Is Rev A a location thing? - Mogul, XV6800 General

I upgraded my phone to the new HTC ROM, and I NEVER have seen Rev A on my connection, it's the same "Ev" it always was. I have full bars, sis Rev A only available in certain locations?

The EV icon will stay the same, regardless of EV-DO revision, the only way you'll know if you're getting Rev. A service is if you get average more than 144kbps on the upload speeds, as Rev. 0 maxes out at that speed.
And yes, Rev. A service has been deployed in some locations and not others, if you're with Sprint, they have a coverage map online.

Best speed tethering?

I have DCD's 3.2.2 and use Internet Sharing to tether my laptop with Vista. My download speed is 535, my upload 35. Is there anything I can do to increase the speed?
that sounds about right for evdo rev0 speeds. Only thing that will increase your speeds is if you go into a evdo revA area. It seems that your area is not revA yet as you would have a much higer upload speed around 110-200kbs, if you were not in evdo coverage @ all your download speeds would be in the 90-115kbs range. All you can do if your posted speeds are for your home location is to wait it out till your area gets updated to revA speeds.
Looking at evomaps.com it shows I am in a RevA area - Carlsbad, CA (just north of San Diego).
It's evdomaps.com (evomaps.com doesn't exist)
Also, is there a way to tell if the phone is actually in Rev.A or Rev.0 mode?
Yep - missed that 'd'
I would like to know the same.
Rev A mode or Rev 0
Its all in the ROM if you have wm6 you have rev0 if you flashed up to wm6.1 you have revA

Cricket EVDO rev A

Is there a location we can go to to see if Cricket supports evdo revA in our markets? I get the symbol for 1X with a download speed of 932 kbs today. I guess another question is is there something we have to do to get revA? I am using DCD 3.2.6 with the data cab installed
Thanks
I would look at their coverage map. I am in the Portland OR area and it says that we are on a 3G broadband network. Makes sense as that is what my Motorola phone says "3G". You can always chat with their help desk. Maybe they might know, (good luck).

Checking HSDPA

Hey, I've got a (rooted) G1 on T-Mo contract.
I want to check if I'm getting the fastest internet I possibly can. I know Haykuro's build display an 'H' instead of 3G if you're on HSDPA, but I'm using JesusFreke's latest cupcake build and it's my understanding that that doesn't.
So the question is, how can I check whether I'm getting real super wow omg 3.5G internet (which presumably I can, living right in central London) or just the regular 3G?
I've wouldn't normally think twice, but I've read lots online about having to enable it and there seems to be a lot of confusion. Also, it would be nice to know when I'm on 3G and when i'm on HSPDA, given that JF's build (kickass as it is) doesn't include an icon for it.

download xtremelabs speed test from the market. then check your max speed against max 3g and min hsdpa speeds that you have since googled to find out. while on haykuros rom, i got the h icon and i have full 3g coverage here in kansas city kansas.
Ilm in the same boat at the moment. When running Haykuro's H build I have H on Orange UK, the about status of the network says Ilm running on HSDPA but nettraffic says I have no connection speed unlike UMTS (won't work in other words).
I'm currently on JF's ADP1.5 rom based on htc build and only get UMTS. It would be nice to be able to have HSDPA but UMTS is fine...
Hey aad4231, thanks for your reply...
I'm a little confused, I thought UMTS utilised 3.0g services whereas HSDPA uses 3.5g? When using JF, T-Mobile or Haykuro's G build the phone uses UMTS according to system information and netmeter and nettraffic. When I use Haykuro's H Build GPRS comes up, then UMTS and finally HSDPA. Data services work while on GPRS / UMTS but as soon as HSDPA comes up there is no connection speed in system info.
I'd love to have HSDPA speeds (with Orange UK I believe it's 3.6mbps or smthg) rather than UMTS as I use my G1 as a mobile router with Wifi-Tether.
Thanks in advance again!
Run a speedtest (e.g. http://i.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.html). If your downlink is greater than 384kbps, then you have HSDPA.
As been mentioned above, just because you do not have a H icon doesn't mean you are not connected via HSDPA. The H icon is present only in Haykuro HTC build because HTC added extra icons to indicate whether a 3G connection is HSXPA enabled or not. However, that does not mean that standard Dream software cannot connect via HSDPA. It does, but it will not indicate it. Again, confirm with speed test.
Just done a speed test using Xtremelabs speedtest from market. I noticed I'm now getting 843.5kbps since I flashed my G1 with JF's ADP1.5 last night. Prior to this I was only getting about 320kbps on JF's RC9/RC33 Builds.
Thanks for your quick reply and sorry for having to get you to explain again.

Thats pretty impressive, but as far as I know the different versions flash don't effect the speed. I believe that has all to do with the radio. Did you update your radio, that may have something to do with the increased speeds?

