SPB Mobile shell Looks amazing - Shift General

I just installed SPB Mobile shell 2 on the shift and I have to say it looks amazing. I didn't really like the original Today screen as it was too dark and boring.
Question: Is there a way to access the original weather application without having the old today screen on?

can you post a screenshot of the new today screen?
thanks

Sorry, not sure how to do screen capture of the shift. The today screen is nothing new, you can see what it looks like on the SPB Web Site, but what I was meaning was it just looks great on the shift, I have it install on my touch dual and it great software but the shifts big screen just makes it look really impressive.

just download a screen capture from the web, there are many available. Heres one:
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.mobi/download-capsure-v1-0.html

I have agree the new 2.0 mobile shell is awsome on large screen of the shift. I have been using since this forum fist showed us how to get access to the full WM6. The only reason I didn't offer it as suggestion is its size. I installed both the Mobile Shell and Pocket Plus. After that there isn't much space left for other applications. I had to forget about installing office and limited my email downloads to just 3 days and no attachments. I also can only keep one or two ebooks on it before I get warnings about space.
To me it is worth it and I think the 2.0 Mobile Shell in portrait mode is even better.

Hi,
why both Mobile Shell and Pocket Plus? What does Pocket Plus Mobile Shell cannot do?
I use SPB diary and Pocket Plus? Is Mobile Plus an alternative for both programs and how much space does it Mobile Plus take?
Thanks.
S.

check out the spb site and read a bit. p+ and mob shell are two different apps with two diff functions

They do have some overlap but the main reasons I installed both was- Mobile for the "now" screen and the SPB menu that lets you use your fingers to manage WM6 much like a iphone only better. Pocket plus for the advance "X" button for closing and minizing apps, screen rotation, enhanced IE and a bunch of other stuff.

Hi,
and thanks for the information. Can you or someone else tell me how much memory the Mobile Shell uses?
This was the first question in this thread, asked by Seal and I ask it again:
Is there a way to access the original weather application without having the old today screen on?
Does anyone know if this was answered somewhere in the forum?
Thanks!
S.

Hi,
nice pictures of the program.
Still would like to know how much memory the Mobile Shell devours.

thanks for the pictures but it doesn't seem to be running on a shift, isn't it ? it seems to be a 240x320 resolution and not 640x480 .. I wanted to see how it looks in a higher resolution, because google is my friend and so I have already seen screenshots of the app, but not the way it looks on the shift.

It doesnt look anything like that on mine! The icons on the top line wouldnt show, so I found the spbmenu.exe in the spb program dirs, and made a shortcut and put it in startup. Now, when I launch the device, it automatically launches the spbmenu and it looks fantastic.
Well worth installing IMO.

Don't know about how memory it uses. SPB products ares free trial downloads with 15 day demo try it and see. Then you can let us know.
The other question about the orginal weather app is not a question about SPB which is the subject of this thread. It is question about snapvue and modifing/opening snapvue. If I remember correctly from reading the posts in this forum snapvue will be one of the things the shift project may look at.

Well, well, well, it really did not cross my mind that it was so difficult to answer my question for the memory used by the program.
Thanks!
S.

settembrini, you might get your results faster by using your imagination rather than nagging on others not helping you out. ;-) It took me 3 seconds to go to spbsoftwarehouse.com and 1 (one) click to see the size on device for mobile shell
heres the link by the way
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/mobileshell/?en

Hi and thanks,
I really did not mean to nag. And isn't it rather the exception and not the rule that you can find information about the "size on the device"?
Thanks again.
S.

if something is important to you, just look around the web, google is your friend

How are you guys customizing your today screens?

I know you can download different today plug-ins, and i know about VisBar and such, but I don't see how your today screens look so different from mine (after looking at various 'today screen' threads).
My screen is just several horizontal lines, with the usual "no new messages", "active tasts", etc, and a couple of plugins.
I see people's screens with a completely different layout.
Cheers for any replies

Thanks for the link, very helpful.
How do you get rid of only the bottom toolbar in WM5? I downloaded the program that other people had used, but I could only get rid of the top bar (which i'd prefer to keep), and not the bottom one.
Cheers
matheprat: If you're referring to the program ToggleToday, I haven't released it yet for WM5, but it's coming very soon.

