I Really Love This Computer - Shift General

Every day that goes by I love it more and more. In the beginning I thought that maybe I would not keep it and continue using my Sony UX .. Windows mobile makes all the difference .... I had only WM6 running .. over 24 hours and still had 2 power bars .. Nice !!

Questions about WinMo Pro on the Shift

Hi I know a couple people here stated they have WinMo Pro 6 running on the "SnapVue" portion of the Shift. Excuse me if I explained that wrong. My question is what resolution does it run in? 640x480, 800x480, 320x240? And Can it access the phone portion(assuming from comments that it will in fact have voice)?
I'm really getting excited about the Shift since people are saying that in fact can run full blown Windows Mobile Pro. Why HTC didn't include/market that from the beginning is beyond me. It would TOTALLY seperate the Shift from any other UMPC on the market. Instead they aren't marketing it and it sits in a pile of other boring UMPC's. HTC's marketing practices as of late are really questionable. If it does have voice I'm crossing my fingers there is an earpiece built in. I doubt it but I'm hoping. Yes I know I'll look like an uber nerd using it that way but I can't stand BT headsets and barely talk on my devices that much anyway. Thanks.
Hello juiceppc,
I'm not sure at 100% about what I will say.. but I think that the resoluion in SnapVue is 640*480 (there are 2 black areas at each side of SnapVue).
For the phone portion ... humm .. it's difficult to know, but we will try the best to have it ! It's sure that we will be able to read SMS... but nothing is sure about receiving and giving calls.. we have to wait for the final version of the Shift to test.
Just stay tune in this forum... and you will have your answer... As Soon As Possible !

hi
i realy like the Shift, but if can run wm6 full ... I'm excited!
there is a problem: the 2 operating system must use the some devices in the same time (bt, wifi, etc).
for browse on the net, or for chat, the wm6 is enough, and is not necessary to run vista.
and if htc release the win xp drivers, the battery life can be bigger.
but i cant find anywhere a documented review about shift....(everybody is happpy, the shift is the best...) no phone, no gps, the image cant rotate, no wm6, no xp drivers...
i think the comunity can resolve this problem but the feedback is verry low.
the device is not released .. so stop to anticipate everything ... we will try to make the Shift the best device EVER... but we need to get one to test everything on it !
I don't care about XP (it's a completely horrible O.S. .. and Vista is 10000 times better) but for the rest, we ALL want GPS, PHONE and full WM6 .. even without that, the SHIFT is an innovative device.. and is much better than every other device... so WAIT and you'll see.
why buy a HTC Shift?
I have a Dopod U1000, its the best device ever. I have a Sony TZ notebook as well. I was thinking why bother to buy the HTC Shift?
- Battery life 2 hours Vs Sony 11 hours
- it runs on a paralysed WM6 that is probably not going to be that useful Vs Dopod U1000
- the screen resolution is poor Vs Sony beautiful crystal clear screen
- HTC Shift probably runs on hard disk Vs Sony runs on flash memory,
- This is the first PC by HTC Vs Sony many years of R&D experience
I have purchased the Samsung Q1 as well as the small Sony UMPC before. Both proof to be quite useless. When I bring them out. I have to wait a few minutes for it to boot up. After using for just awhile the battery goes flat. You will be left wondering why do u ever bother to bring such a heavy device around. Trust me folks battery life is important. If you buy the HTC Shift after a month the battery life drops to probably 1 hour. In addition, the screen size is way too small to run Windows. I am very sure there will be many second hand models in ebay after 2 weeks of launching
Pls think twice..

Screen Size way too small for Vista? How about OQO and other 5 inch UMPC? It's even smaller..

