GPS XM w/o data connx - Mogul, XV6800 General

Is there a way to have XM/Sirius without a data connection using pure sat signals?

Pretty certain the answer is Nope! Completely different types of receiving antennas, etc., etc.
However I can confirm that the HTC 6800 Mogul's internal GPS chip functions and provides GPS location data when the Mogul has no cellular reception.

Simultaneous Voice and Data Connection???

Hey guys, I am not sure if I am missing something in the settings or what, but for some reason, when i am talking on the phone I cannot connect to the internet. My HSDPA connection turns off. Once I hang up, it reconnects. I thought the X1 was capable of doing simultaneous voice and data connects. What causes this? And is there a way to enable both voice and data connects at the same time? Thanks!

simultaneous voice and data have been available since the first gprs phone
it was the reason gprs was invented rather then dialup data over gsm
but if the operators hardware in the centrals don't support it no phone or setting
can change that
i'be been doing in on my old himalaya gprs phone for ages

Well, I can do it on my old 3G phone, but not on my X1a. AT&T has allowed this for years, I know that. I just want to know if there is a way I might have accidentally turned it off or something.
Mine won't do it either. My Xperia kicks on the Wifi and continues PUSH email delivery through when ever I have the phone in use. BUT, my blackberry and iPhone would both not allow voice and data at once. It may have to do with T-mobile's settings where I am though.
I have the same issue with T-MO network.

Exactly. My internet gets "put on hold" for the duration of the phone call.
I face this when i have a GPRS/EDGE coverage, but when connected to 3G/3.5G/H it's ok, i can make both without problems

anaadoul is correct. In fact, regular GPRS cannot send data simultaneously as the voice call.
EDGE can SOMETIMES do so if the carrier's tower/cell supports this, but not all do, so while EDGE provides faster data connection, you may or may NOT get simultaneous data and voice. This is my experience at least. I think EDGE is always supposed to support simultaneous voice/data but my experience shows otherwise.
This is one of the primary reasons I am using a 3G network and 3G phone now. 3.5G/H while providing faster data, have no difference in regards to simultaneous voice data, but do use more power/battery so if I know I'm going to be out a long, long time, I turn H/3.5G off.
For me, it is VERY important I can use data and voice at the same time. I have my phone checking mail every 10 minutes, and it takes about 10-30 seconds to successfully check mail, so that means every 10 minutes, if an incoming call arrives, it'll go straight to voicemail and I miss it. That is not acceptable.
Plus, if I receive a business call, I can check mail, open up websites, etc. WHILE i am on the call. You have no idea how useful that is.

allow me to agree/disagree with you on some points.
imo, Edge doesn't support simultaneous call/data, except some devices that have some dual GSM radio as both operate on the same radio device level.
afaik the technology of 3G+ is different, the voice itself is not being transmitted as GSM signal, it's converted into a something similar to VOIP (that what makes Video Call Happens), a phone call uses one channel for audio transmit, the good thing is that the archetecture of 3G+ is designed to have multiple simultaneous connections to the tower cell, this will allow more transfer bandwidth, while this makes you able to browse and talk at the same time, it also puts more load on the cell (the cell can accept a certain fixed number of connections depending on the location and population of the area) resulting on people getting Network Busy Error!
so the result is a data connection is dropped if the cell is full in order to take a phone call.
what makes 3G+ really fast is that it can open milti channels with the cell, allowing more allocated bandwidth (we all know it reaches up to 7.2mbps).
3G+ consumes LESS power imo than GPRS/EDGE (Data connection only, voice calls consumes more on 3G+) as 3G+ will close all active connections when there is no application transferring (see the H icon disappearing when no application is downloading anything and 3G/3.5G icon is there, once an internet request is made it will go back to H).
so the result i think as follows
GPRS/EDGE : Low battery consumption for voice calls, High for Data & No simultaneous Call & Data.
3G/3.5G/HSDPA : Higher battery consumption for voice calls, Low for Data & Supports simultaneous Call & Data.
btw, i am connected to my Company's exchange server using Microsoft Direct Push. when the connection is G or E, i loose my battery more quicker than 3G/3.5G/H
even i have noticed that 3G+ consumes way less power that WiFi (now my email is synced over the air even in the office so my battery won't die quickly. don't worry i have a huge data plan )
please correct me if i'm wrong, all my information above is based on personal experiance

