I bought a G1 off of Craigslist. Like an idiot I reset it and now it is locked and I can't use it since I am on ATT. I asked a friend to call Tmo to get the unlock code but they wouldn't give it saying that the original owner needs to ask for it.
I want to use this guide, to unlock it but I need to activate the phone first in order to downgrade to RC29. If I use my friends T-Mobile SIM card what will happen with his plan and does he need to have a data plan in order to activate it in the first place?
I am assuming that after its been activated I won't need to use his SIM anymore to get around the phone and I am confident enough to be able to downgrade it through use of the excellent guides on this forum.
If there is an easier way to unlock my phone, it would be much appreciated but I have no way of paying over the internet for a code, so I'm stuck at the moment.
You don't need his SIM card to be able to flash RC29, and that guide isn't going to change the fact your phone will still be SIM locked.
Really? That sucks. I guess I will just sell it and buy an unlocked one. Thanks for the reply.

Some stes will have you pay $20 to get the unlock code, they work but the best way would be to call the carrier (which you said you can't do already). Either way will unlock the phone for you
Did you try getting your friend to call tmo and see if they can provide him with the unlock code with your phone? He'll need some numbers off of your phone though.
dont know if anyone knew this...but sim cards are sold seperately, you could buy a prepaid sim card from tmobile, no phone. Just a prepaid card where you add your own minutes put that into the phone, then that activates it, and you will also be a tmobile customer- where you can now call and ask for the unlock code.

But they have a loyalty agreement and won't give unlock codes if you haven't been a customer for three months I believe.

I would like to know if it is possible to sell this phone, in a working condition to someone else. Or is this phone forever tied to me? I currently have this phone and one on another carrier which is much cheaper and cannot afford the hero ATM

Did you sign a contract? If so, you should talk to Sprint about that. We aren't contract lawyers.
Well i didnt actually SIGN anything.. haha but yes I am under contract, I have left carriers before while under contract, with no problems though.
But my question remains the same, if the phone IS tied to me, because of contract or other reasons, is there a way to revert it to a new-like state in which someone could purchase and use the phone? This IS a hacking website after all.

Have you rooted it? If so, you should probably RUU unless they actually WANT the rooted phone. Other than that, you should simply need to format the SD card and do a factory wipe of the phone data. That would return the phone to a factory state.

Well, if you have this phone flashed to another carrier, you'll need to get it all setup back to Sprint before someone else can take it over. But chances are as long as you didn't clone the ESN or something illegal. You can sell it off just fine.
Best bet is to call Sprint and have them check the ESN before you sell it. They can look it up and make sure it can be activated. If there is an unpaid bill on the ESN or if it was ever reported stolen, they will not activate it.
The phone is NOT tied to you once you've been released from your account obligation. People sell their CDMA phones all the time. This isn't a problem
okay, But if i sold it and DIDNT tell sprint, and just stopped paying the bill could it still be activated? BTW it is not flashed to use another carrier. But It would nice if i could unlock it to open up the possibilty of an international sale.

It can't be sold internationally because USA is the only country with CDMA.
Nope a phone has to have a clean ESN to be put on another account. A bad ESN means phone came from an account which still has a balance or was stolen.
You don't even really have to tell sprint, if you activate another phone on the account and remove the Hero... But something has to be active on the account in its place - They pretty much hold the phone hostage until you have paid them.

You can stop paying and sell the phone. Its not a problem. Unless someone reports the phone stolen then it will get a bad ESN number. If you just simply sell it or give it to someone else, it will work perfectly fine.

Ummm no. Have you ever registered a phone that came from an account that still had a balance on it? It won't work
Arrgggh so im getting conflicting answers here. Thats okay though. It makes alot of sense that you wouldnt be able to sell your phone until your balance is paid/ different phone switched to same account.
So ill ask this; is there a way to clean/reset your ESN? That would be ideal.
I've also heard the idea of selling the phone for "parts", but that sounds less appealing because im sure nobody is in the market for a "parts" Hero. Unless someone has knowledge of the contrary.
try selling the phone and transferring the account to someone else at the same time, just go with them to a sprint store. I THINK that can be done.
As for changing the ESN you won't find help for that here as it's illegal.
Hey All,
I'm helping a buddy out here. he bought a used G1 to unlock and put a Vodafone SIM card in it, the SIM has a PIN and the phone is locked to T-mobile. We bought the unlock code and it just says it's unsuccessful..
We even bought a code from a different place(GSM Liberty) and still didn't work..
At this point I'm not sure what it could be, could they have sold him a stolen phone? As far as I knew even if it was, gsm carriers can't "block" the phone...
now I really want to help as my nexus one got wet and he is going to let me borrow his G1 while I fix mine..
Any workaround to unlocking a G1?

The online codes don't work. If someone states otherwise, it was a fluke. Plain and simple.
Step 1: Get a SIM WITHOUT it's own pin number...It was locked for a reason.
Step 2: Call T-Mobile, tell them where you bought the phone from. Give them the IMEI number. They should help you.
**If the phone is stolen, they will know this, if it has been reported. DO NOT FIGHT THEM. If they say it's stolen, cooperate with them in returning it, and reporting the seller you purchased it from.