I totally disagree with your comment :
- Battery life 2 hours Vs Sony 11 hours
First .. I bet that the shift can be used about 5 days without using Windows Vista (only SnapVue or WM6). And the Sony is twice the price of the Shift ... ergh!!!!
- it runs on a paralysed WM6 that is probably not going to be that useful Vs Dopod U1000
You seem to be paralysed when talking about it ... the WM6 will be sufficiently well working (even without removing SnapVue) because of ability to install Cab .. and I believe that Full WM6 will be easy to have. The Dopod doesn't have Windows Vista ... and having WM5 or even WM6 on the Dopod is exactly the same of having SnapVue on the Shift.
- the screen resolution is poor Vs Sony beautiful crystal clear screen
I can put the Shift in my pocket ...but not the Sony. 7" is the perfect resolution for me (I have tried 2 Shifts and I really like the screen size and the Shift keyboard). At home I plug a VGA cable .. and here we go !
- HTC Shift probably runs on hard disk Vs Sony runs on flash memory,
The sony runs on flash memory? MMh maybe... but it's twice the price of the shift... and unable to put it in the pocket... bad !
- This is the first PC by HTC Vs Sony many years of R&D experience
I have tried 2 Shifts.. and it was working perfectly, as fast as I want ..... so I don't care about the years of R&D experience of Sony.
Here's my thoughts... I'm not trying to put you down, or to say that you are wrong .. but features depends on the way you want to use it , and you use devices. We are talking about 3 completely different devices.... and I don't believe that any other "released" device can change my opinion that the Shift is the only good device on the market right now (because of 2 CPU and 2 OS).
How about we keep our heads about us people and stay objective.
Comparing a Sony TZ to the shift is a useless comparison. One is a notebook, the other an umpc. Each serves a different purpose for different people and different tasks.
Koala, if you can put the shift in your pocket than I would hate to see your sense of fashion. Im sorry I dont doubt you could shove the shift into your pocket but show some decorum....theres better umpcs to shove down there that would look less ridiculous.
Remember people, different tasks, different people = different devices. For me ill probably have to seriously look at the Shift if WM can be made practical, if the GPS can be enabled (remember the P3600 ppl).
Having owned an X7500 I found it to be a great device, very handy however there are some tasks WinMo just can do as well as full Windows. The excellent, connectivity, battery life, and quick responsiveness of WinMo will be ideal for me with the option to flick it to Vista at a whim for those times when im away from my desk and need to do work on the move. If it has GPS and phone functions can be enabled than thats just a bonus

same for me ... it's not ridiculous to put it in my pocket because it looks like if my pocket was empty ... nobody can see that I have something in my pocket... and when I have a bag with me, it will be in my bag .. but I can visit friends without having a bag and without having to look like "coming to work".
htc shift
I just bought the htc shift a few days ago. There are several problems.
1. I unlocked the full WM6, the problem is that file explorer cannot read the sd card. As such I have to install all the applications on the internal memory. This is not very good as it prompts me that the internal memory is very low.
2. Another problem is the contrast in snapvue. After reseting snapvue, the standard high contrast comes out again. U cannnot lower he backlight.
3. the sync between wm6 and the pc works sometimes. I use USB tool. Most often it does not work and is very slow.
Overall the built quality is good but it still cannot replace my dopod u1000

<---- Concerned About the Shift Project Like Many Others

Yo, what's the deal? I am a newbie to the world of the HTC Shift and these forums, so maybe I should just keep my mouth shut, but I gotta say things are looking pretty grim around here. I've been through most of this forum, search endlessly, but now I have to speak up for the good of the community. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think I'm that much of a newb.
I will be purchasing a Shift very soon and have big hopes for it. One way or another I'm going to get everything to work on it seamlessly; whether that involves me learning how to do it all myself from scratch (and I mean from scratch), waiting patiently for someone else to figure it out, or waiting not so patiently and paying someone to figure it out quickly.
I'd like to donate to the project, but the way things are managed around these forums, I'm hesitant. Especially after coming from the MyDellMini forums, where they have stickies, guides, and very frequent updates for everything. On here, I go back and forth, or in circles trying to figure out what you've got working, and looking at dates doesn't help because they most often just stop without definitive answers. I mean, can the thing make calls or not?! I've seen a YouTube video of one making a call. If so, why isn't the wiki updated?
I don't know anyone on here, but if you're like most people you probably have other obligations and such, which is perfectly understandable. But it would be decent if you could at least let the community know and maybe handoff to a successor.
The things that you're doing really do have immense implications in my mind. I mean how many all-in-one smartnetvertiblesphones are out there? Whose going to be making one anytime soon? They're all too skittish. Apple sure as heck ain't because they're too busy in the "entertainment" realm.
All I'm trying to get at is, let's get it together. From what I've read so far, it seems like you were on a good path. If you need some help with anything, such as organizing these forums, I'm certainly willing to obliged. And my apologies if I have offended; I really do respect your brilliance.