Well, I don't know if this will work for everyone but I fixed my issue. I just called my voicemail and put it on speakerphone in order to keep the voice connection open. Then I tried surfing with Opera a few times. The first few times it wouldn't connect, but then suddenly my phone beeped twice and I got the connection window saying my 3G was connecting. At first I thought I had just forced it but in retrospect, I think I just had a bad signal and had just connected to my 3G network. Thanks for all the info guys!

Start -> Settings -> Phone -> Band
1.Set network type to WCDMA
2.Set GSM/UMTS band to UMTS
these forces your device into a 3G+ network
3.open commManager from start menu
4.turn dataconnection ON
5.Make a call
6.try browsing

I agree... 3G and 3G+ seem to consume LESS battery than WIFI!
As for Edge, my experience is that I never could get simultaneous voice/data, but you're right, both the cell AND the phone need to support this function. I dont think our Xperia's hardware actually supports this at all. When I switched to using the Xperia I had purposely changed to a 3G network to take advantage of the 3G/3G+ capabilities it has.

I called AT&T to see if they support simultaneous Data and Voice and they said they do, but your phone has to as well. The X1 supports it also, so I just think I wasn't asble to do so because I was only in GPRS, not 3G.

4G and WiFi Not Compatible?

I had been having problems getting 4G at home and just noticed that if I turn off WiFi, 4G pops right up and as soon as I re-enable WiFi (which connects to my home network) 4G disconnects. Has anyone seen this behavior? When you think about it, it makes perfect sense, and since both are enabled to connect when the other one isn't, the flip-flop is automatic. But it surprised me.
its probably because sprints 4G is based on WIFI. or it just cuts off 4G cus you dont need it anymore
I believe it works the same way as WiFi and EVDO works on older phones. When you turn on WiFi it will use that as your data connection instead of EVDO regardless if it is a crappy WiFi connection.

Yeah, it's actually pretty cool, but if you don't know about it, it gets frustrating. I called Sprint customer service and he had me go through the battery out/in routine and go outside and try, etc. So maybe they don't know about it either!
But it makes sense for Sprint, since their data plan is unlimited and they want to avoid network overloading (are you listening AT&T? LOL). The only thing you miss on WiFi are location-based sevices that rely on GPS (navigation, some weather products, etc.).

WiFi and 802.16e aren't all that similar. LOTS of differences between the protocols.
Maybe there's some isolation problems on your device as Sprint is using their 2.5 GHz spectrum holdings for their 4G network.
4g network and 3g network both will shut off when enabling wifi. Why have 2 forms of data going at the same time? Its not gunna use both to double your speeds.
You wont lose any GPS features. Turn on wifi and load up Google Maps, it will find your location exact.
When making calls and sending text it uses 1x so you will still receive everything except for MMS. Maybe they fixed it to where you can receive them even when on wifi with the Evo, not 100% sure.
4g and WiFi are both data only connections. You don't need two data connections simultaneously so it is smart enough to auto disable one to save battery. It would also cause routing problems.
Every phone does this LOL When you switch on Wifi they turn off 2g,3g,4g etc because you can't use 2 data connections at the same time.
I'm curious why you would want 4g and wifi on at the same time?
I thought this was pretty common knowledge (on any Android phone)... And I also thought it was done for battery conservation reasons as much as anything else. WiFi's a simpler point to point connection and from what I understand it sucks less power than 3G or 4G which is constantly checking for additional cell towers in case you've moved, etc.
If you're at home or at work w/a stable WiFi connection you should be able to preserve more battery power by using it, within the settings you can even set it so the phone doesn't revert to 3G when it goes to sleep (the default setting IIRC), otherwise it does this and only jumps back to WiFi when you wake it ('till you're out of range anyway).
I agree with all the comments. And if the Sprint Customer Service guys had said, "Hey, you idiot...it's supposed to do that," then I wouldn't have posted. But the fact that he was as stumped as I was prompted me to post (we all know that Sprint gets all it's info from reading these forums...LOL).