Shocking to hear the online codes don't work.. The SIM card is new and includes a PIN with the "kit" it comes with..
I'll check it out with my SIM card, I've been a t-mob customer for 6-7 years.. Would they unlock a phone for me anyway if it wasn't bought from them? If it is stolen then my buddy has some talking to do(he bought it from someone HE knows)..
Thanks for the help.
I bought an online code on ebay and it worked fine for me.

I live in the US and i got 2 questions about unlocking my hd2:
1) whats the easist way to unlock it? what are the instructions?
2) is it possible to lock it back so it appears that i didnt void the warranty? how do i do this?
Hey koolxx,
To unlock your HD2 it is very simple you have to aquire yourself a valid unlock code to enter into your HD2. If you are a current T-Mobile customer then you can contact T-Mobile and request a code. Tell them you are going out of country for busness or o vacstion and you want to buy a prepaid sim card from a local carrier to avoid a high bill.Or you can go on Ebay and buy a unlock code and unock it that way.
As far as being able to relock your phone I really do not know if you can or not, buy I am leening toward not.

If that is what he meant then you just have to flash HSPL to it as this is the only other kind of unlock you have for Windows Mobile. But I doubt that is what he meant cause he has already expressed in another thread that he does not want to flash HSPL as it will void the warranty. And just so you know rooting a phone is only done with a Andriod ROM as what you actually do when you root a Andriod ROM you gain full access to the kernel of the Linux that Andriod is running on top of. I also know from the other thread that koolxx is running a stock Windows Mobile ROM on his HD2. So I think he was refering to unlocking his HD2 to being able to use other carriers you know a sim unlock.

Sorry but you have to have a sim card from the another carrier. I do not think it has to be a sim card from the carrier you want to use cause when you unlock it your HD2 will be abale to use any sim card. I suggest going and buying a cheap Go Phone (prepaid phone) from AT&T and using it. I think you will have to activate the sim card using whatever cheap phone you buy. Remember you are just buying it to get the sim card so nothing fancy. If you just went to another carrier they would make you sign a contract to get the sim card unless you told them you wanted to use your HD2 with the carriers prepaid plan. Then they would just charge you for the sim card and whatever it would cost to get call time, messaging, and data through their prepaid plan. Also be aware that when you switch to another carrier you will only get Edge for data signal as the internal hardware of the T-Mobile HD2 will only allow 3G with the T-Mobile network. So there is no work around to get 3G with another carrier shorts of upgrading the internal hardware, and I don't know if that is possible.

Hi,
I am not technically inclined. I need to get my Samsung Galaxy SGHI1337 unlocked.
I am ready to pay for the unlocking service. But all my friends and families are on AT&T network like I am.
Where can I get a non-AT&T SIM card cheap to get my phone unlocked via cellunlocker.net? I only have access to an old, never-activated AT&T SIM card.
I know cellunlocker gives you 3 options, but I heard inserting a non-AT&T SIM card is the most successful route.
Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

go to a store and tell them you want to unlock it because your contract is up in a couple months and you want to make sure you can use their service, they prob have one in the store thats even activated for testing purposes.
just a few thoughts off top of my head.
Thanks!

I called TMobile. They said they sell a SIM card for $10.00 at the store. After that, I will need to activate the service at the store.
The problem is I am fine with AT&T since I get special discount through relatives working for AT&T. I just want to get phone unlocked so I can take it with me to Europe.
But does the SIM have to be activated for the unlocking purpose? If not, I can just buy a TMobile SIM and unlock, right?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Go to a mall or T-mobile kiosk and get a $10 prepaid sim. They should activate it where you buy it.
Yeah like ^^he said^^, I was more thinking walk into a place, a kiosk is a good idea too, when they see you face to face and you deal with a "person" they do things a bit different than give the "company response" over the phone.
Not sure of where you live, but I heard they sell Straight Talk sims at Walmart now...don't know myself. but I think they are like $7.
Also maybe an easier time walking into a MVNO, like Boost or Metro PCS or one of those where you can Bring Your Own Phone and just tell them you want to unlock it and see if it will work with their service before your contract is up. But you have better luck going in and standing in front of the person IMO.
Good Luck.
I stopped at a T-Mobile store and said I was looking to change to them from AT&T and they gave me a sim to unlock the phones with. I guess it depends on who you talk to.

Nah you shouldn't need to activate it. Just pop it in and it should recognize that it's a SIM that isn't supported (tmo based) by the network your locked to (att) and it should ask for the unlock code and you can proceed with whatever unlocking procedure your using.
I've done this on a gs1, Infuse, and a gs3. For selling purposes. An unlocked device is alot easier to sell, that's why I did it. Haven't done it to my gs4... Yet. But it should work just the same.

Once your contact is up they might just give it to you if you ask. Those kits would never coming to unlock code. The first reason each code is different for each device. Second I'm sure they would have a lawsuit on their hands if they did. You can always just tell them you're going out of the country and need the unlock code to use the cell phone over there.
but in the end it's so much more fun in hacking to get to device unlocked on your own. But again that's my own opinion.
99 cents for several different ones at http://pickyoursim.com/
I had Verizon at one point and I wanted a new sim card so I just went to the closest Verizon retail store and asked for another one. They asked me why and I told them that I was having network problems so they gave me a free one.
