VPN, best practices and wifi in general

Hi, Ive just got an imate JAMin after a 3 year break from the Pocket PC world and im very impressed but I have a few questions.
1) VPN, how do you actually connect to it? I have enterd all the details to connect to my windows VPN server but as far as I can see the only way to initiate the connection is to tap hold on the VPN in connection manager and select connect. But it also never does anything.
2) Is there any way to select if the wireless uses b or g mode or is it totally automatic? I would like to leave it in b only mode to save power.
3) My setup is as follows. Wireless at home directly connected to the internet, wireless at work on our lan which also offers internet access. I would like to know whats the best way to setup my connections? Should I say my wireless is on the work network or on the internet? I want connections no matter where I am to always use the wifi first and then if it cant connect to use the GPRS connection. The way I have done it is to convigure everything to use my work network and added a GPRS connection to that. so the 'My ISP' option isnt even used any more.

PROBLEM: sharing folder with WiFi...

Hi guys!
I'm trying to use (first time 4 me!) WiFi connection from my laptop and my Jamin in this way:
Start from scratch (without connections...) and turn on both wifi.
Create a new connection for only 2 devices from my Jamin without any security (4 the moment).
Now I can see the new wifi network on my laptop...
I chose connect from my laptop and the connections estabilish.
Handshake to retrieve the ip address is oaky and now I've got the connection from my 2 devices (Jamin and laptop).
On laptop I can ping the ip address of my Jamin but now I don't know what can I do with this connection.
Is it possible to share some folder on laptop and/or on Jamin to copy/remove/move some files?
Is it possible to use the std modem connection of my laptop for browsing the web from Jamin?
Is it possible to sync with Activesync my Jamin?
How can I do it, guys?

You can do most of what you want:
First, make sure that if you selected (on the Jamin) that your network connects to 'Work' in Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced->Network Selection both lists read 'My work network' or 'My ISP' if you selected the 'connects to Internet'.
1) To browse, copy, move and delete files on you laptop just create standard windows shares. (right click folder or drive, select sharing)
To access the files from the Jamin select 'open path' in file explorer and type \\computer-name\\share-name. I recommend using the free Total Commander because built-in file explorer takes up to 3 times as long to transfer files (no idea why, it just hangs in the middle).
Unfortunately Windows Mobile does not support file sharing so this will not work viceversa (looking at Jamin files from laptop)
2) To serf the web through laptop internet connection you have to use 'internet connection sharing' (not a problem if you are using Win XP).
On the Jamin go to Settings->Connections->Network Card->Adapters
tap on your WiFi card in the list and enter your laptops IP as the gateway.
3) Sync is possible but tricky. I don't know the exact procedure but you need to set up a VPN (MS removed WiFi sync from AS 4+ for security reasons). The procedure is documented somewhere here, I just don't remember where exactly.

Just another think....
What about hotspos?
I never search for a hotspot near me because I think I will not able to connect to a hotspot.
Can you exlain me the procedure to search and use hotspot? How can I see if the found hotspot is open or closed? Do you use some sw to connecti with WiFi?

I am not sure about your laptop, it depends on its WiFi card driver.
As for Jamin it is very simple: Turn on WiFi, it will automatically search for all available networks and display them stating if the network is open or secure. Then you just select a network you want and it will try to connect.
Also in settings->connections->Network cards you can see all the networks your device detected (even those that are not in the vicinity any more) when WiFi is on. Tap on a network to change its settings (like encryption type if any) or tap and hold for a menu.
If you don't mind wasting space on .NET CF 2 You can download a free app called Hitchhiker that helps auto-configure WiFi network connection.
Just remember: even if you found what looks like an open Hotspot it may be just an unsecured network that doesn't provide internet acces ot the network may block devices by MAC address, in this case it will show as open but you will not be able to connect.

So, is it possible that I can connecto to a hotspot but I can't use it or if I see the hotspot connected that means that I can use it to surf the web?
After the connection is estabilished what I have to do or confiugre to surf the web using that connection?

Whether you have internet access or not once you are connected depends on the network (what you think is a hotspot may be in fact someones home network that does not have internet access). If it is a public hotspot you don't have to do anything once you are connected except to open Internet Explorer.

I'm always thinking (WRONG) thet accesspoint is home LAN and hotspot is internet...

