With all the custom programs out there for the mogul, I'm in heaven. So far most everything has worked great. I'm running DCD 3.0.1, with the newest radio. A few small issues, but for me nothing to get worked up about.
Recently, I did alot of researching into GPS software. I wanted a program that was kinda like a all in one. One GPS program to do it all. I've tried quite a few and settled on the Garmin XT. It does pretty much everything for mobile Gps. As for Geocaching or "on foot" GPS, I use Tracky.
Now with this in mind, I was noticing some of the things I've seen other people talk about. Jump Starting the GPS. Very critical, especially with garmin. So I decided to give that Astrolauncher program a shot. For Garmin, it works like a champ. Only problem I find is with the Time. The first thing I noticed was the garmin part switched to night mode in the middle of the day time. Didn't think much about it. I closed the program out and later on noticed the time was WAYYY off on the phone. Only way to fix it is to restart the phone. I can't seem to narrow the problem down. Is this a program that is being initiated with Astrolauncher? Or is it a problem with the Garmin GPS? Does anyone else notice this? When it does happen, if I restart the phone, then restart Garmin, it is fine. But it seems like its the initial startup where it happens.
Any ideas?
Just for info, I will do a review on my findings for all my GPS software I've played with.
Thanks for the ideas in advance.

I have stated before that VisualGPSce is my fav for this as it seems to lock the fastest for me. However, the new Sprint radio seems to lock for me in less than a minute on the highway every time. I rarely use VisualGPSce anymore.
If you can get TomTom, try that. I find it better and more user friendly than garmin. I do believe there is a way to turn off night mode within the settings on Garmin though.
I have not tried those two, but I will. I'm always willing to give new things a shot. As far as Garmin goes, I already have a Garmin Street Pilot, so I'm very familiar with how they work. I'm still baffled about this time thing. It doesn't do it all the time. I think if using Astrolauncher, to start the program, if it doens't lock like RIGHT away, the time goes to the GPS time which (Being that it's not locked yet), is wrong.
Make sense?

I didn't see a link to Garmin in the install for Astro, I thought only TomTom and iGuidance. It may not help you with Garmin, but having not used it I can't say. You may be better with another primer program.
While I am not using either of those aps, I would wonder if going through the setting, you should be able to turn off the 'time sync w/ satellites' and just rely on other means for setting the time. i.e. phone network, or synced computer.
On the other hand, I have been using navizon to prime my gps w/ no time problems.
You may want to give it a shot, you can even make a little money while traveling around...

Garmin does that to me only if I do not prime the GPS enough. I have been using GPS Test 1.04 because I am too lazy to find something better. I find if I wait long enough for it to find the first satellite, I don't have an issue with Garmin. If I launch GPS Test then immediately launch Garmin, I get the time zone change. I was going to try astrolauncher (that's why I'm reading this thread), but apparently I shouldn't bother... On to find something else.
Related
I've used both but I want to know what ppl here think.
The two things I live about iGuidance over TomTom is the accuracy of the map in my area and the ability to get the address from PIM.
TomTom's much better to me. I don't even really need to overclock TomTom but with iGuidance, I have to overclock my MDA to 240 (I should try higher).
I generally use iguidance over TomTom. The maps are generally more accurate and the POI list, specifically the restaurants, appear to be better in iGuidance. I also like the address/POI/general data entry methods (ie: street first) more.
TomTom is much prettier, runs much better, and gets more 'wow' points but as far as functional software, I'm an iGuidance guy.
iGuidance
I am a tech support for one of the PDA GPS solution company, I strongly recommand iGuidance over TomTom for it price, function, and user friendly. I like iGuidance giving me more information on voice prompt such as tell me the exact number of of highway exit and the number of the highway I need to turn to. It also tell me the destination will be on my left or right. The only think I like TomTom is the interface looks prettier that's about it.
does iguidance allow you to view in landscape mode? For some reason this is my preferred way. Maybe its because I got used to my parents Tomtom or something.
iGuidance works fine in landscape mode, but I still prefer it in portrait so I can see more of the road ahead when using the heading=up style navigation. As for the complaints of resource use, it always seemed to me that TomTom used far more than iGuidance and gave me more sluggish performance and a slower startup time. The Tomtom interface never won any points with me either with having to go through a few "pages" of settings to try and find what I wanted. You shouldn't have to flip through 3 pages of options (I think that's how many it was) just to exit the program.
My favorite part about iGuidance though is the customizable map regions so I can include only what I need.

