What exactly is Hard SPL - Wing, P4350 General

Okay, I'm definitely new to this, so I've been doing a ton of reading to learn all I can about roms, etc. I notice that everyone says if you use hard spl, you are less likely of bricking your device. I'm not sure I understand quite how it works, when to do it, what it does, etc. I'm running the stock rom, and I see that I need to do a hard flash first, and then follow the noob's guide to flashing. I've searched the forum, and I've downloaded the latest version of hardsplicev7...but before I do anything, any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys...

How to Hard-SPL
Are there any detailed instructions available on how to Hard-SPL? I've tried the various threads in xda but can't seem to get anywhere. Obviously, I'm doing something wrong ... looking for detailed instructions with all the files or maybe perhaps a video showing the steps.
Thanks in advance

ilikepu....it turns out, after a lot of reading and studying, you don't need to hard spl to run open touch. I am HAPPY to say, I finally installed open touch v3.0 biggie, and I am blown away at how much better it is than the stock rom. I feel like a kid at Christmas!
hohoeyo, there are some threads with info on how to hard-spl.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332413&highlight=hard+spl
or
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358225

you should try 4.0 i like it a lot

What's the difference between the 3.0 and 4.0??? Also, it looks like 4.0 doesn't have the touchflo and voice command. It's either one, without the other, or vice-versa

very confused....

hey,
in advance, sorry about that if this is a serious noob question. i searched and i read numerous threads but i'm still really confused.
basically, i'm getting a wizard at christmas, which has WM5 on it. I've had little look around, and the general (and somewhat obvious) concensus is that WM6 (or WWE or whatever) is way better. I'm really confused about the whole G3 G4 thing and the whole updating ROM things. I've read guides/tutorials and looked at a load of the Wiki stuff, but i'm still really confused.
Is it possible that someone might give me a bit of a really broken down idea (not step-by-step tutorial) as to updating the phone from WM5 to WM6. Like what is involved? length of time taken? what essentially i need to do? etc. If people can tell me what to update etc, like the radio thing and such, i'm more than happy to search for the guides and tutorials on this forum. the guides are excellently done and very easy to follow, but i'm still lost about what means what?
thanks,
t
Damned Noobs!
Ok, the for idiots version (don't worry, I once needed the for idiots version too)--
G3 Wizard= when you boot the phone and get a bunch of numbers on the initial screen it will say x.xx
G4 Wizard= x.xx.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (joking, but it will have more decimals!)
The radio depends on location...I'm in Cali, I run 2.47 with the fix cab and have no issues...however...2.19 IS the recommended radio for the WM6 roms.
THERE IS NO SINGLE BEST ROM!! They all rock. The kitchen you choose is based on what fits YOU. I run Jaguar, I love it. But I like minimal apps, but not a vanilla rom. Read each kitchen posting carefully. Some come with all kinds of bells and whistles, some are minimal, some are really vanilla! Read what the bugs are, and if fixes have been posted.
Read Dr.P's tutorial at least 3 times on unlocking your Wiz (it is stickied).
You will want a few "must have" apps. Search lokiwiz, wst, and maybe even omap clock. Once CID/SIM unlocked, always unlocked. But before you flash a cooked rom, YOU MUST BE CID/SIM UNLOCKED!
When you flash a rom, you are not freeballing with your jacket open...flashing your rom simply means switching it out. It is recommended to flash back to a stock rom before trying out a new kitchen. This keeps the new install fresh and clean. Search for the stock rom. The search button is your friend. A lot of folks use the Tmo 2.26 stock rom.
And finally, invest in Sprite backup or a similar app. It makes things so much easier if you fubar ****. So always back your Wizard up.
And again, remember, read the wiki's and stickies until your eyes bleed. It is always best to know your device before playing around with it. What mods you do, you do at your own risk!
And an FYI, I don't honestly know if WM6 is better than WM5, but as the WM6's are all custom kitchens, they are a hell of a lot more fun!!
PS- the longest time taken is always in the initial modding. You MUST unlock your phone first...that will take a good 20 minutes at least. A typical rom flash takes roughly 10 minutes. A radio only flash takes 3 minutes...once you have done the initial work...you will find that if you want to change roms, you'll need to devote a whole 20 minutes---flash a stock rom, then flash a custom creation.

