Only WM5 version has been tested by me, I don't have a WM2003 or WM6 device to test them but they should work. Zip files have inside a cab, it will set SSContact as default contact app in right softkey. If you don't want it install RemoveSoftKey.cab and softreset the device or just extract file exe or see faqs how to change registry to remove it

ok I gave it a spin. My Device is a Cingular 8525 (US) running WM6 (Black 3.01).
The first thoughts:
1. Formating of Contacts. the app shows lastname firstname instead of lastname, first name.
2. I am not seeing all my contacts or its not listing all the contacts in alphabetical order.
3. When I select a contact with my finger or the stylus, nothing happens.
4. It seems that the app is pulling Company info in some instances and contact name in others..very weird.
Suggestions:
It would be cool if you could add/import pictures from the contacts

I think you have a good basis here just continue to work at it..good luck
- application is compiled for WM5 not tested on WM6 so i can't be sure all works properly there.
- Order is guaranteed by List Control and API of Windows CE so it's not my procedure but I'll check... be sure u don't have some space before names.
- Contacts, SMS and Phone are not enabled (it's only a test application not a complete application) so they can only be scrolled but u can't select them
- Yes it display company names when company name is present.
About suggestions :
- Pictures are too much heavy and it should make very slow scroll procedure and I Think they should be too much small to be really usefull.
- I'm not planning to add a filtering by categories at the moment, next step is add a Sort by Firstname and Sort by Lastname

my notes:
1- i tried icontact before ,not working with me
2-SSCONTACT, when i tape the contact nothing happen
3- i see that the interface is good by showing the 2 icons of dialing&message beside the name but again nothing happen upon tapping any icon
4- it scrolls only with the nevagtion key of the ppc not by finger!!!
5-the keyboard is stuck and not closed upon tapping except closing X buuton of the program

I don't know... it's strange in your device not works iContact and also my app maybe u have some program have make some conflict with them... you should scroll with fingers... keyboard shouldn't stuck ...u can close it tap on OK button... icons and contact aren't enabled it's only a test application, it's the first time I have this report.

I think the most natural way to sort is outlook's "file as" since we already declare what we want to see as "file as"
I've already added sorting by first or last name at the moment tomorrow I'll post the new version, meanwhile if u found bugs on this report me

got me all thinking about developing for ppc myself - any chance that you post sources? how difficult ... how time consuming is it?
at the moment no. Some parts are more difficult than other but I'm new in ppc programming and first I've to learn to apply so it taking me much time.
It's great you opened up your own thread. I love to beta test new and developing apps. Even though my device is slower, I will still give comments on your app.
The app so far is running pretty smoothly. A bug I found is with the keyboard quick search feature. There is a person on my contact list named, let's say "Zack"...when I type Z it does not go to the name. This happens for a few other letters with the keyboard as well.
Will you implement phone numbers showing up for names under just Company?
Also, what are the letters on the left side of the screen suppose to do??
during Quick Search with Keyboard you don't see people in the bottom of list just because Keyboard cover them... but search work if u tap Ok you should see them selected , I have to think a solution for that. Company phone is already show but u have to set Business Phone for Company contacts.. Letters on left side can be touched with stylo... letter set focus in first item that start with that letter.

I see what your saying. But still, when im at the top of the list than type Z on the keyboard, the list still doesn't scroll down to focus on that contact.
The phone number for the company in my contacts is put in the "Company tel." spot. This app can't read the company tel?
The letters on the side of the screen are too small to have real functionality. They are too hard to tap.
Will this work on WM2003?
I have TyTN with WM6 so it's not working properly I hope you'll make it work on WM6 soon. I would like to see some feature I'm missing in both iContacts and your app could you make it neverending scrolling? I mean that when you go to the end of contacts (Z) and scroll down more it will take you to the beginning (A) and the same form beginning (A) to the end (Z)? I hope you'll understand what I mean
sorry guys I don't have a device with WM2003 and WM6 so i cannot test it on them, I can compile and run on emulator but it's not the same thing... btw I'll try only when WM5 version is complete.
@freeyayo50, search doesn't work inside items but always from first char... the control in Windows Mobile can't search into substring... that's sad but i can't do nothing, so if your friend is called Zack and you don't remenber is Lastname i suggest to change order from Last First to First Last and perform search with new order, i've attached a new version.