Hi there newbie ,
Firstly , u r assured that the shift definitely can make n receive normal gsm phone calls through speaker phone now ( hopefully using bluetooth and wired earplug can be hacked physically or digitally in the near future though ) and u can also send n receive yr sms on the windows mobile side . if my shift cant do these , i will eat my shift piece by piece n upload the video at you tube ! ha ha ha dont worry bro , it's not like dell or any other netbook , our shift is pre netbook era and it's on a highest umpc platform , everything of our shift hardware is superior and the best from htc if u compare all htc devices , especially it's touch screen - the best there is .
secondly , the shift forum has less updates and developments because the units sold worldwide is so small if u compare to eeepc , dell and other top selling netbooks , in my country - Malaysia , i heard Sis distirbuter only sold about 200 pieces total and it has stop selling locally , so if the owners and forum community is so very small , please be very , very , very patient with anything new development of the shift . u can say that we are a niche community but our developers and gurus are the best around i think , u will be astounded by their unselfish sharing their hard work n sleepless nights with the world without any money reward at all , just purely shift passion . thank you to all you masters out there
should u buy a shift n not sure how good or suitable it's gonna be for u , then i would suggest that u buy a second hand used unit so that if u find the shift is not yr kind and the xda shift forum is nothing great , then just sell it off at a 30% loss - as an experience and owing the shift for a short while , this is because nobody except u can be satisfied by yr own investment , at least 30% losses is smaller than a full priced new unit .
anyway , the shift works fine for me n many others , it's very special umpc and will be useful for another 2 years - i think , until other new technology comes out to supersedes the shift n it's shortcomings . many thanks for reading , i wish u best rgds - jimmunsw enjoy yr shift everyone ...
Awesome Reply
Thank you fir taking the time to write such a thorough reply. You answered my concerns directly. I personally am 99.9% sure the Shift is THE device for me. I can't wait to get my hands on one and make use of all the hard work and brilliance that has been contributed in this forum thus far. It should be on my doorstep tomorrow. Then I will be one of the few, the proud, the brave shift owners in the world. As far as updates, I plan on compiling an outline of all the possible hacks and future hacks for myself. If it is useful I'll be glad to pass it along. Thanks again everyone!
There seems to be a sudden influx of new members wanting to or already buying the Shift. THat's great. Shift has been discontinued and I think it's a 1 off for a long long time to come.
The next hybrid Win7/WinMo device ??
Any other Windows/WindowsMobile hybrid known to anyone on this planet ?
HTC has made a tremendous fukup releasing the Shift as crippled. They would
surely have sold 5 times more if the device had been marketed as a UMPC with a PDA inside to make calls and do navigation stuff. All in one for real....
They hurried to release a canadion version with GPS working but it was too late.
Shift was postponed how many times ?
Interesting

I have not been watching the UMPC market, well at least not on the Windows side. I have been obsessed with the rumored Apple tablet, but after paying attention for a little while, I now realize that Apple is really just trying to build on the success of the iPod and not release productivity oriented devices. And, yeah, you really gotta wonder who runs these companies sometimes. I mean I can understand not manufacturing a device because you don't think the market is there, but I can't understand manufacturing a device that has all the components built in, but are locked down because you think the market isn't there.
Currently I have a triple booting Dell Mini 9 and an iPhone 3Gs, but I don't like having two devices and I can't draw on the Mini 9, which is what I really am aiming to do. I'm trying to publis a comic book entirely digitally. So, that's why I really want a Shift. I know it isn't super powerful, but it's powerful enough for on the go sketching and script writing.
I'm really looking forward to the Courier, but who knows if that's even real? So in the meantime, until computer designers get their heads out of their BLEEPS, long live hacking existing devices like the Shift!!

Cool. You just wait for Microsoft's own Tablet, this will definately beat crap out of Apple's, if Apple decides to release.

