Hello! I recently bought the xda orbit 2 and I have updated in the original rom of HTC touch cruise. The problem is with the fm radio, which has very poor reception. Can anybody help?
What did you expect from a FM radio without proper antenna?
Sascha
I can compare with other mobile phones woch have fm radio and is worse!
I agree....much worse than my previous Artemis
any idea on how to make the radio work without the headphones? with the charger cable plugged in for example?
I usually use the htc extusb to 3.5mm headphones adapter. It works (even without the headphones) but on certain stations the reception sucks.
I had the same problem. I bought this http://www.expansys.no/htc/p_htc_item.aspx?i=154771 and the problem is gone. Nearly crystal clear without an old pot. meter for adjusting sound.

hey lucky folks with HDs ;-)
how does the FM Radio work on the HD? Do you need to use the headset as antenna, like on the polaris? Or does the HD have built in antennas?
boba
antenna
you have to use your earpiece as antenna. No build in fm antenna
And it has to be the one that comes in the box. You can't use a Touch or Diamond headset. Which I thought was odd...
But yah, the 3.whatever mm jack in the top of the handset is used for the antenna.
Hi,
I don't use the ones that come in the box. Just use my own headphones. Radio works fine

Tested the radio on the Touch HD at a local store with my own earphones and it worked great...

Phew, thanks for the correction. I want to use my own better set of headphones and still use the radio.
And it works fine with a 3.5 <> 3.5 lead (for use to plug into a car radio or audio input) using the loudspeaker.
So in a strong signal area, it will work fine with 3.5 plug + short wire

According to the Touch HD manual:-
Output
Select whether to use the device Speaker or Wired Headset to listen to the radio.

Yes, but first plug in an antenna
The radio program is really nice you can change between speaker/phones with one easy finger friendly button.
What can you say about the quality from the fm Radio. I canĀ“t get a RDS Signal, or it is still available only for 2 - 3 seconds.

D'ya reckon that would work for BT headphones too (after plugging in a 3.5mm jacked antenna that is)?... I have a feeling the answer is no... hmmm.
do you have a cab of FMradio? I want it for my xperia, panel sucks
Even using a stereo plug radio works fine. Then the only choice is explicitly set device speakers for radio. Even in case of active AD2P connection, the sound is only played through device speakers or wired headphones.
Normally when using bluetooth headphones I insert a 3.5 Jack(just the jack no headphones on it) to make sure that device speakers will not start banging if the bluetooth headphones run out of battery or get disconnected for some reason. And in city center this seems to be enough to make radio work for certain channels though since bt is not used, not much benefit in having it.
So noticed it won't let you use the included FM radio without headphones plugged in as they act as an aerial. Was wondering from people who use headphones more often, do you find it improves data rrcrption az well?
No, completely unconnected aerial. The data/phone aerial(s) are inside, there is no FM aerial, the wire of the phones becomes the aerial.
Adding to that - not all headphones will just work as FM aerial. You will need to use the default HTC headset as far as I know to get a signal.
From other posts I've seen on this forum, it appears that the FM radio on the HD2 is not nearly as good as the one in the HD. I used the HD for well over a year and the radio worked well, and I used it every morning. However, on the HD2 the radio signal on the station I use has noticeably more static.
Now, something interesting I noted. I was not using the HTC headset but a Koss headset that is much more comfortable. I tried the OEM HTC headset, and the radio seemed to be better!
Since the wired headset acts as the antenna, does anybody know if the OEM headset has a better antenna function than others? Or, does anybody know of a more comfortable headset (the OEM headset feels like I've got a couple square pegs hammered in me earholes) with better radio reception?
Cheers

Have you got BsBTweaks installed by any chance? It has a radio reception improvement tweak at the flick of a slider.
Radio De-emphasis? Didn't think that caused better reception of the original signal.
Yep, BsB is installed. Actually, turning on the FM tweak seems to create more static.
I did a test with my old HD just now. Same station, same headset, no static on the HD but lots of static on the HD2.
EDIT: found out if you put in a regular 3.5mm headphone, the FM transmitter should also work guess you can do it any way you want!
so let me get this right, if you get a 3.5mm jack off some headphones, i can plug that in and the radio will work?

Yeah, I just tried it on a Sony headset and an ipod headphone set and they both triggered the FM to work. I think the FM can be triggered with software to work but the reception will be crappy without extra wire coming out to catch the signal.
Great experiment ! Easy solution ! Can now uninstall all internet-radio apps and get my local radio station w/o headset.
Tx !
Personally I think it's just a gimmic to buy HTC's headset, don't fall for it guys! Use your own equipment that will sound better and fit more comfortably!
I could only pick up a couple of local stations like this, and we have a huge transmitter only a few miles away.
Went back to a full length set of headphones and did a rescan
and they were all back....

The whole wire acts like an antenna. There is no dedicated antenna for FM. That's how FM works since it's short range and hig frequency unlike the older AM low freq signals which need a more specialised antenna.
For good FM reception, a good wire will suffice.
Nice i'll give it a try, but first thing i would like to know is how did you get your sound so high, been lookin every ware for a cab file or a hack, any info would be GR8
Can the fm radio become a fm transmitter? Dumb question I know.

Hardware wise there is no reason why not but the software doesn't exist.

Another question here, Why can not we use the Fm Radio without headset? Does not this phone have an antenna for Radio?
It's so annoying because I am using a bluetooth headset and Desire HD insistently asks for wired headset for signal.
FM antena
Hi, I think that this is a usual think that mobile phones doesn't have a FM antennas built in. It uses your headphone wire as the antenna.

Exactly. FM transmission is using wavelength of about 3 meters, so the antenna should be much bigger than the phone itself to give you a good reception. You can try to fabricate something out of a 3.5 mm jack and a wire, but the results will be more than doubtful. And in top of that the phone will most probably recognize it as a headphones set, so you'll have to route the sound to your BT headset, not the antenna.

Even though we manage to establish a antenna as you said the phone directly gives the sound to it and unfortunately eliminates the bluetooth sound transfer. It's really really annoying.
Briefly you can not listen to Fm Radio with your bluetooth headset, you have to use a wired headset.

Hello dr.m0x, merry christmas,
not only the antenna is quite different for fm radio, the complete transmitting hardware needs a different part of hf amplifier for fm frequencies. Software doesn't help here.
The original headset seems to be optimized as fm antenna, tried another headset but fm radio had poor radio reception.

Additional info.
DHD's FM radio receptin quality is really poor compared to Sony Ericsson WM600 bluetooth headset (including radio).