What it does:
- "classic" finger scrolling
- tapping the contact make appear a screen with contact info (photo, name, phone, sms and mail). Selecting one option launch the default compose dialog or make the call. You can also change the contact picture from the detail directly.
- display contact photo if present (in the list and the contact detail).
What's different:
- if you press you finger on the left or right border of the screen it will allow you to select the letter you're searching for, release the finger, it will show you the contact starting with this letter. For me that's the way to go in touch interface: release should trigger the event, push should only provide visual feedback, I'd like a visual kb like this.
- the contact detail is not the standard one, you can show only the information you want (and it's animated .
- the list is animated (scrolling) and the transition between list and detail also.
Settings file:
There is an .ini file that you can create in the directory where the program reside. It contains color, font and image settings. See the setting.ini provided in the zip file.
To install, copy the unzipped file to your ppc and run it. Should be enough. Tested on WM6 only, apparently it also run on WM5. Sorry for 2003 owner, as I don't have such device, I'm unable to test.
Please inform me, before publishing this app on any other website... (a mail to qpouplard // gmail.com will be enough). I'm not against it at all, but I'd like to know it.

Guybrush, can you elaborate what's wrong about scrolling (I mean I agree with you, but on the other side, I have a smartphone for 5 days now... I don't have lot of experience about what's "good" or "bad").
You want left index to be longer? for now it's 26 pixels, maybe 30 will do the job?
Related to the ugliness or character, can you post a screenshot? I only have an HTC touch to test (and the emulator).
that's a screen as appear on my device... about left index look screenshot of my SSContact, i think it's good like that... Scrolling is slow... and not fluid... don't give me good feelings.
I've have a little problem, I can call using the Call button, but the send Sms button doing nothing ....

Very nice work,it looks good by adding contact photo and the idea of side contact to call or to send SMS.
The alpha.index is working but as the application is to be used by finger so it is very difficult to use this index by finger.
Second thing is the scrolling is heavy not fluid,the best i think to scroll is icontact of Larna ,it scrolls very nice.
So keep it up and we all wait for another release with fixed bugs.

myRIGHT: regarding performance, what PPC are you using? How many contact do you have? (I have like 100 on mine). How is the sliding to contact detail going? (it's important, if sliding is bad, I'll have to think about a totally different method).
For the alpha index, my idea was exactly to make it usable by finger: its very hard to point to the right letter, but it's rather easy to move your finger to the right position, so the idea is: tap anywhere on left (or right) part of the screen, and move your finger until you're on the right letter, then remove the finger, that's it. That's also why you get a visual feedback (ugly for now, will look better soon).

Like MyRIGHT said, I feel the scrolling in larna's icontact is perfect, so if you could get that kind of feel it would be great!
For now though the biggest thing bugging me is the way it sorts the names, File As always seems the prefered way (again like in larna's icontact). If you could fix this I would definitaly use this instead of icontacts!
Good job on the abc index too, maybe you can make the "area" on the right hand side of the screen a little wider (thumb width )
Maybe you could also make the letter that shows up in the middle of the screen more obvious (coloured background or so).
I like how you can you use the virtual keyboard to jump to the first letter!
I LOVE the way the screen slides to the left when you click on a name. It's a lot faster than waiting for the "default" screen to show up too! Maybe the screen that comes in can look a little better like you said though.
The bottom buttons (search and new) don't seem to do anything, but maybe you havent gotten around to that yet. Maybe you could have the app fullscreen and have 4 buttons at the bottom which launch speed dial, call history, the keypad and new contact or so ?
It's also interesting how the d-pad always scrolls all the way to the top of the list no matter what button you press

My apologies, the SMS send button work fine, it's just take a while to load up. . With my Hermes and WM6 - I like the speed of scrolling it's just feel right - ( just like larna's icontact) .
I've to agreed with others, the A_Z index is so tiny, may be if it can be triggered wih another screen A_Z ( more like the contact detail but appear from the left side this will make finger buttom easier).
It's very very nice, but it can't be displayedcorrect om a htc universal (vga screen). If you could make a vga layout it would be perfect...
I think if the scrolling spped and a few graphics were added it would be great! i am a graphics artest, tell me the size and format of the images for things like the letters on the side and i can cook somthing up for u

For now I don't use image, only drawing text, however I'd like to have:
- A correct layout for contact detail (I can extract something from a mockup, for instance, you draw a beautiful sample for a given contact, and I'll try to integrate it).
- An image for the preview letter from the A_Z, something like a bubble pointing to the letter.
Regarding the size, the A_Z is 10*320, each contact is 220 * 32. For the contact detail, it just has to fill the screen.
Apparently it maybe great to think about VGA devices, I don't have one, but I suppose I can use the emulator (however, I fear performance would suffer).