great! does it allow you to change it from within the software like TT does, or do you have to rotate the screen in WM5 before loading it up? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm pricing out bundles from Semsons and just wanna know what I'm getting into.
I use both tom tom and i-go (http://www.i-go.com/en/index.php)
I find tomtom works better, I-go run slowly on the wiz
Does iGuidance have UK Maps?
IGuidance, even though it is slightly slower than tomtom, Is a lot nicer, but i will definatly have to go back to tomtom unless i can make iguidance not turn off the screen. With tomtom (.21) it kept the screen on so i could glance at it and see wtf was going on. With iguidance the backlight keeps going off and makes it impossible to read without really moving it close to my face. Is there any way around this? I have crawled all of the menus in iguidance. I would REALLY love to use iguidance all the time but it is a PIA when the screen keeps turnin off.
UK Maps for Iguidance
I am using Iguidance for North America but I would also like to know, does Iguidance have UK maps?
Any info please

First off, I have been using iGuidance for several years and have seen it steadily improve. The latest version has a number of substantial improvements: Displays more information at once. Better zoom in/out. Better menu system. At a $9 upgrade fee, I was pretty happy!
Now, as for the screen going dark, I think this is a function of whatever settings you have set in the control panels. I use PhoneAlarm and have a "Car" setting in which it never shuts off when on my charger.
And a question: Since I installed the latest version, it seems to talk like this: "Turn... right... in... 500... yards." That is, it enunciates each word well but with a sizeable pause in between words. Also, I installed to Storage Card, I wonder if that might be causing problems.
Otherwise it works great!

Mine does the same thing - though it seems to only be sometimes, I think the issue stems from the fact that it is basically looking up the word to say from a list of them, the ole wizard isnt exactly speedy - its a heck of a lot better when I OC to 252. Iguidance all the way. TomTom may be slightly prettier but has no more features and I love the fact that I load only the maps I need. If I live in NY why the hell do I have to have the entire map of Ohio or Colorado etc loaded? Its not like I am going to wake up one morning and find me and my car in them.

I read this problem on their site. I'm not going to go looking for the link again but if you turn off the data connection (EDGE or GPRS) it will work fine. I do this whenever I'm using iGuidance and now it speaks fluent English.
On the 8125 I go to connection manager and first click the icon to turn off push email. Then I click on the GPRS icon to turn that off also. Then it seems to work ok. Very often the 8125 will automatically turn the radio back on. If it does that I go back and turn it off while driving to get the voice back to normal.
It does seem odd that iNav did not try their software on a Windows Mobile before shipping it.

whoever has this issue, i think it's because of the wizards slow cpu speed or memory speed. i had this issue but ever since i upgraded to wm6...it is so fast at loading destinations, etc. ...i mean, FAST!
also i believe new iguidance v3.1 will be out at the end of may, customer service told me...
Just surveying how well the GPS on the Touch works for most people. It seem as though many people still have problems, even after the carrier updates and all the hacking done here. I personally could never get the GPS working consistently without using Alltel Navigator, which cost $10 a month.
My current theory is that the phone's radio injects noise into the GPS receiver, either because it shares an antenna with the phone, or for the same reason why a powerful radio signal (like driving past a transmitter tower) can overwhelm the front end of receivers that aren't even near the transmitter's frequency.
Evidence: If I launch Google Maps when I'm offline, and I can select "Use GPS" and avoid having Google Maps try to go online before it acquires at least 3 GPS satellites, it seems to lock on within a minute or so about 90% of the time.
If anything causes the phone to go online before I've acquired GPS, it almost never seems to succeed.
If I take/make a voice call, or engage in sustained data transfer, it almost always seems to lose the GPS signal.
If I pan/scroll the map and cause Google Maps to need a BIG chunk of data, it will probably lose the GPS signal.
I'd be interested to hear whether anyone else has noticed a similar inverse correlation between RF activity and GPS acquisition.
Hmmm, I haven't noticed any correlation between data and location, it's an interesting theory though. It takes me anywhere from a minute to 15 seconds to get a lock, and when occasionally satellite signal drops out, Google maps finds it again within 10 seconds or less. I'm a verizon user, btw, and I use GMaps, Live, and TomTOm7+GpsViewer.
Mine works great -
Mine works great - I have Garmin XT for turn-by-turn and it seems to find satellites pretty fast - The other day I decided to try a little experiment and I set up both my Sony GPS and my Touch and pressed "go" at the same time and the Touch GPS was just a fraction of a second behind the Sony (both from a cold start), which I think is pretty good - I have no problem using Windows Live, but for some reason the most recent Google Maps doesn't work as well, it can take forever (seemingly) to lock.
baud rate
after doing a little more
research, i found a post
suggesting to use the
57600 baud rate in google
maps. it worked and i got
a lock within about a minute
sorry bought the english
im typing on my phone here
at work.
my 6800 locks consistanly with in 15 seconds. Just bought the wife a 6900 and its been taking about 1-2 minutes. Not sure why that is.
i had a lot of trouple with my gps being inconsistent and what not. this post on ppc geeks fixed the problem now i connect 6-11 satsellites in 30 seconds or less. duno if it'll help u but u can try it:

not taking any credit for that guide it was pmed to me im pretty sure all acknowledgements are made within the post itself.
Use this to get your GPS working well...
My GPS works excellently with Google maps, as well as with iGO8. I can lock into about 8 sats in 15 seconds or so using the AstroGPSLauncher that AstronusX created and posted at this thread.
Took me just a couple of minutes to create the shortcut and put it in my program list.
I might lose satellites in iGO8 if I get a phone call and take it, but it will get back the sats after a minute or two once the phone call has completed.
Hope this helps.

Do you have M2D plugin?
I have NFSFAN Rom and Igo8 is really pain. If you switch to Today or just phone - there is no way to get IGo back. Have to Reset.
Yes, I've been running iGo8 on NSFFAN's 1.08 ROM. I agree that it dogs down damn bad when I get a call while running iGo, but I can get it back up without having to reset if there isn't anything else running. It does take quite awhile to get sat locks back though after switching over to phone. It might be quicker to close out of iGo and restart.
Thanks for all the helpful post guys, that 57600 baud rate didn`t last to long. It was just as inconsistant as anything else I tried. I`ve heard about the Shadow Tech`s Fix for a while now but never tried it till last night. I am having some trouble with the dialing ##3424 step. I`ve tried the different 3424 numbers, and using task manager to open Dmrouter.exe under /DIAG parameters. Nothing happens on my phone, and I don`t see HTC Diag in Device Manager on XP. I have another post on the Shadow Tech Fix thread, but if anybody here knows what I`m doing wrong I`d appreciate a little info.
BTW I`m using NFSfans alltel 1.02 rom

If you go into windows and execute Dmrouter.exe it should, it may not change anything on your screen. Easy way to tell is if you have an activesync connection, execute it, and if activesync disconnects then your in it. Another way is to check task manager, and see if it is running.
There was a problem with the driver for the Vogue in WModem. I found a thread with the fix:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=462712
Valahalla? I know it has to do with GPS just wondering what it is
Phone shows up as Palm treo modem
I got dmrouter.exe working, but in vista it shows up as palm treo modem after drivers are found and installed. I`ll try again in XP and see if it happens again.
Wow I finally got this to work (Shadow Techs Fix)
It took about a day and a half, but I finally got it!
1.) I flashed back to Official Alltel 6.1 Rom and skipped customizations.
2.) I followed the steps in this thread http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=36377&highlight=shadow-tech+agps
3.) Reflashed back NFSFAN`s 1.02 Rom. I then tested it out and 10 seconds later I had 8 satellites locked on me.
Thanks to everybody who helped me out here with your posts. I started this thread as just a kinda survey to find out if I was not alone in having so much difficulty making my phone work as it should, and ended up a very happy Touch owner.
on alltel
it almost never works. shadow-tech's fix helps immensely
im in dominican republic
and i never manage to get a gps signal.
=/ is it me or the phone?
or the fact that this island is worst then the one in LOST
I checked the accuracy of the GPS on my phone about a year ago- Sometimes I work with surveyors, so we matched my vogue against a survey grade GPS to determine how off it was- My phone was +/- 3 feet (1m) in latititude and +/- 10 feet (3m) in longitude. I think that's pretty damn good. This was in a refinery in NJ, USA, with lots of big steel tanks around.
First I was using gps toggle, now I'm running NSFANs 6.5 v8 with gps viewer. I never have trouble getting a lock after about a minute of warming up.
Concerning the Shadow tech fix some of you guys have used here : http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=36377&highlight=shadow-tech+agps
I was wondering if this fix has already been incorporated into all the cooked ROMs for the Vogue that have come out since March '09?
OK Guys I was searching this forum and not only this but could not find any answer or tip to my problem, so as far as i do not like to start new thread here we go....
It is a bit weird as it started to happen recently...my Garmin XT working ideally with TOPO maps when u hiking but as soon as i get into a car and connect my HD to power and try to navigate home it starts to loosing the plot... basically it will find the route and start navigating and then suddenly loosing GPS fix and switch screen off sometimes, and even once or twice unload itself so phone went back to main screen. also once it lost fix i can see that Garmin switching between full screen and full window view...as i can see top bar every now and then.
contacting Garmin is a waste of time....as they did not offer any solution except hard resetting the device, and i wont do that, to much work to put back everything together and not enough time.
if anyone have a clue what it might be please share ur thought, and give me a tip to sort this out.
I'm using non modified HD with standard WWE version on Orange UK.
Thanks for any help
PS. For MOD, do not know if I posted in right place so if need to be moved, just move it.
Oh and I thought my Garmin was going crazy ! Actually Sygic is working fine with me except that I get some lags sometimes but it is all fine. But yeah tell me about it ... I tried Garmin and it looked for me better with much more POIS than Sygic but few days ago I was driving and suddenly the software started to go into other direction, like it was tracking something else. I think it is a bug with the software maybe. Thank God I am not the only one aware of many things going on with my HD
have u ppl tried 1.13.25.24 radio rom??
with this update... getting fix is very fast (basically it does not search for com ports, shows u connected when u start GMXT).
only drawback is that u can not see the satellite bars in info section.
used gps for short distances (@ 140kmph not much lagging and no disconnection). maybe i'll go for a long drive this weekend... then i'll know if there is a problem of disconnection or lagging etc.
With TomTom i get the same problem, however i don't know what the problem may be because A-GPS is turned off, but it has happened twice where it would take 4 times as longer to find the signal, and whenever it did it would go find then lost.
Soft Resetting fixed it up however i did notice my QuickGPS was not up to date anymore, must have went out of date the day before and possible cause for it acting up.
Try updating QuickGPS, might fix it up and be sure to have A-GPS off.
still no solution

