as I am about to do, where would you start? What are the top three things (for example) that I should do to get the most performance out of the device? Can the Leo be used "stock" and actually function? I have heard so much about the dreaded SMS bug, etc. that I hesitate to pull the trigger, so I am just looking for some feedback, so I can proceed with the most caution. I don't want to brick my Leo, so I prefer to stay on the safe side, but I willing to push the envelope if needed to gain functionality.
For the record, I am coming from a Symbian background, and I have actually hacked my 60v5 device, so I can learn, but Windows is not comfortable for me. I am a Mac User, but I do have XP installed on my Mac via Bootcamp partition.
All this ROM flashing stuff seems pretty complicated!
I was in the same boat as you are, long time since windows mobile.
first day or two took alot of info in.
best thing to do.
start using it, once you find a problem or desire a feture then come here, and most likely someone had asked for the same thing.
I used the stock TMO hd2 for a couple of days with no problems except when i ported over all my old phones files the lag caused by excessive texts stored under a contact made opening texts or editing details for that contact really slow. I archived all my old text messages using the myphone feature and deleted them from my phone - now no problems. All the other apps and features were excellent, so once I got used to the phone I felt 'ready' to take on some tweaks.
If you need to edit the registry direct to utilise a tweak (in the event of there not being a CAB for it or whatnot) then I used a program called TRE which works like regedit on your pc. just remember all the values given are in decimal unless stated otherwise. From the Leo hints n tips sticky I personally used tips 14, 56, 62, 63 for the camera modes and tips 36, 37, 39, 65, to boost overall performance.
Lastly, if you dont get a youtube app with your phone (probably the case if youre with tmobile) then installing it seperately will currently stop the camera album videos from playing due to file conflicts, tho the youtube app itself will work. A way around this is to use a tweak to fool opera into letting youtubes site recognise you have a flash enabled browser, from this thread and do without the youtube app so you can still play videos in the album view. It all depends on what youre wanting to get out of your phone, and how you plan to use its features. Ive managed to get by without needing to flash to a different rom.
Also 2 apps to work together that I find indespensible is myplayer and coreplayer (though you could get tcpmp or whatever its called as the free alternative to the latter) so I can watch catchup tv.
Hope this helps!
i was like that before as well, but im getting the hang of things now, just installed hspl so hopefully when a newer rom version comes out i will be installin this
Like you I came from Symbian and it is very different!
There are some basic things missing that will annoy you but for the most part it is fine.
Install BSB Tweaks, this program as solved alot of my annoyances.
IMO u should use Xannytech ROM cause at least the free adjustments are all included (BSB too) + it's quite beautiful and I found only one but not very annoying bug.
As explorer I still think the Resco Explorer is the best (with Registry Editor).
I think that's all u need.
I'm in the same boat having come from iphone, I have no idea how it all works. I am trying to get my head around this registry editing at the moment and deciding whether or not to take the plunge :-/
The phone does work out of the box, but coming from an iphone I want to install a few apps/cabs such as converter, ebay etc. The guys on here have been very helpful indeed, although sometimes I need things explaining in numpty terms becasue I don't understand all the tech terms
I am from iphone background however.
many things that we are doing with the cabs and tweaks on this phone are not avalible with the iphone.
for example LED notification
task manager
task switcher.
camera \ video tweaks
player tweaks
etc

You do have a file explorer there already (very basic) , and a lot of people use total commander. TC is not very finger friendly, but you can edit the look of it in preferences.
I just got my phone last week and this is my first wm phone. I have been spending all my free time searching for apps and tweeks for my hd2 and found that the first thing to do is check out the offical uppdates on htc homepage.
After that i would suggest BsB tweeks and ram sweeper, Chainfire driver patch 1.1, NetC Framework 3.5 Resco explorer/regeditor, coreplayer and opera mini.
Gl hf!