Dear TRGwithFeet ,
Thks for the kind reply , things got to watch out when u get yr new shift is :-
1) the middle grill for exhaust fan at the bottom of yr shift , dont press it with yr fingers - it will break a line off the grille because it is very thin steel material and hold up by a center plastic vertical line , mine and putrawanz is also broken , one of Htc manufacturing defects ( they say it will not and cannot be broken if u dont touch it there ! wtheck ! )
2) battery life is actually very good , if u r living in the year 2000 ! u may need to use yr power adapter ( it is the same model as eeepc 1000 ) more often than other laptops and it is very hot at the peak of battery charging , if u go out with yr shift often , maybe consider a external battery pack of additional 3 - 4 hours of battery juice , or go get mugen extended battery with hump back battery cover - that will give u additional 2.6 times of yr actual shift battery life . also try get a cigarrete socket lighter to charge yr shift while u parked yr car ( 12v 3a only - no higher or u will fry yr shift ok ! ) with yr car engine STOPPED , ignition key current on only mode . just in case u know .
3) try using outdoor with gps , the screen looks ok if compare to others of same 7 inch screen , also put in a 32gb or 64gb sd card for more storage memory , but test it out to see if it can be fully detected n used before u pay because not all brands is usable especially using microsd to sd adapters !
4) do not cover or closed the fan suction in port at below right side ( near sd card slot ) as the heat builds up rapidly , maybe motherboard will auto shutdown when reached 70 degree centigrades ! after that it may never wakes up again ! ha ha ha
5) lastly if u want to upgrade yr shift 40gb to bigger hdd or faster ssd , pls read all posts and see you tube because there r many types hdd n ssd , some can be used and many cant be used , back up everything u can and be extreme caution when u open up yr shift , be very patient . Btw it will null yr warranty if u do so inside the 12months u hv bought it .
For yr sketching and script writing usages , i m not sure about it , never use that , but pls share with us all yr experiences and suggestions of yr actual working with yr shift .
Again thks for reading this , enjoy yr shift - jimmunsw
Great post, thanks for the info, ill add it to the library! I didnt know about the car charging, and i am gonna be charging mine up mostly in the car! How come the engine has to be off? Is it because of the voltage spikes?
Awesome!
Jimmunsw,
Thanks for all that info. It's really good stuff because it's the type of info you can only learn over time while really using the device. I'll be able to better care for my Shift because of it. Thanks.
Vinokirk,
I just noticed that you posted the library a few days before I started this thread. Man I feel like a turd now. I guess it was just me. I've been having bad luck with search engines lately or too stupid to think up the best keywords. Thanks for all your work!
Hi there ,
OK , i did try charging my shift while driving once , i think because my country is tropical all year round - day time can be around 35 degree celcius hot , after driving and charging for about 25 minutes , my shift was very hot - shows 55 degree c , as i on xp side to see the display indicated , but i was cruising on the highway , no power surge at all , almost constant , so i think u can still charge but u got to look at the display every minute or so as naturally u r worried to fry yr shift , so if u dare to try it out all the time and every time without constant checking on yr shift , i guess u can give us yr report then on actual charging n driving . anyway in the long run it is not safe if u r using oem chargers , original htc car chargers - i m not sure there is one provided .
the other thing like i posted too is if u r putting on the screen protector that comes with the box , it is good but after 1 year or more , when u hv scratch marks n lines just like mine n if u hv taken out this screen protector , then be prepared to scratch out the glue residue unless u can use a correct chemical cleaner to wipe it off , otherwise i scratched it out with my finger nails , took me about 10 hours plus ... i dare not use any thinner or other cleaner as i m not sure of the result , changing a screen in my place cost about usd350/- .
if u r doing a lot of hours of work on yr shift , u can do like normal laptop , plug in power charger , on yr shift , then pull out battery , it still can run , that way yr battery lifespan will last longer , but crocoach may make home there if u r not careful ! hah !
thks for reading , best rgds - jimmunsw
great advice
these are really great stuff advices, exactly what;s most important. I've also broken the greed very gentile in the middle of the back side and was dumbfounded what to do about it. used superglur not super solution!
as for the overheating it happens often but it starts normally in five min after...
as for the car charger i wonder where i could find itas i'm from 3rd world country, but some1 said here that ANY 12 V charger without transformer can do the trick i guess that's not true? what's the current directly from caR Battery 3A or more?
There're CAR INVERTERS available- they produce 220V AC current from car lighter socket. It seems stupid to go back and forth dc-ac -dc transforming and dissipating power, but it sounds shift fry proof what do you think guys?
Have any1 of you got used to shift keyboard? I make many mistakes, can you get accustomed to 10 finger typing like with normal size one?
Eee pc charger?
Hey bud
I thought you said the asus eee pc charger worked?
I ordered one for my shift and the tip won't fit...
Thanks

How long have you been using Mega?