The definition thing is kind of tricky. When you say access point some people might just think of a device with an antenna that plugs in to your network to extend coverage and others might say it is the same as hotspot.
Hotspot is generally defined as a public access WiFi network.
All of that is semantics though. When you turn on a WiFi capable Pocket PC or laptop it detects everything with WiFi around it.
It can determine if the source is another computer (Ad-hoc network) or if it is a router (real network), what standard it is (g/b) and whether it is secured (requires key) or not. Also if the network broadcasts SSID (disabling it is another security measure) you may learn its name, although it may be set to default, which is usually the router model.
As far as I know there are two ways to learn what you are connected to:
1) Ask who ever is in charge of it.
2) Poke around, and see what you get.
One more thing: There is an app (not free) called PocketLAN. It shows you the network (on your Jamin) just like you would see it in Network Neighborhood on the PC, plus lets you ping other computers and stuff. You may want to check it out.

Now I have another problem.... I clear all my "wifi networks" (?) from the tab visible in the screenshto.
I also clear all my wifi networks from laptop.
Tha problem is that I'd like to configure somethink on my laptop in order to automatically connect from my Jamin on it.
I'd like to turn on the wifi on Jamin and receive the notification that a connection can be estabilish to my laptop...
I tryed a lot but I can't do it!
Is it possible? The tab in attachment what rappresent? I have to confiugure somethink there?
I'm always thinking that wifi connection are visible simply turning on the wifi of any device...
Is there some guide for dummys? I don't want to annoing so mutch... :-(

What are you trying to do? What is the problem you are getting?
If you start from the beginning I might be able to help you better.
In any case once you open 'Network selection' you will see two combo boxes - "drop down" lists.
You need to select same thing in both - "My ISP" than make sure when you connect to a network you select "The internet".

unable to find network wifi
i am using o2 xda mini s to connect my laptop via wifi. it shows the connections excellent on both devices with ip address 169.254.72.236 on ppc nd 169.254.130.63 on laptop. i used laptop ip address as gateway address on ppc network wifi adaptor setting.
using ping with this ip(169.254.72.236) from laptop it shows success. but can't share folders and transfer files. when i try to open the pah from the file explorer in ppc or laptop it says 'unable to find network that support this ip address' either by entering the name of computer or by entering ip address
help me in using this facility.

8525 problems???

I have been reading this forum and many others all day about the wifi problems people are having but none are like mine so I would like to ask this question, I turn on wifi and it will not find my network or any network around. I have tried to manually put in the ssid and ip address and still it will not connect that way either. I have checked and double checked all my router setting (currently set to open with no wep or anything) I am begining to wonder if the wifi is broken? My second problem I have found it when I change the connection setting to my isp I cannot connect to the internet. Maybe a bad setting, I am not really sure. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

is your router set to broadcast the ssid? if not then that is the problem. if this option is not enabled then no one can see your router.
as far as connecting via a cell connection, make sure you are using an operator cab. I am sure if you do a simple search you will be able to find a cab that will load all of the proper setting for a cellular internet connection.
who is your provider?

Yes, my router does bradcast the ssid and I have four computers and printers that find it without anyproblems. When i turn on wi-fi the phone doesn't even search for a network the icon shows up but I don't get the arrow that go back on forth to show that it is searching or connecting.

I am also having a problem with my 8525. I do get connected but i cant browse the net. Can someone tell me how to setup a connection from scratch to connect to wifi. Thanks

Search around on the Hermes forum. IE doesn't know to use the WiFi connection when it's available. There's a registry key setting that needs to be changed in order for IE to make use of the WiFi connection rather than going out over your data connection with your carrier.

Sharing internet with a mogul?

If someone could please tell me how to - or point me to a thread with instructions to teather my Mogul to my latop so I can use internet?.. I understant that it can be dont without the data plan but I cant find any instructions anyplace.. I tried internet connection sharing but keep getting error 67 when tryimg to connect.. can anyone help me please??

This link appears to be wi-fi only.. will it work with the Sprint Network.. ?

Yeah, what it does is convert your Mogul's WiFi into an access point. Your laptop will access your Sprint connection as though it were connecting to your wireless router at home.

I wouldnt need to use my phone if my latop is Wi-Fi.. Guess what I was wanting is a way to use my laptop using the sprint network, for when I cant get Wi-Fi.
I thought is was possable but I must have been mistaken

This is the point. Your Mogul will be your WiFi access point that will use Sprint internet connection. This is for when you CANNOT get WiFi with your laptop.