You want the pocket pc version.
There are free file explorers (Total Commander) and registry editors (PHMEdit I think is one), do a search on the Leo parent forums for "file explorer" etc. or look on google, alternatively install a custom rom, some of which are bundled with the software

BsB Tweaks lets you configure some/most of the stuff in the Leo Hints and Tips forum sticky post without you having to go through the registry to do it yourself. Pretty slick. Also does some stuff that isn't in the sticky.
Can someone please give me a link to the BsB Tweaks?
I had artemis before my HD2, and never head of this page until i got my HD2.
Very easy is to install/upgrade ROM connect active sync, double clik on ROM file and 10 min later a new ROM is installed. I have not tried any of the Custom ROMs from here. Because i Like my Danish ROM.

Wife's new Tilt2

Hello everyone.
My wife recently picked up a Tilt2 and is migrating from her Palm TX.
She is looking for a replacement for Pocket Money, Pocket Quicken, and something else I've forgotten the name of but she's looking at SPB Pocket Plus, Pocket Finance Diary lite (from mobile9.com), and CryptoWallet, none of which did I find listed in Apps thread.
If anyone has used these apps are they not worth the cost? Are there any simular apps that perform better for less or free?
For games she is looking at Happy Lines, Uno (it is in the Apps list), and Matching Hearts; and would love other recommendations for any Bejeweled-like games. She also would like a music player which has a random play feature. I see several listed in the Apps thread but didnt research enough yet to see which has that.
Thanks for any and all help or comments.

Hey Popa, welcome to this corner of the forums
The only question you asked that I can help with is the media player..I can tell you that the built-in HTC music player has a random play option, and it's a nice simple option if she doesn't need much flexibility. However, most any of the commonly used 3rd-party players (coreplayer, TCPMP, nitrogen, etc) certainly can do that as well, so you just have to gauge what else is important in a media player for her. WMP is also built-in of course, and also not half-bad for basic use.
One more thing to help you out...I'd highly recommend running the two cabs I've attached on her new phone. They change some settings in window's memory management that free up memory much faster when apps and processes are done using it...they'll save you a lot of headache when she would have come to you complaining because her new toy is running like molasses (which could still happen...keeping this phone running smoothly especially regarding memory can be a real challenge). The 3rd cab is up to you, but it's a very helpful utility written just for the Tilt2 called CrudScraper that lets you rip out a bunch of the stock apps (only the ones you choose) and crap that AT&T was nice enough to load it up with for you. It's not a cab though, just run the .exe from her SD card and it's self-explanatory from there. Let us know if you need instructions on running the cabs too.
Good luck! I'm sure you'll get some answers to your other questions soon...but if not, you might want to post in the general windows section of the xda forum since most of those programs will work on a lot more models than just the TP2, and you might get more exposure and response that way
SPB Pocket Plus works fine and syncs with Money. I liked the old money client you used to get better but it gets the job done.

Hmm, are you sure you're not confusing Pocket Plus with something else (e.g. SPB Finance)? Pocket Plus is more of a system utility, that doesn't sync with anything. Besides, not all features of Pocket Plus are compatible with WM6.5, so that's something else to take into account.

The 3rd cab is up to you, but it's a very helpful utility written just for the Tilt2 called CrudScraper that lets you rip out a bunch of the stock apps (only the ones you choose) and crap that AT&T was nice enough to load it up with for you. It's not a cab though, just run the .exe from her SD card and it's self-explanatory from

Install them both to the device, they're very small, and then once you do that you can delete the cab if you want...though I recommend keeping a copy on the SD card of any cabs that you use, so you can reapply them easily if you ever hard-reset. These automatically run in the background once installed, no need to manually start anything.

I have been running these cabs for a few weeks now. it seems they stop working after a while. I have noticed my mem usage was in 65-70% again and even after a soft reset, stil up there. Only thing that works is reinstalling the SSK TP2 cab then miraculously back down to 49%. Am i missing something on keeping these running in the bckgrnd? i mean i dont mind reinstalling but feel kinda silly doing it over and over.
Thanks
Joe