If you need an alternative, try Wisbar Desktop Advance.
V
Note: Wisbar 2 or desktop is very very laggy
Use PPX instead if you want better speed, its just as good as WisDesktop.
This is the skin I m currently using
Does PPX work on WM5? Looking on their website it doesn't mention specific compatibility, but has anyone got it runniung satisfactorily?
Cheers,
Fin
Yes, I forgot to mention PPX. It takes quite a bit of headscratching to get it set up, but it works well in the end. Never tried it on WM5.

I'm still looking for a alternative interface for my phone to operate more easily with my fingers instead of my stylus.
It's so hard to quickly find a contact in my contact list while on a bike, in my car, etc since the scrollbar is like 3 pixels wide. Or to lock the phone or close an application, the icons are to frigging small
Not that I have big hands, rather small for a guy even but still...
Any suggestions?
matheprat: not sure when it'll be released, when I get time!
I'm working on too many other things as well, it's really just when I get a few minutes to work on each bit. Hopefully release fairly soon, as I said, WM5 is done, I need to join it to my old WM2003 code and then check it against a companion today plugin I wrote. Quite a bit of behind the scenes stuff involved

I didn't mean to come accross pushy, sorry if I did. I know there's a lot of work needed in developing programs, and no doubt it will be worth it when it is released.
Many thanks
matheprat: no offence taken at all, didn't think you were being pushy.
ToggleToday was one of the first programs I ever wrote, and then I bought myself a Universal to start development on, but accidently wrote VJBigPhone and that kept me busy for a month or so
Now VJBigPhone has gone quiet, I'm finally getting around to re-writing ToggleToday! It's a messy program to write, particularly for dual WM5/WM2003 compatibility, but the basic code is written. Now I'm wrapping it together and will work on a GUI for it.

The MOST stable Today Information plugin eva
By the way, can someone recommend the most stable Today Information Plugin?
I was using latest PowerLevel plugin by ScaryBear but it has lots of memory allocation/deallocation problems. Then I switched to simple 15Kb "TodaysInfo" plugin by Lou Terrailloune (v1.7) and it is quite stable but it has significant rendering delays when rotating screen. So, what is the most stable/fastest one to show battery/memory levels and perhaps it can inform you when your battery charge completed (aka PowerLevel/AudioInformer)?
Thanx!!!
Sounds good - any chance of a link?

Hi all,
I have two questions about themes:
1. When using skins with the above cool tool, and use other themes, do the themes remove skin customizations? I want to use .tsk themes and keep the background picture and taskbar skins.
2. I have downloaded over 500 themes from the internet, anybody knows a FREE utility that changes the theme automatically and periodically?? I want to be surprised everyday with an new cool theme
Thanks all,
Mohammad

Waiting for my XDA mini S with 1GB miniSD. Dying to see it in my hands ( I have been waiting for 40 days and there still 14 days to wait, this really sucks)
When you change the theme, the wisbar skins stay the same, so no worry's there. 500 themes !!! wow that's keen.
I think there maybe a theme changer but can't recall where = google it you have some time on your hands
Hi I have a question..
will installing and using this skin in particular, slowing down the performance a bit?
thank you
Some people with athe cingular 8125 have reported significant slowdowns but with me only a slight slowdown - better if you dont use the wisbar cascading start menu. There is a bit of a memory leak though, but a soft reset once a day solves this. Chris Mckay the developer of this hopes to have a better increased performance version of this soon.
yea i think so too, it takes slightly longer for me to open some apps too.

Great stuff! I use Wisbar Advance 2 but I dont have the skin!

Anyone know a Today Plug in that can do this?