[Q] Repeating cellular network using a cellphone?

I was wondering if it is at all possible to repeat a cellular network signal using a cellphone. Is such a thing possible?
I am talking about using an application on any cellphone on any network, with any OS. Are cellphones built in any way to rebroadcast cellular network signal? If not an app, does anyone have any generalized DIY information on gutting a phone and using it's internal antennae to rebroadcast the cellular signal in some way?
Example scenario: Cellphone is in a location that has full signal strength. Less than 5 meters away there is 0 signal due to a ceiling of doom. The cellphone has horizontal line of sight to the dead-zone. The cellphone in the full bars area by means of an app (or some hardware modification) is able to rebroadcast the signal to some degree towards the dead-zone.

[Q] 3G radio stays on even with Mobile Data off?

I was just wondering whether you guys have experienced this or not.
When I connect to Wifi networks (generally only when I am in a basement or area with poor 3G/LTE connection), I always disable mobile data as well. Coming from the Note 2, this would also disable the 3G CDMA/LTE radio and just leave the 1X connection because it needs no more than that for calls and messages. Now it keeps the 3G/LTE radios on searching or trying to hold a very poor signal, completely killing my battery (8-10% an hour).
Are there any ways to turn off the data radio? I already tried Phone Info (used on Note 2 to force 3G) but I don't think it can force 1x only.

Note3 NC2 stock KK Leak + VZW Network Extender = CRAP!

Hello Everyone --- Note3, NC2 Leak stock modded deodexed rom.....worked fine for several months.
Cell signal in my basement office is very weak -- got a VZW extender, 3G signal now shows super good strength and calls are good. I am on wifi for data... Problem is when I'm on the extender, the phone is laggy as ever...super slow, gets very warm, screen lags, experience is horrible. I have reflashed, cleared cache, everything.... to no avail. Once i unplug the extender...everything is just fine again (snappy/responsive, better battery life, etc etc)
Anybody else experience this behavior?
Is it a Booster or a microcell? Microcells/femtocells plug in your Home Internet where the boosters try to boost cell signals. Boosters generally only work worth a damn if set up very particular to the scenario at your location. Otherwise they get a ton of echo and your phone can hand off between the tower and booster which can lead to increased power use.
I hate boosters for the most part. They work best if you have virtually zero service indoors and can run a long coax outside to an antenna location that gets good service. Swapping the typically included omni antenna for a directional antenna and aiming it directly at the tower would be of much benefit.
Putting a booster into your house and expecting it to not suck is like expecting to find good food at Mcdonald's.
Also, you may consider that your Note3 may have reception issues that a number of people including me had when upgrading to KK. You should try to verify if the reception seems like it is behaving normally.
Lastly, use the app Advanced Signal Status to force your phone to CDMA auto (PRL). This will allow you prevent your phone from trying to find LTE, which will save battery and will operate cooler.
You can also force CDMA only, which will prevent your phone from connecting to EVDO as well as LTE, and should run cooler and save battery.
Note3 does not have separate radios for simultaneous CDMA data and voice. The ONLY way to have voice and data at the same time is to have 4G or wifi.
In your scenario, I would just put the phone into CDMA only mode at home and use wifi, and put it into CDMA/LTE auto (PRL) or CDMA auto (PRL) depending on whether you want 4G or 3G data while traveling.