this is my first HTC phone, take sometime to decide because i heard the battery died quickly. However, im from thailand and right now i see many people are getting rid of their mega here, some even bought for only few months. Maybe they are looking for a new android or win 7.
Would like to ask member here, is there any more than a year user and any of you are thinking about replacing? why?
I have Mega about 1 year. It´s good phone, quick, but i miss 2 things:
g sensor
video hardware acceleration - so you can´t run touchlo3d
qvga display isn´t problem, maybe wqvga or wvga will be better.
and battery live is one day (from 6am to 11pm)
about 6 months for me...sometimes I love it sometimes I hate it.
like mine has a tendency to just lock up for no reason.....at that point I hate it.
my wife has one also and i dont think shre likes it much but she has only had it a month and has never really used WM6 before so give it time.
yes battery life (for me at least) is terrible but then I do spend hours a day messing with it, customizing it and I have a lot of tweaks and programmes installed which obviously don't help. I don't mind though as I just plug it into my PC every night when I go to bed and away I go again, no big deal
in short I love my Mega but it does have it moments still
got it since May this year.
+ points
Thin and compact
Very very light for a smartphone
Durable - I've dropped it a few times and there wasn't any problem. There was once it flew out of my pocket while I was cycling. I was very very surprised that it only had a small nick
WM6.5 is very customizable.
GPS is lightning on this thing, I compared it to my Garmin 255, my Garmin actually took longer time to get hold of any signals. (probably bcos of 3G triagulation?)
Max Volume is very loud, nice.
- points
Can sometimes be very slow, this could be WM's problem.
No accelerometer, this means no portrait-landscape auto change (might no be a bad thing)
No graphics accelerator
QVGA, it's pretty small but it's what I want (a compact phone)
Typing SMS can take a long time to get used to (especially using QWERTY)
Overall it's quite a fun phone to have. Mostly because I love to tweak and to change stuff on my phone. It's what I feel a good phone for 1st time Touchscreen phone users.
battery life can go for 1.5 days on standby. if you use it all the time, the shortest I had was 10 hours.
been using mega for 3 months now. only 2 things i hate about mega were no front camera so no video calls, and no 3d accelerator so no touchflo3d and 3D games. but other than that, i'm loving this phone.
hello
i have a mega for about a year. works pretty well. yeah, me also missing g sensor, and the video hardware acceleration.
battery? still works pretty well, about two days in a low-moderate usage ( calls, sms, 5-10 youtube clips).

[Q] Quick general info about different HD2 ports

Hi,
I'm standing in front of a quick decision of whether or not buy an HD2, have to give a quick answer.
I have done a quick search and found out hat there are several options to get rid of the stock WM6.5:
Nand wp7;
Nand android (sense hd or cm7);
SD android;
Dual boot wp7 and SD android.
Is that all? Another question is how is the general battery life?
I have an HTC desire and I've configured it so well that my wife wants to have it to replace her phone. So my question here is that if someone can give me some general info on what status these options are at right now. Which one do you think is more mature than others? I'd like to have a rather stable build and I personally prefer nand android coz I have good experience with desire and I am familiar with the customization.
I can do the mods myself later, but I have to decide very soon if I'd buy an HD2 from a friend, under time stress I cannot get an overview very fast...
Thank you guys for understanding!
Typed with my Desire.
First of all, if the price is right no matter what you're planning to do with it, the hd2 is an awesome device! It has been a long time since I have kept a phone for this long, me being a die hard htc modder, I find myself not needing to do much modding after I went nand back in january 6th, I love my phone and I'm planning on using it the full 22 months on my TMO contract until I can get an upgrade.
Now you're gonna get a one sided opinion from me since I hate windows phone 7, I can only tell you about my android experiences with my hd2.
I started to use dual boot sd android builds back in late october last year and I found that with a bit of tweaking I had a build that I could use every day and with the hot reboot option I totally stopped booting into windows mobile 6.5 unless I was gonna make some changes in my sd card. even when I was on sd card builds I got a decent battery life, around 10 to 14 hrs of moderate to heavy use, and now I'm running nand cyanogenmod7 android 2.3 and I unplug my phone around 3am to go to work and I still have about 15 to 20% around 8pm.
I'm sure you can tweak it to your hearts desire and make it run like a beast.
Now I don't know if you're a skilled phone modder/flasher but it's quite easy for everything to be done. I've been modding phones for a long time and it's a no brainer to me when it comes to phone flashing. Now you got to ask yourself this question, do I want to have a phone capable of running 5 different OS and have the capability of modifying it like no other phone I've owned before?
Now on the stability part of your question, it all depends on what you're looking for , a sense build, cyanogenmod, or miui. Depending who you talk to , they'll tell you their build is the most stable and it's perfect, meaning there's a lot of stable builds for the hd2, and there's a lot of developer support, so if there's an issue, a solution will be around the corner. So if you like the phone and it's within your price range then you wont regret it.
Is that all? I don't think many other phones can run that many OS's.
But yeah its a beast. Most if not all the NAND ROM's are stable now and they're just improving as the days go on. If you're getting the HD2 for cheap and giving your wife your desire it would be well worth it. You could show off the fancy new Sense too.
Oh and XDA app might say I'm on a N1 but I'm actually on a very stable Gingerbread ROM.