I was wondering if there is a today plug in that will allow me to write or type my own message and show up on my today screen permantly (and allows me to change it through settings)?
Doesnt thebuild in tasks plugin work for you?? Or you want a more "post-it" notes kinda feel??
I just want like one line on my today screen to write whatever I want....for example......like the owner informations with phone number is 2 lines.....I want to disable that and write my own information in one line.....doesn't have to be owner info....just anything I want.....it's kinda hard to explain.....and I want to to be able to use chinese characters to write too.....

tbito, this was exactly what i was thinking of recommending to kiru...and i can confirm that it works with wm2005. i'm using a mio a701 and this is one of my plugins.
Yes, NotesToday is one of my staples. I think it's very useful.
I tweaked the default skin slightly to allow me to minimise it to a dot, (just above the weather plugin)

V
hey vijay, very interesting the way you made it look so small and efficient! mind sharing it? interesting little application; although i don't use it as much it's good as a quick scratch pad for all occasions...
Someone just emailed me about the skin.
I've found a copy on my ftp - I haven't used the plugin for a while, because I'm still migrating my setup to WM5 and deciding on new plugins.
But hopefully this is the skin shown:
http://www.vijay555.com/vj/!tools/notestodayskin/notestoday_skin_new.zip
I modified the skin to take almost no room, but be stylus selectable, but particularly selectable with the dpad. I can't remember if I had to edit the registry, but basically you can switch minimised and maximised mode by scrolling down the today screen with the dpad and clicking enter. It'll shrink/expand accordingly
V
Hi Vijay,
I Guess this is off topic. But on one of the screenshots your have an extra blue bar underneath the start button. With two arrow vertical up anddown at the start and sms, phone, and bluetooth etc. in it. I also saw some sort of profiles program with the same arrows in a later screenshot. with seems like profiles to me.
Are those programs the same and if yes, which program is it? I'm tried several programs Pocket Zen phone and WM Profiles. But wasn't happy because the vibrate function didn't work properly on my wizard.
Let me know, thanks.
Cheers
Shah
Shah, the blue bar near the top in my 18 August 2005 screenshots is an early version of my PhoneAlarm skin. This was refined into the one you can see in my 5 April 2006 screenshot, at the top of the screen (being used via my VJToggleToday program).
This is used to select profiles (where the normal "Vibrate" icon is at the top of the screen, clicking this brings a drop down menu with my profiles, Work, Home, Silent, FlightMode)
PhoneAlarm is excellent, generally. Profiles are a very basic feature on any phone, and it's mindboggling that it's not a standard feature, but I like PhoneAlarm, and Bruce, the author (you can also see my slightly hacked version of AlarmToday as well in the screenshots).
My 5 April 2006 screenshot also shows claunch at the bottom (apologies for the stupid icons, I lost some icons when I changed phones), being used to change PhoneAlarm profiles with my thumb. So I can make calls/send SMS using VJPhoneTools, change profiles (PhoneAlarm), and launch selected apps all from the same plugin.
V
Vijay, do you not find PhoneAlarm is resource-heavy?
Also, is that skin on your home page? (I've had a look and can't see it)

Hi Guys,
First: THANKS YOU vijay555 for giving me the skin files! (I'll mail you later with my findings, regarding VGA and landscape use)

Thanks in advance.
Cheers!
Puzom:
I may have the skins at home. Frankly, it's easy to write your own. The standard skins are nothing exciting!
Webreaper:
My phonealarm skin is towards the end of the first post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=27331&highlight=vjtoggletoday
I've used PhoneAlarm for pretty much my whole year on XDA devs, and never found it to be a problem on resources. There are simpler ways of doing what it does, but it's useful, and gives me easy control of profiles etc. Bruce is filling it up with stuff I can't imagine needing, like cell based profiles etc, but I'm happy with the basics - notifications, mail count, profiles etc.
PhoneAlarm or a similar app is essential IMHO for effective use of the phone.
I've had trouble with AlarmToday since upgrading to WM5, but the old WM2003 version was flawless and very useful too.
V
Thanks Vijay. Your skin looks the simplest and neatest I've seen.
I really liked the idea of the cell-based profiles, in particular for things like enabling wifi for when I'm at home, but disabling it when I'm at work. Unfortunately, my house and office are both on the same cell.

very Nice and simple , what today plugins are u using,
This is mine at 192 dpi mode.
The meter bar is from pBar. This is also used for application switching, comm manager, and limited application launching.
The time and date comes from registry edit, and appears on all application, so that I need not come back to today screen to see the date and time.
The little circle with rotation mark is the dictionary lookup, and appears on internet explorer or word, where I may need help with the definition of any word.
I need to watch my data quota, so this status must be visible. Same for key stock investment.
The main application launcher is iLauncher.
Screen rotation is done with hardware button, so that I can still do it when browsing the net in full screen.