How confusing is it round here?

Sorry, this is not really a serious dig but I feel I should make you all aware (tounge in cheek) how bloody confusing everything is around here.
I spent the last 12 hours searching for all the info required to update an athena that'll be arriving on my door step some time today but I'm still no closer than I was after my first 30 mins searching.
I've found 2 different unlockers but can't find anything about which is required or best. Just loads of posts from people bricking their devices.
I've chosen which ROM I want to go for but it does not include the radio.
I've just found the thread containing radio 1.50 but this wasn't sticky'd or anywhere near the top of the search results.
What order do I do everything in? The ROM thread says radio first but is this before or after unlocking?
I'm sure I'll suss all this out no problem once my device is in hand but why can't everything be done in one hit (unlock, radio & ROM) like every other rom I've used. And a nice set of instructions as you go.
I appreaciate some radio's work better for some and not others but the ROM "recommends" 1.50 so why not include it? Ditto for the unlock.
Please don't take this the wrong way I'm just worried how other people may find it round here. I'm not a novice. I've had just about every HTC device going over the last 6 years, all have been unlocked, flashed with different radios and roms and with each one you'll find all you need to know in one place (usually in a read me.txt of each rom or stickied at the top of the forum) but I don't ever remember being so confused as I am now and if I'm confused then god knows what a newbe would make of it all.
This is the Unlocker you want to use first:
Just backup your data, take some time, fully charge your device, take out the SD Card an follow the instructions:
(Turn off all energy save settings on your computer)
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Athena/Unlocker/AthenaUnlocker.zip
This is the newest version of the Black Touch Rom:
http://athenaproject.logontek.com/AP3.0Final/AP Dual 3.0.rar
An here are the Addons (optional):
http://athenaproject.logontek.com/AP3.0Final/AP Dual 3.0 ADDONS.rar
Finally update your Radio:
http://rapidshare.com/files/52469650/Radio_version_1.50.00.00.zip
worth mentioning that the radio upgrade hard resets your device so install your addons and stuff after you've done it.
In a nutshell though what he said.
Just check if your device is x7501 or x7500 as there were two unlockers previously.
If I remember correctly this is all explained in first post of unlocker thread. (its a while since I checked)
I agree that things are widely scattered here, but after keeping up on daily posts in the Athena sub-forums for a while it all becomes clear. As mud on some days... (grin).
Thanks mojo, I had those exact files unzipped and ready to go.
Like I said guys, it's not me I'm worried about I wasn't asking for help as such... its those newb's.
Anyway, don't take it the wrong way was just a bit of constructive critisisum.
P.S. Dam postie didn't show after all that
Thanks guys.
This post was the exact thing I was looking for. I'm going to flash my Advantage right now!!!!!!
OK I did it! Was a little touch and go there for a few minutes, but I got it. Damn I was scared for a few minutes, thought I f'ed up a expensive PPC.
Congratulations cib911.
I've literally just got it off the post man, opened the box and started modding
All good so far, unlocked, 1.50 radio and AP Dual ROM.
Just gotta get used to this amazing screen... humm now which dpi is best???
I keep mine on 96 all the time.
I suggest such help should be definitely moved to wiki.

As the whole point of a wiki is that anyone can edit and add to it, feel free to go ahead and do just that.

Actually, I also couldn't find the stuff that I need in the wiki. Don't get me wrong guys, I came from the Atom group. Wiki and everything is considerably better. I wish there's something we can do to make it better. Frankly, we are only a few among all PPC users so technically, it should be easier to put some order into things. Thanks!