On a HD2 ofcourse lol.

If you love to tweak, try out new stuff, explore, then this is your phone sent down from the heavens. Performance is great in every aspect, good enough for normal use. However it is non comparable to a true android device flashed with a custom rom and tweaked. Battery is okie. On normal use you could prolly get two days worth. However normal daily use meaning 45 mins of talkng/texting/email, 1 hr of internet, 30 mins of music, 30 mins of videos/games and then the rest on standby.
Now if you're looking for something that just works great, then get a true android phone, it'll save you the reading since you already know how to operate android phones and it'll run better than the HD2.

This is the reply I most agreed with. It's the most versatile phone and most moddable... but if you're just looking to run android, a native phone will give you better, more stable performance when properly rooted and modded, and you will get better battery life out of a native phone. The android port on android gets good standby time, so if you don't use you phone much and it's usually on standby, you can get 2-3 days out of it. But it will only last about 3 hours of straight use... even less with some games or processor intensive apps. Surfing the web or using xda app will eat your battery up in about 3 hours, while with my brothers stock galaxy s phone with a similar sized battery, I will get double that, at least. The thing is, android is a port on the HD2, so the drivers used are not always the best and are usually based off of drivers meant for other devices.
But if you like modding and hacking your phone, and you want to dual boot wp7 and android, and can deal with the occasional bug or problem, and can deal with the bad battery life while using the phone, the HD2 is a great phone. I wouldn't trade it for any other phone out right now... but I dualboot wp7 and android, and like them both equally and couldn't decide which os I wanted if I had to pick another phone. And to think I originally bought this phone because it had winmo6.5... now I don't even have that OS on my phone!
Oh, another difference between the HD2 and a native android phone is that with the HD2 you only get 65,000 colors on the screen and only 2-point multitouch which can be buggy... with a native android phone you have something like 4million colors and newer android phones usually have true multitouch, which is more than 2 points. So you might get color banding on your screen with some launchers or apps on the HD2, and apps that use multitouch may have problems.
Many people who use android exclusively are looking to switch to native android phones, especially with the next gen phones coming out. But for the price that you can get the HD2, it can make a great android phone. So if you have the money to spare and just want android, I'd get one of the next generation android phones when they're released or get a DesireHD or something native if you need a phone now. But if you're on a budget, or love to play with phones, or want to dual-boot, then the HD2 is perfect.
Sorry for such a long. dragged on post. Tired right now, and kept thinkingof more things to add.
Thanks all you guys!
I think most of you are satisfied with your HD2.

I think I can handle the tweaks pretty well.
It seems that one can find a smooth build or ROM without big difficulty. But is the battery drain that bad? Three hours of constant use? I also read some other posts that say their battery can last about 10 hours with heavy use... I'm a little bit confused.
My Desire has a standby of more than 2 days with moderate use. With constant use is in any case more than 12 hours...
3 hours depends on what you're doing. Eg. Listening music and playing games will prolly eat it up fast enough for maybe 3 hours or later, depends on whether the game is CPU and GPU intensive. If say your watching flash videos, you can expect prolly 3-4 hours also. but just surfing internet, I'd say 4-6, listening to music on speaker 5-6 , on headphones about 7-8, (both listening to music on standby), yeah pretty much that.

I think when people say heavy use they are saying using it often, but not constantly on. If you have the screen constantly on and use it, the battery drain very quickly. When people make descriptions of heavy, moderate or light use, everyone means something different, so its hard to know what that means... but with constant use, the battery will drain in a few hours. That's where you really see the difference with the port on the hd2 and a native device. A native phone will get at least 6-8 hours of constant use usually. But the HD2 will drain quickly while you have screen on and web browsing or gaming, etc.
I've noticed a lot of people will like to exaggerate to try to prove their HD2 is as good as a native phone, but if you look around, most will admit that with constant web browsing or activity where the screen is on and in use, the phone only lasts 3-4 hours, maybe less with games. Personally I think the HD2 is better than a native android phone because of the ability to run wp7 also, and I have a spare battery I carry with me, and a big external battery I can take with me if I know I won't have anywhere to charge my battery.
Also, if you use a bluetooth headset, leaving bluetooth on really drains battery a lot during standby... the bluetooth driver for the HD2 android really needs to be worked on.
Thanks a lot!
So far you guys persuaded me.
I think I'll take the deal and give HD2 a try.
Typed with my Desire.