Yes, I agree, WA3 beta 4 works well with my Dopod U1000. Athena's top specs should have no problem with it.
WM6 combined with WA3 is just like upgrading Windows XP to Windows Vista.
Here's my screen on RealVGA
Anyone know how to center the wallpaper image, instead of it tiling? (If you look at the wallpaper, you will see that it repeats the top on the bottom strip!)
And thanks for MyMobiler link!

Thanks, mack! I might try it again though. However, if it comes down to choosing between speed of the device and anything else, speed wins for me, always.

Good tip for people with the 6800, or any 320 X 240 and 240 X 320 screens, in google just type in the serch bar,
"320 x 240" and "240 X 320" for landscape and portrait pics..
lets see, visible, i have htc home, of course, and thats about it. the buttons are done with wisbar desktop and the menues and task manager are all wisebar advanced. power button is shutxp. battery meter at the top is vistahide battery gauge. i think that might sum it up?

Wow -- I really like that fact that you told us everything that you had loaded too. That really helps being new and such. Thanks.
Ok .. here is mine.
Basically using the HTC Home Customizer with HTC HomeW6.
I have installed the HTX X-button but not really sure I like it. Open to other recommendations.
Also, I have the Stroths-Codyppc LedKiller 3.1, but it doesnt always seem to work -- real strange. Seems like once I sync up, it deactivates or something. Open to a better suggestion here too.
Edit: Actually the LEDKiller 3.1 does work as it is suppose to. I didn't realize that it would start blinking again if I had a vx msg out there. Ahh, still learning.
Here are the links for the tab theme and customizer (thanks to Mr Nur for these):

My today screen looks identical to yours so I won't bother posting a pic.
Regarding your task manager, I fully suggest wktask. It is customizable like crazy. For instance, I have mine set up so that a downward swoop closes all open apps. In one swoop!!! Tell me that's not convenient.

Wow, thank's for the feedback guy's, keep up the good work lol,

No you can't..sorry lol..
do you think you could run me through setting up wisbar desktop with that vista theme? I tried once, but just ended up locking up my phone and having to reinstall to be able to do anything.
I would be more than happy to help anyone with Wisbar, either advance or desktop. I have become quite fond of the programs. I will tell you that if you are using any of the new roms of new radios, for some reason wisbar is a little glitchy (they are slow to update their software). I used the vista theme for quite a while, had the windows, C:, sidebar, everything. But its a HUGE memory hog. As much as it was cool to show people that I could open a window on my "desktop", it wasnt worth having to wait 10 seconds to reply to a text message because the phone was loading so slow. I am actually using the vista theme right now on wisbar. Thats what the button on the bottom is. The Vista theme (original, not the crappy knockoff ones) is three pages, the one you see on mine, a desktop one, and a sidebar one. I have just removed the last two. If you are still interested, let me know. I have the original files for the vista theme, i can upload it and let you know how to set it up.
And Mr. Nur, I dont really know what you are trying to say in reply to the question about HTC home. The HTC home on my screen is the EXACT same one thats on your screen. I can customize it using HTC customizer if i want to and I have the 6 tab option as well (i just like only 5 of the tabs though.) So I guess i dont really understand the question. I am running that setup with HTC Home?
Win Ce Cab Manager and wallpaper tsks
Does anyone know how to make Win Ce Cab Manager change your tsk files. Or change the wall paper. What i'm tryin to do is install a cab that'll change my wall paper for me.
The only thing I wan't people to do when they see the thread is download that program and post 2 pics of their phone, i'm just hosting a thread so anyone can show people what there phone look's like after putting time into it..
Mine's not anything special at the moment because I just flashed to the new ROM this weekend and I haven't gotten around to setting it up all the way yet. I will probably not do too much customizing until I get a ROM I want to settle on.
