Does anybody know what type and perhaps where I can buy the memory module so I can change it myself.
I do not think you would want to change it yourself, it will require some really advanced soldering skills due to the way memory chips are surface mounted.
(A nice article can be found here: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=549700&highlight=+bengalboy++128)
My sugesstion is to ship it to www.ppctechs.com. They're reliable, fast, and a worth everyone of those $199.
thanks for some nice info
Im a electronics skilled worker and have access to an advanced solder bench so I think I will manage it.
But I still wonder what type of memory module it uses and where I can order them.
Not a clue. Since I guess PPCTECHS will not tell you I guess, the only thing you can do is open the device and examine it
Mini is using 2pcs of Infineon 16Mx16 SDRAM, BGA package. What you need is 2 pcs of 32Mx16 devices to mount on the mini. Speed of the chip is a PC133, CL3....guess in this case, the CAS is not really important.
thank you for the info.
Ill try to find a place to get them.
Please post any info you get. I'm also interested in doing it myself.
Any news ?
I wonder if some of the modules I found on this page can be used
http://www.infineon.com/cgi/ecrm.dll/ecrm/scripts/prod_ov.jsp?oid=58787
Desoldering BGA from SODIMMs requires you to reball the BGA...you need the rite tools to reball them first b4 remounting them, its best this way...if not...it will not be good..
I've seen a few threads about an FM radio capability. Is this correct, that the hardware is there, but not used ?
I looked through a few tear downs and specs, but two of them contradicted each other.
Thanks !
from what i can work out, the chip is there, but not in use...hopefully some clever chef can unlock that module
I was wondering the same thing, hopefully someone makes an app for it soon
Anyone tried to install the Radio apk from HTC Tattoo on N1?
The broadcomm wifi/bt chip in N1 does indeed have FM functionality. It has never been tested (it was not a planned feature for the device and there was not time in the software schedule), so I can't guarantee it'll work, and somebody would need to actually do the driver work to get it going, but in *theory* it should be doable.

Could Google add support for this later or would it only be a case of the community adding it?
Does/would the SDK allow access to the broadcomm chip?
We (Google) don't currently have FM radio on the short term roadmap as a standard platform feature, so for now a community project would get you there the quickest.

Is there any documentation on the CPU that can help us code the driver? I can't seem to find anything
I have also been searching for FM Radio API and applications and stumbled across a couple of links that might be of interest.
The first one is a software developer who has got an FM Radio application running on android which has been written by Qualcomm and uses a beagle board as hardware.
i-miss-erin.blogspot.com/2009/08/listen-fm-radio-in-android.html
The second is from an android open source community. Actual source code is listed but I think it is written for a Qualcomm chip rather than the Broadcom one in the Nexus. Any code buffins able to tell us any more info from the source code?
codeaurora.org/gitweb/quic/la/?p=platform/packages/apps/FM.git;a=summary
I really want to get a FM radio app on my soon to be arriving Nexus. An FM transamitter would be handy too. Common Google even my old Nokia N78 has one!

Nice finding here. The application actually looks good but it won't run on Nexus. It uses android.hardware.fmradio class that doesn't exist on the current sdk (had it even existed?)
Have a look at
codeaurora.org/wiki/QAEP
it has more information about the community building these libraries. Here is a quote "MSM/QSD Android Enablement project allows users to build an Android based platform containing additional enhancements for Qualcomm chipsets. "
Hopefully they start making enchancements for the Broadcomm chipsets too.
An FM transmitter would prolly make me cry... would love to throw my ipods in a drawer and move on in my life lol
Was searching around about our elocity interesting how this offers a built in 3g or bluetooths and sim card option this product seems quite a bit like our elocity same components too.
Dexter and any other developer see what you kind find out about this, looks like different interface could be the break in the kernel we wanted.