Have fun... I'm sure you'll like it. All the stuff you can do with it kinda makes up for the bad battery life. You'll learn to conserve it, and it's not difficult carrying an extra battery. It gets addictive flashing your phone and updating all the time. It can become very time-consuming if you let it.
Good luck.

[Q] Windows 8 on Samsung XE700t1a

I have decided to buy a Samsung XE700t1a for my birthday to replace my aging original Acer Aspire One netbook. I know the Samsung comes with Windows 7 and it is possible to install the developers test version of Windows 8 on it. I do however have a few questions and as there is no forum section for the Samsung XE700t1a, ill have to ask here!
1) As Windows 8 hasnt officially been released yet, If I install it, will I be missing drivers/functions? Is it better to use Win7 until Win8 is released?
2) Does anyone know if its possible to replaces the 64GB/128GB SSD harddrive in the Samsung XE700t1a with something bigger in the future?
3) Is it possible to buy HDMI --> VGA adaptors? (the samsung comes with HDMI, but my university uses VGA cables for projectors) and will Win8 support this at the moment or will I have to wait?
4) Have I been a complete n00b and is there a better tablet out there? (was going for the acer Iconia, but the hardware in the Samsung is just better! I want it to last a good few years like my netbook has)
I cant wait to use Win8 as i have been using WP7 on my HD2 since it first came out! Cant wait to have a tablet that looks like my phone!
Realistically, you're better off waiting at this point until proper Win8 tabs are released around Q4 this year. Hardware, specs, battery life etc will all likely be better than any current W7 device.
1) Samsung has their own guide to installing W8CP on their site: http://www.samsung.com/global/windowspreview/ so it should mostly work. But don't forget, W8 is still BETA, therefore there may still be problems with the OS...
2) Yes, but it isn't easy or straightforwards see here
3) Jeez, learn to google! Yes, but it won't work for rights-protected content like movies.
4) Yes the Transformer Prime Infinity
Seriously, if you want a Win8 tab, you're better off waiting...
With Win 8 CP built in drivers, and the couple of new ones on the Samsung site that was linked, everything works great. The only thing that does not work is the Wacom digitiser driver for the pen..no biggie for me at the moment, personally.
It all depends what what you are looking for. Win 7 works great on the slate. Maybe you should consider dual booting until you decide? Certainly do not delete the recovery partition...that that way if you don't like it you can go right back to Win 7 with no drama.