i did forgot to mention that my A-GPS is already switched off. the problem is that Garmin keep switching between full screen and full window view and i suspect that my be the bottom of losing fix in the car... i want to stress out that while walking & hiking i have no such problem..... ONLY IN THE CAR and that is most frustrating.
and changing radio....well i'm not convinced as this could halt my phone if something go wrong and i cannot let it happen, as it's not only a toy but business tool, so i rather dont play with it.
any solution????

Changing radio won't halt your device. As long as you have Hardspl on your phone beforehand you'll be fine!
And pelase report back if it does solve your problem
Is this a solution????
Hi there, I see we lost some posts over here....so again latest update...
On the way to work this morning I tried garmin with Intermediate Driver and it worked!! but....there always has to be some but....I saw increase in lag...also i did it a bit different way then usually as I did not connected HD to power... will test it again with power connection tomorrow.
i have extensively tested gps of touch hd while driving from 0 to 120 km in open highway
i never lost the fix
it kept locked to satelites but major problem was battery drain
so i have to disconnect gps latter on
i belive with gps on and satelite fixed driving around 80 to 100 km battery with die with in 2 hours .
otherwise there is lag of 5 to 7 km/hr in speed calculated via gps and its normal
my SiRF III CHIP based cowon q5 gps also shows 5 to 10 km /hr differance from actual speed of car
its normal i belive
laggy but working

from what i experienced earlier with garmin i can say that lag become much bigger...now when i'm past the junction, on the map i suppose to be either on or even before the junction... never had that before so i suspect that intermediate driver might be responsible for that. also i can say that when using tomtom i have no such experience.
wanted to ditch tomtom but with such a laggy response i will have to use both... garmin for off road navigation and tomtom for car navigation.
the only thing i can confirm is that using intermediate driver solved switching between full screen and full window problem as well as loosing gps fix... at least for me. but u get bigger lag instead....
Okay so now that I have my vibrant I tested it out (only a few times) but I did test it in different applications, websites, and maps and navigation. Yes in the gps and compass apps it doesn't pick up at all compared to my slide BUT in every other application, on google where it finds your location, on yelp, movie phone, maps, and navigation it finds my location each and every time. It doesn't get me lost, it doesn't show me going in a different direction, and it doesn't show me somewhere else.
What if the configurations or settings are different with samsung, what if the third party app is not completely accurate? Why else would every other program find my location if the app says I am not found by even 1 satellite? I think the"fix" is just a change of setting that helps the app not the gps or the phone.
Time will tell but for me it us working fine for now.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well you can do gps tests within the os that say basically the same thing...
Ive used my gps with google navigate nermous times with no problem. in fact, it guided me on a 160mile trip just fine... What problems are people having with their gps?
Well, I've only had the phone for a day, so I'm still getting used to the quirks coming from a G1. GPS so far is the biggest disappointment. Android has been pushing location based stuff since the beginning, so the lack of a solid GPS is really screwing up some of my favorite apps. Locale for instance, it's worthless. It can't ever find me. The G1 always worked fine with it on Donut, Eclair, and Froyo.
Google Maps is the ONLY app I have that seems to even be able to get a rough idea where I am, and even then its circle is pretty big, about 4 city blocks. That's not GPS, that's network location, and it's fine for what it is, but not good enough when there aren't a lot of cell towers around. At home, it puts me out in the middle of a corn field. All the time I'm in maps, the GPS icon is up there blinking at me, telling me it can't lock. I've seen it work a couple times, for a short while. In GMaps and in GPS Test. But it takes a LONG time. The G1 could get a lock indoors in about 10 seconds. The Vibrant takes minutes, even with the A-GPS turned on in the test menus. That's insane. And it's not any better outside with a clear sky view. That might be acceptable, if it could hold the lock, but it doesn't.
Even stranger, in GPS Test, I get a single colored bar saying it's using that signal. There are 6 more with the same or higher signal strength being ignored. Very odd. Something is wrong with this GPS. It could very well be software, but Samsung needs to get on this and fast. If I can't find a way to get acceptable GPS performance within my 14 day period, I will likely return it. That will really suck, as otherwise I really like the device, but I need a decent GPS.