I'm going to enjoy my newly acquired device as it is for sometime before I upgrade to PK ROM. Otherwise, I have no basis for comparison. Untill now, I've only got wktask and realVGA installed.
Anyway, is there any speed difference between the different version of PK ROM?
I'd need some time to digest all the posts in this forum before making this big decision. Don't want to brick my darling.
Looking at the post earlier posted, I just downloaded and was about to push began, and now I have to figure out do I have the right unlocker for my device. I have the Unlocked x7501 Advantage!
I downloaded the unlocker from the earlier post....am I good?
I was just about to begin!
Let me add to this....I want to keep my same radio from the HTC original ROM....Do I need to do steps 2 and 3 in the unlocking process or can I skip that?
Thanks Dannyboy! I needed this thread!
And thank you mojo2000, that was good order and clarity! I cant wait to flash!
concerning my post about the missing file in rapidshare, it's now up and working.

Newbie puzzled!

Hi guys!
I'm not easily puzzled by terms and stuff to do to tweak your hardware, but since I'm all new to WM, I am trying to make sense of how to go ahead with running a custom ROM. I have a TC with original UK ROM.
First, obviously I should make a dump of my currently installed ROM. I am just very unsure how I achieve that?
Second, I have figured out that I need to Hard-SPL to get rid of certificate-checking in de device to run ROMs.
Third, I need to flash a custom ROM ... at this point I can have my way with the device, and do what I want. Also, not clear how I do that, unfortunately
Offcourse, at some point I will want to return my device for maintenance, warranty or maybe even sell it ... at which point I need to un-do the HardSPL hack, and reflash with the original image ... How would I go about that?
I've searched the forum, and I couldn't find it unfortunately, maybe, since I am a newbie, I missed a term to search for, or maybe I completely misunderstood
Any hints are very welcome!

All of your questions had been answered a number of times already in this forum so there's only one thing you can do, Search and you will find the answers.
Hi. I'm actually searching for the same stuff and haven't found some all-in-one topic yet.
Don't mind "kutonglupa", i'm beginning to think he's a bot on this forum. Even though you say (i did it too) that you used the search function he can only come with one response: "use the search".
I'll keep searching too.
Try this for starters: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356895
You probably know this already
Hard-spl flash:
Download hard-spl
Plug the usb cable to your pda.
Run RomUpdateUtiliy on PC.
PDA will display tricolour.
You will be asked REPLUG you usb cable. DO IT!
After a few second Hard-spl will be upgraded!
Rom flash:
Download the rom
Step manually to bootloader (press and hold camera button and press reset)
You will get a tricolor screen.
Plug the usb cable to your pda
Start RomUpdateUtiliy.exe (or Rom.exe) on you Pc.
Pda screen will be grey, you will see the process indicator.
When it is 100%, update is finished.
Radio-rom flash
The same as rom flash above, just download and use the radio-rom.
Back to offical rom + radio:
The same as rom flash above, just download and use the offical rom!
Back to original spl:
At this time no working method as I know...

Thanks
Newbie thanks for opening this thread,
it give a very good overview what to really do for flashing the Rom without having to read through XX Pages.
Unfortunately I have still have not found a right link on how to backup my orginal O² German ROM.
What do I need for this just in case I do need to send in the Polaris?
Is the software specifc for the Polaris?
Look forward for a quick note.
Cheers
Rar9
Be careful with what you try from the Kaiser forum in terms of tweaks though, I've read people had problems using them on the Polaris. see the Polaris tips and tricks thread for details