I'll try it one last time...
1. Your laptop (as you just confirmed) is capable of receiving WiFi.
2. Your Mogul receives Sprint's data connection.
Unless you are not aware, your Mogul is also capable of receiving WiFi (like your laptop). What chaninfire's program does is make your Mogul capable of SENDING a WiFi signal while connected to Sprint so that your laptop will receive it. Your laptop will be connecting to Sprint's network through Mogul's WiFi signal. In other words your Mogul becomes a wireless router.

Didnt mean to sound like a idiot.. but I was lost thinking that I could only use Wi-Fi.. But now know I can connect to the Sprint network and using wi-fi to connect my Laptop make perfecr sense.. now if I can just figure out how to get it working.. If you follow the instructions you will also unlock the internet sharing app. Once you have followed the instructions in the thread about chainfires app, to share your internet over USB,do the following.
1) terminate the activesync app on your handset
2) Run the internet sharing application
3) As soon as its done connecting,plug in the USB cable.
4) Enjoy the internet. A similar procedure can also be used to connect via bluetooth,but you get better speed over USB or via WiFi.
If you want to use wifi,you can either follow the adhoc method listed in the thread,or you can use a wireless access point. To use a wireless accesspoint,set your WAPs local IP address to 192.168.0.2 Internet connection sharing will want to be 192.168.0.1 Now you need to connect your mogul to the WiFi network,and connect your PC to the wifi network. Go into the network properties and set your pc to 192.168.0.x where x is an unused address. Set the gateway and DNS servers to 192.168.0.1 and your on the internet. As far as I know,this should work with multiple computers on your network,and it will connect up easily and seamlessly when you flip the wifi switch on your mogul.

Sprint HTC Mogul/SERO Notes
It seems Sprint is up to shenanigans in regards to tethering for SERO users. Those of you running Sprint ROMs should navigate to the following registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing" and delete the string value named "Extension". This will allow you to connect to the Internet via the Internet Sharing app without the dreaded error 67/authentication errors. Previous to this fix, Mogul SERO users would have to connect to the Internet via another method (such as starting Internet Explorer first) before pressing the Connect button in the the Internet Sharing application.
If you're really paranoid (it has been concluded these entries have no meaning when using Internet Sharing), using a registry editor, navigate to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\WModem" key, and set the "CheckProfile", "Multi-NAI" and "WModemDUN" DWORDS to a decimal value of "0".

WMWifiRouter does this for you automatically, but that isn't much help if you want to share via USB instead of WiFi. The above solution should work with USB as well, and the error 67 goes away. GL

With the Mogul you can have your Wifi card on and still be on Sprints EVDO network at the same time. Basically you are broadcasting the EVDO connection wirelessly. I use it on my laptop and get pretty good download speeds. It pretty much like using the Sprint EVDO connection data cards...You have to go into the adapter settings under the connections tab and give it a static IP address (ie 192.168.1.9)

Work with Verizon?
It seems like all of the posts speak about Sprints network, do these methods work with Verizon?
Are there any methods specific to Verizon?

I just signed up with for a SERO account and have one major question regarding the wifi router app... Does it put the phone into "tether" mode? In other words, will sprint be able to detect that you are sharing your connection or does it simply bridge the phone's EV-DO connection to its wifi connection?

It's a bridge but Sprint can always detect it if they wish. A guy over in the WMWifiRouter topic says he has been tethering for quite a while this way and hasn't gotten a bill for it.

Oh So simple.. Bluetooth connection
Well I Got my Mogul like 2 months ago and just stumbled across the internet sharing app and to my suprise it worked.... No Xtra software required
I have a macbook 13'in w 2g ram, bluetooth and all that. I use my mogul with my mac and it works like a charm wish i had EVDO in the area but it is good for now....
Step one: Pair your mogul with your computer.
Step Two: Make sure you Have a connection to the net on your mogul. Use ie to go to a page on your phone (otherwise it will say your username and pass are not right)
Step Three:Open internet sharing on your mogul. Make sure your PC connection is: Bluetooh Pan and the Network connection is: Sprint PCS
Step Four: Tap the connect tab on your phone
Step Five:After the internet sharing has a connection to the net, go to the bluetooth settings on your computer, Select you phone and connect
There you have it Tethering VIA bluetooth with no Xtra software.

here is a question.....what if i need to connect a desktop to the internet using the mogul? how do i go about that? everything is about wifi and there seems to be nothing about connecting a desktop to it.
can someone give me pretty detailed instructs on how as i have never done this before.