This has been my experience as well, and I found the same thing when trying a friend's phone. If only T-Mobile/Samsung would acknowledge that there is a problem and say they are working on it...
No problem here
But as I came from the G1 I use Google Maps exclusively. I haven't had a single problem with it. Inside my house I can get a fix on my location on the map, exactly where it should be. Are you guys using the TeleNav?

I have the same issue... I can only ever lock on to 1 sat. This is not right. My G1 would lock on to many birds.

I wonder if GPS Test is either wrong about that, or more likely, getting bad data from the OS or GPS driver. IIRC they are just parsing the NMEA data from the GPS driver, so "garbage in, garbage out". You don't get 20ft accuracy with 1 satellite being used.
I fooled with the settings in the "GPS fix 101" thread and got the thing working decently. Took a number of tries, and we'll see if it keeps working over time.
This really is something that TMO and Samsung should acknowledge and at least promise a fix for. Preferably with a close release date. And we shouldn't have to wait for Froyo either, get us a fix for JUST the GPS and a lot of people would be VERY happy. Well, that and the compass, that thing is even more worthless than the GPS before the fixes.
For the poster with Google Maps working, did you try with network locations disabled? Is the GPS icon in the status bar flashing or solid? If it's flashing, you DON'T have a GPS lock. Maps seems to be really good at using the network location stuff. I also enabled Skyhook in the GPS settings screen and Maps really seems to like that. Doesn't help with GPS performance though.
This thread is idiotic.

Wow.. that statement was idiotic. Maybe you aren't having the GPS issues that others are having but this thread is helping me debug and decide weather or not I'm keeping the Vibrant or returning it.
You guys are not alone. There is obviously something wrong with either the hardware, or the software. Either way, the buyer's remorse period is halfway through, and neither company has said so much as a peep.
I will definitely be returning my device by the time the remorse period expires. What a shame that would be, because I really love this screen. All it would take is for T-Mobile and Samsung to acknowledge the problem, and state that a fix is on the way.
Here's my post, detailing my contact and findings with the two companies.
It's been a few days now, and I've heard nothing back. Never a good sign.
EDIT. Got it working

hi.
It seems now that every 2.3 based ROM supports GPS, and people say they get a very fast lock.
But I was never able to get a lock with any ROM, I have tried several versions of MIUI and several versions of CM7.
The only ROMs I am able to use GPS in, are Froyo based.
Even there, it takes around 5 minuted to get a lock.
I did the hardware fix half a year ago, it helped very much because I was using Froyo then (it took only 5 minutes vs 15 minutes to lock) but now it doesn't lock at all.
Any solution?
Thanks.

i applied that fix and noticed no improvement, unfortunately. i had great hopes for it from reading the comments others had left about success using it.
the gps on my vibrant (running CM7) is quite odd.. it seems to 'know' where i am, but won't ever get off of the 'searching for gps' message, and of course, won't switch gears to the point where it actually tells me where to go. but if i want to look at my location on my phone and follow the 'map' it displays, or read the directions, it sort of works, in a hinky sort of way.
Try a program called GPS Aids from the market - Ive had mixed results with it.

I think that you are using the AGPS function, which uses the WiFi and mobile network to determine your location. It is much less accurate than GPS, which doesn't work.
About the GPS fix and GPS AIDS, I will try later and post the results, thanks!

that makes sense.. its just getting rough position with the mobile network.. (i usually have wifi antennae off)
last night i downloaded a gps test tool from the market... ZERO satellites... and mine worked perfectly when i was running Axura. i'll probably be going back there very soon.