Thanks dude. You're welcome!
I was reading now in the whole forum for about two whole afternoons, and I have to say that I still have the same questions as the threadstarter.
These questions answered once and for all, this thread would be worth pinning in my opinion, because complete newbies don't know where to find the necessary information in this really huge forum.
For the case someone wants to come up again with "use search", I will try to make clear, what problems of newbies (including me) are:
For example: I now already found three different lists of HTC-cab-files in the forum, one here in the polaris-section, one in the general section, a half one in the wiki... often without version-info, and so don't really know whats the actual one...
so far so confusing, I tried to search for the answers onto the exact same questions as the threadstarter posted. in the wiki, there is simply nothing on WM6, no tools, no real how-to, nothing a newbie can use.
Only thing I could understand from wiki, is that cooking an own ROM, needs to have a unix(-like) OS, and even there, I'm not sure if it is still actual for WM6.
Reading a bit around, I then was glad to at least find out that the devices are locked for non-certified ROMs, and that one needs to do that HardSPL.
Well that's as far as I could get until now, and I really don't know much more than before. Pretty unsatisfactory...
So could anyone make (or point to) a little overview of what one needs to know about dumping, flashing WM6-ROMs, and before flashing, what one needs to "cook" an own ROM.
Perhaps I was imagining this way to easy, but I thought about nLite/vLite-style applications for customizing ROMs?! Probably you'll all laugh at me, but I would very much appreciate taking me serious, because I want to learn how to do it. Simply don't want to lose time searching the forum for information, that don't help me advance...
thanks a lot
Eric
EDIT:
well I found this, which I can only recommend to all newbies: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356895
with this, questions of flashing are all answered,
but what tools one needs for dumping, flashing, editing ROMs and all of the remaining questions mentioned above remain open

[Q] Need some thorough guidance

Hey Guys,
Sorry for this post already ha. I am not familiar with this phone i am trying to help my brother out. The wiki and a lot of general info seems fairly outdated. Is this all still the most efficient way of doing things? I have not played around with the phone yet so i am going to ask some probably dumb questions. I have an SGS phone which everything seems much easier on.
The phone i need help with is the Mytouch3g 3.5mm (I believe this is the 32A from what i have read)
My question is after rooting can i use rom manager for recovery and to put a new rom on preferably the cyanogen froyo rom. I believe is listed.
If not is there any chance someone could walk me through the process. I have read up but I have not seen a step by step to getting a Rom fully installed and in the rom areas i see a lot about changing radio and such stuff.
If i could get a PM or post or even link to where i am referring to that would be great. Also how does one go about wiping this device before changing mess. Alright thank you so much for your time.

[Q] Custom ROM upgrade

This past week I installed Android 2.2 on my 1024 HTC HD2 (T-Mobile US) using the Video Tutorial by Tech Burrow and FAQs. I used the Android NAND ROM linked under the video. Everything is working ok and I've been reading the forum and debugging for the past few days...
*this is the first time I've done any type of software modification for phones
Today I clicked on the "NAND Bible" post and the "CleanDROID v2.55" is looking like a better option since I don't use Facebook and all that other stuff that comes preinstalled. I'd be happy to dump all the bells and whistles for something cleaner and faster, with more disk space. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10675863
On the Wiki page for HD2 it says "Try not to flash Custom ROMs unless they say that they're definitely compatible with the 1024LEO, or You'll be sorry!"
My Questions:
1) Is this ROM safe for my phone?
2) If so, is it worth it to perform this upgrade? I'm not familiar with all the technical specs, and don't want to "fix something that ain't broke."
3) If so, for install can I just follow #3 of the Guide [For Newbs]?
Many thanks!
Note as said by a members siggy
If you don't want to void your warranty, you're visiting the wrong site.
I don't know if it is safe as I can't understand the coding to linux. but if you can, his source should be stated and you can check it to see if it is safe.
worth the upgrade isn't something we can tell you for we know not of your current status. E.g what works and what doesn't work for you.
I don't know what is step 3 of the guide. But if you know how to install, then install.
Note your questions really don't even need a thread for, these could be done by searching the forums through the search button or even manually. So next time, do a little thinking for yourself first, it helps your brain from rotting. No harsh feelings.
Hmm I've already installed a ROM so not really worried about voiding my warranty at this point.. more worried about bricking my phone..
Well if you had done even more reading, you'd know HSPL is a software prevention of bricking your device. So the only way to brick your device now is through hardware.

Hey mate the best rom for you if you like sense is the core droid rom look in nand builds. if your looking for gingerbread without sense i would say ultimate droid. but please read before flashing through dft or flashing through clock work mod. and only way your bricking the phone is if you flash wrong radio or rom to it. both of the roms i stated are fine for tmous hd2's have fun modding your hd2 and welcome to xda
Thanks Rotary, will check those out.