Great and useful App ! it run smoothly and scrolling speed is acceptable on my Hermes with WM6. Only 3 things i noticed that need enhancement:
1) contactmanager can't be minimized with the 'ok' button on Hermes, closing it tapping the 'X' works.
2) If the contact saved phone number in 'work tel', it wouldn't be displayed with your contactmanager (list and detail)
3) the 'new' and 'search' softkey is not responding ?
btw, scrolling at the border for first letter is really useful UI

Regarding work tel, I added work tel to the list of phone number he tries to find, but I really should handle various phone number.
For the new and search, I just put them "for testing", they do nothing... but my question is: what button would be actually usefull?

It has a 'OK' button (most PPC phone has this button) to minimise the app (running in memory but hidden from the screen) instead of closing, it would be good if contactmanager can be minimised.
maybe a Exit softkey button would be useful instead of 'search'
Now see I like the scrolling MUCH better in this than iContact. It might be able to slow down a bit slower but the speed that it maxes out at is good. In iContact, sometimes when I scroll it goes too fast or straight to the bottom of the contact list. That is pretty fast given that I have 100 contacts.
My only issue is that there is only one number shown (which you pointed out), and that the search and new buttons are not functional. This is a big pain with the iContact app... no ability to add a new one. I am on the CUSTEL Ultimate WM6 ROM. This is a great foundation for a contacts app!

But I've no idea if my app works on a Treo.
There is also some funkiness going on with the scroll wheel on the 8525. If you move it the contact goes straight to A and then the screen is unresponsive for a bit to finger scrolling.

Hola amigos, since I don't use wisbar anymore I'd love to find such a launcher.
I want cascaded, direct access to the (initially submenu) programs list
I don't need to have recent apps or settings (builtin start menu already does the job quite well).
Cubes are useless to me (too slow, uncomplete lists, don't use the contacts fav. page)
Do you know something like that, or is it still to develop ?

And at last, does someone know how to make a shortcut that launch builtin start menu ?

SmallMenu seems to be the perfect candidate for you. the start menu that SmallMenu uses is customizable, so you can take out the Recent Programs and Settings as you wish, as well as adding other items such as Running Tasks or Task Management Tools, among other things.
or WisBar Lite.

Wisbar lite is too slow at scrolling application list and can't directly display programs (one need to open the programs submenu).
SmallMenu is really cool. It's uglish, but it does its job well.
I may write another launcher to fit exactly what I need with a better look.

Above all I want bigger buttons (I should have mentionned it before), for easy thumb operation.
Also a better look would be nice.
So I need a bigger font (that looks better), separators between each row and a gradient background for each row as well.
The ability to have running tasks displayed in a submenu is also great, and so would be the closing icon if it was, once more, bigger.
Or much better, if we could close the application with tap 'n hold !

Small menu is great and all. But isnt there any program out there that can cascade the start menu and dosent give you all the extra stuff thats in small menu and wisebar lite?
I just want a program that cascades the start menu. no task manger, no soft reset, no battery meter and so on....

You can disable them. I don't think your concern is about 20/30kb storage space ?
I've been using SmallMenuPlus for a few months and find it too useful to be without. Organize your programs into like directories and it's too easy.
With it being an execute file you can link it to a hard button, cube, shortcut or even a FTouchFlo launch swipe
Now I have no use for the default WM Start bar except to get into Settings (SmallMenu seems to forget where this is on every S/R).
I have no problem navigating and selecting with my thumb, although slightly larger icons wouldn't be rejected.
Taping the small icon in the top left corner can be hit-and-miss sometimes so I made my own larger one and select it with the 'Use external skin for start button' option. This way I can't miss it but still leave a little room to get the default Start bar if I need to. Make your icon 25 high and any width, mine is 42x25.

alternatively you could try psw indibar 2.7.0 for cascading menus, (have tried the lot and to me, this one's the keeper), and it tops up by giving ram and or battery meters on the top bar, or anywhere you want.
Customization is a pain in the beginning, but once done you;ll be happy

This is something I am very interested in, if that gives you any motivation.
I too used to use Wisbar but it was far too hit and miss for my liking. Sometimes it would load in, sometimes not. It all depended on teh theme in use at the time as it was sensitive to some, not sensitive to others. In the end I pulled it.
Will keep a watching brief on this thread to see how you get on.

Oh yea this program rocks. I searched around for QuickMenu 2.6. from what i found out, he is working on an english version but having problems.