Actually the most likely scenario is just moment-to-moment variation in network usage. Packet-switched data services are usually delivered on a "best effort" basis. If you check the bandwidth at different times of day you will probably notice fluctuating numbers.

Yeah, Flashed the Radio with HTC's 1.5 from their Dream website. I do notice that speeds vary though throughout the day. In Mid-day I get about 400mbps but hadn't got 800mbps+ before, even in the evening.
Hot damn, it must be a low traffic day here in AZ. I just pulled down 1062kbits/s.
I just noticed that it says your network type on Settings>About>Status, so you can get an easy definitive answer rather than just running a speed test. Also has battery level which is nice. I made a homepage link to it on anycut for easy access

rev a enabled by 2.1

ok, so i had seen on another forum a code to get into a base menu for the eris
*#*#4636#*#*
going into the phone information showed rev 0 being used when i was running 1.5, after i did the update i did it again a couple days later and saw i was now running rev a, curious about this because a. i thought the eris was supposed to have rev a to begin with, b. not sure if the update enabled it or it was just a bad signal or something, i went to a friend that had not done the update yet, checked his before update, showed rev 0, did upgrade went to rev a
i have noticed a tad increase in internet speed, dont know what all this means, just interesting i think
Mine shows Rev .A now as well... I do not remember that drop down there at the bottom for preferred network type, strange that it lets you choose GSM. I wonder if these phones actually have the capability of connecting up to the ghetto blue network?
I believe before we were connected to EVdO rev A, however since 1.5 was 'modified' to support CDMA (not native till 1.6 ironically) it just did not display correctly in field test mode.
Nice to finally know for certain though!
GSM is built into the Android source. Essentially, CDMA is a "Branch" of a GSM master. For example, after a wipe in 1.5, my phone refused to connect to Verizon's network, saying a "SIM Card is not inserted or GSM Network unavailable". Whereas the problem was my phone just wasn't reprogrammed for my account.

Right, the cdma stack is included as of 1.6
so, does that mean that we should be getting better service now? as its "native" now, or what does that mean exactly

I can confirm that on 1.5 it says rev.0.
From Wikipedia:
The EV-DO feature of CDMA2000 networks provides access to mobile devices with forward link air interface speeds of up to 2.4 Mbit/s with Rev. 0 and up to 3.1 Mbit/s with Rev. A. The reverse link rate for Rev. 0 can operate up to 153 kbit/s, while Rev. A can operate at up to 1.8 Mbit/s.

cant get HSPA with DVP?

I know the DVP doesnt support HSPA+, however it *should* support HSPA I beleive?
When I activate the data function, I see the 3G indicator but never the 3G (H) indicator. Shouldn't I be getting the HSPA connection?
This is in the Seattle/Bothell area.
Thanks!
Do you know if the area you are in actually has 3g coverage?
My phone does display the H, but its only in a certain area of my house. Its where the 3g connection from the tower is (I think thats how it works). I also get 3G and E around the area. What I am saying is that you might be outside a 3g coverage area...
That is a certainly a possibility. I guess I'm trying to determine if:
1. It really is supported
2. Is there anythping special I have to do to make it work
It sounds like it is supported and you dont have to do anything but be in an HSPA coverage area...true?
Thanks!
BTW Anyone know where to find an HSPA coverage map?
My at&t dvp does use the hsdpa here in baton rouge. Something to remember is the H will be in "bursts", it never locks into H permanently.
And you are right, HSPA+ is not an option for the DVP.
HSPA reception is fixed in the upcoming FW update. With the new FW, you will be able to see 'H' most of the time if there is a coverage.
Awesome...thx for the input everyone.

Strange. I normal see the H, then the cellular data connection actually used, and 3G, then idle. On old 210 FW.
On a T-Mo DVP you will NEVER see 'H'. The ability to force '3G' all the time instead of "confusing" customers with this 'H' thing is one of the few customizations WP7 MOs can make, and T-Mo makes it.
It was the same thing with the HD2 (except that we had access to the registry, custom ROMs etc. to change it) and it's the same thing with the HD7.
Rest assured, you are getting HSPA if you are in an area with 3G coverage.

This is not a firmware issue, it's an MO customization issue.

I have both the Beta device (.212 FW) and the non beta (.206 FW) device on TMO and the Beta device shows H and the other one doesn't.
If its not a FW issue, the only reason i can think of is Dell has scrapped all the MO customization with the new FW.
How did you get both of these devices to 212? Were they retail devices with .105 which you then updated? If not, then might you have some internal-only device with different settings than an end-user would ever see?
I have 212 (updated from 206, updated from 105) and never see the H but I am in an HSPA coverage area and get solid 3G speeds. Same as previous experience with HD2 (and HD7).
I just got one of the unlocked 212 DVP w/ ATT bands. I've yet to see 3G at all. its always H.
unlocked tmo here (212) and get the H