Thanks for you quick reply!
1) I was using W7 and WP7 well before they were released, im happy to put up with bugs and glitches
2) Thanks for the link, Im hoping to buy the 64GB version and put something alot bigger in it
3) Google doesnt work in China, so thanks for checking for me. I dont need to watch movies, just show my powerpoints
4) Thanks for the heads up with the Transformer Prime Infinity, It looks really nice! I think I prefer the idea of a whole PC inside a slate and as the Samsung is upgradable it should last for another 5 years like my netbook did!
jasonkruys: I saw in your signature that you have the Samsung that im looking at. How have you found it? W8 problems? Office 2010 problems? Tested any games?
Many Thanks guys
Whats wrong with the Netbook , I also have one but I got rid of W7 it slowed the system down too much , try installing Kubuntu ,its lightening fast , I also have the Iconia (a500) , 2 completely different platforms (as is WIN 8) , you didnt say what you will be doing with it, my systems all have different uses!
The netbook i use while teaching at university, ive had since 2009 (it was 2nd hand then) I use it for Access and Excel with all the students info and scores. etc. I use powerpoint for my presentations, Media player for showing the students videos etc. Im running win7 ultimate on it with 1.5GB RAM. I love my netbook and the wife and I take it on holidays for net surfing and saving/uploading pictures from her camera, but Its getting a bit old, the hinges are getting little loose, the charging jack when plugged in, doesnt always make a charging contact.
So Im going to retire the little beast and give it to my wife as she will use it less. As I already have 8 computers scattered around the house, I would like something powerful that will last as long/longer than the netbook. I need it to do all of the above and more! I also would like it for surfing and playing at home and as a bit of a show-off-y gaget thats better than an iPad, as most people here in China only buy Apple products and Im very anti-Apple!
I liked the look of the samsung, the reviews were good, the specs will seem to last for a few years and win8 can be used as a "normal" OS for excel editting, but also as a tablet OS for showing off and "gaget-ing!"
Ive been using WP7 on my HTC HD2 for over a year now and have fallen completely in love with the idea for that on a tablet! I have also fallen in love with a tablet that can be upgraded to 8GB RAM, thats half of the RAM I got in my gaming rig here!
My birthday is still 2 months away, so wont be using the wifes credit card just yet!
So I did buy the Samsung XE700T1A. It arrived last week with Windows 7 which I quickly got rid of for Windows 8 CP x64 Version. Here is my thoughts:
1) Installing on USB via the Windows 7 USB-DVD tool was simple and quick. Windows 8 asked for my hotmail account and by the time the metro UI loaded, everything had been sync, like my WP7 phone
2) Windows 8 took me a day to get used to. I had to keep googling things, but a week later, I feel like an ol' pro. Its so easy and simple to use. I actually prefer it to Windows 7, but as none of my other machines have touch capability, I wont be swapping them over just yet!
3) All programs/games I used on Win7 went on to Win8 with no problems and run fine with two exceptions so far: Firefox isnt very touch friendly. When I try to copy a link from the address bar, I hold my finger down for right click, then press copy and instead of the address being copied, the right click menu disappears without saving the address. There are to work-arounds though; Use IE or the pen that comes with the slate! The other program was actually a game. Left For Dead 2 gives me a fatal error after the intro movie during the loading screen, but I have had that on friends Win7 laptops, so I dont think that is Win8 related.
4)Wifi power seems way more powerful. I live in an apartment complex and my old netbook would see 5 or 6 other wifi signals, my slate sees around 20-25 including signals that are across the road!
5) I fully charged the battery, then let is completely drain a few times and now im getting 9-10 hours (while playing civ5 over wifi) before I need to recharge it. Totally blow away by this.
6) The heat from the machine when playing games seems to be no more than my mates laptops. I recommend using the dock when playing games so the heat can rise vertically out of the top though.
7) Ive checked and its fully upgradeble. The shop offered to put 8GB RAM into it for me instead of the standard 4GB. They also said when the warrenty runs out, they will be happy to put a bigger SSD into it too, and as the CPU seems to be a quad-core (Aida 64, CPU-z and even win8 task manager show 4 seperate cores) this should last me for a good few years!
Here are some pics of it in action:

All in all, definatly worth buying and even with this Beta version of Windows 8, things can only get better. At this point I feel win8 is safe enough to use on a day-to-day basis at work and from next week, I will stop taking my netbook. I really feel that using Windows 8 without a touch screen is wasting alot of the advantages and power that win8 has. Maybe thats why alot of people still havent been taken by it yet?
I didnt mean this post to turn into a mini review and I am biased towards it, so sorry for that!
Hey, the Samsung XE700T1A, how long did it last?
is there any difference in battery life from W7 to W8?

Read point 5... playing high graphic games, i get about 6-9 hours. Wifi/internet browsing, im getting around 15-18hours
my friend i think a few things you told here are a Little bit crazy
i have the Samsung slate for 4 month now (since 29.february running Window 8)
the Maximum of battery life are around 5-6 h. when you play games you will have only 2-3 h left.
so i don´t know if you have a BRANDNEW Slate with a new Kind of fuel cell inside but it´s totally impossible to get 9-10h
"5) I fully charged the battery, then let is completely drain a few times and now im getting 9-10 hours (while playing civ5 over wifi) before I need to recharge it. Totally blow away by this.
"
it only have a 5.520 mAh battery.
every new ultrabook with ivy Bridge (20% less battery drain) has only enough battery power for 7-9 hours! (and they have more than 6000 mAh)
and the cpu is not a quard core. it´s a normal Intel i5 (2nd generation i5-2467M) you got 2 cores (4 is the number of Threads)

Thanks for the clearing up over the core thing, I was confused by the four "cores" shown in AIDA 64, CPU-z and task manager, however that makes sense now.
As for the battery, I cant explain it to you. Saturday I was at the In-laws house and as they dont speak English, normally I am left to my own devises. I played Civ 5 for more than 6 hours, then after we went home, I was watching the England cricket on it via wifi, then finally played Plants vs Zombies on it and had to turn it off around 2am as it was warning me that the battery was at 10%.
I have learn from running my computer business here in China that, if you correctly "setup" a new battery they last a lot longer. I did what Samsung suggest in their manuals and charged it to full, then played until it turned its self off. After repeating 3 times, It will last a really long time. Let me fully charge it and Ill up load a screen shot later.
Thanks for the help with the cores though!