Hope this is what we needed to really get this ball rolling on other O.S.
Anyone feel free to find out what you can about thisw site and the drivers listed and lets work on pulling what we need from it and establishing a center for all the drivers.

thanks..
ok, the site does not have any files for this tablet..
Dex I know it list everything for every product they have or so it would seem under driver tab. I wonder if we can email thier support and them compile the files or point them out for us.
Anyone have an in at Compal?
It would be awesome to get our hands on the boards they were making before they removed the GSM provisions.
As for that site, it just looks like a reseller to me.

but you understand your PC?
so if you board has a core2duo with 2GB memory, and you add a Geforce, and as modems are rare, you find a nice windows7 compatible modem card + a wifi from broadcom with integrated bluetooth.
Next guy does almost the same but he uses a different wifi and bluetooth card for his pc..
so we got 2 pc's equipped almost the same but with different wifi/bt and of course on chose panasonic touch display , where the other one got LG touchscreen which again uses different drivers.
its all about drivers, not just the chipset
I will continue the search for every driver for this device. If you could list any known manaufacters and the part they made. I will search for every driver I can, and will keep you up to date with my progress. Keep me informed on your break throughs with honeycomb or if there is something you need to find and I will help.
u-boot, drivers and kernel source
Does anyone have the nvidia Tegra 250 devkit? Supposedly they were going to include u-boot support and source. See tegradeveloper.nvidia.com/tegra/forum/uboot-tegra-250
Does the dev kit even have open source for drivers and kernel patches. Is full support for the tegra 250 already at kernel.org or is it missing some key features?
I've held up on ordering the dev kit since my experience with nvidia is that they tend to keep as much information private as possible even with an NDA in place.
I'd gladly help develop a completely open bootloader with u-boot, Linux kernel and distro for this device if hardware specifications are actually available. Google was talking about a possible tegra based device that surely would include open source, but I don't think that project ever made it to market.

you sign a NDA with Nvidia, so no chance of anyone releasing it to community. if they do if will be figured out, and a lawsuit coming their way..
so thats a no go.
Registered developers with Nvidia, know this, so they wouldn't dare risking a lawsuit..
So in their typical control freak fashion they don't want specs or source getting out into the open. Looks like I'll be skipping the A7 until it gets at least a touchscreen update.

not entirely true, its only the parts you asked about..
kernel is GPL and parts of related drivers follows.. but bootloaders are a protected part, and some the vendor specific parts used to manage the chipset together with their nv drivers.. but thats how i read it..
more might be available, but i have not seen all of it.
toshiba + xoom is the only kernels with drivers i seen so far..
It doesn't seem like it's possible to find something with Android 5.1 (or later) and 2GB RAM. The only one I can find is the InDashNet unit except that one seems to still be in beta and buggy.
Doesn't anyone make something with 2GB RAM and a modern release of the OS? Getting real sick of my AppRadio issues, but I don't want to deal with the headache of 1GB RAM or an old OS.

These are legitimate concerns, I've been reading the forums and still haven't come to any solid conclusions yet either.
Same for me. Checking this forum almost daily since several months now to see if something with Android 5.1+ and 2GB RAM comes out... I will probably not wait much longer and just order the InDashNet unit...

I am sure I probably am over simplifying things here, but isn't there a way to add a bigger RAM chip to these things like a PC?

A lot of them are starting to make/test the 2GB version so I assume more to come later this year.

First listing doesn't specify which version of Android it is running. The second one says it's running 4.4. That's too old. I want 5.1 or later and 2GB RAM. That combination doesn't seem available.

No you can't do that. It's all soldered in, not using DIMMs.

Why not grab one thats 4.4 and usually cheaper than 5.1 and just upgrade it ? I've seen them on aliexpress not many but some..