Not to sound like a commercial but if plain old vanilla cascading start menu is what you want then why not use WA3 with the default theme which looks pretty much like the WM6 default and disable all the bells and whistles?
I've never heard of a case where the default theme wouldn't load -- it was usually the fancy aftermarket themes that added all of the extra graphics and sounds that caused the loading problems.
can't you just use wm5newmenu?

iContact only for browsing contacts and make calls/sms with
standard WM apps.
PocketCM with above and threaded SMS function inside itselfs.
Both progs are skinnable and need less memory...so, take what you like ?

icontact loads a little faster for me
depends what you need. If you have WM6.1 you prob dont need threaded text pcm offers and have to shut that part off. Icontact runs on less than 100kb RAM while PocketCM takes up .5-1mb. I prefer icontact for basic contact scrolling and initiating calls/sms/emails
well, i've tried both and do have some comment :
POCKETCM is a complete application and you can have many choice of theme, but one pity thing is when you try to edit the contacts information, there is no "copy" and "paste" feature which I think is most required feature.
As to ICONTACTS, it's fast and simple application ontop of the original contacts software inside the WM6, now you can also have some choice for the theme, and at least it's much fast than POCKETCM and you can also have the "copy" and "paste" feature. So now I just transfer from POCETCM into ICONTACTS.

Can I ask why this is in the "Development and Hacking forum"? Seems to be related to neither...
Anyway... I prefer iContact as it is much more light weight, but it's down to personal preference.
With WM5 PocketCM is the best IMO. You finger-scroll contacts with fotos, favs, categorized, sms, and by phone number. The "new contact" page is fine (and still finger friendly), the sms are threaded and when you receive an sms it pops up PCM.
... TRY BOTH ! And make your own opinion
They are free, so you won't loose bucks trying them for a long time... And you will be able to choose witch one you want to support...

Yes me too. PCM loads with unicode very slow. I Like iContact
POCKET CM! for me
I don't need threaded SMS and icontact is much faster on my Device, so I'm using icontact, even it doesn't show the contactpictures...
If you have a fast device PCM is nice but otherwise take iContact because it takes less resources and just runs smoother.

HINT! Pocket Keyboard from the same dev has copy&paste integrated! jast tap&hold the return key und you get copy and paste functions. this work for any application.
as these later versions of pocketcm loads more graphics, it slows it down even more, but if you want the latest themes, you have to use the later versions.
I just recently discovered iContact and its speed makes it much more usable for me with my device (Sprint Touch).
What about neither? Use TouchFlo on your device, and you got scrolling on with your finger while you use the Random Access option on your regular contacts? You want a prettier one then get the one from the Diamond. It comes in different colours! I find that I hardly use the side-finger action as much. Because once you have the contact you normally just dial it. So it is about the same amount of steps.
Just sayin'....

I like my contacts on SIM card (old school ), so I'm using exactly the same option. Anyway, if both support SIM, my choice will be iContacts - faster is always better for me.
I prefer icontact:
1) Faster.
2) ABC grid is nice, selects a contact much easier than vertical scroll IMHO.
3) Auto close when dial a number or sms.
4) Can dial from call history.
5) Phone icon goes to real phone pad.
The advantage of pocketcm:
1) More details when view contact
2) Threaded sms (not too useful if on wm6.1)
3) Can use phone pad to search contacts
pocket cm
pocket cm is better in the sense that it had more options for customization like adding photos....but it does not let you edit contacts as easily. icontacts loads faster but does not have features like threaded texts. Its up to you decide for yourself. It depends on what you are looking for. Enjoy
icontact is much better for battery life and slower devices
pocketcm is fine for 400 mhz and above devices i think it looks better and more customizable at least to me

Ever since the new Sense 2.5 started surfacing, I have been watching all the cooks go for the new interface, but sadly (in my opinion), productivity-wise, it is a step back from Sense 2.1.
I missed the speed, the responsiveness and business-functionality of the "old" Sense 2.1.
For those of you in the same shoes as me, I present you my collection of "upgrades" for the Sense 2.1 interface, to combine the speed of S2.1 with the extra functions of S2.5
I will update this page as I find something new.
I do not take credit for the tweaks, I found them here-and-there, wherever possible I will give a link to the original thread.
Also, I use all the tips/tricks/hacks/programs on these pages, so they do work flawlessly.
Tools you will need:
1. I use Total Commander for copying files into the Windows directory. You can get if for free HERE. Alternative: use Resco Explorer.
Addon programs / cabs
Kimi has successfully extracted a number of Sense 2.5 extras to work with Sense 2.1. ORIGINAL THREAD
New, full page e-mail tab from new sense.
1. Install "Email_tab.cab" from end of post
2. Extract "Email_update.zip" from end of post into \Windows directory.
3. Soft reset
New camera with autofocus function (a lot faster for taking pictures)
1. Extract "Camera.zip" into \Windows directory
New calendar tab with new appointment editor, agenda and week view
Extract "Calendar_pack.zip" on your computer.
1. Install "1_Calendar_Tab"
2. Extract "2_Calendar_update.zip" into \Windows directory