I use pdanet for Verizon Titan. It works very well and simple. Simply connect through usb or bluetooth and bamn..you are connected. It also does not charge you any tethering fee....but acquiring pdanet is a cost unless you can find it somewhere....

problem is I dont know how to "simply" connect through the usb. Im pretty ignorant where this stuff is concerned. is there any free ware that does what pdanet does? not that im a cheapO but hey money saved is money earned right?

Sharing Shift's HSDPA internet connection over a wireless ad hoc network?

last time I tried to share my Shift's internet connection over an ad hoc network, so that others could go online with their own laptops.
I was not able to do this. Is is even possible? What do I have to do on my Shift?
I created a new ad hoc network and enabled the "Internet Sharing" option at the end of the setup wizard (in Vista). Then the other XP laptop successfully connected to this network but I could not get any further.
Do I have to use my Shift's wireless NIC IP address as the gateway on the other hosts? Do I have to disable my Vista firewall? I wasn't even able to ping the other device within this network.
On both systems I did not specify any host IP addresses. Is this managed by the two hosts on their own? (DCHP, DNS?)
It is a bit confusing, as I never set up such a network and with two different Operating Systems this doesn't get easier. What a about a network bridge? Do I have to unite the wireless network adapter and the SnapVue network into a new network bridge? In that case my Shift loses the internet connectivity.

Solution
Ah, I get to re-live my moment of glory by posting the working solution that I devised:
This allows you to share your Shift HSDPA internet connection with, say your laptop, so that your laptop can have internet anywhere where there is a mobile signal (and your Shift windows side is on).
The setup method is similar to the ICS instructions in Vista Help and on various internet pages, but with an extra step at the end to get it to actually work.
First thing first, you need an adhoc network connection between your Shift and your laptop. I used Wifi. This is easy to achieve using the network and sharing centre on both your Shift and your laptop. (You may need to Temporarily tone down your firwall in order to set up this adhoc network connection.)
Then you need to set up ICS on your shift. Enable the options in your Network and Sharing centre. Read the ICS instuctions in Windows help if you need help with setting these options.
Ok, so it should now work according to Vista documentation, but it doesn't. Now the trick that I found to get it to work:
Each time you wish to share your Shifts HSPDA internet with your laptop/s, do the following:
1. Connect to your ad hoc network from your shift and laptop to open the connection. (you may have set this up to establish automatically).
2. On you Shift, manage network connections and get properties for Local Area Connection. Select the Sharing tab and DISABLE both options.
3. On you Shift, get properties for Local Area Connection. Select the Sharing tab and ENABLE both options.
Wait about 30 seconds, and then your shifts HSPDA internet should be happily available on your laptop. (Vista indicates this by drawing a world globe on the network icon of the taskbar of your laptop.)
Repeat steps 1-3 for every time you wish to use your Shifts HSDPA internet on your laptop.
To connect your Shift to a home Broadband internet wifi, do the following steps:
1. On you Shift, manage network connections and get properties for Local Area Connection. Select the Sharing tab and DISABLE both options.
2. Connect to the wifi home Broadband internet.

I'm a bit confused, could you clarify? Here's where I'm confused. I don't have wired broadband in my house; I'm strictly cellular. So, for me, I cannot have both Wifi and HSDPA on and be able to connect to the internet. Windows 7 thinks Wifi is a better connection so it won't even try HSDPA. You said that the first step was to "connect to your network from your Shift and laptop." I assume you mean Wifi here?
From the get go I'm out of luck because I won't have internet with Wifi on.
But then I'm still curious. The next two steps have you disabling and then enabling the sharing option. Nothing is ever done on the laptop. Can you clarify?
UPDATE: I figured it out! I just filled in the blanks with some common sense and it worked! Now I have my Macbook Pro connecting to the internet through my Shift, and . . . it's kinda free. Thanks Flanimal!

It's great to get things working isn't it? By the sounds of it, this also also allows you to have a permanent wifi network between your Shift and you Macbook pro, wheras before you had to disable the Shift wifi to get internet. If so, cool!