As far as I know, they are not upgradable to 5.1. Only if you do a hardware upgrade/downgrade to an MTCD mainboard with 1GB RAM you can upgrade to Android 5.1.
So it seems there is an incompatibility between 2GB and Android 5.1 or there is some software development necessary to allow this... I think I saw a statement from Joying that they are working on it...
There is no comparability issue with 2gigs of ram and Android 5.x
Its called cheap. They want to reduce the cost of the hardware.

my guess is it's a MCU limitation. I am pretty certain RAM would not be a software (android) limitation. But the MCU is effectively a black box on these things that impacts just about every aspect of overall functionality. And the fact that the MCU hacked together by chinese/indian engineers with very low R&D budgets, we have the issues we have today. Someone needs to open source the MCU and allow it to be fully customizable somehow. I imagine the community here could come up with some fantasic mods, such as digital audio out, support for better internal hardware, better bluetooth integration, etc.
I am surprised that for this long, nobody has managed to fully decode the MCU.

They usually standard MCU chips. Someone would have to completely recode a working source. Which would be really impossible. I agree it would be nice to see one full MCU source code.

They write RAM: 1G. Several times in the description.
The problem with sellers on Aliexpress is that they even confuse RAM and ROM and falsely write 2GB RAM in title although everywhere in the article it says RAM 1GB.
Any other suggestions?

I wonder how come no one in the states has attempted their own Android head unit production. Why are we leaving it all to the Chinese? Why couldn't we produce our own hardware and mcu?

Ownice c200 is definitely only 4.4 at the moment.
We where promised an update but we still haven't had it.
Since then they released the c300 but it has only 1gb and still only 4.4
The reason they say it's only 1gb is it has a different cpu (not an rk chip like every other unit)
They still sell the c200 so i don't think they are dropping it.
Long story short. No 2gb lollipop at the moment. I've settled for 4.4 myself but i got my unit 18 months ago.

Too small of a market. Despite what you might gather from these forums, this is a very low quantity, niche market, and the active participants want things at rock bottom prices. US production costs, especially for such a small market, just aren't economically viable.
Honestly, If you aren't satisfied with the current crop of units (and I'm not), then your best bet is going to be some type of DIY project. I've got a Raspberry PI 3 and a SDR sitting on my workbench waiting to be worked on. You might also consider some variety of tablet install (I'm kind of torn between going this route and the rpi3).
But regardless of DIY, Chinese Headunit, whatever, this will ultimately boil down to software. Without a well thought out, extensible front end/UI, it will continue to be frustrating. Such software would be awesome if opensource, but I have my doubts. The in-dash-net units are supposed to be going that route, but I'm not holding my breath.

The funny thing about the software, is that all the different specialized parts of the software actually exist already in open source. The biggest hurdle is actually handling a phone call. The "back end" of this process, bluetooth HFP-client profile, is available in AOSP. There is a "demo" application for actually managing that backend available in codeaurora.
Aside from that, you also have AM/FM radio to think about, but that is fairly simple.
Honestly, the biggest part of this problem is the hardware.
Hi all,
So I'm new to posting on forums , but ill give it a go. I grew up with lots of knowledge for software, electronics and mechanics. I've been looking into these android head units and I got a guy to purchase one for his car project, engine, trans, exhaust, lights, brakes full out build. Thought this would be a nice touch with a custom boot logo. Anyways, obviously 2gb of ram isn't THAT much for these headunits.
So as far as I can tell from reading around, they are soldered onto the boards, however.. I have a proper BGA reflow station and was thinking of checking out what chips they are using, finding the specs and finally ordering a better chip from a semiconductor catalog, I've seen single DDR3 chips go to 8gb a chip. Theoretically your just "upgrading" the ram, right?
Thinking of looking around to start on a cheap unity (just in case) or if anyone has some buggy units out there that they wanna test it out on sell for parts or whatever. If it works Ill send it back! FREE UPGRADES...JK.
Any info on specs or any other knowledge is greatly appreciated!
Let me know what you guys think!
Hey did you end up finding a solution on upgrading your Head unit's RAM?
Solution is to buy a new unit. You will not go far with RAM upgrade without a CPU/OS/Storage upgrade even if it was possible to upgrade RAM. Also the cost won't justify the result, the complete units are so cheap already.