Registry edits/hacks
The following hacks I found under the Leo thread, but work just fine and dandy with our Topazes and Sense 2.1 environment. All credits go to folks in that thread.
1. Enable Haptic Feedback in Opera for Link Clicking
Go to HKLM\Software\Opera\Defaults
Add new DWORD Value as Name: VibrationEnabled and DWORD Data (dec): 1
2. Enable Auto Data Disconnect for Auto Email Downloads and Other Downloads with a Cab File
When you have auto email downloads enabled, data is not disoconnected after mail retrieval and thus your battery is drained much faster. Modify the following reg edit to have data disconnect after 60 seconds. You can test this by tapping on the notfification bar while downloading emails and watch the data connection close after idle for 60 seconds.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings
CacheTime = 60
SuspendResume = should be blank
VPNCacheTime = 60
3. Boost Performance:
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS
Change - CacheSize to 4096
4. Change 'Reply All' Softkey to 'Reply' in Emails
When you are viewing a single email, the lower left soft key says Reply All. It would be better if it just said Reply. Well now it can. Soft reset after change.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings\ShowReplyAllEmailSK change 1 to 0.
5. Enable Reflow in Adobe Reader LE
Make the text flow even when zoomed in with the following reg tweak.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\AdobeReaderLE.25\ EnableReflow change 0 to 1.
6. Incease Picture Quality of Camera Photos
The following tweak will allow the camera to save images at a less compressed jpeg rate, meaning that the image will be sharper and more detailed.
HKLM\software\htc\camera\image\jpegquaity\superfine
Replace the 5Msize = 643628 value with 746028
7. Improve Camera Recording Quality of MPEG4-VGA Videos
The following tweak will increase the video quality from 2100avg bit-rate to 4500avg bit-rate.
Go to [HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\recparam\MP4VGA and replace the BitRate value with 4194304
8. Disable Beeps When Altering Volume
When you press the volume key you getting annoying beeps. This tweak allows to change the volume silently without the beeps.
HKCU\ControlPanel\Volume\Mute Change from 3 to 1.
9. Faster Keyboard Responsivness when Typing
HKCU\ControlPanel\Keybd
Change InitialDelay from 375 to 100

Thanks for these tips. The camera does appear to be faster. And also the email tab seems much quicker. I like the fact that you can read most of the email now, which is way more efficient than the previous tab, inwhich most of the mail was hidden in the big envelope.
However, the buttons for other mail adresses in the email tab (the small envelopes on the right) are horrible dissorted, as is the sms tab. I didn't found a way to solve this.
Also, it appears to be important that you install the agenda tweaks according to the numbering. Without noticing it, I started at the bottom and didn't see any agenda after installing everything. Therefore I reinstalled the 7 files in the right order. I do see the agenda now if i select the agenda tab. However, nothing happens when I select "day".

Hmmm. I do not see any of the distortion that you are talking about... Which ROM do you use?
As for the agenda, it works flawlessly for me. Again, which ROM and which language do you use?

Unfortunately none of the "upgrades" - email, camera, calendar works right for me either. Email has distorted graphics; camera has white letters on white background for the menu; calendar works the best except also white dates on white background so I can't read anything.
And the only way to go back to the original one was a hard reset. Fortunately I have backed up the phone yesterday so it wasn't a big deal, but it may not be so easy for others.
EDIT: just realize this is not for touch pro2. Would this be the reason? I'm using tmobile touch pro2 with stock wm6.5 rom.

I think it might be that you are on a stock ROM. It works just fine for me, on any 2.1 cooked ROM that I've used...
The language I use is Dutch. Installed the rom a while ago, so I cant really remember which one it was. I found two roms on my HD, so it must be one of these.

I'm sorry... For Dutch, put the attached files into your Windows directory...
The 17xxx is for the Caelndar tab and the 44xxx is for the email tab.
Do a soft reset afterwards! I hope this solves your problem!

Thank you for your help. Unfortunatly it didn't work. The only change I noticed was that now the "day" button in the calender tab is replaced by "IDS_Calend...". But I still can't select the calender day view and the envelops on the email tab still look horrible.
